  • Sanchez haunts Arsenal as Man Utd extend winning run

Alexis Sanchez returned to North London to haunt former side Arsenal as he scored the opening goal in Manchester United’s 3-1 win at the Emirates on Friday night.

Sanchez partnered Romelu Lukaku in attack as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rotated his side slightly and the Chilean opened scoring when he curled home from an excellent pass from the Belgian.

Two minutes later Lukaku was the provider again as he teed up Jesse Lingard, who calmly slotted past Petr Cech in the Arsenal goal.

The Gunners got one back before the break when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tapped in at the back post but they couldn’t find an equaliser and were punished late on as substitute Anthony Martial fired home on the counter after Cech parried a Paul Pogba shot.

The game had 10 minutes added time due to a face injury suffered by Laurent Koscielny.

Result: Burnley 0-1 Arsenal – Sanchez scores injury-time penalty

Alexis Sanchez scored an injury-time penalty to give Arsenal victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

It was a repeat of last season’s meeting between the sides at the Emirates Stadium, when Chilean Sanchez slotted in a 98th-minute spot-kick to win the game. It was also the third consecutive time that the Gunners had grabbed a winner in stoppage-time against the Clarets.

The three points moves Arsenal up to fourth in the table ahead of north London rivals Tottenham, who drew 1-1 against West Brom on Saturday.

The result was harsh on Sean Dyche’s side, having defended valiantly up until that point and looking like grabbing at least a point, before referee Lee Mason pointed to the spot after defender James Tarkowski pushed Aaron Ramsey.

Petr Cech was the busier of the two goalkeepers, making two crucial saves to deny Johann Berg Gudmundsson, brilliantly tipping the Iceland international’s drive onto the post and keeping out a low, rasping shot.

Robbie Brady also had a free-kick towards the top corner pushed away by Cech.

Arsenal reject £50m from Manchester City for Sanchez

English Premier League side Arsenal have rejected a £50 million bid from rivals Manchester City for Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez.

Sanchez, who scored 24 Premier League goals for the Gunners last season, is out of contract next summer and has reportedly said he wants to play for City manager Pep Guardiola.

Arsenal have rebuffed all approaches for the 28-year-old, and would like City’s Raheem Sterling as part of any deal before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

But Guardiola, who was in charge at Sanchez’s former club FC Barcelona, is understood to want the Chilean as a straight purchase.

England forward Sterling has featured in all three of City’s games so far this season.

However, the 22-year-old is not guaranteed a starting role at Etihad Stadium following the summer arrival of Bernardo Silva from Monaco.

Sanchez had joined Arsenal from FC Barcelona in 2014 for a fee of about £35 million and won the FA Cup for the second time last season.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had said few weeks ago that Sanchez would “respect” his decision and stay.

The Chilean made his first appearance of the season in the Gunners’ 0-4 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday, coming off for Alexandre Lacazette after 62 minutes.(NAN)

  • Sanchez, Ozil rescue lacklustre Arsenal at Middlesbrough

Sanchez, Ozil rescue lacklustre Arsenal at Middlesbrough

Two goals from Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil were enough to rescue a win for Arsenal away at Middlesbrough, keeping alive the Gunners’ hopes of finishing in the top four

Arsenal started the game 10 points adrift of fourth place, and Middlesbrough were six points away from climbing out of the relegation zone.

Arsene Wenger started the match with three at the back, giving Rob Holding a rare start. While neither side impressed in the first half, Sanchez curled in a fine free-kick past a static Brad Guzan.

In the second half, Alvaro Negredo equalised for the home side, and with 20 minutes of normal time left, Ozil won it with a low shot from close range.

With the victory, Arsenal move into sixth on goals scored, while ‘Boro now look doomed in their attempts to stay up. Arsenal’s post match celebrations betrayed their relief after a difficult period.

    TALKING POINT

Has Arsene Wenger tinkered too late? A drop to three at the back is hardly rocket science, but putting three central defenders helps to shore up a weak central defence, and gives more bodies in the middle of the park too. It certainly helped the side to play their three best attacking players, and gave Oxlade-Chamberlain and Nacho Monreal the chance to assist in attack and defence. It wasn’t a great performance, but it was far better than it has been.

    MAN OF THE MATCH

Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough): While he ended up on the losing side, Downing was ‘Boro’s most threatening player, and the most dangerous player on the pitch. His deft cross into the box for Negredo created a goal, and had he seen more of the ball he could have given Arsenal’s new-look defence a tougher time.

