  • You may be sanctioned, Ondo APC elders tell Olanusi, others

The Chairman of the Elders Caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Senator Nimbe Farukanmi, has warned that former Deputy Governor Alli Olanusi and his group could be sanctioned if they do not desist from seeming anti-party activities.

He wondered why an elder like Olanusi assembled aggrieved party members to propagate falsehood because he could not have his way with Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

Farukanmi said the recent call by the Olanusi-led group was a wicked device to further cause disaffection and damage to the party.

He said: “It is unfortunate that Alhaji Olanusi and his group decided to revert to fanning the embers of disunity with outright lies and a wicked call for the dissolution of the state executive of the party at a time APC is talking about reconciliation.

“You will recall that most of the people in that group did not work for the APC during the last governorship election, yet the party won. It is, therefore, funny to hear them say that they control over 80 per cent of the party’s strength in Ondo State.”

He advised members of the estranged group to retrace their steps and work with the reconciliation committee set up by APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) to air whatever grievances they have against the party.

He affirmed the confidence and belief of the Ondo State APC in the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Executive Committee (NEC), led by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the state by Governor Akeredolu.

  • Traffic offenders to be sanctioned

Traffic offenders are in for a rough ride in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) judging from pronouncements from the Administration.

FCTA has also threatened to sanction motorists who indiscriminately park their vehicles on walkways and other unauthorised places.

FCT Permanent Secretary, Mr. John Chukwu, an engineer, said this in Abuja at the first anniversary of the Abuja Computerised Vehicle testing services.

Deputy Director and Chief Press Secretary FCT, Muhammad Sule made this known in a press statement, i which he stated that the Permanent Secretary had appealed to all Abuja road users to obey traffic rules and road signs to avoid crashes.

He also stated, “The Permanent Secretary further threatened that parking on walkways and other unauthorised places would not be taken lightly as appropriate sanctions would also be applied.

“Engr. Chukwu used the occasion to appeal to all road users in the Federal Capital Territory to obey traffic rules and road signs to ensure safety on Abuja roads.

“He identified three major causes of road crashes, which according to him include the state of the road, the attitude of the driver and more importantly the state of the vehicle.

“Where the state of the vehicle is largely compromised, the resultant effect can better be imagined and therefore every effort must not be spared to keep vehicles plying FCT roads Roadworthy.

“The Permanent Secretary thus, instructed the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services to synergise with the operators of the Testing Centre to ensure that all vehicles in the Territory are subjected to the clinical diagnosis of the Centre before roadworthiness certificates are issued to the owners.

“In order to reduce the effect of the high rate of road fatalities occasioned by the prevalence of unworthy vehicles, Engr. Chukwu directed the Directorate of Road Traffic Services to replicate Vehicle Testing Service Centres in all the six Area Councils of the Territory.

“He reiterated that the establishment of the Testing Centre in the six Area Councils would provide easy access to motoring public in and around the Satellite Towns to get their vehicles tested.ý”

  • Currency transactions: Erring firms to be sanctioned

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has warned of severe sanctions against insurance firms that fail to report currency transactions of their customers.

Its Director, Mrs Juliet Ibekaku, made this known at the National InsuranceCommission (NAICOM)Sensitisation Programme on Anti-Money Laundering and Combat of Financing of Terrorism Control Measures for Insurance Companies in Lagos.

She noted that the NFIU’s end-of- year reports showed that only 3,871 Currency Transactions Reports (CTRs) were submitted by insurance companies last year. she added that the Unit would not hesitate to sanction some firms.

Mrs. Ibekaku said failure to file currency transaction reports and Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs) is a criminal offence.

She said: “The NFIU would like to reiterate that failure to file CTRs and STRs is a criminal offence which the NFIU will enforce working closely with its counterpart in the law enforcement agencies and NAICOM.

“The responsibility to take specific and timely action to prevent the financial system from reputational and legal risks rests mainly with the insurance companies in the first instance because of the nature of the services and products they offer to their customers and because of the type of clientele they serve.”

She said the NFIU and NAICOM intends to issue further guidance on some of the emerging issues that have been observed, adding that the anti-money laundering law, mandates financial institutions to report transactions, lodgments or transfer of funds over N5 million or N1 million by an individual and N10 million or N5 million by a corporate entity to the NFIU.

Deputy Director, Inspectorate, NAICOM, Emmanuel Farinu, said efforts were being made by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), to review jurisdictions globally to identify areas that pose risk to international financial system and determe the extent of compliance with anti-money laundering and combating financing of terrorism requirements.

Assistant Director, Inspectorate NAICOM, Sam Onyeka, said the Commission has put in place measures that would enable operators to have a harmonised CTRs and STRs reporting system.

She said: “I am a bit disappointed that the condolence visit is coming five months after the incident and it’s like opening old wounds. We thought this meeting was to bring us abreast on the investigation.

“Some arrests were made by the police and we thought that by now, the result of the investigation would have been made open. Rather, we are being kept in the dark. I am aware that the investigation is over and the report has been submitted.”
