Schneider Electric’s AirSeT gets WEF’s award

The pioneering medium-voltage switchgear technology, AirSeT, of Schneider Electric has been recognised by the World Economic Forum’s Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders as Champions of the Scope 3 Downstream Solutions Challenge in the Sustainable Design category.

The recognition highlights AirSeT’s transformative role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across electrical distribution systems. By replacing sulphur hexafluoride (SF2)—a greenhouse gas with 24,300 times the global warming potential of CO2—with pure air and vacuum technology, AirSeT eliminates one of the most potent contributors to Scope 3 emissions in electrical infrastructure.

Commenting on the recognition, Head of Climate & Nature Economy, Member of the Executive Committee, World Economic Forum, Pim Valdre, said: “Product design is where downstream impact often begins. Sustainable design can deliver exponential benefits, including lowering costs, enhancing safety, ensuring regulatory compliance and reducing emissions across the entire lifecycle.”

The company said AirSeT fully eliminates SF₆, helping customers reduce regulatory risk, enhance worker safety, and lower long-term operational costs. “Since the launch of AirSeT, we have helped avoid 1.7 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e), as of June 2025 — a contribution validated by third-party auditors as part of Schneider Sustainability Impact,” the company said.

Since the 1950s, SF₆ has enabled the industry to reduce switchgear size and improve safety. However, this has come at a significant environmental cost. AirSeT, which is the only readily available solution powered by purified air, rather than SF₆, is easy to manage and integrate, while being resilient to evolving environmental regulation.

Delivered in familiar form factors and with the same operating procedures, AirSeT is also natively digital, enabling smarter grids and AI-driven condition-based maintenance at scale across data centres, industrial sites, and infrastructure. Designed with circularity in mind, AirSeT features: enhanced electrical and mechanical components for x5 more operations, spare parts, retrofit and modernisation capabilities with removable breakers for extended lifespan.

Schneider Electric is proud to lead the way in sustainable innovation. This recognition by the World Economic Forum shows the company’s commitment to designing technologies that deliver environmental, economic, and social value.

Schneider Electric in partnership with Green Village Electricity (GVE) Projects Limited, Arnergy Solar Limited and Bank of Industry Nigeria Limited have inauguarated pilot low-cost, off-grid solar energy solutions in two states in addition to four states across the country.

The project, according to the company, is designed to provide 24kw of PV solar based off-grid electricity system to rural communities in six states.

They include Gombe, Kaduna, Anambra, Delta, Osun and Niger. The system will supply electricity to about 200 clients (residential and commercial) in  the communities through a 2km 230VAC, 50Hz mini-grid electricity distribution network.

With an average household size of seven, the estimated direct impact of the project is about 7,000 people, while an additional 500 people will be impacted through the cottage businesses and street lighting components also attached to the project.

Schneider Electric and GVE Projects Limited inaugurated the mini-grid solar project in Bisanti, Niger State and will be partnering with Anergy Solar Limited on for the inauguration of the project in Osun State. Schneider Electric’s Conext (Xantrex) Solar Hybrid solutions were used in these two states.

Following a few years of capacity building, the project has now entered into the implementation phase with a focus on the deployment of low-cost, off-grid solar energy solutions for rural communities either as a stand-alone or micro-grid system. The project explores partnerships that will promote the implementation of renewable energy solutions and provide linkages for enterprise development, especially for the rural communities in the country.

The Country President, Schneider Electric, Anglophone West Africa, Walid Sheta, said: “We believe access to energy is a basic human right. Schneider, Mikano to boost DISCOs’ activities

Two energy solution firms   Schneider Electric and Mikano International Limited have signed an aggrement  to boost activities of the 11 power distribution companies (DISCOs).

The firms, at the signing of the deal in Lagos, said they  are leveraging on their successes to make equipment, such as transformers, circuit breakers, panel builders and voltage regulators available for the  power companies.

The Vice President, Retail Business, Schneider Electric, Tonye Briggs said the partnership would help in strengthing the relationship with the DISCOs.

Briggs said his fim  has partnered with the Federal Government to ensure stable and reliable distribution of power at the national grid, adding that partnership would help  a lot.

He said Mikano has a wider reach in Nigeria, adding that the idea would help in improving electricity distribution and transmission in Nigeria.

He said:  “While Schneider Electric is a global specialist in energy management, Mikano has a wider reach in Nigeria where it provides power solution apparatus to homes and industries. We are leveraging on Mikano’s huge presence in Nigeria to provide equipment to energy service companies.

‘’Schneider Electric is a global specialist in energy management, Mikano has a wider reach in Nigeria where it provides power solution apparatus to homes and industries. We are leveraging on Mikano’s huge presence in Nigeria to provide equipment to energy service companies, especiallythe new power investors. Through this, we would impact more on the ector. It is a case of two of the major players coming together to chieve mutual growth. The partners, power firms and consumers would benefit.

Also, the Managing Director, Mikano International Limited, Christiane Farine said the partnership is timely, giving the on-going privatisation of the power sector.

Farine said: “Through the partnership, we want to provide a afer, reliable and economical energy services to consumers. This ould boost the activities of the ower Holding Company of Nigeria’s (PHCN) successor compan s and the 10 National Independent Power Plants (NIPPs) when they are eventually privatised son.  Gas is not the only problem facing the power sector. There istribution and transmission challenges. Transmission should be given due consideration by the power regulators.

“No matter the volume of electricity generated from the turbine and hydro plants, it is of no use if the transmission mechanism is not in place. Electricity must bedistributed to the consumers at the right time for growth,’’ he added.

Farine said the firm deals in ower generation, solution, steel fabrication and heavy constru ion equipment, adding that the four areas are critical to the growth of the sector.

He said the partnership ensures that Mikano supply critical electricity components to homes and industries for growth. He explained that high power voltage s destroyed many appliances because consumers do not have means of controlling it.

He said the partnership was on distributorship, adding that Schneider Electric plans to establish offices in 15 cities in the country to grow the scheme. According to him, the idea would help in complementing the partnership the Schneider Electric has with the Federal Government, especially in ensuring stable and reliable distribution of power at the grid level.
