Nigeria’s Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has hailed newly re-elected NFF President, Amaju Melvin Pinnick on his landslide victory in Katsina on Thursday, urging him to continue the improvement and development of the country’s football.

Saraki further urged Pinnick to ensure the country continues to win laurels at all levels as he takes another mantle of leadership for the next four years.

“Congratulations @PinnickAmaju on your re-election as President of @thenff. I wish you the very best as you continue to work towards improving the administration of the football federation and ensuring that Nigeria’s teams thrive at every level,” Saraki twitted.

Similarly, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio also landed the re-election of Pinnick, pledging his continuous support for the football federation.

“Congratulations @PinnickAmaju for your re-election as @thenff President. My commitment to the growth of Nigerian football is total. We started with building a good home for the @NGSuperEagles in Akwa Ibom and we will continue to support your administration to keep making us proud,” Akpabio posted.

  • Presidency to Buhari supporters: Ignore Saraki’s crude speeches

The Presidency on Thursday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari’s supporters to ignore the crude speeches coming from Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
Saraki is one of the Presidential aspirants under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, urged the Buhari supporters conduct themselves and put across their points of view in a decent language.
He said “The Presidency wishes to react the crude speeches hitting the news from Senator Bukola Saraki who recently joined the Peoples Democratic Party with the sole ambition of running as the president of Nigeria.
“In response the condemnable and extremely derogatory speeches by the PDP aspirant, we urge all Buhari supporters to display restraint in language and conduct and to always put across their points of view in a decent language.
“Throughout his political career, Senator Saraki has shown that he is a very dangerous person who can go any length to promote his personal interests.
“The language of his campaign is such that cannot be used against a domestic help.
“Is he just knowing that the President lacked vision? This is someone that the Senator had worked with very closely for more than three years. Amazingly, he never said all that he is now saying against him.
“Rather, his word for and on the President were always respectful and reassuring. That’s the man he called “My Father,” about him “there is no cause for alarm…a President who is healthy, witty and himself.” What then changed, all of a sudden?
“Is he saying these blatantly false and crude things against the President because he is gunning for the same office? Could it be that he is targeting President Buhari because the party he just joined does not have any real issues to highlight?
“Be that as it may, our appeal to our supporters is to ignore Saraki and any such politicians bent on lowering the quality of political discourse. Let them drown in their own waters.” he added
  • Only vibrant President can take Nigeria out of the woods – Saraki

The Senate President and presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bukola Saraki, has warned that Nigeria can not develop except with a vibrant, youthful and full-time President.

According to him, even developed democracies are now rushing for energetic, vibrant, focused and capable youthful leaders in order to have edge over other countries.

Saraki spoke on Monday night during his visit to the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum at the residence of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum leader, Chief Edwin Clark, in Asokoro, Abuja.

He expressed worries that Nigeria is presently dangerously disunited, lacks leadership capacity, with insensitivity and impunity as the order of the day.

He said “Where we are as a country today is too serious for us to take lightly. The Nigeria that we have today have never been so disunited. When you go to many parts of the country, people will tell you ‘Do I truly belong? Are we part of this country called Nigeria?

“On top of that, over a number of years, we have seen series of impunity. People are not held accountable. There is no inclusiveness in government. There is insensitivity and lack of empathy. These are big issues and unless we can unite a country, everything is…., development, creation of jobs.

“So the first thing that is key to us is how do we unite this country. What kind of President can unite this country? …..

“Lack of insensitivity, these are the issues that are driving suspicion, pulling us apart. Anything else we talk, development e.t.c can’t happen unless we bring everybody back.

“As such, he must somebody that can represent …, somebody in any part of the country can say ‘ I think he represents Nigeria’, ‘I think he will be fair to me whether I’m a Christian or Muslim’, ‘I think he will be fair to me whether I’m a northerner or southerner’. That gives us an opportunity of a platform to move forward.” he said

He added “Secondly, more importantly, I think what has been one of our major problem is capacity. I think over the years we have voted on sentiments. We have left capacity and ability, and used sentiments to decide who leads us. That is why we are where we are today.

