Eto’o  incurs CAF’s wrath over AFCON conduct

Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) President Samuel Eto’o has been handed a four-match ban for alleged misconduct during the team’s 2-0 defeat by hosts Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations last Friday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said in a statement.

Eto’o was reportedly seen making an angry gesture over refereeing decisions in the presence of CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

Players from both sides also jostled each other, and CAF said on Sunday it had opened investigations into violent confrontations during AFCON matches.

CAF’s disciplinary board fined Eto’o $20,000, a decision FECAFOOT said “lacks any explicit justification”.

“The expedited procedure leading to this decision raises serious concerns regarding the fundamental requirements of a fair process,” FECAFOOT said on Thursday, adding it would appeal.

“FECAFOOT reaffirms its support for its president and its commitment to respecting the principles governing credible disciplinary justice,” it added.

Hosts Morocco will play Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.

Eto’o has  important contribution to make in African football, says Motsepe

Re-elected CAF president Patrice Motsepe told new executive committee member and former Cameroon star Samuel Eto’o on Wednesday in Cairo that the “past remains in the past”.

South African billionaire Motsepe was speaking at a press conference after his organisation held its extraordinary general assembly – the yearly highlight for African football officials.

After an illustrious career with numerous European clubs, including Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea, Eto’o has become a controversial official.

Since being elected head of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) in 2001, he has admitted assaulting a football supporter and been banned by FIFA and CAF.

When video footage went viral of Eto’o attacking a fan after a 2022 World Cup match in Qatar, the four-time African Footballer of the Year publicly apologised.

FIFA barred Eto’o from attending men’s and women’s internationals involving Cameroon for six months over his “offensive behaviour” during the 2024 Women’s under-20 World Cup in Colombia.

CAF suspended one of the greatest African footballers for “seriously violating the principles of ethics, integrity and sportsmanship” by becoming a brand ambassador for a betting organisation.

That ban would have barred Eto’o from seeking an executive committee place on Wednesday at a hotel overlooking the pyramids in the Egyptian capital.

But he successfully appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the ban was lifted late last week, just in time for Eto’o to win a place on the executive committee by acclamation.

In a committee including representatives from each of the six CAF geographical regions, Eto’o was the sole candidate from the Central African Football Federations Union (UNIFFAC).

Reacting to the election of the three-time UEFA Champions League winner, Motsepe said: “The CAF executive committee made a decision about Samuel Eto’o that was overturned by CAS.

“He (Eto’o) has now been elected as one of the leaders of African football, and the most important thing is that we must support him.

“Everyone at CAF must ensure that incidents involving Eto’o in the past must remain in the past.

“Nothing that occurred previously should now be held against him. I believe he has an important contribution to make.”

“Cameroon, under the leadership of Samuel, will return to its glory days,” added the 63-year-old as he prepares to start a second four-year term as the leader of African football.

Eto’o gets  six months FIFA  ban for misconduct

Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) chief Samuel Eto’o has been banned from attending the national team’s matches for six months after violating FIFA’s disciplinary regulations, soccer’s governing body said.

The former Barcelona striker has been president of FECAFOOT since 2021 and will now be barred from all men’s and women’s games across various age groups.

“The sanction was imposed in connection with the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup round-of-16 match between Brazil and Cameroon played in Bogota, Colombia, on 11 September 2024,” FIFA said in a statement.

Details regarding the incidents were not disclosed by FIFA’s disciplinary committee. The statement said Eto’o was deemed guilty of “offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play,” as well as “misconduct” involving officials.

The ban follows a fine imposed on the 43-year-old by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) less than three months ago, stemming from an inquiry into purported breaches of its ethical and integrity standards.

The Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) has rejected an offer of resignation from its president Samuel Eto’o.

Eto’o, 42, offered his resignation during a meeting of Fecafoot’s executive in Yaounde on Monday night, in which the former striker requested for other members of the board to also offer their resignations ‘in good faith’.

The meeting was held as an evaluation of Cameroon’s performance at the men’s Africa Cup of Nations, in which they won just one of their four matches and exited at the round of 16 stage after a two-goal defeat against Nigeria.

A statement from Fecafoot outlined how their executive “unanimously rejected” Eto’o’s offer of resignation, “thus renewing their confidence in him to continue”.

Eto’o was elected Fecafoot president in December 2021 with his tenure overseeing two AFCON tournaments alongside the 2022 World Cup.

Rigobert Song — Eto’o’s former international team-mate — was appointed Cameroon head coach in February 2022, replacing Toni Conceicao following the nation’s AFCON semi-final defeat against Egypt in a penalty shootout.

Song, 47, oversaw Cameroon’s qualification for that year’s World Cup with a play-off win over Algeria, but his side exited at the group stage in Qatar with four points from their three matches.

Cameroon endured a disappointing AFCON campaign, picking up four points from their three group matches before being eliminated by Nigeria.

Song’s record as national team manager has come under scrutiny, with just six wins from his 23 matches in charge.
