Merino, Saka score as Arsenal beat Brentford

Mikel Merino and Bukayo Saka scored as Arsenal beat Brentford to restore their five point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Manager Mikel Arteta made three changes to the side that drew with Chelsea on Sunday with Ben White, Noni Madueke and captain Martin Odegaard coming in.

And it was White and Madueke who combined in the build-up on 11 minutes with right-back White crossing for Arsenal’s make-shift front man Merino to head home.

Merino has had to play regularly as Arsenal’s frontman because of injuries to Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Viktor Gyokeres and his goal was his 13th  in 2025, the most of any Arsenal player during the year.

Bukayo Saka added the second in stoppage time after being played through on goal by Merino from midfield, and despite the best efforts of Caoimhin Kelleher, the ball bounced over the line.

Brentford were pinned back for large parts of the game but went close to equalising in the first half when Kevin Schade’s header from a corner was pushed onto the crossbar by David Raya.

The only worry for Arteta was that Cristhian Mosquera and Declan Rice both had to be taken off with knocks.

The victory extends Arsenal’s unbeaten run to 18 games across all competitions and was also their eighth successive win at home.

  • Self burden of women in  Saka’s paintings

Self burden of women in  Saka’s paintings

When it comes to handling gender rights, artist, Oluwafunke Saka’s works and themes fall between the lines of intellectual articulation and emotional entitlement.

Her paintings highlight social, spiritual and other challenges, as some of the works also single out women as victims. Ironically, one of such works presents women as the central cause of their dilemma.

In her investigation into female gender dilemma, Saka stuns viewers of her work with a piece that combines surreal and suspense. The piece titled What the Hands Cannot Hold appears like a contradiction, which emphasizes the limbs in text, but removes them in imagery. If there are no hands in the first place, as she deocta in the figure, then there should be nothing to hold, that’s the immediate thoughts crossing a viewer’s mind a out the title.

However, the artist and storyteller in Saka pulls a surprise in what seems like the narrative of a woman without hands that captures females as members of the society that hides their agony. Strangely, how would any woman hides their pain when in fact she needs help?

Culturally, the woman is expected to shoulder nearly all domestic activities, and a resistance, according to the artist’s work, could be seen as rebellion. So, she has to pretend that all is well despite going through so much pains to satisfy everyone.

More explanations required to satisfy the curiosity of the figure not having hands, more so that she needs them to satisfy the society. Surprisingly, the limbless figure symbolically proves that women’s hands are always overwhelmed, especially with domestic activities. And sometimes when she is a career person, either in private business or corporate practice, the burden of combined family and profession become overwhelming.

For a woman to be so critical of her gender as Saka does with the painting What the Hands Cannot Hold suggests a twist to the established narrative of campaign on gender imbalance. Perhaps, the artist should have added generational shift perspective to the gender imbalance issue. As much as the older generation of women have been over submissive to society’s demands, the emerging young women are not exactly the same.

When women get sandwiched between self-satisfaction and satisfying the larger society, perhaps, they need to have one of Oluwafunke’s art pieces on their walls. The piece she calls Best of Both Worlds offers physical and spiritual solutions to challenges.

A mixed media of acrylic, paper and yarn on canvas, Best of Both Worlds appears like art from the desk of a kid artist, but presents deep intellectual contents. Basically, it gives insight into what it takes to live between worlds, that usually comes with the opposite sides of every choice.

The work explains two sides of every story, which could be in the physical and the spiritual; the harmony of differences, or inherited or the self-made. The artist has a personal experience to share about duality of the world: “It draws on my own journey of navigating cultural, emotional, and spiritual spaces that often feel intertwined, yet ultimately shape a fuller sense of self.”

The piece, which comes in oval shape with what looks like eyes, perhaps representing spiritual and physical sight, explores the quiet harmony that can exist within duality. Though not gender based, Best of Both World could serve as a twin piece, philosophically to What the Hands Cannot Hold. The themes have something in common about difficulty in choice, avoidable or forced to accept.

