  • Scavenger gets life jail for killing friend

    A scavenger, Ifeanyi Nnamoko, was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment by an Ikeja Special offences Court for killing his friend, Ifeanyi Anyanwu, during a fight.

    Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo said she gave Nnamoko Iye because of his counsel’s plea. The judge held: “The prosecution has proved the case of murder against the convict beyond reasonable doubt. I hereby find the defendant guilty of the murder of one Ifeanyi Anyanwu. However, I have carefully considered the allocutus of the defence counsel. I hereby sentence the defendant to life imprisonment.”

    The prosecutor, Mrs K. O. Sarumi, told the court that the convict committed the offence on March 4, 2011 at about 8.30 am at Oregun, Alausa, Ikeja.

    Sarumi said the convict cut off Anyanwu’s head with a cutlass.

    She said the convict and the deceased were scavengers working on the refuse dump in Ojota.

    According to her, the murder of Anyanwu was reported at Alausa Divisional Headquarters by Agada Daniels, a Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) officer in charge of the site in Ojota.

    “Daniels said that he reported for work at the LAWMA office, at Oregun refuse dump and met people running in different directions and when he inquired for the reason for the chaos, he was told that Nnamoko, who normally stays at the site, killed Anyanwu when they were fighting and ran away.

    He said he inspected the body of the deceased and immediately rushed to Alausa Police Station and alerted the police, where a patrol team accompanied him to arrest the suspect.

    During trial, a prosecution witness, C. Gift, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP), attached to the office of the Commissioner of Police, said when the police got to the crime scene, they met the deceased lying on the ground with his head almost severed off his body.

    While inspecting the body, Gift said she discovered several matchet cuts on the back and head of the deceased.

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja yesterday sentenced a 23-year-old scavenger, Abass Sanusi, to six months’ imprisonment for dangerous joint act, criminal trespass and attempt to commit theft.

    The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option of N6,000 fine.

    Sadiq advised the convict to desist from committing crimes, saying the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.

    The convict pleaded guilty to the offence and urged the court to temper justice with mercy.

    The Prosecutor, Zannah Dalhatu, told the court that Saad Mohammed reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, on Sunday.

    He said the convict and two others at large tried to steal a generating set  and were caught.

    Two other accomplices, he added, escaped.

    He said the offence contravened sections 79, 348 and 95 of the Penal Code.

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, yesterday sentenced a 21-year-old scavenger, Tahiru Sharif, to 12 months imprisonment for being in possession of stolen items.

    The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option to pay N10, 000 fine.

    He advised the convict to desist from committing crimes, saying the sentence would act as a deterrent to others.

    Sharif, of no fixed address, was convicted on a count charge.

    The convict, who pleaded guilty, begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

    The prosecutor, Florence Avhioboh, had told the court that Aliyu Madaki of 1st Avenue, Gwarimpa, Abuja, reported the matter at Gwarimpa Police Station on October 10.

    She said the complainant reported that while he was on patrol with his team of vigilante, they caught Sharif with one chair and three electric irons.

    Avhioboh said during police investigation, the convict could not give satisfactory account of how he got the items.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 319 of the Penal Code.

  • Scavenger jailed six months for theft

    •Another to be caned for stealing maize

    A Grade 1 Area Court, Kubwa, Abuja, has sentenced a 24-year-old scavenger, Yusufa Idris, to six months’ imprisonment for stealing plastic chairs and tomatoes.

    He admitted committing the offence and begged for leniency.

    The judge, Mohammed Marafa, however, gave Idris an option of N15,000 fine and warned him to desist from committing crimes.

    The prosecutor, John Okpa, told the court that Aminu Mohammed of Kaduna State reported the matter at Kubwa Police Station on August 25.

    He alleged that Idris was caught on Arab Road, Kubwa, with three plastic chairs, one rubber bucket containing onions, tomatoes and a dead chicken.

    Okpa named other items as knife, hoe and umbrella, “which Idris confessed he stole at Gbazango, Kubwa, Abuja.

    He said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    Another  scavenger, Anas Abdulkari, was ordered by a  court in Karmo, to be caned for stealing maize.

    Abdulkari, 20, resident of Gidan Bola Jabi, Abuja, was sentenced for criminal trespass and theft after he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

    He said: “Sir, I’m so sorry for stealing maize. I took only three maize because I was hungry; please forgive me.’’

    The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, said the punishment would have been severe if he had not pleaded guilty.

    The court was told that Alhaji Sale Ali of Jabi, behind Delta Line, reported the matter at Utako Police Station on August 21.

    The prosecutor, Mrs. Florence Auhioboh, told the court that the convict went to Ali’s farm and harvested maize without his consent.

    She said the convict, who was caught and handed over to the police, admitted committing the offence.

    The prosecutor said the actions violated sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code, and asked the court for summary trial after Abdulkadir pleaded guilty in line with Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justices Act, 2015.

    Scavenger bags two months imprisonment for causing grievous hurt

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a scavenger, Abdullahi Yusuf, to two months imprisonment for stabbing a man with bottle.
    Yusuf, 20, who resides at Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, pleaded guilty to a count charge of causing grievous hurt and begged the court for leniency.

    The judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave Yusuf an option of N6, 000 fine and warned him to desist from committing crime.
    Sadiq said the punishment would have been stiffer if Yusuf had not saved the court the pains of protracted prosecution.

    The prosecuting counsel, Florence Auhioboh, had told the court that the matter was reported on Aug. 15 at Utako Police Station, Abuja, by one Shola Johnson of Arab Contractors by Big Joe Transport.

    Auhioboh said that on the same date at about 9. p.m. Yusuf intentionally went to the complainant’s house and scattered his property for just no cause.
    She told the court that when the complainant tried to stop Yusuf, he became violent and attacked him with bottle.
    The prosecutor said that Yusuf used the said bottle and inflicted injuries on the complainant’s head and all over his body.
    She said that the complainant raised an alarm which attracted other neighbours and Yususf took to his heels, but was caught.
    The prosecutor added that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 247 of the Penal Code.

  • Scavenger bags six months for vandalising BRT buses

    Two men – Oladipo Omolewo and Michael Sunday – who allegedly broke into the premises of First  Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) to steal vehicle parts, were yesterday brought before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court.

    Omolewo, 45, of Kogberegbe Street, and Sunday, 27, of Abayomi Street, in Ojota, Lagos, faced a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Ihiehie Lucky said the offence was committed on October 27 at Ojota.

    He said the complainant, an Operation Manager of the first BRT Bus, reported the incident at the Ogudu Police Station.

    According to him, members of the community had in the last one month informed the authorities that some unscrupulous elements  were invading the premises to vandalise the buses.

     Omolewo, who claimed to be a scavenger he said, unlawfully entered the BRT premises and vandalised some buses.

    He said: “He has been vandalising the buses, removing radiators, turbo chargers, injectors, propellars and block engines, fuel pumps to sell.

    “He was caught in the premises with radiators and block engines and was immediately handed over to the police.

    “Sunday was caught holding a big stick in the premises by securityguards, who beat him before handing him over to the police.”

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the first accused pleaded guilty to the offence; the second  pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate O. Sule-Amzat sentenced Omolewo to six months imprisonment and granted Sunday N25,000 bail with two sureties.

    The sureties, she said, must show evidence of tax payment.
