  • Osupa dazzles all

King Saheed Osupa, the fuji crooner was at his best last Monday at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ife, when he mounted the stage to perform his act.  The venue was the Amphi-theatre of the campus.  And the show was past of the just-concluded OAU Ife Festival of food and identity.  As soon as Osupa hit the stage in his characteristic crowd-pulling stage antics, the large crowd made up of mainly the dtudents erupted with loud cheers and thremderous and hilarious screaming and applause.

As was expected, Osupa responded with equal enthusiasm as he pelted the arena with songs that appealed to the audience.  He was at his best, singing, jumping, dancing and appealing for calm.  As his voice rose well into the knight, the crowd became more electrified.  Osupa was meant to justify the theme of the festival based on food and identity.  He did not want to disappoint with his music,.

His songs dwelt on identity; on the reason why people should embrace what is their own.  As the evening wore on, with beautiful glows in the horizon, some of the students felt on top of the world.  “It is great; oh too wonderful to be true”, Sumbo, a 200 level student told The Nation.  “We love Osupa’s act”, she said further, giggling and sliding away.

As for Charles, another student, “All thanks must got to our dear VC Professor Ogunbodede.  His love for Arts is great.  See how the whole campus is on fire with different cultural and colourful displays.  We are excited; yes we are”.  It was their greatest opportunity to see Osupa, one of their most favourite musical stars face-to-face.  Yekini, a student in the faculty of Education said “OAU is a school where we cherish our culture.  And if you have a VC who is in love with culture, it then makes life more interesting.  You can see the crowd of students here in the Amphi-theatre in jolly good moods.  Oh, it is lovely”, he almost screamed.

  • Ojudu vows to recover assets “illegally” acquired by Fayose

Ojudu vows to recover assets “illegally” acquired by Fayose

Says he is on a mission to rebuild Ekiti

There was a massive lock down in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Friday as the Special Adviser to the President, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, formally declared interest to run for the governorship seat.

Ojudu, who hopes to run on the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), vowed to defeat Governor Ayo Fayose and his preferred candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, if he wins the ticket of the party.

The journalist-turned politician declared that the governor should prepare for hard times outside power as he (Fayose) would be made to face justice for alleged constitutional breaches and corruption.

Ojudu vowed that the APC administration would recover all assets, including choice houses, allegedly acquired by Fayose with Ekiti funds since his return to power in 2014.

The presidential aide held a three-in-one event which started with the inauguration of his campaign office along Textile Road before holding a massive rally at Okeyinmi Roundabout.

Popular Fuji musician, Saheed Osupa, was on band stand at the rally which where Ojudu addressed a massive crowd before the campaign train moved to the APC secretariat located in Ajilosun area of the city.

The governorship hopeful, who was accompanied by his wife, Tola, officials of his campaign organization, friends, associates and other admirers.

They were received by party executive led the state Deputy Chairman, Mrs. Kemisola Olaleye, where a big razzmatazz was on display. There was a huge traffic snarl on Ado-Ikere Highway throughout the period of the ceremony.

Mrs. Olaleye promised that the party would conduct a transparent, credible, free and fair primary election among all its aspirants. She said the party is poised to regain power at the July 14 poll to give Ekiti people good governance and better standards of living.

Speaking at the party secretariat, Ojudu urged APC leaders and members to unite and chase Fayose and his proxy out of power and save Ekiti State from total collapse.

He explained that he was prepared for a big fight ahead to rescue the state from Fayose’s grip urging all party leaders and members unite and work APC victory at the poll.

Ojudu emphasized that he has concrete evidence to proof that Fayose has allegedly been using funds belonging to Ekiti State to acquire property including not less than twenty houses and parcels of land in
choice areas of the state capital.

He said: “I have counted not less than twenty houses illegally acquired with money belonging to Ekiti State by Fayose in many parts of Ado-Ekiti alone.

“We are going to recover all these buildings when we get to power. Properties including the land acquired at Ojumose, the land near Mr. Biggs where he has been building a hall and a house near the Ado-Ekiti High Court.

“I have the pictures of those houses, I know the contractor and we are going to retrieve all these assets illegally and unlawfully acquired with our funds.

“All of us must rise to fight for the recovery of our state and I can’t wait for the day I will lead the party to victory. With your support, we can restore our state to the path of prosperity.”

According to him, everything humanly possible would be done to prevent Fayose from installing his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, which he said would spell doom for Ekiti.

He added: “But our party needs to tread cautiously to be able to defeat this cunning man. We must be able to hold secret because he had succeeded in infiltrating our ranks. He has planted people in our ranks to leak vital information to him, so we must be cautious.