“But we need Mr. President that has the capacity, that has the vision that can drive and perform.” he said

Without capacity on the part of the leadership, he said, that Nigeria cannot progress even though God has continued to be blessed the nation.

“There is no country that can provide for its people, take them out of poverty the way we are going about it.” he said

The Senate President also pointed out that the countries that are getting it right did not happen by chance or trial and error.

He said “The Asian tiger we talk about didn’t happen by chance, it didn’t happen by trial and error, it happened because they have visionary leaders, leaders that know where they want to take their countries to.

“As such, when looking for a president, he must be somebody that knows what it takes to do it. I say this all the time, you cannot give what you don’t have. I said it three years ago, I was harassed for it, when I said there are governments within government. There was no mistake about it. Governments are existing with no direction. And at such you must have a leader that understands.

“There is a new order in the world today. All over the world, they are now looking for vibrant leadership, youthful leadership. Even developed democracies are going there because it is not a part-time job, it is not an easy job. Today, the President of a country is a 24-hour job if you want to do it properly, especially in an environment where you want to reform a country. So you need youthfulness, you need energy, you need vibrancy.

“And most importantly, you need to be bold and courageous in order to take those decisions that need to be taken. And also to be focused. These are the qualities that are required.” he said

On the economy, he said that the government cannot do it alone without creating the environment for the private sector to flourish.

He said “Seventy percent of our population are young people. Government alone cannot take us there. Unless we have a private sector that is ten times bigger than what it is today, forget it young people will still be roaming around carrying their CV looking for jobs in government that will never come. It will never come because those jobs will never be there.

“The only way they will get jobs is when we have private sector that have ability to create jobs, and to create the investments that will make it happen. Two million barrels a day, with population growing at 3%, is not enough.
What you need to do is ensure other sectors, minerals, agriculture, are growing.

“As a governor, I came up and said you must have commercial farming. What I said over seven years ago is what is the blueprint today that the government is trying to adopt. When I said it then, I was attacked.
Today, the country is still spending N2 to N3 billion and it will continue to do so.” he said

He told the leaders that he has what it takes turn around the fortunes of the country.

Saraki said “If it is about the work, my leaders, I know I am very competent and I know what needs to be done to put this country on the right path.

“I have shown my experience, apart from my eight years and Chairman Nigeria Governors Forum, I have shown that ….make people work together. I have also shown that in the Senate in the last three years, which have 18 former governors, despite all the efforts of the government.

“I believe I have been able to show leadership and capacity. it’s okay for us to say we want to get rid of Mr. President. By getting rid of Mr President, we might not fix Nigeria. I don’t think we want to get rid of Mr. President without fixing Nigeria.

“So, we must find a candidate that must fix this country. I have the capacity that is required to turn this country around. This time around I believe we must go for capacity.” he stated

He also thanked the elders for the sacrifices they are making towards ensuring good leadership for the nation.

He said “Let me appreciate the sacrifices you are all making at this time because you would have thought that with the many years you have given to this country, that what you should be doing now is relaxing and thanking God for where the country is going.

“But you are concerned, patriotic and desired to leave a better Nigeria for your children and grand children.” he said

Speaking earlier, the President-General of Ohanaeze, Chief John Nwodo, gave reasons why the ground has extended invitations to all presidential aspirants in the forthcoming election.

He said “Our desire is to deepen democracy in the course of our exchange by presenting the aspirants a number of national issues we feel important and critical to enable our country survive.

“We have spoken to about four presidential aspirants.
We are anxious to know more about the candidates so that in our interactions with our people who are in the political parties we can better inform them of our dialogue with the various candidates, our judgement as to how they represent the aspirations of Nigerians.

“This elections is very important to Nigerians. For many Nigerians, if we get it wrong this time, we will be singing …. of our country.” he said.

