Pray for Nigeria to overcome economic challenges, says Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has urged Muslims in the country to use the Ramadan Period to pray for the nation in order to overcome the present economic challenges.

The Governor made the call yesterday while speaking at the Annual Ramadan Lecture 1445AH/2024 of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Council held at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu who was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, added that at a time like this when the country is going through economic challenges and hardship, the citizens needs prayer to assist the leaders in taking the right decisions that will lead the country on the right path to national growth and economic recovery.

He emphasized that no one will seek elective post with the aim to fail but they are overwhelmed by various challenges and pressures of office.

The governor, therefore, stressed the need for prayers by Nigerians to assist the leaders in overcoming various obstacles and present economic challenges and hardship facing the country.

Sanwo-Olu said: “Nobody will contest for a position of authority with the intention to fail. They are overwhelmed with challenges and pressure of office. So, there is a need for us to use this period of Ramadan to pray to Allah to prevent them from derailing from their promises.”

Commenting on the present hardship in the country, Governor Sanwo-Olu enjoined Nigerians to be their brothers’ keeper during Ramadan and after.

He added that as government, his administration has initiated various programmes to ameliorate the hardship faced by citizens in the state.

According to him, “We have initiated the Lagos Food Market across the 57 Local Government Areas/Local Council Development Areas in the state, where citizens can get food items at discounted rates.”

He said food items like Rice, Beans, Bread, Garri, Eggs, Tomatoes, Pepper among others will be sold at 25 per cent discount to residents starting from today, (yesterday) at the designated areas across the state.

This, according to him, is the government ‘s way of bridging the huge cost of getting foodstuff.

He also disclosed that the state government has concluded plans to feed one million less privileged residents across the state free of charge using some selected “Mama Put Food Joints” across the state. Also, to attend to citizens medical needs, the state government through the six newly created Health Districts across the state will hold medical outreaches where citizens will be attended to and given free drugs particularly those with diseases like High Blood Pressure, Diabetes and others.

The governor urged citizens to take full advantage of all these initiatives by the government for their good and not to resell them.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman, Lagos State Council of Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Alhaji Abdur Rahman Olabode Salaudeen who was represented by the Vice Chairman, Dr Hassan Alao charged Muslims to take advantage of the month of Ramadan to observe all what Allah enjoined them to do and abstain from what Allah forbids as well extend hands of succor and assistance to the needy, poor and the less privileged around them.

He added that the society would continue to register its presence in the distribution of welfare packages in her bid to alleviate the sufferings faced by the less privileged in the society. He therefore charged all to be their brothers’ and sisters’ keeper in the face of the present economic situation and hardship.

The Chairman stressed that the society remains committed to making people see the beauty of Islam, revitalizing the high values the religion teaches and will  always embark on lots of life changing programmes and activities that will make Muslims and non-Muslims see Islam as a religion of peace, love and unity.

In his lecture, titled “What does He want from me”, the Guest Lecturer/National Missioner Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria and Overseas, Sheikh Abdur’Rahman Olanrewaju Ahmad said Ramadan is a month in which Muslims are expected to be increased in their worship and their efforts to get closer to Allah. He added that they are expected to be of more service to their fellow human beings. It is a period they are reminded of their duties to their God and fellow human beings.

He stated that what Allah wants from mankind, particularly Muslims is to be closer to Him, love Him and worship Him as well as do away with anything that Allah has warned them against.

Commenting on the present hardship in the country, the cleric said tough times don’t last forever only tough people do.

He urged Nigerians to be more conscious of Allah and be just to themselves as the issue is not peculiar to Nigeria, but a global phenomenon.

He said: “There is no need in hoarding money and in hoarding goods, in making life much more difficult for people. If something is meant for the people, give it to them. Allah will provide your own. Don’t misappropriate the resources that are meant to alleviate the suffering of the people. Don’t hoard goods, don’t profiteer, don’t make life more difficult for people.”

“This is not about the government, it is also about us, about individuals. It is not the government that runs most of the public transports. Don’t make it difficult for people. It is not the government that sells goods in the market. Don’t hoard, don’t make it difficult for the people. Government is not the landlord. Don’t make it difficult for people, make it easy for them and Allah will also make it easy for you.”

In their goodwill messages, the former Minister for Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, National President of the Ansar-Ud-Deen, Alhaji (Aare) Rafiu Ademola Sanni and the Chairman of the Occasion, AVM (Dr.) Sikiru Oladimeji Smith all urged Muslims to seize the opportunity of Ramadan to pray for Nigeria and remember and take care of the less-privileged in their communities particularly at this hard time, as the month of Ramadan is a month of giving.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has assured that his administration would continue to create an enabling environment that promotes fair competition, protectS consumer rights, and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises.

He said his administration would continue to protect consumers through the right policies and ensure a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.

The governor also called on manufacturers to have a conducive working relationship with consumers and join hands with the government in protecting the rights of consumers to create an economy that works for all.

Sanwo-Olu  said this on Friday during at a one-day conference and exhibition to commemorate this year’s World Consumer Rights Day with the Theme: “Fair And Responsible AI for Consumers.”

