    Samsung builds AI into devices

Original equipment manufacturer (OEM), Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, said it has built Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its devices based on its innovation heritage and deep understanding of how people use their phones.

President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, TM Roh who spoke during the unveiling of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24, said the company is poised to unleash new mobile experiences with Galaxy AI, adding that Galaxy S series leads the way into a new era that will forever change how mobile devices empower users.

Roh, said:  “The Galaxy S24 series transforms our connection with the world and ignites the next decade of mobile innovation. Galaxy AI is built on our innovation heritage and deep understanding of how people use their phones. We’re excited to see how our users around the world empower their everyday lives with Galaxy AI to open new possibilities.”

According to Roh, AI amplifies nearly every experience on Galaxy S24 series, from enabling barrier-free communication with intelligent text and call translations, to maximizing creative freedom with Galaxy’s ProVisual Engine, to setting a new standard for search that will change how Galaxy users discover the world around them.

Galaxy AI, he added, introduces meaningful intelligence aimed at enhancing every part of life, especially the phone’s most fundamental role: communication, saying ‘When you need to defy language barriers, Galaxy S24 makes it easier than ever.’

Other include chat with another student or colleague from abroad; book a reservation while on vacation in another country which are all possible with Live Translate, two-way, real-time voice and text translations of phone calls within the native app. No third-party apps are required, and on-device AI keeps conversations completely private.

With Interpreter, live conversations can be instantly translated on a split-screen view so people standing opposite each other can read a text transcription of what the other person has said. It even works without cellular data or Wi-Fi.

CEO, Samsung Electronics West Africa, Sung-won Jung, said for messages and other apps, Chat Assist can help perfect conversational tones to ensure communication sounds as it was intended: like a polite message to a coworker or a short and catchy phrase for a social media caption.

“AI built into Samsung Keyboard can also translate messages in real-time in 13 languages. In the car, Android Aut will automatically summarize incoming messages and suggest relevant replies and actions, like sending someone your ETA, so you can stay connected while staying focused on the road.

“Organization also gets a big boost with Note Assist in Samsung Notes, featuring AI-generated summaries, template creation that streamlines notes with pre-made formats, and cover creation to make notes easy to spot with a brief preview. For voice recordings, even when there are multiple speakers, Transcript Assist uses AI and Speech-to-Text technology to transcribe, summarize and even translate recordings,” he said.

Product Manager, MX Division, Samsung Electronics West Africa, Stephen Okwara, said communication isn’t the only way Galaxy S24 series takes the fundamental benefits of the phone into the future, adding that online search has transformed nearly every aspect of life. Galaxy S24 marks a milestone in the history of search as the first phone to debut intuitive, gesture-driven Circle to Search with Google.

To give Galaxy users an incredible new tool, Galaxy turned to the worldwide leader of search, Google, and opened new forms of discovery with a simple gesture. With a long press on the home button, users can circle, highlight, scribble on, or tap anything on Galaxy S24’s screen to see helpful, high-quality search results.

“Seeing a beautiful landmark in the background of a friend’s social media post or a surprising fun fact on YouTube Shorts can quickly become an accurate search to learn more – without having to leave that app,” he added.

Galaxy S24 series’ ProVisual Engine is a comprehensive suite of AI-powered tools that transform image capturing abilities and maximize creative freedom every step of the way, from setting up a shot all the way to sharing it on social. Gone are shaky, pixelated images taken from far away.

“Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Quad Tele System, with new 5x optical zoom lens, works with the 50MP sensor to enable optical-quality performance at zoom levels from 2x, 3x, 5x to 10x magnification thanks to Adaptive Pixel Sensor. Images also show crystal clear results at 100x with enhanced digital zoom.

With upgraded Nightography capabilities, photos and videos shot on Galaxy S24 Space Zoom are brilliant in any conditions, even when zoomed in. Capture more light in dim conditions with Galaxy S24 Ultra’s larger pixel size, now 1.4 ìm, which is 60% bigger compared to the previous model.

Blur is reduced on Galaxy S24 Ultra with wider optical image stabilizer (OIS) angles and enhanced hand-shake compensation. When recording videos, both front and rear cameras are equipped with Dedicated ISP Block for noise reduction, and Galaxy S24 analyzes gyro information to distinguish between the filmer’s movement and the subjects. This allows more effective noise removal and clear videos in the dark, even from far away.

After great shots are captured, innovative Galaxy AI editing tools enable simple edits like erase, re-compose, and remaster. For easier and more efficient optimizations, Edit Suggestion uses Galaxy AI to suggest perfectly suitable tweaks for each photo. To give users even more creative control and freedom, Generative Edit can fill in parts of an image background with generative AI.

Joy Tim-Ayoola, Head of Mobile Division, Samsung West Africa, said that Galaxy S24 is also the first Galaxy S series to be designed with recycled steel and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU).