  • Offa robbery: IGP directs service of summons on Saraki

INSPECTOR-GENERAL of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris has directed the court summons and other processes issued by a court in Abuja in relation to a criminal complaint brought against Senate President Bukola Saraki be served on him.

He detailed a unit in the Police Legal Department at the Force headquarters in Abuja to ensure the prompt delivery of the court processes on Saraki before October 3, the next date of hearing.

A lawyer, E. S. Marcus, disclosed this development yesterday at the resumed proceedings in a criminal complaint made against Dr. Saraki by an Abuja lawyer and rights activist, Oluwatosin Ojaomo, in relation to the ongoing investigation by the police into the April 5, 2018 bank robbery incident in Offa, Kwara State.

In the complaint marked: “CR/196/2018, filed under Section 89(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015”, Ojaomo argued that Saraki’s alleged refusal to honour an invitation allegedly sent to him by the police, in relation to the Offa robbery investigation, amounted to the offences of “obstructing a criminal investigation and disobeying a public officer carrying out a lawful responsibility.”

The judge handling the case at the Grade 1 Area Court, Aco Estate, Lugbe, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Justice Abdullahi Garuba Ogbede had on September 10 this year, ordered the issuance of the summons on the IGP following Saraki’s absence in court when the case, in which he (Saraki) is listed as the sole defendant, was called.

The judge had summoned the IGP to appear before his court on September 17 to show cause why Saraki was absent in court and what efforts he had made to ensure his appearance.

Marcus, who is Ojaomo’s lawyer, told the court yesterday that although the IGP and Saraki were absent in court, he was informed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the Legal Unit of the Nigeria Police Force, identified as Mahmoud that the IGP has directed a unit to ensure the delivery of all processes in relation to the case on Saraki.

He said: “The defendant is not in court. At the last date, the court issued a witness summons on the IGP to come and show cause why the police failed to effect service of the criminal summons, warrant of arrest and other processes on the defendant.

“The witness summons was served on the Nigeria Police Force by the court’s registry.

“However, we received a call from DSP Mahmoud of the Legal Department of the Nigeria Police Force headquarters, that the matter has been assigned by the IGP to a particular unit of the NPF to effect the service of the summons on the defendant and arrest him.”

Marcus urged the court to grant a short adjournment to enable the police effect service of the processes on the defendant.

Justice Ogbede acceded to Marcus’ request and adjourned the case to October 3.

The criminal complaint by Ojaomo reads: “Criminal complaint brought pursuant to Section 89(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015. Please, cause a summons for a direct criminal complaint on the defendant on the following terms:

“That you, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on or about the 24th day of July 2018 within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did refuse to honour the invitation of the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police Force to report at the police headquarters in FCT, Abuja to answer to  an allegation involving the investigation of  some criminal suspects involved in a case which the Nigeria Police Force is currently investigating, thereby obstructing a criminal investigation and disobeying a public officer carrying out a lawful  responsibility.

“You thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 136 and 149 of the Penal Code Law. Whereas, the complainant is praying the court to charge the defendant accordingly.”

Ordinarily, the service of the processes on Saraki ought to be effected by the complainant, but Marcus explained that when his client could not serve the defendant as ordered by the court, he applied, under Section 122 of the ACJA, to the IGP to help effect service on the defendant.

He said the IGP was required, under the law, to either produce the defendant in court or attend court to explain why the defendant was absent, a position that informed the court’s September 10 order on the IGP.

  • Saraki: Nigeria is at crossroads

Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday said the country was at “crossroads,” and “divided.”

Saraki spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when he visited the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) delegates in the state ahead of the party’s primary for the selection of presidential candidate.

Saraki said:“Today in Nigeria, we are at crossroads. The country is very divided.  We must unite the country and if we must unite the country,  we need a President who everybody will feel a sense of belonging.

“Today there is no sense of belonging for some parts of the country. We want a President that knows and represents Nigeria.

“We want a President that every part of the world know, yes because without unity there can never be progress after we unite, then we move to progress and development.