The event was held at Eko Hotels in Victoria Island on Friday, by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, (LASCOPA) to ensure a robust regulatory framework that protects consumers.

The governor promised that he would continue to bridge the gap between producers and consumers to foster good relationships, noting that the mutual understanding between both consumers and producers underscored the symbiotic and interdependent relationship that exists between the two entities within any economy.

He urged consumers and producers to promote an enduring partnership and collaboration rather than relationships that could impede sustainable growth and development in the economic value chain.

He said: “Consumers and producers are not adversaries but rather partners in a complex economic ecosystem.

“While consumers rely on producers to supply goods and services, producers depend on consumer demand to drive their businesses forward,” he said.

The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside former Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, and the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, together with other political figures, have emphasised the necessity of cooperation between the executive and legislative branches to ensure the tangible benefits of democracy reach all Nigerians.

Their sentiments were shared during the 18th Lagos State Executive and Legislative Parley, with the theme ‘Engaging All for Inclusive Governance: Hands on For A Greater Lagos Rising’, which took place yesterday at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island.

“The present challenges call for higher dedication. We must rise up with a sense of urgency to solve them. All of us need to work together, both the private and public sector, to ensure our people live.”

The governor added that his administration has embarked on initiatives such as fare rebates on all government-owned transport schemes, payment of over N70 billion pension liability, and creation of food hubs, among other programmes, to cushion the effect of economic hardship on Lagosians.

Fashola, on his part, urged political leaders ‘to make democracy work for our people’. He noted that people do not know why they vote in an election.

Fashola noted: “People don’t really understand we are there for them. Sometimes they don’t know what they are voting for. The big issue is how to put more money in the hands of the people.”

He added that for the government to show it has the people’s interest at heart, certain taxes and levies could be suspended for a few months while more money is put into projects such as the repair and construction of roads.

The former minister also suggested a meeting between the government and small business owners to find out what the government can do to keep them in business.

Obasa, who was represented by the House Majority Leader, Noheem Adams, said the parley signifies a deep commitment between the executive and legislature at building cordial relationships for the benefit of the state.

“It’s important for us as executive and legislature to meet our responsibility. We must recognise the power of unity. We should build bridges where there are divides to create resilient Lagos. Our differences are opportunities for growth,” Obasa said.

Special Adviser to the governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Abiodun Tajudeen, noted that the synergy between the executive and legislature stands as a pivotal force behind Lagos’s monumental achievements. He added that the purpose of the parley was to strengthen the bond further.

Sanwo-Olu takes youth empowerment a notch higher

Impressed by the commitment of Osawere Austin Dayo who serves at King’s College, Lagos to talent discovery and nurturing, the Lagos State Government appointed him as a youth ambassador for the state. Dayo, a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, became a viral sensation after a video of him dancing with his students at King’s College Lagos. The state Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende, on the instruction of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu appointed Osawere as Lagos State youth ambassador. CHINAKA OKORO reports

Ancient thinkers and philosophers have posited that one of the best ways to groom future leaders is to give them opportunities to take on new and challenging responsibilities that stretch their skills and potential. This, they say, could be through delegating to them everyday jobs and projects that require them to learn new things, work with different people or deal with complex or ambiguous situations.

This translates to imbuing in others leadership skills which, in turn, instills in others, probably, young ones the ability to influence and guide followers or members of an organisation, society or team. Leadership often is an attribute tied to a person’s title, seniority or ranking in a hierarchy.

This may have led leadership experts to postulate that leaders are faced with challenging situations every day because they have to respond to certain challenges of the time, even as they insist that leaders are either proactive or reactive.

In these circumstances, “a proactive leader anticipates challenges and has a plan for handling them while a reactive leader waits for challenges to arise and then struggles to overcome them. Proactive leaders are big picture thinkers in the sense that they spend the bulk of their time learning from the past and planning for the future, even as they rarely get bogged down in the nitty-gritty of the present.”

Another of the characteristics of proactive leaders, experts point out, is that “they value their teams and go to great lengths to ensure that they can count on the people around them. They recognise the importance of varying viewpoints and are open to new ideas. They aren’t afraid to ask for help when they need it because they respect the people they’re asking.

“The most important characteristic of any leader is trust. Proactive leaders trust their teams and, in turn, inspire loyalty. They don’t make promises they can’t keep, and when they make a mistake (which all leaders do), they own it.”

Another school of thought is of the view that “proactive leadership goes beyond telling people what to do. It’s about effective communication, building consensus, delegation, motivation, and influencing others to reach a common goal.”

The abovementioned could explain the level of magnanimity displayed by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and his Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende recently.

In an outstanding demonstration of proactive leadership and dedication to youth empowerment, the governor and his commissioner have acknowledged the remarkable contributions of a dedicated member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Osawere Austin Dayo, who serves at King’s College, Lagos.

The leadership of the state acknowledged Osawere’s activities in King’s College Lagos. Also, the visionary leadership of Governor Sanwo-Olu and the proactive actions by the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development to foster positive change and recognise outstanding youth initiatives were not unnoticed.

