  • We won’t return to palace, Ibadan Obas dare Olubadan

The war of words raging between Ibadan first class monarch, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji and supposed members of his council under the aegis of Olubadan-in-council again got more fuel as the Ibadan Obas, comprising members of the Olubadan-in-council and promoted Baales on Wednesday kicked against the directive of the Olubadan urging them drop their crowns and return to the palace.

The monarchs described the directive as hypocritical and an aspersion on the review of the laws governing traditional institution in Oyo State, which approves their installation as beaded crown wearing kings.

Oba Adetunji had in a reaction to the various accusations leveled against him by the Obas asked the Olubadan-in-council members among them to remove their crowns and come back to the palace to perform their roles as members of his council.

But the Obas, led by Otun Olubadan, Oba (Dr.) Lekan Balogun faulted the highly referred monarch, insisting that none of the issues raised in their allegations against the “nefarious activities going on in his palace such as non-screening of prospective Mogajis (family heads) and Baales (village head) by the council before installation; the cash and carry manner by which people now get positions of Mogaji and Baale, leading to the appointment of more than one Mogaji from the same compound and relinquishing of the palace authority to ‘Olori’ (the wife of the monarch) among others have been answered.”

The Ibadan Obas maintained that events had overtaken the court judgement being referred to, noting that aside the fact that there’s an appeal pending on the same judgement, the issue of review of the traditional law in the state had since become a statewide one, encompassing Ibadan and other cities and towns which till now has not been disputed.

They also averred that the same reform which conferred on them the new titles of His Royal Majesties and Highnesses also elevated the Olubadan to His Imperial Majesty from

The two foremost monarchs stated that the days of using traditional rulers by politicians to get what they want were no longer fashionable in modern day society.

According to the two monarchs, the federal government must desist from using traditional rulers as fire fighters.

They bared their minds when the Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Sanusi paid a courtesy call at the Popoyemoja , Ibadan  palace of the Olubadan on Monday.

“It was discussed in Abuja that traditional rulers should not be turned to fire fighters. When there is need for political leadership to get to the people they will turn to palaces.

“When they want to do national consensus like population census, like vaccinations then they will go to palaces they will turn to Kabiyesis , Emirs, obis and so on to reach the people . So, that is also noted. And since you have come to the first university in Nigeria, the University of Ibadan on the invitation of the Sigma Club, they came here two weeks ago for the invitation of the Olubadan and we are happy that kabiyesi the Olubadan is one of the royal guests. Other stakeholders who also lend their voice include, top government functionaries, the state security chiefs, community leaders, interest groups, scholars, teachers, members of the academic community, women groups, trade groups, civil society groups, and various non-governmental organizations.

The event was the 2018 annual stakeholder’s conference on action against child trafficking and labour to commemorate the United Nations World Day against Child Labour. It held at the J. Travers Place, inside St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Bashorun, Ibadan.

The event with the theme “Generation: Safe and Healthy” was organized by the Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan.

On his part, the Commissioner for Education, Science and technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela said the stakeholders meeting had achieved its objectives by giving adequate information to the people and educating them on the responsibility of every individual in ensuring the rights of any child is not violated.

According to him, whatever happens today is a product of the past and whatever people do to children today have an effect on their future.

He said, “The truth is that culture and custom often times cripple the right and privileges of children but the Oyo state government is trying all within its power to ensure that the future of children within the state is not jeopardized. There are conflicting figures on out of school children in the southwest but the World Bank has given a grant to help states curb the menace.

“It is a five-year project and government is already working on ensuring all children have access to education which is a fundamental right. The way the grant works is that if you don’t perform, you cannot access funds. And I am sure we will soon nip the menace in the bud,” Olowofela said.

The Commissioner for Women affairs, Mrs Atinuke Oshunkoya also reiterated that the state government is committed to implementing the child rights law and enforcing it across every nook and cranny of the state, adding that every effort of the ministry at present is geared towards ensuring a better future devoid of abuses for every child within the state.

Oyo state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, who was represented by the state Command’s Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, stated that the police is aware of the need to protect children and is willing to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure that the Child Rights Law is enforced and violators punished to ensure a better future for the children and a safer environment for everyone.

He urged people to see the police as partners in progress and work with them to ensure the complete protection of children within the state.

In his welcome address, the Director of JDPC, Rev. Fr Ezekiel Ade Owoeye stated that it is evident that the problem of child trafficking and labour and other child rights abuses are as a result of poverty, overpopulation in the family, unemployment, lack of information and a willingness to exploit children among other issues.

