    Businessman takes shipper to police over ‘theft’ of $121,891 goods

    A Lagos-based Indian businessman, Satiya Prabhu Lal, has accused a shipping company of allegedly stealing and auctioning goods in a container his imported worth $120,891 (N182million).

    Lal, in a petition to the police, alleged that his container, which was imported, was fraudulently moved out of Apapa Port and auctioned without notifying him.

    He alleged that the shipper, Maerskline company, allegedly continued to extort millions of naira from him even after the container and goods had been auctioned to another auctioneer in Abuja.

    In the petition addressed to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Maritime Command, Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos, the Indian alleged that he imported a 20-foot container marked MSKU– 7934545, with bill of lading number 233042669 at the Apapa Port, Lagos, in February, last year and engaged LATEPO Nigeria Enterprises to clear the container.

    According to him, he paid N3.167 million as demurrage to Maerskline Company through his agent, Adeyemi Isaac, and later, a delivery order was issued by the company to release the container but it was discovered that the said container was placed on hold. He was told to pay additional charges of N104, 597 to revalidate the delivery order.