“I know that the challenges of the recent years have galvanized our people to be resolute to fight the battle ahead. The next election is a must-win for APC.

“Fayose is planning to rule the state by proxy by attempting to put his surrogate on the governorship seat. Let me assure you, we are going to foil such attempt.

“Let me say this, I have all it takes to liberate Ekiti from the slavery they were put into by Fayose. I had once defeated him in a senatorial contest and I will do same again if given the opportunity.”

  • SAHEED OSUPA, MONARCH CLASH OVER CHIEFTAINCY TITLE

A traditional ruler in Omole, Ikeja, Lagos has asked fuji music star Saheed Osupa to renounce the title adopted on the CD sleeve of his album, Agba Akin Omole.

In a letter to Saheed Osupa dated July 16, 2016, Alhaji Taiwo Nasiru Bakare, the Baale of Omole, said Omole is under his jurisdiction in Lagos State and the previous holder of the title was Late Olugbenga Adefolarin, an editor with the defunct TNT Newspaper who was given the title in 1999 while the present holder, World Cruiser Heavy Weight Champion Bash Ali (OON), was given the title in 2012.

According to Alhaji Bakare, the title, Agba Akin Omole, displayed on the Osupa’s album sleeve is misleading and that Osupa should apologise in three national newspapers or risk being sued.

“How is it now possible to claim chieftaincy title of a town in Lagos state under Ikeja Local Government to someone else,” Alhaji Bakare said in the letter.

“Your action embarrass the people of Omole Community indigene and Lagos State as a whole, I was installed as Baale of Omoleland. Alh Taiwo Nasiru Bakare since 2nd October 1999 without any confrontation or molestation, I hereby request for letter of apology for your action within 7 days to be forwarded to Omole community through our Secretary, and to disclaim such in three national newspaper to avoid legal actions.”

Alhaji Bakare also said he should correct the title in his CDs and posters.

However, reacting to the development, Adeola Okunola, Osupa elder’s brother, said the title was given to Saheed Osupa by the Olojudu of Ojudu. Though he admitted the error, he was unapologetic to the Baale’s stance of Osupa apologising, heaping any blame on the marketer.

“To set the record straight, Osupa does not ‎owe the community any apology,” he said, in an email statement.

“He has never claimed to be the Agbaakin of Omole but that of Ojodu. And he will not claim so, unless he is installed as such. So, why the fuss?

“The marketer, in a bid to make sales or mistakenly, may have used the title. We all know how marketers do their work. The Kabiesi in the disc, is that of Ojodu and not Omole. He sang it in his music‎. They should go and watch the disc, over and over.”

Dismissing the threat of court action by Alhaji Bakare, Okunola urged those complaining to listen to album and said that Osupa will not stoop low to achieve fame.

“If they are playing, they should stop the joke,” he said.

“While we are not saying that some people might have motivated them to issue such in order to malign the soaring popularity of our principal, we urge the community leaders and stakeholders to listen to the said album again.

“As a cultured person who was brought up by disciplined parents, our principal would have loved to react more than this because we wonder why someone would open his mouth and say that “Your action is embarrassing to the people of Omole”. For us, our principal does not owe anybody the smallest of apologies; they should contact sound legal minds to explain things for them.

“Despite the fact that Osupa is educationally sophisticated, he knows what is wrong from what is right and he is somebody who works harder‎ to earn the fame he enjoys today and not one of those who will stoop so low to achieve fame, at any cost.”

Lekan Yusuf, a cameraman, whose outfit is Hayzed Pictures, also said there shouldn’t be any controversy. “It is just the title of the album,” he said.

There has been a raging supremacy battle between Saheed Osupa and Wasiu Alabi Pasuma with fans of both artistes at each other’s necks.

  • I USED TO HAVE STAGE-FRIGHT –SAHEED OSUPA

Fuji musician Saheed Okunola is more popularly known as Saheed Osupa. In this interview with SIKIRU AKINOLA, Osupa talks about his early years, how he got his love for using proverbs in his songs, his musical influences and bares his mind on other issues surrounding his music, and person….Excerpt

SOME people are quick to read meaning into whatever you say; that they consider some of your songs abusive or attacking personality. Do you always have somebody in mind before singing?

No! I even sing sometimes to correct myself. Let me tell you something: we have different kind of people everywhere. On this street for example, there must be definitely someone with a bad character. Even in an household, there must be one; his character may be open to some people and some people may not be aware, a hidden kind of behaviour. Mischievous people always hide their behaviours while there are also some people who are lousy with their bad behaviour. In every household, my songs will definitely affect, at least, a person. So, that is how it affects people generally.

