    Church gives 23 students scholarship, food items to 150 widows

    The Assistant Pastor, Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Province 2, Region 45, Gabriel Adewuyi has urged well to do individuals, organization to be of assistance to those in need during the festive season and beyond.

    Adewuyi said this during the distribution of grinding machines to 23 widows and distribution of food items to 150 widows, on Sunday in Abuja.

    The clergy canvassed uplifting the poor in the society.

    He said: “Every year in December, we gather to praise God for what he has done since the beginning of the year.

    “The bible instructed us to take care of the less privileged; so we want to shower that they can work with, that can set them up to not depend on people again.

    “Whomever is privileged should help those who are not privileged, we should rise up to the help of the society, Jesus said the poor will always be with us, that means there will always be poor people. We should let them know that taken care of them will bring blessing to those who are their benefactors,” he said.

    Earlier, Pastor and Women Coordinator, Esther Adewuyi, noted that the food items given to the widows was a form of encouragement, to put a smile on their face.

    A beneficiary, Ruth Pius, expressed gratitude, adding that the items given to her will go a long way for her and will enable her pay her daughter’s school fees.

    Baobab Nigeria has launched its girl-child education scholarship programme.

    It advocates educational inclusivity by awarding scholarships to deserving female students.

    The initiative awarded scholarships to 16 students from Morit International School in Apapa Lagos and extended support to four girls from Rock Foundation School in Abuja.

      The ceremony for the Morit International School scholarship recipients took place at Baobab Nigeria’s headquarters in Lagos. Executives from Baobab Nigeria, in conjunction with the leadership from Morit International School presided over the event which was attended by some of the beneficiaries.

    The scholarship award for students of Rock Foundation School was unfolded at the school premises in Abuja.

    Representatives from Baobab Nigeria and Rock Foundation School  collaborated in a ceremony that celebrated the advancement of educational opportunities for young girls.

     With a commitment to addressing the disparity between boys and girls in the classroom, promoting gender equality in education, promoting inclusive education and championing good environmental practices, both ceremonies were showcase for Baobab Nigeria’s dedication to transforming lives and creating a more inclusive society through education.

    At the inauguration of its branch in Lafia, Nasarawa State, the bank’s Chief Risk Officer, Mr. Babatunde Omolere praised Nasarawa State’s environment which he said is conducive to business.

    He emphasized the bank’s dedication to supporting industrious individuals and drew parallels between the bank and the sturdy Baobab tree, highlighting their shared commitment to providing shelter and support.

     Omolere recounted the bank’s journey from its modest beginnings in Kaduna to its current status with 38 branches across Nigeria. He stressed the bank’s mission to serve the financially underserved in Nasarawa State, with a primary focus on facilitating business growth for those who have faced financial challenges.

     He proudly shared the bank’s achievements in Nasarawa, including over N1.5 billion in loans disbursed to about 2,000 clients in 2023 alone.

    Foundation awards N20 million scholarship for tech training, others

    Wisdom Ezekiel Cares (WECARE) foundation has granted scholarships totalling N20 million to 40 deserving individuals as part of its commitment to fostering education and empowerment.

    The announcement of the scholarship awards took place at the 2023 Empowerment Summit hosted by the foundation at Pertinence Place in Akowonjo, Lagos, during the weekend.

    Themed ‘Empowering Entrepreneurs: From Startups to Success with Code and No-Code Tech,’ the summit featured distinguished speakers from diverse industries, including technology, real estate, financial services, human resources, and entertainment.

    The chairman of the foundation and co-founder of Pertinence Group, Wisdom Ezekiel, initiated the event with a keynote speech focusing on the real challenges of building startups in Nigeria. He encouraged attendees to be creative with their ideas and leverage technology for success.

    Ezekiel emphasised the importance of embracing change in a rapidly evolving business landscape.

    In his words: “In a rapidly evolving world, where the landscape of business is continually reshaped by technological advancements, it is imperative for aspiring entrepreneurs to not only embrace change but to harness it for their success.

