  • Group to Sanwo-Olu: Resist Lagos water sector privatisation pressure

Group to Sanwo-Olu: Resist Lagos water sector privatisation pressure

The Lagos State government has been urged to keep the Adiyan II Water Treatment Plant and the water sector under public control rather than handing them over to private profiteers.

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) commended the government’s commitment to public health but warned that privatization could undermine the significant investments made in clean water initiatives, especially in critical infrastructure like the Adiyan II plant.

CAPPA highlighted the 12-year progress of the project as evidence that State-led, funded initiatives are the optimal way to expand public water supply and achieve universal access to clean, safe, and affordable water for Lagosians.

It noted that following Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s recent visit, the Adiyan II facility is now 80% complete and on track for a 2027 finish, adding that the State government has earmarked an extra ₦20 billion in its 2025 fiscal budget to clear the project’s outstanding liabilities.

Against this backdrop, in a statement on Sunday by the group’s Media and Communications Officer, Robert Egbe, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, urged the government to resist ceding control of the sector to profiteers.

‘We strongly urge the Lagos State Government to resist any temptation to privatize or concession the Adiyan II project and other water treatment facilities across the State. Water is not a commodity to be sold to the highest bidder.

“If Adiyan II or any other public water facility is handed over to private corporations, Lagosians will suffer higher tariffs, restricted access, and corporate exploitation,” he stressed.

To support the Non-Governmental Organization’s (NGO) stance, Oluwafemi highlighted failed privatization experiments across Africa, where foreign-backed water projects faltered due to soaring costs, contract failures, and profit-driven policies that deprived millions of access to clean water.

He pointed to the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) recent withdrawal from Lagos’ water sector as a critical lesson, underscoring the risks of relying on external, commercial interests.

He said: “What is happening with USAID is a textbook example of why governments should never outsource critical infrastructure to external financiers with hidden agendas.

“The Lagos State Government must recognize this as a blessing in disguise and take full control of its water sector rather than leaving it vulnerable to shifting donor priorities, where financial commitments are subject to geopolitical agendas, austerity measures, and changing domestic policies in donor countries, all of which can leave both governments and communities stranded”.

CAPPA noted that under the 2021 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Lagos State and USAID, no fewer than five mini waterworks were slated for rehabilitation with private sector involvement as a key component.

However, it said the withdrawal of USAID’s funding has called for an urgent review of the future of Lagos’ water infrastructure, considering that the Lagos Water Corporation is looking to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) for support.

It expressed concerns over the financial strings attached to such partnerships, warning that those institutions often impose stringent conditions that could lead to higher water tariffs and reduced public control.

It also pointed out that AFD’s close ties to private corporations, particularly Suez, have further fueled fears of creeping privatization.

Despite these challenges, however, CAPPA urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to see USAID’s exit as an opportunity to strengthen public ownership of water resources.

According to the group, relying on State funding rather than external financiers with commercial interests would ensure long-term sustainability and protect residents from exploitative policies.

This moment, CAPPA insisted, presents Lagos with a chance to lead Africa’s fight for water justice by prioritizing public welfare over corporate profits.

“The State must invest in the Lagos Water Corporation and the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources to enhance their operational efficiency and ensure transparency in the sector rather than handing over control to foreign profiteers.

“The decisions made today will determine whether water remains a public good accessible to all Lagosians, or whether it becomes a luxury available only to those who can afford it.

“CAPPA urged Lagosians to remain vigilant and demand that their government prioritize people over profit,” Oluwafemi said.

Sanwo-Olu unveils Lagos first medical syringe manufacturing plant

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated the state’s first medical syringe manufacturing facility, O-Care Disposable Syringes, to boost local production and reduce dependence on imports.

Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, reiterated his administration’s commitment to industrialisation and economic growth through strategic investments in infrastructure, power supply, and policy reforms.

The facility, established by Transgreen Nigeria Limited at Odofin Park Estate, Ijesha, Apapa-Oshodi, Lagos, has a daily production capacity of 750,000 syringes, ensuring a steady supply of essential healthcare products while strengthening Nigeria’s medical sector.

“Our administration remains committed to creating an enabling environment for businesses like Transgreen Nigeria Limited to thrive. Through strategic investments in infrastructure, power supply, and policy reforms, we will continue to support initiatives that drive industrialization and economic growth,” the governor said.

He highlighted that the factory aligns with Lagos’ vision of industrialisation, economic growth, and improved healthcare access.

“The establishment of this factory demonstrates the power of collaboration between the government and private sector in addressing critical gaps in the healthcare system,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He emphasised that local production of medical supplies would create jobs, boost economic diversification, and support the state’s 2025 ‘Budget of Sustainability.’

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Transgreen Nigeria Limited for its vision and dedication in establishing the state-of-the-art factory, stating that the O-Care syringes were designed with safety and environmental sustainability in mind, qualities that reflected the highest standards of medical manufacturing.

According to him, these syringes will not only serve the needs of Nigerians but will also position Lagos as a hub for medical innovation in Africa.

Transgreen Nigeria Ltd. Managing Director, Cyprian Orakpo pledged to expand operations and broaden the range of medical products manufactured.

Orakpo noted that manufacturing companies in Nigeria come with numerous hurdles, including access to capital, prohibitive cost of power, multiple taxes from different government agencies which he said complicated the landscape for businesses.

According to him, the infrastructure, from roads to power, has been a significant obstacle, but quickly affirmed that notwithstanding all these challenges, Transgreen Nigeria Limited remained committed to its mission of elevating healthcare everywhere, adding that the story of the company was a testament to the power of resilience, innovation, and deep belief in the potential of “Made in Nigeria Products.”

However, he called for government intervention in addressing challenges faced by local manufacturers, including high power costs, infrastructure deficiencies, and illegal tolls affecting business operations.