“Galaxy S24 Ultra features a minimum of 40per cent recycled steel in the speakers, and it includes a minimum of 10per cent pre-consumer recycled TPU in the side and volume keys. Additionally, every Galaxy S24 comes in a packaging box made from 100per cent recycled paper material,” she said.

  • Mastercard, Samsung tackle digital identity headaches

mastercard and Samsung have partnered  to explore and deliver a better way for people to conveniently and securely verify their digital identity on the mobile devices they use every day.

The firms said people today are joggling multiple passwords and documents in an attempt to keep their data and money safe.  They have to repeatedly provide large amounts of personal information to numerous agents, and the more it is shared, the greater the risk.  They lack control over their personal identity data and where they do have rights, there is often little transparency.

President, Cyber & Intelligence at Mastercard, Ajay Bhalla, said in a world of physical and digital convergence, there is need for a solution that takes this reality into consideration.

He said: “Our digital and physical lives are merging and we need a digital identity solution that reflects this reality. Without control over how their data is used, people rely on outdated systems that can compromise their security. Our collaboration with Samsung advances a digital identity solution that is bound to a trusted device – the mobile phone – which is used by millions of people every day.”

The two firms say people will soon be able to access a digital identity capability on their devices for interactions in both the physical and digital worlds. This will provide consumers with a more efficient way to interact with businesses and service providers, whether opening a bank account, accessing e-mail and social media, video streaming or shopping online.

EVP and Head of Service Business office at Samsung Electronics Mobile Division, Yongje Kim, said: “At Samsung, we believe consumers should be in complete control of the privacy and security of their personal identity and we’re excited to work with Mastercard to bring the first digital identity solution to Samsung smartphones.”

The collaboration with Samsung builds on Mastercard’s commitment to improve how people manage and use their digital identity, and follows the publication of the company’s model for digital identity in an increasingly connected world.

The model is founded on user-centric principles such as data ownership, confidentiality, consent and transparency, embodies privacy-by-design and does not collect identity data.

  • Samsung fights inequality with equal training opportunities

In 2014, Godwin Oghenegueke was hired as a cleaner of Samsung’s welding floor, and he never expected he would have a chance to be one of the first beneficiaries of Samsung’s free-of-charge welding training course.

Oghenegueke said; “I started by watching over the shoulders of the students grinding, welding and coating, seeing this, the Korean instructors invited me to help them with small tasks. Even though it was a small thing, having seen my commitment and hard work, they invited me to train with them.’”

Today, God is an internationally-certified welder, permanently hired by Samsung as a professional welder.

Goanghun Kim, a senior trainer at Samsung’s Welding Qualification Center (WQC) noted “passion” and “enthusiasm to learn and improve” are the most valued attributes they seek in Samsung’s future team members.

“There was lot of resistance amongst existing trainees. They saw him as beneath them. We told those students that background is not important. As long as you are devoted in developing your skills, that’s what matters to us.”

Creating equal opportunities and instilling an inclusive work culture enabled Samsung to break record after record. Motivated by trust and without the constraints of societal prejudice, Samsung’s Nigerian trainees and employees were propelled to keep pushing the boundaries of industry norms.

Samsung can proudly boast a 100 percent pass rate in the international welder training program. These achievements eventually led the SHI-MCI integration and fabrication yard to become one of the few companies in Africa to be awarded accreditation and training certificates by national and international bodies including the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and the International Institute of Welding.

Welding trainer, Goanghun Kim, believes Samsung’s work culture and equal opportunity policy are just enablers and the achievements are due to the more than 3,000 individuals just like Godwin who worked tirelessly.

“Nigerians should be proud and empowered by these achievements. This proves the competency and potential of Nigerian people in the international job market and will help establish Nigeria as an engineering hub to global manufacturing industries.

“Nigerians are ambitious and hard working. I have never seen such enthusiasm and eagerness to improve and to learn.”

An international welding certificate training course similar to Oghenegueke’s can cost on average between N2.5-2.8 million per person, which makes the course unaffordable for many Nigerians without extra financial support.

Oghenegueke is one of many inspiring stories from the Egina project. “I would not have been able to afford this training without Samsung’s help. I know of many lives which improved thanks to the project.

‘’Some people came in as helpers and now they are assistant managers, scaffolders, welders, operators or riggers. I also came in as nobody and now I can help my grandma and younger siblings.”

In 2018, at the peak of the construction and integration of the Egina FPSO, over 3,000 Nigerians were employed by Samsung (SHI-MCI).

Samsung chose to meet this challenge head-on not by mobilising employees from overseas but instead  investing 560,000 man hours of training programs with one goal in mind: to identify future Nigerian talent who could participate in the historic completion of the Egina FPSO.

This transformation resulted in thousands of Nigerians eventually joining Samsung team to form the core of Samsung’s first heavy industries operation on the African continent.