“Today, it is a new order all over the world in Asia, America and Europe. What are we seeing?  We are seeing people bringing in youthful, dynamic, energetic President and more importantly, digital President.

“A lot of our people are suffering; we can give what we don’t have?  We need a visionary leader.  We all talk about the Asian Tigers but they did not become Asian Tiger by luck or by chance.

“They became Asian Tigers because they had visionary leaders. It is time for us in Nigeria, not to vote with sentiments, but to vote for a man that is capable, that has the ability and that can perform.

“My dear delegates, today, out of the aspirants that have come out, I believe that my track records have shown that I have the capacity, ability and can stand for the right thing.

“When we talk about insecurity, sometimes it’s because there is no courageous leader to say this is right or  this is wrong,  this is unfair or that is fair.

  • Most Kwara politicians are transit, says Saraki

Senate President Bukola Saraki has described politicians in Kwara State as “transit politicians” who are only available during elections.

Saraki, who fielded questions from reporters in Minna, Niger State, after meeting with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delegates regarding claims that he was not grounded in the politics of his state, said these types of politicians make the loudest noise and claim to love the people most.

He said: “Anytime we go for election in Kwara State, the opposition always claim we are not on ground. They have been saying it for over 50 years; let them continue to say it.

“The interesting thing about politics in Kwara is that majority of these politicians are transit politicians; after election, they will go away and come back six months before another election, print a few posters, call reporters for interviews and say they are back. When the election is over, they go away again; that has always been their pattern.”

The senate president posited that Kwarans are not stupid; they are aware of these types of politicians, and will not fall for their tricks.

“I am convinced that my people in Kwara will not fall for their gimmicks. If you want to win election, come and serve the people, stay with them, and not wait till election time to suddenly say you love them more than we do.”

  • 2019: Time for N/Central zone to produce president, says Saraki

Dr Bukola Saraki, President of the Senate and presidential aspirant on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform, says the North Central deserves a chance come 2019.

Saraki made the statement while addressing party faithful and supporters in Jos on Sunday.

He said that the North Central had worked hard for the country and had remained loyal in spite of the seeming division in the country.

“This is our time in the North Central; this is our chance.

“We have worked hard for this country; we have laboured so much even with so much division we remain united and loyal.

“I believe that all of us in the North Central are one family.

“The people of Plateau are lucky; they have two presidential aspirants, myself and Baba Jang.

“I call Plateau my home state because I believe that everything that affects one member of a family affects the other,” he said.

The aspirant said that it was time to change the narrative in the country and have a government that would include everybody.

Saraki added that if elected as president, he would ensure that criminals who kill people in the villages in Plateau and all over the country were brought to book.

He said Nigeria needed youths to take over the mantle of leadership as they remained the only hope Nigeria had to be led in the right direction.

“Plateau people have gone through so much; so many lives have been lost.

“With your support if I become president, this will not happen again.

“I will fight day and night to protect everyone and ensure that any criminal that commits a crime is made to face justice.

“We need someone who can stand for the masses and not be intimidated because he is standing for what is right, that person is Bukola Saraki,” he said.

Saraki urged the delegates in Plateau to vote for him during the primary elections, promising to give them a Nigeria that they would all be proud of.

Responding, the state chairman of the party, Mr Damishi Tango, praised Saraki for being bold and courageous in spite of the challenges he was facing as president of the senate.

Sango also lauded the aspirant for his courage in defecting from the APC, sayng that the party in the state would support him in his desire to become the number one citizen of the country. (NAN)

