Eid prayers, Sallah celebration peaceful in Plateau, as police beef up security

Plateau State was peaceful, as Muslims celebrated Eid-el-kabir across Plateau state.

Checks by The Nation in Jos revealed that the economic conditions few days to sallah were friendlier compared to last sallah festival. A measure of rice has come down to as low as N1,300 compared to last year’s N2,500.

Prices of livestock, however, remain very high, even higher than last year’s. In fact, most residents waited till the last hours to purchase their rams to perform the normal ritual blood sacrifice.

This led to traffic congestion across the Jos metropolis, as business activities reached its peak Thursday evening.

Those traveling out of Jos for sallah could not have enough vehicles due to the rush to get to their destination unfailingly. Almost all commercial vehicles departing motor parks in Jos were overloaded because residents came to send “weigh bills” to their desired destinations.

Travellers, however, had a relief as the price of petrol remained stable. But there was no visible respite in the price of food stuff.

The least ram available in the market at the eve of sallah went for N80,000, while bigger ones ranged between for N150,000 and N500,000.

In the area of security, as preparations intensified, the Plateau State Police Command mapped out strategic security measures to ensure a peaceful and secure environment across the state during and after the Sallah festivities.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Adesina, announced comprehensive deployments across all 17 Local Government Areas, with heightened patrols in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis and increased surveillance at mosques, prayer grounds, parks, and other public gathering areas.

To strengthen security further, operatives from the State Intelligence Department (SID) have been mobilised for proactive intelligence gathering to detect and neutralise potential threats.

As part of the festive security strategy, the Police Command has banned the use of commercial tricycles (Keke Napep) on Eid Day, while reaffirming the existing ban on commercial motorcycles within Jos-Bukuru and the broader Jos master-plan. The CP warned that violators will be arrested and prosecuted.

“The Command is fully prepared to deal decisively with anyone or group of persons who may attempt to disrupt public peace during this period,” Adesina warned.

He urged parents, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to educate their wards and followers on the importance of maintaining peace during the celebration and encouraged residents to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities.

As at 9am Friday morning, the Eid grounds in Jos Fibre Mosque, State Secretariat, Bukuru, Ali kazaure, State Low-cost Faringada, Bauch road etc were already filled with Muslims set for the 2 rakaah prayers.

Sallah: Ram prices surge amid low supply

Some ram sellers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Wednesday attributed the high cost of rams to insecurity and low supply from the Northwest.

The traders, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) during a market survey in Abuja, said the low supply was also due to the closure of Nigeria’s borders.

Malam Ahmed Mai-Samari, a livestock dealer at the Dei-Dei livestock market, told NAN that rams supply to major cities was far below expectations compared to 2024, especially from neighbouring countries.

“You know we mostly get these animals from Niger and other nearby countries that share borders with us in the North, especially the moderately sized ones.

“Now, we have to rely solely on local supply from household livestock farmers, which is limited.

“Many traders have even left the business for more profitable ventures,” he said.

He noted that the price of rams had doubled compared to 2025, attributing this to rising transportation costs and the overall cost of living.

“A ram that sold for N200,000 in 2024 now goes for N400,000. Only the rich can afford it now.

“Prices vary depending on size: smaller rams cost between N150,000 and N190,000, medium ones go for N200,000 to N250,000, while large rams range from N350,000 to as much as N1 million,” he explained.

Similarly, Mr Sanusi Abdullahi, a roadside livestock trader in Dutse, said ram prices ranged from N200,000 to N700,000.

He added that sourcing the animals locally had been stressful and costly due to limited access from Niger Republic, likely caused by ongoing political tensions.

“I and my boys had to go from village to village across different states, gather the rams, and transport them here. It hasn’t been easy,” he said.

On sales, Abdullahi revealed he had sold only seven out of about 120 rams in two days, though he remained hopeful of selling at least half before Sallah, even at minimal profit.

In Bwari, another roadside trader, Malam Mustapha Aminu, popularly known as “Biggie,” also lamented low patronage, blaming it on inflation and economic hardship.

According to him, while many Muslims wish to participate in the Eid el-Kabir sacrifice, most can no longer afford it.

“Even though the cheapest ram at my stand goes for N100,000, only a few people have bought so far. This time last year, I had sold nearly all my stock.

“Things were tough then too, but this year is worse. Still, we hope sales will pick up closer to Sallah,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Hameed Raji, a buyer in Bwari, said he had opted for a goat instead of a ram due to the high cost.

He explained that he bought an average-sized goat for N70,000, which he planned to slaughter for his family and friends.

Similarly, Mrs Rukayya Abdullahi said she and her husband chose to buy and slaughter three big chickens at N20,000 each instead of a ram.

“This will not only serve our visitors but also save us from borrowing money to buy a ram.

“By Allah’s grace, we hope to afford a ram next year,” she said.