As a conceptual artist, based in the UK, Oluwafunke Saka brings multidisciplinary perspective into painting, mixed media, and installation. Her bio says she explores the intersections of mental health, spirituality, identity, and transformation often merging abstraction and figuration into a symbolic language that speaks to both personal and collective experience.

Born in Nigeria, Saka’s career is an interesting mix of art and science. She holds a bachelors degree in Pharmacy and a masters in Fine Art. Her bio explains that the dual background reflects a lifelong commitment to healing: as medicine restores the body, she sees art as medicine for the heart and soul. For her, creating is both a personal act of therapy and a gift to the viewer. A way to open space for introspection, emotional connection, and change.

Saka, Odegaard face late fitness tests for Man City showdown

Captain Martin Odegaard and winger Bukayo Saka ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash with Manchester City, with both players facing late fitness tests,  according to manager Mikel Arteta.

Saka has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury last month, while Odegaard has been battling a shoulder problem after coming off early in the last two home games.

Arsenal sit second behind Liverpool after four matches and can ill-afford to drop points against eighth-placed City.

“If there is a chance (they play on Sunday), it will be after tomorrow’s session, because they haven’t done anything yet, so we’ll have more information tomorrow,” Arteta told reporters ahead of the marquee game.

“Everything has been modified so far for them. There are still a few things to clear and tomorrow we’ll have more information on whether they are part of the squad or if they have a chance to be part of the squad.”

Centre back William Saliba, who departed early in the 1-0 loss at Liverpool, returned to the bench for Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win at Athletic Bilbao and also faces a late fitness test.

Arteta also confirmed Viktor Gyokeres and Mikel Merino are both fine after head injuries in the European clash.

A lack of squad depth has derailed Arsenal’s title challenge in recent seasons but after spending big in the close season that is no longer the case and Arteta praised the impact his substitutes made in their Champions League opener.

Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, on the bench after the signings of Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, made an instant impact as they came on and scored in Tuesday’s 2-0 Bilbao win.

“You look historically at the top team, the team that has won a lot, the impact that the finishers had has always been really, really high,” Arteta said.

“You need that quality nowadays to unlock games and to be consistent every three days is even harder. That’s what we need.

Saka set to miss up to four weeks through injury

Bukayo Saka is set to miss Arsenal’s game at Liverpool on Sunday as well as England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia next month.

The 23-year-old went off with a hamstring injury in Saturday’s home win against Leeds United and it is estimated the forward will be unavailable for up to four weeks.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is doubtful for the match at Anfield as a result of a shoulder injury suffered in the victory against Leeds.

Odegaard looked in pain as he was replaced in the first half of the 5-0 win and the former Real Madrid attacking midfielder is understood to have left Emirates Stadium with his shoulder in a sling.

The Norway playmaker has not yet been ruled out of the game against the Premier League champions and there is optimism at Arsenal that neither the 26-year-old or Saka will be long-term casualties.

There is particular relief regarding Saka, who missed three months of last season with a hamstring injury.

Arsenal have a much deeper pool of attacking talent this season though, having signed Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze this summer.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta also has Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman to mitigate the absences of Saka and Odegaard.

Arteta hopes Arsenal star Saka will be fit to face PSG

Mikel Arteta hopes Bukayo Saka will be fit for Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain after suffering an ankle injury in Sunday’s 4-0 win against Ipswich.

Saka was substituted 10 minutes into the second half at Ipswich and had an ice pack applied to his right ankle as he felt the after-effects of Leif Davis’ crude foul in the first haff.

Davis was shown a straight red card and VAR did not intervene with referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision after it was adjudged that the Ipswich defender had “endangered Saka’s safety”.

Saka, who played a starring role in Arsenal’s swaggering first half display, played on for a while after the foul but limped towards the tunnel at the conclusion of the game.

However, Arteta is confident the England international, who has only just returned from a near four-month injury lay-off following hamstring surgery, will be fit to face PSG in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium on April 29.

“I don’t think it is intentional but it was dangerous,” Arteta said of Davis’s foul.“I do worry with the numbers that we have right now, especially when the player has his back to goal, because that is the moment when the foot is planted, your weight is there, and you cannot really react.