  • You are well prepared for Presidency – IBB tells Saraki

Former President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida has said that Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki is well prepared for the Presidency of the country.
Babangida stated this when the Senate President paid him a courtesy visit at the former military leader’s Uphill residence in Minna as part of his nationwide tour to seek support of PDP supporters and delegates for his nomination as the Presidential candidate.
Giving Saraki his support and blessing, Babangida said that with Saraki’s experience as a governor, legislator and Senate President along with his objectives for seeking election, there can be no better candidate than him.
“You have the right objective for a campaign for leadership in this country. You are much more than prepared because you have been a governor in a state, a legislator and a Senator. You have been holding the Senate for the past three years very well and the Senate have been working very well under you. “
Babangida applauded the objectives of Saraki which include unity, economic development and security.
“You spoke of three important things that are very dear to me and those of us who fought to keep this country together, the issues which are unity, economic development and security. The security of this nation is a no go area,  the security of the people and property are uppermost in your mind along with the well being of ordinary Nigeria. With these, I can say you have the right objectives for leadership of this country. “
Babangida gave Saraki his blessings and support saying he is willing to offer him advice anytime he seeks of it.
“You have my prayers and my support for these three reasons you have enumerated. I hope you keep to your objectives and hope the people will listen and believe you because the objectives are for the good of this country. I wish you well. “
Earlier, Saraki said that the nation is at a crossroad and is disunited,  stressing on the need for the nation to have a President based on his capacity to lead the nation.
He noted the need to put the nation in the right direction, give people a sense of belonging and address the security and socio economic challenges bedeviling the nation.
Saraki then promised to take the nation to enviable heights if elected as President.
“I promise you that I will work for a Nigeria that you will be proud of, that you will say that your efforts and sacrifices have been worth it.  A government that will know that there are leaders and elders and a government that will consult and bring everybody together, a government that will work hard to make sure that the country prospers.”
While meeting with PDP delegates at the party’s Secretariat in Minna, Saraki said that Nigeria needs the kind leadership which he can provide and he has put himself forward to offer the leadership.
According to him, Nigeria needs a leader that can give them a sense of belonging and a leader who understands how the executive and legislature operates and how they can work together.
  • 2019: Saraki visits Fayose, says democracy at crossroads

•Urges PDP presidential aspirants to accept primary outcome

Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday visited Ekiti State in continuation of nationwide consultations ahead of the presidential primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He met with Governor Ayodele Fayose and other PDP delegates at the Government House, Ado-Ekiti to solicit their support at the October National Convention in Port Harcourt where the party’s presidential flag bearer will be elected.

The presidential aspirant stressed that he possesses the qualities of the leader needed by Nigerians at this critical period of its history promising to give every Nigerian a sense of belonging.

Saraki said Nigeria is at crossroads with its democracy endangered claiming that democracy would have collapsed but for the intervention of the National Assembly which he heads.

The Senate boss pledged to accede to the demands of Nigerians for restructuring for the states in the federation to maximize their potentials.

Saraki said: “We are at a cross road. We are seeing great danger with our democracy, that is why your state has had a terrible experience with the kind of democracy.

“If not for what we have been doing at the NASS to sustain and protect the democracy, by now there will be nothing like democracy in Nigeria.

“So, it is important that we look for a courageous and capable President that we can be proud of. A President that will ensure that we have true democracy.

“Before now we have been voting based on sentiment, and ethnicity, so we need a leader that will allow you to reach your goal, it is time we restructure and have a state that would be able to maximise their potentials.”

Fayose advised PDP presidential aspirants to accept the outcome of the party primary election slated for October 6, 2018 and work for the success of the party.

The governor, who said that he was not supporting any particular aspirant, said he had cautioned his colleagues that they must allow the process to be credible.

Fayose said: “Nigerians are waiting for PDP to liberate them and we must be united to be able to rescue them.”

Threatening to back out of the primary election if the process is not credible, Fayose alleged that the future of the country had already been mortgaged.

He added:  “Somebody should tell Buhari to please go home and rest. The last appointment President Buhari made into the Department of State Services (DSS) further confirmed that he is insensitive. He is supposed to be the President of Nigeria.

“We never know we can get here. I am sure that you joined the APC because you thought that Nigeria will be better. Nigeria no longer have gear one to five, everything is now in reverse gear. ”

On Saraki’s entourage are Director General of Campaign Council,

Mohammed Wakil; Senate Minority Leader, Senator Biodun Olujimi; Chairman, Senate Committee on Air Force, Senator Duro Faseyi, among others.