Eid el-Kabir is celebrated globally by Muslim faithful and involves the slaughter of rams as part of worship, symbolising sacrifice and sharing meals with loved ones.

Why we are selling subsidised Sallah rams, by Lagos council boss

Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area, Hon Rasaq Olusola Ajala, has explained that his Council decided to sell Rams to Muslims at subsidised rate to meet their religious obligations as part of his administration’s initiatives to ensure that the people feel the positive impact of democracy.

The LCDA chair made this submission during the 8th edition of subsidised sale of Sallah Rams, which was held yesterday at the Council’s Secretariat, Town Planning Way, Ilupeju, Lagos.

The programme, which started eight years ago, held early morning yesterday with a huge crowd of the LCDA residents, intent on buying Rams for the eid el kabir celebration, in attendance.

In this year’s edition, over 1000 healthy Rams are up for sale at a subsidised rate of N75,000 each for Rams that could ordinarily sell for as high as N200,000.00 and above in the open market.

According the LCDA Chair: ” This subsidised Rams sale is about meeting the needs of our Muslim brothers and sisters in accordance with the dictates of the Holy Quran, just as we sell chickens at subsidised rates during Christmas to our Christian brothers and sisters. Democracy is about people and their welfare, and this is what this scheme is all about”

To benefit from this scheme, the Chairman explained, “you do not need to be connected to anyone in the Council. The only requirements are your voter’s card, which is to identify you as a voter in the local council development area and your radio and television licence, to show that you are a patriotic citizen of the Council.”

The subsidised Rams sale event, according to participants, demonstrates vividly the organisational acumen of the Council under the leadership of Mr Rasaq Ajala.

Although a mammoth crowd had converged on the Council premises as early as 6am, the sale was so orderly that the possibility of stampede or any untoward occurrence was almost nil.

The buyers formed a long queue by the entrance to the gate and they ushered into the premises, in groups between 15 and 20, to a tent where their means of identification, voters’ card,  is screened. Upon satisfactory screening, the buyer is given a number, and he then joins  another queue from where he is  ushered into another tent where payment is made. The receipt has the card number earlier given at the screening tent. It is this screening card number and the receipt he presents at the Ram Collection Point.

Tajudeen Ajagbe,  a resident of Ilupeju and one of the buyers who arrived early enough to be among the second set of those who were ushered into the Council, described the arrangement as “seamless and commendable.”

“Hon Ajala, our able and capable Chairman has demonstrated superb leadership abilities. What you are witnessing now is a testimony to those leadership qualities. This delightful and commendable subsidised Sallah Rams sale, which started eight years ago, is a reflection of the Chair’s leadership style and his undying love for the downtrodden. He has etched his name on the right side of history, and posterity will remember him for his people-friendly programmes, one of which is what you are witnessing now.”

  • A sacrilegious attack on human lives

A sacrilegious attack on human lives

    • By Kene Obiezu

Sir: On March 27, 16 hunters of Northern extraction travelling from Port Harcourt to Kano for Sallah ran into killers stationed at Uromi, Edo State. All it took was a false alarm branding the travellers bandits for the killers to mobilize their bloodlust, bayonets, and butchery skills and fires. All 16 hunters were killed and fed to the fire. The killings have since provoked a national outcry.

There is a sense in which smouldering anger in many Nigerians has congealed into murderous rage. Many Nigerians driven to despair by the insecurity ravaging the country, disillusioned with the system which fails to stem the tide and desperate for some action are too easily carried away by the promise of jungle justice. All they often need to ignite their killer rage are killer cries.

All over Nigeria, there is a mounting sense of frustration that the criminal justice system always crumbles under pressure, with criminals often getting what amounts to no more than a slap on the wrist.

Even worse is the fact that many Nigerians believe rather justifiably that the Nigerian criminal justice system is selective, favouring the powerful and punishing the poor. So, for many Nigerians, whenever the opportunity arises to execute swift justice, they take it with both hands.

To fix this murderous mentality of mob justice, which typically catches innocent people cold, Nigeria must reform its justice system to preclude jungle justice. With Nigeria’s criminal justice system struggling so badly, many criminals are on the loose seeking the next spot for their criminal adventures. In Uromi, they laid low under the guise of vigilantes until unsuspecting hunters walked into their trap.

A nationwide condemnation has followed the killing, but the difference that must be made this time around is that condemnation must yield concrete action, which is the prosecution and incarceration of the perpetrators. All those who partook in the gruesome killings of the innocent hunters are heartless criminals who have no place in any sane society. They must be transparently tried and punished in accordance with the law.

Unfortunately, some Nigerians have invoked memories of lynching in other parts of the country to play ethnic and religious cards, but a killing is a killing and no human life is inferior to the other.

Nigerians must refuse to become that country where the gruesome killing of citizens is not only left unpunished but justified under any guise.
