Sanwo-Olu, Oyetola, others receive largest container-RORO ship in Lagos

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat; the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola; Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Bello Koko and the Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Bashir Jamoh were among dignitaries that received in Lagos yesterday, ‘MV Great Lagos’- the largest container-RORO ship ever to visit Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

MV Great Lagos, which is on its maiden call to Nigeria’s largest multipurpose roll-on-roll-off (RORO) terminal, the Port Terminal Multipurpose Limited (PTML) at the Tin Can Island Port Complex, Lagos, is owned by the Grimaldi Group.

In his address at a reception organised to celebrate the maiden call of the ship, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the visit of the MV Great Lagos to Tin-Can Island Port is an expression of confidence of the international community in Nigeria.

He also commended the Grimaldi Group for its investment in Lagos State.

In his address, the Minister for Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministy, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, said the successful berthing of the vessel testifies to the dedication of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and PTML to enhance efficiency at the port.

The Minister commended Grimaldi Group and PTML for deploying the vessel to Nigeria and for adding value to the Nigerian economy.

In his welcome address, the Managing Director of PTML, Mr. Ascanio Russo, said the new ultramodern megaship is a marvel of modern engineering and environmental consciousness, stretching 290 meters in length with a beam of 38 meters and deadweight of over 45,000 tonnes.

The ship, he said, has capacity to transport 4.7 kilometres of rolling freight, 2,500 Car Equivalent Units (CEUs), and 2,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).

He said MV GREAT LAGOS is the second of the G5-class of ships recently launched by the Grimaldi Group and named after Nigeria’s commercial capital, which it has served for many decades.

“Today marks a significant milestone, not only for PTML and Grimaldi but for Lagos and Nigeria as a whole. We are gathered here on board this magnificent ship to celebrate the maiden call of the “Great Lagos”, a majestic vessel in the new G5 class of Ro/Ro multipurpose ships The naming of this vessel is not merely a coincidence; it is a deliberate and meaningful choice that reflects the deep and enduring connection between the Grimaldi Group and the port city of Lagos,” he said.

Russo said for more than six decades, the Grimaldi Group has been a cornerstone in the development of trade and maritime relations with Nigeria, a journey of mutual growth, understanding, and unwavering commitment.

“The arrival of the “Great Lagos” is not just an addition to our fleet but a reaffirmation of our devotion to the Nigerian economy and its vibrant economic capital. The “Great Lagos” is amongst the largest ships ever built in its class.

“This is not just an upgrade; it is a leap into the future of maritime transport and we are proud that we are witnessing this in Nigeria.

“But the greatness of the “Great Lagos” is not measured solely by her size or capacity. This vessel stands as a testament to our enthusiasm to achieve the minimum environmental impact. With technological advancements allowing for a reduction of CO2 emissions by up to 43% per ton transported, the “Great Lagos” is a beacon of sustainable maritime transport, setting new industry standards.

“At PTML, the port terminal which is hosting us now, we have always prided ourselves on being at the forefront of technological advancement and operational efficiency. Our terminal, the largest multipurpose terminal in Nigeria, stands as a clear demonstration of our ambitions. In the last one year alone, we have invested over USD20 million to upgrade our facilities to receive this beautiful ship.

“We have been extending our quay by over 40 meters while strengthening it to enable us to receive and operate a new Mobile Harbour Crane. All of this to accommodate the “Great Lagos.

“This investment underscores our strive to achieve operational excellence, while delivering efficient and cost effective logistics services to the broader Nigerian economy and its people. It reinforces our position as a key player in the maritime sector and confirms our readiness to take the port of Lagos on larger roles in the global trading community.

“Our efforts align seamlessly with the vision and support of the Nigerian authorities. I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to the Ministry of Transport, now the Ministry of the Blue Economy, and the Nigerian Port Authority for enabling the infrastructural work critical to today’s event. Our appreciation extends to NIMASA for ensuring the security of our waterways, the Nigerian Shippers Council for fostering a competitive environment conducive to enhanced port services, and Nigerian Customs for their dedication to facilitating trade while maintaining essential security functions. To the Lagos State Government, whose unwavering support has been instrumental in our massive infrastructure investments beyond the port area, I say a heartfelt thank you,” the PTML Managing Director said.

In his address, the Managing Director of NPA, Bello-Koko said, the arrival of the vessel “symbolises the fact that the Nigerian business environment is progressively getting better. With shipping volumes promising to get higher, forward looking investments such as the one we are gathered here to celebrate will certainly have a big impact in the long run. So I want to assure you that the Authority will continue to galvanize stakeholder efforts to continuously promote the ease of doing business all in a concerted bid to optimise the rich blue economy inherent in our maritime endowments.”

