Lagos State Government has issued 14-day removal notice to owners of buildings and structures on drainage channels at Sangotedo, Lekki and Okota-Isolo.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab gave the notice at the weekend after an inspection tour to contravention sites and ongoing drainage enforcement projects at Ago Palace Way, Isolo, Sangotedo, Lekki and Ikoyi areas of the state.

He said government remained resolute in its quest to make the metropolis flood-free.

“The era of environmental indiscipline and nuisance is over in Lagos. We will not shy away from enforcing relevant laws irrespective of whose ox is gored,” Wahab said.

The commissioner said the team was on routine check to ascertain the state of some drainage channels and ensure compliance with setbacks and alignments, knowing that most flooding issues were caused by detrimental human activities.

Areas visited include Isolo, Ikoyi, Lekki, among others. The commissioner was accompanied by top officials of the ministry and other heads of agencies under the ministry.

The team visited Aladelola Street in Ikosi-Ketu, where a channel had collapsed because the supporting iron under the culvert had cut. The commissioner said the public works office would cordon off the road and repairs would begin immediately.

At Victory Estate collector on Ago Palace Way, Okota, where unscrupulous elements had blocked water path and canals, engaging in illegal sand filling and selling, Wahab said an enforcement team was sent earlier to check the status.

“We are here following a written petition by residents over distortion to the canal and roads by individuals, which has been causing flooding.” he said.

At Sangotedo, by Lagos Business School (LBS), the commissioner said there is a natural stream that is supposed to discharge into System 63 and from there to Omu creek, which has been blocked and reduced by illegal structures built along the channel, adding that 48 hours contravention notice have been served to owners of buildings lying within the channels.

  • Save us from demolitions, Sangotedo residents cry out

Save us from demolitions, Sangotedo residents cry out

Residents of Sangotedo Town, Eti-Osa East Local Government Development Area of Lagos State, have cried out to the state government over the demolition of their properties.

The Olufunmi Eshilokun Royal Family of Sangotedo Town, which raised the alarm, said the demolitions by Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) were being done despite a pending court case initiated by Percio Property Company.

The Olu of Sangotedo Kingdom, Oba Mohammad Akorede, sought the urgent intervention of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to forestall total economic ruins, destruction and demolitions of their properties.

LABSCA had asserted that prior notice of the demolition was served to the residents, citing non-approval of building plans as justification.

But, Oba Akorede, in a statement by Prince Halidu Olufunmi, Head and Olori-Ebi of the Olufunmi Eshilokun Royal Family, said they were the valid owners of the land and that no contravention notices were served on them.

He said many families have been forcefully displaced without being allowed to take their belongings, and their protestations have been “met with threats”.

“LASBCA invaded our land, claimed to be demolishing buildings and structures without no building permits and approvals, without service of contravention notices as provided for by its law and government regulations,” the monarch said.

According to him, the Olufunmi Eshilokun Royal family is the owner and overlord of a large parcel of land at Sangotedo Town in the Eti-Osa East LCDA, part of which it sold and granted to their privies and tenants.

The statement reads: “The family became owners by the fact that the town was first settled on and founded by their Progenitor Prince Olufunmi, the second child of Oba Esilokun, the fourth Oba of Lagos while looking for his legendary senior brother Oba Kosoko, who left Lagos during the Obaship crisis and civil war that broke in Lagos between him and his uncle Oba Akitoye.

“The fact that Prince Olufunmi was the first settler in Sangotedo and that his descendants, the OlufunmiEsilokun Royal family ownership of the adjoining and large parcel of Land at Sngotedo Town, is confirmed amongst others by the judgment of Justice E. Ajao-Oshodi in suit No. Ld/328/76 Alhaja Barakat Olufunmi & Ors. V Yakubu Olufunmi & Anor.

“Sometimes in 2021, a company Percio Property Company Limited instituted suit No. LD/10877LMW/2021 V Alhaji Musiliu Abidemi Onikoyi & Ors., against our family and other families from Egan Anidu, Oko-Eledu, the Lagos State Government and other agencies of the state government, claiming to have been allocated large parcel of land measuring 67.001 hectares.

“This bogus claim includes the Olopa Metta Village excision excised to the Olufunmi family, by the Lagos State Government excision, measuring an area of 10.035 hectares of land.

“The land is covered by Survey Plan No. LS/D/LA3487, tracing No. LS/T/LA3487 signed by Beyioku O.W Surveyor Grade 1, on 11/7/2014, counter-signed by O.A Sangowawa, Govt Surveyor on 11/7/2014 and Signed by Joseph Agbenla, the Surveyor-General of Lagos State on 27/2/2015.

“These areas of land are in the possession of the family, part of which has been granted and allocated to some family members, who have constructed property on the land and other parts of which the family in the exercise of the family ownership rights have sold and granted to their privies and tenants, respectively.”
