Bala satisfied despite loss to Sanders

Niger Tornadoes head coach, Abubakar Bala has expressed satisfaction with his side’s performance against non-league side, Sanders FC.

The top-flight side was beaten 3-2 by the non-league team in a friendly match on Saturday at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital ground in Zaria.

“We lost 2-3 to Sanders FC, though we out-played the side in every department of the game. People have called from home to express their worries over the loss to the non-league side. We quite understand their feelings but again defeat is equally part of the game of football.

“The result did not go on our way but in terms of the purpose of the game, which is mainly a test as well as assessment match I’m satisfied with what I saw. The key concentration for me is how the players are able to create chances, fight for ball, recovery rate as well as finishing.

“It’s a good match and good performance too, and I’m happy we are inching closer to perfection before the kick-off of the league. We will continue the assessment and test work in the remaining four matches on our hands before the first NPFL match.

“We will play against Nasara FC today (Sunday), then from Monday to Wednesday engage Demba Academy, Gombe United and Kaduna Professionals in Kaduna. We will work very hard to win the matches to instil confidence in the players heading into NPFL matchday 1 clash at Mountain of Fire Miracles Ministries (MFM) FC,” said the former FC Lokoja coach to supersport.com.

Tornadoes’ first league season’s match will be at MFM FC on Sunday at the Agege Township Stadium in Lagos.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew praised the impact of the club’s new arrivals following a 4-0 victory over Sydney FC.

The Premier League side moved swiftly in the transfer market to boost their options after a disappointing conclusion to the last campaign, with two of their latest recruits scoring on Tuesday.

And Pardew is confident that his new signings will shine in the upcoming season.

“It was nice to see the new boys all contribute in a really positive way,” Pardew said.

“It’s obvious we have more offensive options now with the arrivals of Rivier, Siem and Ayoze.”

Long-serving defender Steven Taylor added: “We have the pace up front to cause problems.

“Even at this stage of the season, our fitness is showing through and we looked sharp. There’s a great work ethic to the team.”

The Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa, Amb. Sonni Yusuf, has expressed satisfaction with the facilities at the disposal of Super Eagles for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Yusuf told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Correspondent in South Africa on Wednesday that the team were giving the best hotel.

“I must say that of the four teams in Group C, Super Eagles, have the best facilities; the hotel has two standard training pitches located within its precincts. We also intend to meet with the LOC on the issue of accreditation for key government officials to have access to the team and to discuss other logistics required for the team. The hotel that the team will be staying in was used for the 2010 World Cup and is still in very good shape; it is located in a secluded area of the town, with heavy security,’’ Yusuf said.

He added that the mission had notified the Nigerian community in South Africa to come out en masse to support the Super Eagles.

“In the area of support for our team, there will be no problem at all. Nigeria has one of the largest immigrant populations in South Africa. The proximity of Mbombela to Mozambique, where we also have a largeNigerian community is another advantage for us. So starting from Thursday when the team will arrive in South Africa, the huge support of the Nigerian community in South Africa will be felt,’’ Yusuf said.

Doctors ‘satisfied’ with Mandela’s progress in hospital

Doctors caring for former South African President, Nelson Mandela, said he was responding to treatment for a lung infection, the presidency announced yesterday.

Mandela, 94, was admitted to a military hospital in Pretoria on Saturday.

“He has made progress during the past 24 hours and the doctors are satisfied with the way he is responding to treatment,” said presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj, who was imprisoned with Mandela in the 1970s.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner was hospitalised in 2011 for an acute respiratory infection.

In the 1980s, while still incarcerated by the apartheid regime, Mandela suffered from tuberculosis and his lungs were said to have been damaged during years of hard labour in prison.

Mandela spent 27 years in jail for his leadership in the fight against white minority rule, or apartheid, and became South Africa’s first black president in 1994, stepping down after one term in office.

He retired from public life in 2004 and has not been seen in public since 2010.

The former president, admired for his key role in bringing democracy to South Africa and encouraging racial reconciliation, largely lives in his rural hometown of Qunu, in the Eastern Cape Province.

Visitors say that while his memory is lapsing, he is generally in good spirits.
