CAF Champions League: Wolves beg Salami to play against Sporting Praia

Gbolahan Salami has told supersport.com that Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club Warri Wolves do not hold ownership of his playing rights.

The striker reacted angrily to claims by the Warri club that he is still in contract with them, urging the NPFL side to show proof of their declaration.

However, he claimed that the officials of the club have contacted him to feature for them in the CAF Champions League game against Sao Tome and Principe’s Sporting Praia Cruz on the weekend of February 12-14.

“Most of the players who left the club were not paid the match bonuses that were recently paid. Is that fair? So if they didn’t pay me match bonuses, how come they say I am still their player when I played on loan with them last season? Even the loan fee they have not paid up.

“Meanwhile they have been pleading with me to play for them in the Champions League, but I have told them that if they want me to play for them then they must pay the money they owe me. I have told them to talk to my manager,” Salami told supersport.com.

Nigeria international Gbolahan Salami has joined Finnish club Kuopio Palloseura (KuPS) to team up with his Warri Wolves teammate, Azubuike Egwuekwe.

The club announced on their website that the ex-Shooting Stars forward has signed a year’s deal with an option of another year.

The 24-year-old was the top scorer in Nigeria league in the 2014/2015 season with 17 goals. He opted to stay out of CHAN 2016 so as to finalise his move to Europe.

Last year January, Salami moved to Serbian club  Red Star Belgrade, but returned to Nigeria to join Warri Wolves after the club could not pay his wages.

Oliseh gives ‘runaway’ Salami slim hope of return

The road back for ‘Runaway’ Gbolahan Salami to the Super Eagles in the earliest is likely but it certainly will be steep as Sunday Oliseh lays down the marker.

24-year-old Salami jumped ship after the Christmas break in 2015 refusing to report back with the team during the first phase of camping for the African Nations Championship.

Reports suggest the Warri Wolves striker is on the verge of securing a foreign deal but he has refused to communicate with the national team handlers.

Speaking of the player’s chances of getting future invitation to the national team, Oliseh said: “Of course he (Gbolahan Salami) like any other player will be considered as long as they give top performances – at their clubs.”

The former Shooting Stars hit-man has suffered several failed attempts to pen deals abroad and may shut himself out of the current team with rumors of a discord with the gaffer.

IBITOYE ASSURES: CHAN Eagles won’t miss Salami

Super Eagles spokesman, Toyin Ibitoye has said the side have moved on with the absence of captain and Warri Wolves striker, Gbolahan Salami.

The former 3SC marksman is the only player missing in the Super Eagles CHAN team preparing for the forthcoming biannual football showpiece next month in Kigali, Rwanda.

Salami is said to be keenly interested in securing foreign club than participating in the championship designed for African players in their domestic leagues.

Ibitoye said the likely absence of the strongly built goal poacher will prove to be a rare visa for his replacements to shine at the upcoming CHAN.

“It appears Gbolahan Salami does not want to go to CHAN in Kigali, Rwanda rather interested in European deal we can only wish him good luck in his quest for greener pasture elsewhere.

“However, Eagles have moved on in their preparations for the upcoming CHAN and his absence will be an opportunity for other players to step up, excel and become known.

“Salami became known on a day so it’s up to other players in camp to grab the rare chance to prove themselves. The players response to training has been excellent we just hope and pray they will be able to reproduce the performance on match day.

“The assistant coaches have been doing a good job in the absence of head coach, Sunday Oliseh who is constantly in touch with the team and well as dishing out instructions regularly,” said Ibitoye to supersport.com.

Ibitoye discloses that Sharks’ defender, Chima Akas is recovering rapidly from the slight knock he picked in training.

“Akas reported to camp on Sunday due to poor weather on Saturday contrary to impression in the public that he is still missing. Akas picked a slight knock but he is doing very well at the moment so he remains a key member of the Eagles CHAN team,” said Ibitoye.

The bronze winners are expected to depart the nation’s shore on Saturday to Pretoria, South Africa where they are billed to engage Ivory Coast, Angola, among others in build-up matches.

Eagles will open their CHAN title account on January 18 against the Nigerien opposite at the Stade Regional Nyamirambo, Kigali before taking on other Group C opponents, Tunisia and Guinea on January 22 and 26 respectively.

Salami seals overseas move next week

Nigeria league hotshot Gbolahan Salami has said he hopes to tie up a move overseas next week and so opted out of the CHAN Eagles training camp in Abuja.

A source informed: “Salami is still very much in Nigeria but he believes that by next week he would most likely seal a transfer abroad.”

The Warri Wolves striker, who scored 17 goals this past season, has stayed away from the CHAN training squad, who are set to jet out of the country on Saturday.