    It seems you enjoy controversy?

(Cuts in) Do you think so or people say it? Is it the view of you journalists? No, it cannot be true.

‎There is this widely-held opinion by music lovers that Osupa and Pasuma are into a kind of rivalry. What is your take on that?

Hmmm! Rivalry? No, It is not something personal. To me, I believe it is normal in business to be involved in such. If you are involved in the same business and you are selling to the same market, there is bound to be competition. So, it is competition, not rivalry.

How do you feel whenever you see or hear people peddling rumours about your person?

As a public person, that is not a big deal. You are bound to face things like that. People will talk about you no matter how. People see you every day. They are watching the way you behave and by implication, you are an object of scrutiny.

They monitor everything you do. So, there is bound to be rumours about you; they will say what they see about you. Some will add to it while some will just frame something that did not even happen. So, I am not always moved. It is normal unless you are not a known person. That is when they will stop peddling lies about you. But if you are still existing; still doing new things every day, they will keep talking about you. And for that sort of controversy which you mentioned: what I like is challenge, I don’t like controversy. I don’t fight people for no just cause. For example, if you are trying to stop me from achieving what is normal for be to achieve, I believe there is going to be a rancour or a misunderstanding between me and the person. That is where controversy comes up.

I am not the type that just cooks up something that doesn’t have any meaning and take offence; I don’t do that. It is only when somebody or a group of people are trying to prevent me from achieving a target goal or from progressing, that is when I enjoy controversy because I cannot watch and allow you to stop me from getting what I know would improve my life positively. I am not somebody who would want to achieve anything at the detriment of others; because I want to achieve this, I should destroy that person’s image. I don’t that.

    Are you hot-tempered?

I can say I have changed but when I was choleric, it was due to childish behaviour which was normal in most young adults. Saheed Osupa is grown up now. Saheed Osupa is a very calm person now. The juvenile stuff is gone. Like my son would tell me: “Daddy, you are old now”.

You were brought up in Lagos but your songs are always laced with philosophical sayings which only somebody who grew up from the village could have understood. What is the driving force?

Really I am a Lagos person but I am from Ibadan. I lived with my grandmother and she always talked in proverbs. If she says something and you tell her you don’t understand, she would tell you: “understand if you want to understand. I have said my own.” So, from there, we learned how to understand her. Later whenever she spoke, we started understanding her. That was where I started building the knowledge.

As a popular fuji musician, do you get advances from the female folks?

It is normal for such thing to happen because women like famous people. Some like you for what you are doing, some because you are famous regardless of what you are doing. You know some people are doing bad things and they are famous for it and ladies still like them, though they don’t like what they are doing. So that is how it is. Some people like my music more than me while some like my personality more than my music.

Some people are of the view that it is not easy for musicians to face the crowd without taking hard substances like marijuana and all sorts. What is your take on that?

We are not created equally. Like me for example, everything about me is natural. Though I used to be stage-frightened when I started but I later overcame it. I don’t take anything. Nothing makes me perform better. I don’t even need anything to influence me.

How do you spend your night life?

Well, not always. I am resting or thinking; trying to bring up new things but sometimes, I go to club. All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.

How was your growing up days like?

It was rough and tough. Things began to dwindle financially for my parents who were formerly rich as I was growing up. And along the time, they got broke one way or the other. Then I was not staying with my father because my parents were separated when I was young. So, I lived with my mother at that period. She did all kinds of things, just to make sure I become somebody in life. She sold almost everything she had just to fend for us.

    Is Osupa educated?

To the glory of God, I have a National Diploma in Business Administration from The Polytechnic, Ibadan. Also, when I got to the United States, I attended a computer school where I studied networking operations and a little bit about computer programmes.

What can you say about your days at the polytechnic?

I don’t have much to say about it. The road was rough because I expected my father to assist me but…I don’t want to make further comment. I did everything myself with my brother, Lateef.

When exactly did you start singing?

I started singing precisely in 1983 and started acting the same year.

What was your parents’ reaction to that?

I have been doing it for a year before they got to know. When I watched my mother struggling, trying to make ends meet; days when things were worse, I decided to look for alternatives. When I saw my friends hustling after their parents have sold everything; knowing that what their parents were bringing home was not enough for them,  that was when I also decided to join them. Along the line, that was how I got into acting and music.

Who is your greatest motivation in music?