He stated that the 2017 stakeholders’ conference revealed that there is a need to create more awareness and campaign, adding that, “it is apparent that many children are still being affected and are vulnerable to child trafficking and labour. There is a need for stakeholders to come up with strategic actions to contribute to curbing the problem so that children in Oyo state can represent a generation that is safe and healthy,” she said.

The guest lecturer, a child development enthusiast expert, Mr. Taiwo Akinlami who shared his personal ordeal while growing up enjoined parents to be conscious of injecting positive values and views into their children as that would sharpen their world view in their adult years.

Highpoint of the event was the decoration of notable individuals as child rights ambassadors.

  • May Day: Ajimobi promises better workers’ welfare

As labour demands reinstatement of sacked colleagues

The Workers’ Day ceremony was observed with less fanfare in Oyo State on Tuesday due to the ongoing mourning of the Speaker of the state assembly, Hon. Michael Adeyemo, who died last Friday.

The Head of Service (HoS) in the state, Mrs. Hannah Ogunesan, who represented Governor Abiola Ajimobi at the ceremony which held at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, urged workers to continue to support Ajimobi’s  administration with a promise to sustain their welfare.

In addition to scores of workers and labour leaders at the stadium, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Adetunji, joined the celebrators at the stadium.

Ogunesan reiterated the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, giving an example of promotion letters being currently distributed. She pointed out that workers have also been sent on local and overseas trainings. “The administration of Senator Abiola Ajimobi shall continue to place priority on the welfare of workers generally, while our continued support is expected for the administration to continue to succeed in its good policies”. She said.

In his address, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Waheed Olojede, said that the union appreciated the certificate verification exercise carried out by the state government which resulted in the sack of many workers. He, however, said that the union had also verified the results of those accused of certificate forgery by visiting the institutions concerned but discovered that some of the sacked workers were innocent of the allegation.

Olojede, therefore, appealed to the governor for an executive pardon for the workers in the category.

He said:  “We have not left the government of Oyo State into the verification alone. On our part as labour leaders, we have gone to those institutions too for our own verification, and we have discovered that a good number of these workers that were sacked were innocent of the charges. We have put our evidence before the government that information gathered is confirming to us that there is need for us to demand from our Governor for an executive pardon.

“We are therefore using this occasion of this year’s celebration to put this appeal at the door step of the Governor of Oyo State to consider the cases of these people who are innocent ones among them for reinstatement. Some of them have died; some are still living in bad condition; some are ill; some are on hospital beds, unhappy, with their relatives losing them to death. This is why we are appealing that their cases be re-considered and referred back to work.”

The union leader also reiterated the demands by the national leadership of labour unions for a national living wage of N66,500.

He argued: “If an average  national legislator can earn allowance and salary of N14.4m monthly which can pay the salary of 215 workers based on the N66,500 living wage we are asking for, an economy that sustains N14,250,000 to a single worker in Nigeria would be able to sustain N66,500 to the generality of workers in Nigeria.”

  • ‘Crowning of new kings will boost Olubadan status’

‘Crowning of new kings will boost Olubadan status’

Chief Mukaila Balogun, the Osi-Balogun Afijagba in Oyo State, says the recent elevation and crowning of 21 high chiefs and baales as kings will  boost the status  of the Olubadan stool.

Balogun  told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan that  the development  would  not desecrate the Olubadan stool as some people believe  but  enhance its  status.

“The elevation should be a thing of joy for all Ibadan indigenes because we have been yawning for long for the review of the 1957 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration.

“In the past, three governors had  tried to carry out the review but could not succeed and history has been made as regards  successful review of the Olubadan Chieftaincy System that paved way for the installation of 21 new kings in Ibadan land.

“All these kings are under His Imperial Majesty, Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, so there is nothing like relegation in the position of Olubadan.

“Even those who opposed the elevation of the 21 high chiefs and baales knew that government action was in order but were politicising the issue,’’ he said.

Balogun implored those opposed to the elevation  to have a rethink and support Gov.  Abiola Ajumobi in bringing rapid development to Ibadan land.

NAN recalls that 21 high chiefs and baales in Ibadan were elevated to kingship status by the Oyo State Government following  the recommendations of a committee.

The kings received their instrument of office after coronation on Aug.  27  inspite of  strong opposition by  the Oba Saliu Adetunji and one of the high chiefs, Rashidi Ladoja,  who was the governor of the state between 2003 and 2007.