Some years ago, Salami posted a failed move to South African club Mamelodi Sundowns and early this year, a move to Serbia collapsed after Red Star Belgrade could not pay the Nigeria striker.

    • Joins team for afternoon training

Warri Wolves striker, Gbolanhan Salami joined his Super Eagles teammates yesterday, two days after camp opened for the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) preparations holding next month in Rwanda.

He was received by assistant coach, Salisu Yusuf, who is standing in for head coach, Sunday Oliseh, who is in Belgium recuperating from illness.

The team is camped at the Bolton White Apartments in Abuja

After missing Wednesday’s morning training, Salami was able to take part in the afternoon session, with his presence swelling the number of players in camp to 23.

Although no specific reason was given for his absence, a camp source however linked it to the arrival of his son who was born a fortnight ago.

“That is what l think must have been the reason for his late arrival, if not he should have reported to camp on Monday with the other players. But the good thing is that he has arrived and is ready to give his best,” said our source.

With Salami’s arrival, the battle for shirts will be intensified, just as coaches hope that no player would get injured in training.

Besides being the team’s captain, Salami is considered a vital part of the team after finishing the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season with 17 goals to be the highest goal scorer.

Other players still expected are Kalu Orji of Rangers FC, Taraba’s Usman Muhammed and Yaro Bature of Nasarawa United, who were part of the U-23 National Team that won the gold at the U-23 Africa Championship in Senegal.

Salami happy over arrival of baby boy

Super Eagles and Warri Wolves striker, Gbolahan Fuad Salami and his wife, Lolade welcomed their first child, a boy, early Sunday morning.

Lolade gave birth to the baby around 4 am at a hospital in Surulere, Lagos.

The couple got married in  2014.

An elated Salami in a chat with SportingLife expressed joy over the arrival of the baby, describing it as a sign of good things to come for his family.

He said the arrival  will open a way for his long dream move to Europe.

The naming ceremony, according to Salami, will hold next week Sunday.

Salami emerged the Glo Premier League’s highest goal scorer with 17 goals at the end of the season.

“It is good news to our family and I am happy. I thank God the baby and mother are doing fine. I thank God for everything he has done for me this year. I won the league’s highest goal scorers award and today I am welcoming my first son. I give all thanks to God. I hope this will open a way for my move to Europe which has been my dream,” Salami said to SportingLife.

  • Buhari should ask EFCC, ICPC to investigate corrupt judges, says Salami

Buhari should ask EFCC, ICPC to investigate corrupt judges, says Salami

•Advises against use of quota system to appoint judges,
recommends Kenyan model •Wants five-year tenure for CJs

A former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, wants   President Muhammadu Buhari to ask the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other anti-graft agencies to investigate corrupt judges.

The presidency, according to him, should also copy the Kenyan model to rid the nation’s judiciary of corruption, while kicking against quota system in appointing judges.

Salami, speaking at the 8th Annual Forum of the laureates of the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) and the Award in Abuja, said Chief Judges of both the State and Federal High Courts should have a prescribed tenure of not more than five years

“In the circumstance, corruption being criminal in nature, a solution that can be proffered is that judicial officers who are suspected of committing crime should be referred to the State Security Services, EFCC, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) or the Nigeria Police for investigation and possible prosecution,” he said.

“For those of them who are found culpable or liable, the President may consider giving them soft landing by allowing them to resign and proceed on compulsory retirement or permit the law to take its due course.

“The present situation where there are serious allegations of corruption against a judicial officer in several petitions and the National Judicial Council let him off the hook on investigation of only one of the several petitions and retires him seemingly suggests that the interest of justice has not been served.

“The outstanding petition(s) should also be sent to the police for necessary action. A recently compulsorily retired judicial officer trivialized the decision of the National Judicial Council by saying that he was not retired on the allegation that he received one hundred million naira from the executive governor of Rivers State to nullify the election of local government chairmen and it was not in relation to Odi but it was in relation to Shell case; whatever that may mean.

“The outstanding petitions ought to have been investigated and pronounced upon to determine whether he merits retirement or dismissal. Merely sending the officer on retirement without an order for refund of the booty is grossly inadequate. Be that as it may, these are criminal cases and should not terminate with NJC decision. Such judicial officers should be referred to the relevant security agencies for investigation and determination of their criminal responsibility.”

Salami asked the presidency to send a team to understudy the Kenyan model of tackling corruption in the judiciary.

His words: “In the alternative, government might wish to consider taking steps similar to what I understand Kenya took in combating such vexed issues. When the country decided to rid its judicial system of corruption, she suspended all her judicial officers and subjected them to an enquiry.

“The tests and criteria adopted, I learnt, in addition to the usual allegation of corruption to which the judge may answer with the typical contention of lack of evidence was that the judgment(s) or order(s) of the judge or justice or khadi, as the case may be, were subjected to scrutiny and if found correctly determined, the officer is allowed to return to the Bench.