In his verified official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the commissioner said: “I was captivated by the trending video of a passionate corps member, Osawere Austin Dayo, serving at King’s College Lagos. I found myself drawn in by his commitment to nurturing talents despite the constraints of a minimum salary. Osawere went the extra mile to nurture the pupils’ talents through his dance skills, and preparing them for their upcoming inter-house sports programme was commendable.

“Moved by this online discourse, not only did I find myself drawn in, but also Mr Governor himself. I paid a visit to the college to support Osawere’s passion on the day of their inter-house programme.

“Observing the pupils enthusiastically partake in the dance alongside Osawere, I couldn’t help but be enveloped by the joy and happiness that permeated the atmosphere. It was evident that Osawere’s influence extended far beyond the dance floor, instilling in these pupils a deep sense of belonging and purpose.

In light of Osawere’s impact, I am honoured to bestow upon him the title of youth ambassador of the state, emblematic of our administration’s commitment to nurturing positive impact within our communities. This is in addition to the 1 million awarded to him by the KC Alumni as the best [Youth] Corper(sic) of the year…

“The experience at King’s College was nothing short of inspiring, underscoring the pivotal role of selfless service in shaping a brighter future for our youth. It’s moments like these that reaffirm our commitment as a government to nurturing talent and fostering a culture of excellence.”

It is noteworthy that despite financial constraints, Osawere’s commitment to nurturing the talents of students at King’s College, Lagos, has been commendable.

His innovative approach, including engaging students through dance sessions, has garnered widespread attention and appreciation. His dedication not only enhances the students’ physical activities but also boosts their morale and overall well-being; creating a positive learning environment.

    Commissioner’s support and recognition

Having established a connection as he was impressed by Osawere’s initiative, the commissioner personally attended the inter-house sports programme of King’s College, Lagos where Osawere and the students showcased their talents.

He immediately named Osawere a Lagos Youth Ambassador. Osaw ere also earned himself a reward of N1 million from the King’s College alumni association.

Such recognition not only validates Osawere’s efforts but also inspires other youth to actively engage in community development initiatives.

    Osawere meets Sanwo-Olu

The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Ogunlende arranged for a meeting between Governor Sanwo-Olu and Osawere. The governor engaged Osawere in a conversation and later directed immediate engagement and support for Osawere’s initiatives. This underscored the governor’s commitment to nurturing youth talents and initiatives. The governor’s interest in Osawere’s work further highlights the importance of recognising and nurturing initiatives at the grassroots.

Also, in a collaborative effort to integrate Osawere’s talents into the state’s education system, the Lagos Youth Commissioner, acting on Mr. Governor’s directive, facilitated a meeting with the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun.

Plans on how to leverage Osawere’s innovative approach to enriching educational experiences across Lagos State were discussed.

The meeting signifies a strategic approach to integrating grassroots initiatives into government policies, aimed at ensuring sustainable development in the education sector.

    Proactive leadership in action

The recognition and support extended to Osawere exemplify the proactive leadership style of Governor Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos Youth Commissioner.

By celebrating diligence, rewarding commitment and innovation and championing positivity amid challenges, they are setting a commanding example for the populace and inspiring a culture of excellence and innovation. This proactive approach to youth empowerment not only benefits individuals such as Osawere but also contributes to the overall socio-economic development of Lagos State.

    His appointment as youth ambassador

Impressed by the commitment of Osawere’s commitment to talent discovery and nurturing, the Lagos State Government appointed him as a youth ambassador for the state. Dayo, a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, became a viral sensation after a video of him dancing with his students at King’s College Lagos, where he is currently serving as his primary place of assignment, went viral.

The state Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Ogunlende announced Dayo’s appointment via his official X handle.

“This appointment serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement for young individuals everywhere, demonstrating that passion and dedication can, indeed, be recognised and rewarded, even in the most unexpected ways.

“Furthermore, it underscores the importance of looking beyond initial perceptions and supporting those who contribute positively to society, regardless of the unconventional paths they might take.

“As he embarks on his new role as a youth ambassador, his story will continue to inspire those around him, serving as a vivid example of how young individuals can make a difference in their communities,” the commissioner said.

Expressing his gratitude to the commissioner for the appointment in a response tweet Osawere said: “Thank you very much for coming through for me sir. It was like a dream when I received a call that the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development is coming to see me at King’s College, but the reality hit me when I truly saw him.”

The acknowledgement of Osawere’s efforts by Governor Sanwo-Olu and his youth commissioner underscores the government’s proactive approach to youth empowerment and talent recognition.

Through their visionary leadership and decisive actions, they are not only celebrating individual excellence but also fostering an environment conducive to youth development and societal progress.

Through dance, Osawere has not only enriched the lives of his students but has also become a symbol of youth empowerment.

His journey from ridicule to respect is a testament to the transformative power of passion, resilience and the impact of recognising and nurturing the potential within every individual.

The story of Osawere is a compelling reminder of the impact one person can have, inspiring not just the students he directly interacted with but also a broader audience that witnessed his journey from viral mockery to honour.
