Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho has joined Chelsea on an initial loan deal that will turn into a permanent transfer next summer for around €30 million.

This marks a significant reduction from United’s earlier valuation of €40-50 million.

Sancho, 24, has been eager to leave Old Trafford after struggling to find a place under manager Erik ten Hag.

Last September, he publicly criticised Ten Hag over comments about his training, and despite efforts to mend relations earlier this summer, Sancho has not appeared in any of United’s Premier League games.

Interest in Sancho was high with Juventus and Chelsea pursuing the former €85 million signing. Ultimately, Chelsea secured the deal, which includes an obligation to purchase.

The key question now is whether Sancho can rejuvenate his career at Chelsea or if his recent decline will persist.

Manchester United and England winger Jadon Sancho has rejoined former club Borussia Dortmund on loan for the rest of the 2023-24 season.

The 23-year-old moved to Old Trafford in a £73m deal from German club Dortmund in July 2021.

He has not played for United since 26 August after falling out with manager Erik ten Hag and has been training away from the first team since September.

The loan contract contains no option to buy.

“When I came into the dressing room today, it felt like ‘coming home’,” Sancho said.

“I know the club inside and out, I’ve always been very close with the fans here, and I’ve never lost contact with those in charge.

“I can’t wait to see my team-mates again, go out on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, prepare goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League.”

Man Utd winger Jadon Sancho will train away from the first team until issues with manager Erik ten Hag are resolved.

Ten Hag left Sancho out of his squad for the loss at Arsenal earlier this month, saying the winger’s training performances had been below standard.

Sancho, 23, rejected the Dutchman’s reasoning and claimed he had been “a scapegoat for a long time”.

United said in a statement Sancho would be on a “personal training programme away from the first team”.

The statement added that the decision was made “pending resolution of a squad discipline issue.”

The news comes in a week where another United forward, Antony, also stepped away from first-team duties amid domestic abuse allegations made by his former partner.

Sancho moved to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in 2021.

But he has struggled for consistent form since making the switch, and has scored only nine goals and provided just six assists in his 58 Premier League appearances.

Last season Sancho spent three months battling physical and mental issues, with Ten Hag at one point saying the England international was not fit enough to play.

He returned to action in the EFL Cup semi-final win against Nottingham Forest on 1 February and a week later sparked a comeback against Leeds United in the Premier League, scoring the equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

Ten Hag spoke of his pride in “magnificent” Sancho in the aftermath, but Sancho’s involvement has lessened since then.

He has made three substitute appearances this season with United winning two and losing two of their opening four Premier League fixtures.