“But if the judgment(s) or order(s) was found wanting or flew in the face of the law or facts or both, the judge was deemed corrupt or incompetent; on either view, he was found unsuitable for the position and was consequently shown the way out of the country’s judicial system.

“Thus the contention that corruption had not been proved in the sense that there was no evidence or there was no corroboration would no longer be tenable. Clearly, this approach does not provide room or opportunity for crass technicality.

“This suggestion may require the Commander-in-Chief sending a team to Kenya to study the relevant institution in that country and the role to be played by our National Assembly. The exploratory team may also obtain the relevant legislation Kenya enacted to put the body in place. In doing this, respectable men of integrity must be selected.”

The former President of the Court of Appeal recommended a five-year tenure for Chief Judges of both the State and Federal High Courts.

He said: “the Chief Judges of both the State and Federal High Courts should have a prescribed tenure of not more than five years during which they are considered for appointment to the Court of Appeal or proceed on voluntary retirement. A long tenure sometimes spanning over ten years is most unhealthy.

“An aspiring candidate for the offices of Chief Justice of Nigeria, President of Court of Appeal, Chief Judges, federal or state or any head of court whose age is less than five years from the age of retirement should not be appointable. Frequent change of heads of courts results in instability.

Salami also said eradication of corruption in the judiciary should start with the appointment of judges.

He said: “The fight against corruption in the judiciary should commence from the appointment of judges or justices to the various courts across the country. The sifting should start with the quality of university degree and the law school grade.

“In this age of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, which allows a student with five credits at two sittings to gain admission into university, prospective candidates for appointment to the bench without five credits at a sitting should not be considered.

“So also must aspiring judges with a university degree lower than a second class (lower division) not be considered; and all those who repeated their examinations at the Law School should not be deemed suitable for appointment to the Bench.

“In the United States of America, to qualify as a legal assistant to a justice, one must have obtained a first class in his law degree. It should equally be further noted that in that country, law is pursued as a second and not a first degree.”

He also urged the nation to do away with the use of quota system in the appointment of judges at all level, including the Supreme Court.

He said: “The controversial question of the policy of federal character euphemistically referred to as quota system should be carefully re-examined in its application to the judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court and to a lesser extent the Court of Appeal.

” There was a time when the Nigerian judiciary was dominated by expatriates and later by the then Western Nigeria, but, with rapid progress in legal education various parts of the country took up the challenge and have come to take their pride of place in the system.

“The present situation whereby the seats in the Supreme Court are shared among the geographical zones in a water tight arrangement is unhealthy.”

Salami leads Home Eagles in tricky Burkina Faso tie

HOME Eagles captain Gbolahan Salami has told thenff.com that the team is even more determined to get a win for Nigeria and Coach Sunday Oliseh.

“We want to win the game for Nigeria and we believe that securing the African Nations Championship (CHAN) ticket, in Rwanda will hasten the complete recovery of our head coach,”Salami said.

Enyimba goalkeeper Femi Thomas, who was cover for Sunshine Stats goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa in the first leg, said Nigeria are ready for battle in Ouagadougou.

“We are ready for Burkina Faso, we have been training hard for the game and we are just going to play our normal game to win,” he said.

“I am calling on Nigerians to support and pray for us as we will do our own job on the field.”

Nigeria are seeking a second appearance in the competition reserved for players plying their trade in their domestic leagues after they finished third on their debut last year.

Last weekend, the Eagles defeated Burkina Faso 2-0 in the first leg played in Port Harcourt with goals from Gbolahan Salami and Bature Yaro.

But Burkina Faso coach Traore Idrissa was far from impressed and boasted Les Etalons could overturn this advantage within 30 minutes of the return leg.

The CHAN Eagles carved out the better chances in Port Harcourt, but the Burkinabes also threatened the Nigeria goal at least twice. Assistant coach Salisu Yusuf, in for the ailing Sunday Oliseh, is expected to ring a number of changes in the starting XI on Sunday at the August 4 Stadium in Ouagadougou.

Rightback Solomon Kwambe is ruled out due to injury and his place could be taken by Orji Kalu or Matthew Etim, who was handed a late call-up.

The Eagles defence led by Abia Warriors ace Austin Oboroakpo will be tested, but in attack Nigeria boast of several players who have goals in them  Gbolahan Salami, Bature Yaro, Chisom Chikatara, Osas Okoro and Ezekiel Bassey.

“We do not expect an easy game and so we will fight as well,” said coach Yusuf.

Burkina Faso were reportedly missing several players for the first leg and are expected to strengthen the team for this Nigerian visit.

Kick-off time on Sunday is 5pm Nigerian time.
