Ambode to host world Igbo Day
The stage is set as the Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode hosts world Igbo day in Lagos following the commencement of the celebration in Enugu on Thursday.
The president of Lagos state chapter of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Fabian Onwughalu said all necessary preparation have been made to mark the world Igbo day celebration taking place in October in a dynamic way as big tycoons such as the governors from Anambra and Enugu state, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other top dignitaries are expected to grace the occasion.
Similarly, Onwughalu noted that Ifeanyi Ubah, the former governorship aspirant for Anambra State in 2013 election is expected to be the guest speaker of the day, alongside the president of Coscharis Motors, Dr. Cosmas Maduku is also expected to be there as they have received confirmation to the invitations sent out.
The event is expected to address both common and internal interest including the celebration and preservation of the Igbo culture and Heritage.
The president of Ohaneze Ndigbo also said that the Igbos in Lagos are been neglected by the present administration as none of them were considered a member of Ambode’s cabinet despite owning 50 percent of the lands in Lagos, but however pleaded with governor Akinwunmi Ambode to grant certificate of Occupancy to the landlords so as to build their confidence.
The woman leader of the group, Chidozie Ada Ofoegbu said the women are fully ready for the event as all plans have been made. Part of which include displaying and presentation of various cultural dance steps, presentation of the Kola nut and many other things.

Obaseki wins Edo governorship election
The All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has won the Edo State governorship election based on the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday.
Obaseki was declared winner of the election after polling 319, 483 votes, while his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, garnered 253, 173.
He edged out Ize-Iyamu with 66, 310 votes in the election held across Edo State on Wednesday.
A total of 1, 900, 223 voters registered for the election, while 622,039 were accredited.
The APC won in 13 out of the 18 local government areas of the state and the PDP triumphed in five.
Votes polled by other political parties are listed below:

ACD – 1,350
PDC – 1, 289

Tribute to King Sunny Adé at 70
Popular Jùjú music maestro, Sunday Adeniyi popularly known by his stage name King Sunny Adé, celebrates his 70th birthday on Thursday.
He was born on September 22nd, 1946 in Oshogbo, Nigeria, into a royal family in Ondo state, Nigeria.
Adé began his musical career with Moses Olaiya’s Federal Rhythm Dandies, a highlife band. He later left the group to form his own band, the Green Spots in 1967 before renaming it African Beats, after various issues with song recorders.
King Sunny Adé is a worldwide known musician, popularly known by his dexterous dancing steps and mastery of the guitar as well as his sensational way of singing. He is fond of using Gangan (talking drum), sekere, Bata, and other Yoruba culture drums.
The Jùjú music legend is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and a pioneer. He introduced various types of instruments into Jùjú music, such as the pedal steel guitar, clarinet, vibraphone, tenor guitar, synthesizers and many more, making Afro music more enticing to people.
K.S.A has also won a lot of awards in the music industry, both internationally and locally for inspiring young musicians, his contribution to world music, as well as being the first African to be nominated twice for the Grammy Award in the folk/ethnic category.
Adé’s success in pursuing his dream has inspired young Nigeria artistes over the years. His musical life has changed the mind of many and paved way for other Afro-pop artistes including Lagbaja who is known for using saxophone, Yoruba culture drums and other orchestral instrument.
Sunny Adé’s songs have also made Nigeria Popular all over the world, making him a good ambassador of the country. As a contemporary musician, he has used various sensational songs to promote and introduce the Yoruba culture to millions of people all over the world.
Having released more than 100 albums over the years, sold more than 200,000 copies each and also collaborated with top Nigeria musicians, he could be addressed as one of the most prolific musicians in Africa.

Yinka Quadri clocks 57
Popular Nigeria Nollywood Yoruba actor, Yinka Quadri on Tuesday marks his 57th birthday.
Born on September 6, 1959 into the family of Mr and Mrs Quadri in Lagos Island, Lagos, Nigeria, the Kwara state born actor is one of the most respected Yoruba actors in the movie industry.
Quadri started his acting career in 1976 in a drama group called Afopina Theater Group with Taiwo Olayinka along with some group of friends.
He has since starred in more than 90 Yoruba films such as Olaniyonu, Kutupu, Kura, Ekun, Ojiji, Èebúdolá tèmi, Araba, Ilari, Bolode O’ku, Apaadi, Ojo Idajo, Abulesowo, Niwoyi Ola, Ilekun Olorun and many more since his debut television series titled Agbodorogun.
He has also won many awards over the years in the movie industry, as well as banging a deal as brand ambassador for Al-Amanat Islamic Estate, located at Apeje Road, Imota Ikorodu, Lagos.
The Yoruba movie legend who recently celebrated his 36 years in the movie industry is married with five children.

Three iconic Nigerians make records in Rio Olympics
Three Nigeria athletes at the ongoing Rio de Janeiro Olympic made games records which will forever be remember in the history of Rio Olympics for years to come.
The trio records makers are two table tennis stars, Segun Toriola and Aruna Quadri as well as Rower, Chierika Ukogu.
Toriola, 41, made his 7th appearance in the current Games, equaling the table tennis record which made him the most capped African Olympian in the history of tennis.
Nigeria table tennis star Aruna Quadri set another continental record after the Oyo born player became the first African to reach the quarterfinals of men’s singles event at Rio 2016 Olympic Games before crashing out after suffering a 4-0 defeat to China’s star and world number one Ma Long, in the Men’s Singles category.
Ukogu however, became the first ever rower to represent Nigeria in the Olympics after qualifying for top classifications in the rowing even in Rio, placing fifth in the third quarter final of the Women’s single sculls after clocking a time of 7:54.44 secs.