    KEY EVENTS

37′ – RAMSEY FOUL – Ramsey should be off. He goes in late, studs-up into Clayton’s shins. Because the contact isn’t thuddering, no real damage is done, and he isn’t even booked. Absolutely awful refereeing.

42′ – GOAL! ‘Boro 0-1 Arsenal. Sanchez scores – Sanchez arcs a free kick from the middle of the pitch, 25 yards out, into the top corner to Guzan’s right, the ‘keeper doesn’t move. A superb free kick.

50′ – GOAL! Middesbrough 1-1 Arsenal. Negredo scores – Downing breaks down the right wing, comes onto his left foot and clips an excellent ball into the box for Negredo to put it past Cech to equalise.

61′ – AYALA HEADER – Ayala meets a cross from Downing after it’s headed back across goal by Friend, and it’s cleared off the line after Cech falls backwards to beat it out.

63′ – GUZAN SAVE – Sanchez picks out Ozil with a measured through-ball, and as he sets himself to shoot, Guzan rushes out to block the run and clear the ball.

71′ – GOAL! ‘Boro 1-2 Arsenal. Ozil scores – Sanchez floats a ball into the box gently, Ramsey deftly chests it into the path of Ozil, who whallops a shot low into the near corner.

  • Sanchez hands victory to Arsenal

    Sanchez hands victory to Arsenal

TWO goals from Alexis Sanchez, one of which was scored with his hand, earned Arsenal a workmanlike 2-0 win at the Emirates which halted their run of two successive Premier League defeats and lifted them to third in the table.

But the result was far from convincing and did little to settle the debate over Arsene Wenger’s future after days of uncertainty about whether he will remain in charge next season.

The manager completed his four-match touchline ban by watching from the stands and was delighted to see Sahchez pop up on the line for the opener on 34 minutes. But the goal was controversial, with the ball going in inadvertently off the Chilean’s hand after popping up from a goalline save by Hull keeper Eldin Jakupovic.

Oumar Niasse twice went close for an enterprising Hull side, who had Sam Clucas sent off for conceding the injury-time penalty from which Sanchez scored his 17th league goal – and fourth against Hull – this season.

  • Sanchez impersonates Rocky

    Sanchez impersonates Rocky

Would Alexis Sanchez be a good option to take the lead role in a potential remake of Rocky? He certainly thinks so.

The Chile international has been training hard during the Copa America campaign in USA and was filmed running alongside a road and shaking hands with supporters.

The Arsenal attacker finished off his hard work with an homage to the iconic film starring Sylvester Stallone, as he ran up the Art Museum steps in Philadelphia and showed off his boxing moves.

Meanwhile, England goalkeeper Tom Heaton showed he can rival Joe Hart for his place in goal for England with some fabulous saves in training.

And Sergio Ramos showed just how sound his control and touch are with some impressive keep-ups as Spain prepare for their next fixture.

  • Barcelona confirms offers for Sanchez

    Barcelona confirms offers for Sanchez

The Chile star is a target for Arsene Wenger, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool also monitoring the situation, while Xavi’s future is also in doubt.

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has confirmed the club have received offers for Arsenal target Alexis Sanchez.

Goal exclusively revealed on Saturday that Arsene Wenger was lining up a £32 million bid for the Chile star following talks with a mystery forward in May.

Manchester City have since joined the race for Sanchez’s signature – with Manchester United and Liverpool also linked – and Zubizarreta is keen to find the “best solution” ahead of an expected sale.

“Regarding Alexis, there have been offers. We will try and find a solution best for everyone,” Zubizarreta told reporters.

Elsewhere, a host of clubs have been linked with a move for Xavi and the arrival of Ivan Rakitic from Sevilla has raised more questions over the playmaker’s future.

Speaking at a press conference to introduce Rakitic as a Barca player, Zubizarreta revealed that he does not know whether Xavi will prolong his stay at the club and plans to hold talks with the midfielder.

“We are talking permanently with Xavi, we spoke to him before he went to the World Cup. He also wants the time to think, that’s Xavi Hernandez, he’s got every right to analyse things as he wants to do,” Zubizarreta said.

“He’s our player, when he comes back from his holidays we’ll sit down and we’ll talk again. Any news he gives us will be good.

“If he decides to stay that will be fantastic news, if he decides that it might be the time to retire then we will treat that as well as we can.

“We are not talking any old player, we’re talking about somebody who is very special. We’ve been very open with Xavi in our conversations recently, we’ve been very transparent about things.

“If Xavi stays here he’ll be competing with others for a place in the team, but if Xavi decides to explore other options we will respect that”.