Orakpo urged authorities, including the Minister of Health and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), to enforce the Executive Order 2024 on Health to support local manufacturers.

The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu lauded the initiative as a vital contribution to the state’s THEMES agenda.

She emphasised that the factory would enhance healthcare security by ensuring the availability of high-quality, locally produced syringes, reducing dependency on imports that are often costly or unreliable.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu noted that healthcare remains a cornerstone of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s developmental agenda for a Greater Lagos, adding that the governor had made significant strides in revitalizing and repositioning the healthcare sector for efficient service delivery.

She assured that her office remains committed to complementing government’s efforts through intervention programmes that support vulnerable women, youths, and children, and ensuring that no one was left behind.

Director General, National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Moji Adeyeye, who was represented by Director of Vaccines, Biologics and Medical Devices Registration and Regulatory Affairs Directorate, Khadijah Ade-Abolade, a Pharmacist, stated that the product of O-Care Disposable Syringes was officially recognized by the Agency, ensuring that it adhered to international standards of excellence.

“At NAFDAC, we understand the critical importance of manufacturing high-quality medical devices locally.

“The approval of O-Care Disposable Syringes is a reflection of the diligent work and dedication that we, as the regulatory authority, invest in ensuring that only safe and effective products reach the market.”

“I am proud to say that O-Care syringes meet all the regulatory requirements for safety, quality, and good performance. This product is officially recognized by NAFDAC, ensuring that it adheres to international standards of excellence,” she said.

Sanwo-Olu’s wife seeks collective action against moral decadence

The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has called on religious institutions to unite against the ‘escalating’ moral decadence in the country.

Speaking at the Fatima Charity Foundation (FCF)’s Multi-Faith Prayer Session and Ramadan Lecture held in Surulere, she stressed the need for a multi-faceted approach to restore moral values.

The first lady who was represented by Islamiyyat Badmus, urged families, religious institutions, educational bodies, and government agencies to join forces in instilling values of honesty, hard work, respect, and accountability, particularly in young people.

Addressing the theme of the lecture, “Moral Decadence & Its Socio-Economic Implications on the Nigerian Society,” Dr. Sanwo-Olu warned that a society lacking strong moral values faces the dangers of corruption, indiscipline, crime, and social unrest, all of which hinder economic growth and national prosperity.

She said: “The theme is both timely and thought-provoking. A society that lacks strong moral values faces the dangers of corruption, indiscipline, crime, and social unrest—factors that hinder economic growth, stability, and national prosperity.

“In Lagos and across Nigeria, we see worrying trends such as youth restiveness, drug abuse, internet fraud, and violence. However, we must recognize that moral decline is not irreversible. It requires a collective effort—from families, religious institutions, educational bodies, and government agencies—to instill values of honesty, hard work, respect, and accountability in our young ones.”

She lauded the “critical role” of faith-based organisations, specifically highlighting the Fatima Charity Foundation’s dedication to fostering peace, moral rejuvenation, and social cohesion through prayer, lectures, and empowerment initiatives.

“When properly harnessed, religion serves as a powerful tool for unity, social harmony, and economic progress,” she added.

The first lady reiterated the Lagos State government’s commitment to fostering religious harmony and promoting initiatives that bolster moral and spiritual development.

“Nigeria is often described as a deeply religious nation. However, beyond professing faith, we must live out the true values of our beliefs by promoting honesty, accountability, and selfless service. In Lagos State, our government remains committed to ensuring freedom of worship and religious harmony. We continue to support initiatives that promote moral and spiritual growth, recognizing that a society built on strong values will experience peace, progress, and prosperity.

“As we observe this sacred period of Ramadan and Lent, let us seize this opportunity to reflect, renew our faith, and realign our actions with divine teachings”, she added.

President of the Fatima Charity Foundation and Iyalode of Lagos, Chief Bintu-Fatima Tinubu, urged Nigerians to set aside their differences and embrace their common goal of a flourishing nation.

She stressed that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and called on all citizens to work together towards developing the country.

“Our diversity is not a weakness but strength. Whether Christian or Muslim, rich or poor, young or old, we all share a common goal-to see Nigeria flourish. Therefore, let us set aside our differences and work collectively towards building a nation where justice, equity, and prosperity reign supreme.

“I implore every one of us to embrace peace, and cultivate a spirit of mutual respect. It is only through harmony that we can create an environment conducive to national growth and development. We must never underestimate the power of prayers. However, when religion is misused as a tool for division, it becomes a hindrance rather than a force for good,” she added.

The Iyalode of Lagos called for greater support and constructive engagement with the nation’s leaders, urging citizens to actively support their leaders through prayers and constructive dialogue.

She said: “Our leaders, from the president to governors, ministers, lawmakers, and council chairmen, require divine guidance to govern effectively. We must continue to intercede for them, asking Almighty God to grant them wisdom, integrity, and strength to deliver the dividends of democracy. As a nation, our responsibility extends beyond criticism; we must support our leaders through prayers and constructive engagement. “A thriving Nigeria is a collective effort, and through faith and good governance, we can make Nigeria great again.

Nigeria is a nation where faith plays a pivotal role in everyday life. We must ensure that religion is leveraged to promote unity, development, and good governance. By focusing on the shared principles that all religions advocate – peace, love, and service to humanity – we can create a more inclusive and progressive society.”

The guest speaker, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, speaking moral decadence in the country identified illiteracy as a major contributing factor.

He called on the government to prioritize education and bring illiteracy to the barest minimum.

He also attributed moral decadence to the fear of the unknown.

Ighodalo urged parents to monitor their children’s social media usage.

He stressed the importance of good governance and leadership in fostering a morally sound society.
