Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and former Works and Housing Minister Babatunde Fashola have urged students to move into the future with self-discipline and embrace technology to enhance their skills.

They noted that technology would open the doors of many possibilities for those who are favourably disposed to it.

The duo spoke yesterday at the 27th convocation lecture of the Lagos State University (LASU), titled: Embracing the Future: Navigating the Intersection of Technology and Humanity.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, advised the graduands to stay up-to-date with the latest technological advancements and imbibe hard work “as there is no shortcut to prosperity”.

He said: “The world has changed and young graduates must be ready as there is no shortcut to success. Human beings have never been more remunerated than today. If you know what people need, you can become rich.”

Reiterating the need for human readiness for emerging technology, Sanwo-Olu noted that technology allows consistency and builds a better life.

The governor said it also makes things easier as it continues to shape human lives, especially of future generations, in profound ways.

In his lecture, titled: Embracing the Future: Navigating the Intersection of Technology and Humanity, Fashola said humanity and human civilisation, as well as intrinsic values that have kept man at the apex of all things that exist in the world must be preserved, despite the prevalence of technology in today’s world.

The former minister said the students were graduating into a world of technology at a time talent is being rewarded at an unprecedented level.

He urged them to continuously educate themselves, formally and informally, and embrace self-discipline beyond skills and education.

Fashola noted that self-discipline would complete all the work their parents, guardians and lecturers have done “and will concretise and define their reputation”.

According to him, it will be the compass for their integrity and determine whether they are trustworthy.

Fashola added: “Partly, the education you have received here will take you someway on your journey but it will not be enough. You will require more things, including continuing education in the formal and informal way. Life becomes meaningless the day we stop learning. But over and beyond skills and education, you will require self-discipline.”

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, restated the institution’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance its service to make life better for its staff and students.

According to her, the institution has adopted hybrid teaching for general courses.

This, she said, allows students to receive lectures anywhere around the campus without being in crowded classrooms for courses with a large number of students.

Chairman of the occasion, Emeritus Prof. Peter Okebukola, said: “Humanity and technology intersect into each other because of the impacts on social values, morals, education and others.”

    Sanwo-Olu inaugurates 15 high-capacity passenger boats

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday inaugurated 15 new ferries to boost water transportation in the state and to mark his fifth year in office.

Sanwo-Olu, who launched the boats at the Badore Jetty in Ajah, described the ferries as ‘another demonstration of government’s commitment to transportation and traffic management, which is the first pillar of its THEMES + Agenda, and which is aimed at deepening intermodal transportation and boosting the economy.

The 40-seater-boats, called Omibus, are products of the partnership between the state government, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), and Caverton Marine, a subsidiary of Caverton Aviation. They were locally-produced, except for the outboard engines. The boats join the earlier 22, making a total of 37.

Sanwo-Olu said: “This anniversary couldn’t have been better celebrated as it symbolises our commitment to a comprehensive integrated urban mass transportation. Today is the turn of marine/water transportation, and we are handing over 15 of the 25 ferries which Caverton Marine was commissioned to build, to operators. The remaining 10 would be injected in the second phase.”

The governor added that a safe, reliable and secured water transportation would help decongest the road, improve productivity as it would drastically cut down travel time (the boat ride takes between 25 to 30 minutes from Falomo to Badore, and 15 minutes from Badore to Ibeshe, in Ikorodu, a distance of not less than one or two hours by road.

LASWA’s General Manager Emmanuel Damilola described the unveiling of the Nigerian-made modern ferries as a testament to the government’s dedication to developing water transport.

Damilola said the Omibus ferries are not just about adding more vessels, but about enhancing ‘our capacity to serve the growing number of commuters who rely on water transport daily’.

He added: “The ferries are equipped with revolutionary technology to ensure commuters’ safety, comfort, and convenience. They represent our commitment to sustainability, resilience and innovation, featuring co-friendly designs that minimize environmental impact.

Lagos workers deserve living wage, LP tells Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Chapter of Labour Party (LP) has appealed to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ensure a living wage for workers in the state.

The state Publicity Secretary of the party, Mrs Olubunmi Odesanya, made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

Odesanya, while assessing Sanwo-Olu as he marks the first anniversary in his second tenure, said the governor needed to step up his game to relieve residents of the current socio-economic challenges.

According to her, masses in the state including workers are struggling to survive and to meet their daily personal and family needs.

She urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to pity the workers in whatever it was proposing as the minimum wage.

Odesanya said the people, however, needed a living wage, which would take cognisance of the socio-economic indices for workers to be happy.

She said: “We are all watching in awe the minimum wage debacle.

“The current minimum wage of thirty thousand naira is due for review this year 2024, as we can recall, from the agreed and written Labour Law.

“Ordinarily, the review ought not create so much apprehension or furore but for the difficulties in the country.”

The LP chieftain said there was an urgent need for the Federal Government and the state government to give a living wage to the workers that “lay the golden egg”.

She said that the immediate removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government drove the prices of goods and services to a high level.

“In Nigeria today, there is no middle class anymore, you are either extremely poor or super rich.

“Inflation rate is high,” she said.

The LP spokesperson however, decried the current back and forth battle between the Federal Government and organised labour on the minimum wage.

“The government needs to propose a  minimum wage that takes cognisance of the current economic realities,” she said.

Odesanya added that the Federal Government should block wastages in government, stop corruption and cut down on the salaries of federal lawmakers.

NAN recalls that the organised labour on Tuesday walked out of the Tripartite Committee meeting on Minimum Wage after the federal government increased its offer to N60,000.

NAN also recalls that the government and the OPS had initially proposed ₦48,000 and ₦54,000 and N60,000, which were also rejected by the organised labour.

The organised labour had also presented ₦615,000 as the new minimum wage but saw reasons to drop their demand to ₦497,000 and then to ₦494,000. (NAN)