“He cuts him from the back. The referee made a decision, and that it is clear. Bukayo was a bit sore, but it’s nothing serious, so it’s good.”

Just four days after they sealed their place in the Champions League semi-finals with a 5-1 aggregate victory over holders Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, Arsenal maintained the feel-good factor in Suffolk.

The Gunners, who have never won the Champions League, went ahead against Ipswich in the 14th  minute when Leandro Trossard converted Saka’s cross.

Gabriel Martinelli doubled their advantage in the 28th minute after Mikel Merino flicked on Saka’s cross.

Trossard completed his brace on 69 minutes with Saka’s replacement, Ethan Nwaneri, adding a fourth in the closing moments.

“We are really happy, really happy with the performance. The first 35 minutes is one of the best we have played this season,” Arteta said.

“We really dominated, with a very high intensity and understanding what we had to do to win.

“When they got the red card, the context of the game changed, and we were much more in control, scored another two goals, and were then able to make certain rotations. It was a very positive afternoon.”

Saka’s recovery schedule has gone according to plan and he is now back in full training. However, the Gunners are continuing to be cautious with his return and will make a final decision closer to Tuesday’s match.

Barring any unexpected delay the England attacker should be available to face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals in April.

Last week, BBC Sport revealed Arsenal were set to open formal contract talks with Saka, who is entering the final two years of his deal.

Saka faces ‘more than two months’ out after surgery – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says Bukayo Saka is likely to be out for “more than two months” after having surgery on his injured hamstring.

The winger, 23, went off in the first half of Arsenal’s 5-1 Premier League win at Crystal Palace on 21 December and left the stadium on crutches.

Saka is a key player for the Gunners and has scored nine goals and provided 13 assists in 24 games in all competitions this season.

Arsenal beat Ipswich 1-0 on Friday night in their first game since Saka’s injury and, speaking after the win that took them up to second place, Arteta confirmed the timeline for the England international’s recovery.

“He had a procedure,” said the Gunners boss. “Everything went well, but unfortunately he will be out for many, many weeks.

“I said many weeks, so I think it will be more than two months. I don’t know exactly how much longer.

“It will depend on how the scar tissue starts to heal, the first week or so, the mobility of that. Let’s see, it’s very difficult to say.”

Arsenal, though, have been handed a welcome fitness boost over Raheem Sterling, with the forward expected to return quicker than expected.

Before the match with Ipswich, Arteta had said the 30-year-old Chelsea loanee would be out for “weeks” with a knee injury.

However, the problem is not as bad as first feared and Sterling could be available for selection again soon.

“Yes, we have to see this week how he evolves,” added Arteta. “We probably expected the knee injury to take longer than it has evolved in the last few days. Hopefully that’s good news because we need him.”

EPL: Saka stars as Arsenal beat Forest to end winless run

Arsenal got their title challenge back on track by beating Nottingham Forest to secure a first win in five Premier League matches.

The Gunners’ form has dipped in recent weeks amid a tough fixture schedule and a number of injuries, which meant Mikel Arteta’s side were nine points behind leaders Liverpool before kick-off on Saturday.

Arsenal dominated from the outset at Emirates Stadium and Bukayo Saka gave them the lead after 15 minutes, when he exchanged passes with Martin Odegaard before beating two defenders and slamming a strike into the top corner.

Thomas Partey, who came on as a half-time substitute, doubled the hosts’ lead when he curled in from 20 yards, before youngster Ethan Nwaneri added a third late on to secure the win.

Forest have been the surprise package of the season so far and came into this match with the same number of points (19) as the Gunners. However, they struggled to get into the game and their best chances were tame headers from Ryan Yates and Nicolas Dominguez.

Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber thought he had put the hosts in front when he tapped in from close range before Saka’s opener, but Mikel Merino was offside in the build-up.

This match was Arteta’s 250th in charge of Arsenal in all competitions – and he will hope victory sparks a run of form that will help his side close the gap on their rivals at the top.
