  • Collation of results yet to commence in Niger

    In Niger state, collation of results are still being collated in all the zonal centers of INEC across as some results are still arriving local government collation centres.

    The venue for the presidential collation centre at the State INEC office is still empty, though decorated in preparation for collation to start.

    The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Samuel Egwu who confirmed this to newsmen at about 3pm said that results are still being expected from the local government areas.

    According to him, all elections were concluded on Saturday across the state and there was no extension of voting anywhere.

    The delay in the arrival of results,  according to the REC, is due to the challenges of not being able to commence voting on time some polling units due to cases of malfunction of card readers.

    He also attributed the delay to the distance of some local government areas from Minna, the state capital.

     

  • INEC commences distribution of sensitive materials in Niger – REC

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger says it has commenced the distribution of sensitive materials to the 25 local government areas of the state.

    Prof. Samuel Egwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) branch office, Minna on Wednesday.

    He said the electoral materials were moved from the Minna branch of CBN to the local government areas, accompanied by security personnel.

    “We are starting the transportation with Rijau, Mariga, Shiroro, Bida, Bako and Burgo Local Government Areas under tight security cover,” he said.

    Egwu said that heavily armed security personnel would escort the materials to the local government area of the state.

    He explained that the sensitive materials, comprising ballot papers and result sheets, would be transported under tight security to the 25 local governments for the conduct of Presidential and National Assembly elections.

    He said “The timely and transparent distribution of sensitive materials  “to the various local government area showed that INEC was willing and prepared to conduct free, fair and credible elections in the state.

    So, we want these materials to get to the various local government areas, this evening, and by tomorrow morning, it would be distributed to the various registration areas.

    The sensitive materials which were handed over to INEC by the CBN Minna Branch Controller, Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim, were arranged and customized according to each local government areas.

  • REC declares ballot papers for Niger East, North missing

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger State on Friday said that elections for the senatorial positions of Niger East and Niger North may not hold on Saturday as the ballot papers meant for the zone were missing.

    Prof. Samuel Egwu, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, made the declaration while interacting with newsmen in Minna.

    “The issue has been reported to the INEC’s Headquarters in Abuja for urgent attention.

    “The officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria saddled with the responsibility of securing the electoral sensitive materials have gone  to Abuja for the last batch of the sensitive materials for  Saturday’s elections in the state, so we are waiting,’’ he said.

    Egwu said that 85 per cent of the needed facilities for the conduct of free and fare elections in the state had been provided with the non-sensitive materials already moved to various destinations across the 25 local government areas of the state.

    He said that the commission trained 23,000 ad hoc staff for the elections in the state.

    The REC also said that 2,181,400 eligible voters would participate during the general elections in the state.

    INEC registers 95,434 voters in Niger, deploys 742 personnel

    The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) in Niger on Thursday said it deployed 742 personnel to political wards across the state  to ensure massive registration of eligible voters.

    Prof. Samuel Egwu, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, made the disclosure in an interview in Minna.

    “We have so far registered about 95, 434 which consists of 61,867 males and 33,747 females and issued them with their permanent voters cards.

    “We also have 132,985 unclaimed PVCs, 366 seeking transfer and 163 un-printed and omitted cases, and 465 cases of lost of permanent voters cards.”

    He said that the commission is also attending to 553 cases of corrections in their permanent voters cards.

    “Those that had earlier registered and had not collected their Permanent Voter Cards ( PVCs ) should also come forward for collection in our offices across the 25 local government areas of the state,” Egwu added.

    The REC of INEC solicited the support of stakeholders including traditional and religious leaders in mobilizing eligible residents to participate in the ongoing Continuous Voters’ Registration in the state.

    “I urge media organisations to deploy all sustainable and effective mass media strategies to mobilise eligible voters to participate actively in the exercise.

    “We have also reached out to the leaders of various political parties to mobilise more eligible voters to register,” Egwu said.

    He said that educating eligible residents on the importance of acquiring PVC was necessary as it would allow them the opportunity to vote in future elections.