Ah! It is no other person than the late music legend, Sikiru Ayinde Barirster. If you have listened to Aka, Yusuf Olatunji and others whose styles are interwoven, you will see Aka singing part of what Olatunji has sang. You will see Olatunji also singing a part of Aka’s music. But Barrister came up with new things because Aka and Olatunji were singing the same kind of music but with a different voice.

Although Barrister was singing a little bit of Aka and Olatunji’s lyrics in order to carry the fans of the duo along but he too created his own. So, that was what really impressed me about Barrister. So, I was thinking of doing the same kind of thing in a better way. That was what I had in mind. And I am grateful to God that I have done it better than I thought.

What has the death of the late fuji icon taught you?

It has taught me a lot. Some of the lessons are personal to me. I cannot disclose them. It has taught me to be very hard-working; that if you are hard-working, your name would be etched in gold when you die. It was after Barrister died that many people began to appreciate him. Such would teach someone that is still alive to work harder.‎

    Is Osupa a millionaire?

I cannot say I have achieved all what I dreamt but I thank God because I never thought of what I have become. I never even thought of these achievements. I dabbled into it just to make ends meet. I never thought I would become famous but I have had this sign that I would become famous when I was young because everybody knows me wherever I stay.

When I left my parents’ place to live in another environment, within a month, all the people on that street had known me; not even about controversy. That was when I started sensing this kind of fortune. I would only thank God for what he has done in my life so far. I did not even think of becoming half of what I have become today.

Where has this fuji music taken you to?

Though I have met the movers and shakers of this country but what I have in mind to achieve which I believe God will help me to achieve is that I want fuji to become a universal music. Barrister has done his part but not much. I want people that do not hear what I am saying and do not understand the lyrics to dance to my fuji music. I am thinking of a way to do it. I will surely achieve it one day.

What would you like to be remembered for?

That is creativity because I believe in doing new things. For example, when I am old and gone, I want people to listen to my songs and others and say that if it were to be Osupa, it would have been well-sang.

You were very fond of your mother till she died. Were you able to repay all what she did for you?

I built this house for her but she warned me against organising the house warming ceremony in her name. I told her the importance but she resisted it, saying she wanted me to open it in my name.

What is your new 2 in 1 album, ‘Transformation and Transparency’ all about?

Transparency talks about me because people believe I am a hard person; that he loves making trouble. When you say the truth, it is bitter to most people but there is no better way to say the truth than in its true colour.

Though they may not be ready to listen to it, say it the way it is. Many people believe in lies. That was why I did that track. I sang about two friends; one a transparent person who used to say the truth and the other one is a blatant liar; he lies a lot. He would tell you something that is glaringly white is black and all sorts. I narrated their lives from when they began till they grew up; what the one who says the truth and the liar ended up with.

That is ‘Transparency.’ And the other one, ‘Transformation’ is about President Muhammadu Buhari. I sang about Nigerians; about our attitude when a new leader comes in and we start rejoicing and after few months, we start complaining about him again. I urged people to be patient and I made some remarks about corruption; that if you are a political office holder, we elected you serve the country and not yourself or your pocket.

  • Stakeholders wade into Osupa – MAAN face-off

Stakeholders wade into Osupa – MAAN face-off

Stakeholders in the music industry have called on the president of Music Advertisers Association of Nigeria (MAAN), Alhaji Waheed Oyediran, aka Mosebolatan, and Fuji artiste, Saheed Osupa, to sheathe their swords and embrace peace. This appeal was jointly made during a recent stakeholders’ meeting at the Abalti Barracks, Lagos. Among the notable individuals and organisation that called on the two warring personalities are veteran music producer and marketer, Alhaji Waheed Olumo of Olumo Records, Alhaji Mo-Saheed of MoSaheed Records, Fuji Musician Association of Nigeria (FUMAN), Islamic Musician Association of Nigeria, (ISMAN) and Musical instrument rentals Association, among others. During the meeting, which was summoned by the Music Label Owners Association of Nigeria, MULOAN, Alhaji Olumo and Mo-Saheed called on the Mosebolatan-led MAAN to lift the ban placed on Osupa and that both parties should embrace peace. The MULOAN, led by Elder Joel Ajayi, supported by the Public Relations Officer, Tunde Oselu of Tunderbolt Visions and the Assistant Secretary, Rotimi Babatunde, reiterated the association’s stand on the issuance of logo. Ajayi said the suspension had nothing to do with the feud between MAAN and Osupa. According to him, it became necessary to check the abuse and pave way for a more effective and transparent process of issuing logos. “Logo is not a condition for replicating companies to produce their jobs. We also enjoin all artistes, promoters, marketers, distributors and retailers to release and sell their musical CDs without logo until further notice,” Ajayi said.