    Lagride investors appeal to Sanwo-Olu

An appeal has gone to the Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu over the take-over of LagRide vehicles from investors in the Ajah area of the state.

This was disclosed when the National President, Professional E-Hailing Drivers and Private Owners Association (PEDPA), Com. Idris Shonuga, met with journalists.

According to Shonuga, Mr, Tobi Lawal, the new Managing Director of ibile Holding Company, on Monday with some policemen took over about 21 numbers of LagRide vehicles from investors (partners) in the Ajah area of Lagos, who legally leased them from the Lagos State government on a four-year repayment plan.”

He said he was invited to the Ibile office by Mr. Lawal on that Monday, purportedly to discuss the operations of the business, but was told to return all the vehicles acquired through him by investors for the purpose of handing them over to drivers who will assume ownership of the vehicles which the investors had already invested over a N1million each.

Explaining the reason for the new move, Lawal, said he took the latest decision to correct some of the anomalies he discovered with the LagRide operations, especially the involvement of partners, which according to him was alien to the original plan of the government.

“the original idea for the creation of the LagRide scheme is to empower unemployed young graduates expected to acquire the vehicles for commercial transportation purposes, but the plan was abrogated with the introduction of the partners with the connivance of some Ibile Holding staff by fleet management companies, even when the design of the scheme did not factor in the use of fleet management companies.

“Whatever agreement that is existing hitherto between Ibile Holding Company in respect to the use of partners and investors is not binding as long as it is not signed by either the Managing Director or the Company Secretary, who are the authorising authorities. I have decided to retrieve those vehicles for handover to drivers,” he added.

Obasanjo, Jonathan, Sanwo-Olu, others hail Uzochukwu over luxury brand launch

African leaders and dignitaries from across the globe stormed the Lagos VI last Saturday for the grand opening of the most trended luxury brand ‘The Delborough Lagos’, as described by global tourists recently.

Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan as well as Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, took the lead in separate remarks to  describe the young Dr Stanley Uzochukwu, who owns the luxury brand, as a true model to young Nigerians, in particular, and Africans at large.

In his remarks during the commissioning on Saturday, Obasanjo said, “I don’t have anything to say other than to say, keep doing what you are doing.

“I heard the Governor of Lagos State saying that you’re working together. He is helping you and you are helping him and that’s what it should be – the private sector and public sector should work together for the development of the land. It shouldn’t be the other way round.

“God that has given you the ability, the resource, the enablement to put this up, will give you the ability and the enablement to build the one that is bigger and greater than this. Thank you very much.”

On his part, former President Jonathan said: “Stanley came to see me when I was a president. When he interacted with me on his vision, I told him: young man, with this your vision, I want to make young Nigerians billionaires and you should be one of them.

“Somehow, it’s like a vision and he carried on with it and today he invited me to be here to commission this luxury brand.

“Stanley, you have done well! I appreciate what you’re doing. You are a good example of what we want our young men and women to do.

“In short, the whole world today is controlled by very young people. The economy today is not the one that you have to use your muscle but your brain.

‘So if you think positively, you can become the richest person in the world today. The multi billionaires today in the world are below 40 and 45 years old.

“Stanley here is comfortable, providing jobs for people. He can move freely without looking at his back to see if police and even SSS is following him.

“So we plead with our young boys; the brain you have, your level of intelligence you have that is making you to go through dubious ways to make money, that same brain and level of intelligence can make you make money positively and you will leave in decent society happily.

“Please, I want young Nigerians to emulate Stanley Uzochukwu! We are here because he is clean and is doing well creating jobs for people but not bringing image problems to this country, he added.

Gov. Sanwo-Olu also corroborated the former Presidents, saying, “When Stanley and I met, not only the connection becomes instant, but Stanley is a young man that’s well brought up.

“We have a conversation that I was truly impressed with him – his humane, his humbleness, his clarity and his set of what he wants to achieve is fundamental and I want to believe that, indeed, if we want to begin to talk of role models in our country, Stanley is, indeed, a clear example of a Nigerian role model than all of us; giving the array of Nigerians that are here and giving the array of Nigerian Senior Citizens that are here to witness this event.

“You can see that they didn’t come because they just wanted to come and look at the beautiful brand, they came here because a young Nigerian is doing something that is unique, that’s great, that is elegant, that we all can identify with and it is a brand that we can all leave here and say that truly we are blessed in Nigeria.”

Notable Nigerians at the inauguration ceremony include a formal Senate President and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim; the Emir of Kano, HRH, Dr Aminu Ado Bayero; Igwe of Onitsha Kingdom and the chairman of the The Delborough Board, HRM Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe; Chief (Dr) Mike Ozekhome (SAN); Prof Lilian Orogbo.

Others were Olu of Warri,  His Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR, Senator Daisy Danjuma and other local and international dignitaries, too many to mention.

Ohanaeze to Sanwo-Olu: intervene in demolition of buildings in Lagos

The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has appealed to Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene in the ongoing demolition of structures in the state.

He appealed to the governor to suspend the demolition of buildings until “all the facts are cleared.”

Chief Iwuanyanwu appealed at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, November 30.

There had been an outcry by affected residents as the government undertook what it called a move to restore sanity.

The Lagos state government had pointed out that the affected structures were being demolished because they contravened the state’s laws.

The commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in the state, Tokunbo Wahab, had said more properties would be pulled down for contravening the drainage law.

Chief Nwuanyanwu said he would meet with the state governor over the demolition exercise.

He said: “It has been brought to my notice that many families have been thrown into serious difficulty due to the demolition in Lagos State.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo will establish an Ohanaeze Relief Agency to be controlled by top Igbo Leaders.

Ohaneze Ndigbo will through this Agency support Igbo citizens in distress; we will also support other Nigerians when the need arises in the spirit of brotherhood.

He added: “I have investigated what has happened in Lagos, and I appeal to the Government of Lagos State to intervene and ensure that justice is done. If anybody fails to obey the laws of the Land, the Igbo leadership will never support misconduct from any Igboman anywhere they live.

“I don’t have any doubt that there may be some instances where Igbo and perhaps other people whose property was demolished in Lagos did not fully comply with the laws of Lagos State. If any developer with impunity and without proper approval proceeds to develop a property anywhere in the world, he is taking a risk and his property stands the risk of being demolished.

“On the other hand, if the property is properly purchased, with approvals from the appropriate authority given before development, the individual deserves a happy and peaceful enjoyment of his assets. If any government demolishes the property built with the approval of the appropriate government department, such government by law must pay appropriate compensation for all the damages incurred to the owner of the building.

“I will attempt to see the Governor of Lagos State in the next few days. I will therefore appeal that the Governor of Lagos State kindly suspends the demolition of buildings until all the facts are cleared.”

The Ohanaeze leader also said he got reports of violation of building regulations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

“I have also got reports of violation of building regulations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. Because of the investment characteristics of Igbo, private properties and investments in Abuja are substantially owned by Igbos.

“I will advise my people the Igbo to ensure that they comply with all legislations and local regulations to avoid demolition of their properties in Abuja and other parts of Nigeria.”

Residents beg Sanwo-Olu to complete road

Residents of Akoka community in Bariga Local Council Development Area of Lagos State have appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to complete the rehabilitation of the long stretch of road that connects their community to other parts of the state.

The residents made this appeal during an inspection tour by the Lagos House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure headed by Desmond Elliot.

The Nation observed that the long stretch of St. Finbarrs’ College Road Akoka — a road leading to University of Lagos (UNILAG) from Bariga axis was partially rehabilitated, while some other parts are in a deplorable state.

The residents carried placards with inscriptions such as: “Save our soul in Akoka”, “What is our offence in Akoka”, “Akoka is totally neglected”, “We’ve been imprisoned in our own community”, “Our business is dying daily”, called for government attention “because the road has been abandoned for about three years.”

Elliot, who led a five-man delegation, said: “We’ve looked around and we are a bit disappointed with the pace of work. We’ve instructed the contractor that before anything, he should open up access routes, and also create a sort of palliative to make it passable.

“The Lagos State government has given a substantial amount to have gotten this job to 90 per cent. The contractor received 69 per cent and that means it should be accessible, but now cars are using one single lane, that’s not good enough. We will not rest on our oars in making sure we deliver on making life easier for people.”

The Chairman, Planning Committee for the St. Finbarrs Road abandonment project, Segun Adesanya and the Akoka CDA Chairman, Idowu Goriola, appealed to Governor Sanwo-Olu to hasten the completion of the road, to alleviate the sufferings of members of the community.

According to the residents, plying the road daily has subjected them to hardship and has equally affected their businesses.

A resident, Deaconess Showunmi, noted that if the road construction was completed, it would aid the economy of the community and help to decongest traffic.

She said: “They’ve been promising us they will start, up till now, they didn’t do anything. We want the government and the contractor to speed up the road completion”

Appealing to and assuring Akoka residents, Elliot said the Speaker of the Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has mandated the House Committee on Works and Infrastructure to begin oversight on all roads both ongoing and abandoned, with a view to assessing their conditions prior to the presentation of the year 2024 Appropriation Bill.