    “The entrepreneurial path is challenging, but with the right blend of innovation and determination, there is no limit to what you can achieve.”

    He encourages labour spirit among youths, emphasising the place of diligence and volunteering.

    He said: “If you’re being used, you’re useful. If you’re not being used, you’re useless because no one uses a useless person.”

    The foundation said it is providing tech training to 20 scholarship recipients, and free migration consultations to 10, while the remaining 10 would undergo certified training in movie making.

    Post-event, Ms. Goodness Madu, a scholarship recipient set to receive a free migration consultation with SettleQuick, expressed her excitement, attributing her motivation to her father.

    She said: “The word is ‘lucky’ for real. I’m ecstatic, and I can’t wait for what the experience will be like. I am grateful for this opportunity. My goal is to secure a tech job in Canada, and this free consultation is a big step forward.

    “Other scholarship awardees, including Mr. Oluwaseun Kokumo and Ageh Marian Victoria, expressed their joy and gratitude for the opportunities provided by the free Tech training with Quanta Africa and the filmmaking training with Redi Studios, respectively.

    “Distinguished guests at the event included Mr. Gbenga Totoyi, Partner at Alan & Grant; Mr. Victor Gbenga-Afolabi, Group CEO, Hazon Holdings; and Dr. Efosa Zuwa, Co-founder, EaziPay, who actively participated in panel sessions.”

    The summit also featured insights from industry leaders such as Mr. Emmanuel Osubu, Co-founder, Quanta Africa; Mr. Adetunji Ademuyiwa, CEO Datafirst; Mr. Lanre Afod, a producer and director; Mr. Kunle Omisore, film producer; and Mrs. Moyinoluwa Olutayo, a television host.

    Islamic body offers scholarship to 857 indigent students in Nasarawa

    The Islamic Society of Eggonland (ISE) a Nasarawa-based charity organisation, has awarded scholarship to 857 indigent students pursuing higher education in various academic fields in the country.

    Alhaji Umar Galle, the General Secretary of the organisation said this at a news conference in Nasarawa Eggon.

    Galle said the organisation provided scholarship to indigent students from low -income backgrounds,  regardless of their faith and ethnicity, who were pursuing higher education in various academic fields.

    He said that the amount given to each beneficiary depended on students’ course of study.

    ”For example, medicine students did not take the same amount with social science students among other fields. Out of the 857 scholarship recipients, a total of 526 are new beneficiaries and 331 are existing or old beneficiaries. Out of the 857 scholarship recipients, 649 are Muslims and 208 are Christians,” he said.

    Galle said the organisation received 758 applications in 2023, adding that it shortlisted 526 and rejected 232 based on its eligibility criteria.

    “Out of the 758 new applications, 546 were from Muslim students and 208 were from Christian students.

    ” We shortlisted 406 and 120 respectively and rejected 140 and 88 respectively,” he said.

    Abdullahi Galle said that out of the 857 recipients, 517 were males while 340 were females.

    “Out of the 857 scholarship recipients, 9 are pursuing Ph.D, 26 are pursuing M.Sc is pursuing law part 11, one is pursuing PGD and 481 are pursuing B.Sc.

    “36 are pursuing HND, 87 are pursuing NCE, 78 are pursuing ND polytechnic, 27 are pursuing ND Nursing and midwifery and 111 are pursuing ND school and college of health,” he said.

    He said that the scholarship was diverse and inclusive covering students from different religious backgrounds, genders and academic fields.

    “We believe that education is the key to empowerment and development and we are committed to supporting students who have the potential and the passion to achieve their dreams,” he said.

    Scholarship for indigent female students

    A non-profit organisation, Ajesola Solarin Majekodunmi Foundation (ASMAF), has given scholarships to five female undergraduates.

     The Founder, Prof. Ajesola Majekodunmi, said the programme is to provide financial assistance to brilliant students. She is the first female medical professor in Remo, Ogun State.

     “I was influenced to set up the Foundation based on my observation way back in my undergraduate days, how some brilliant but indigent female students in public universities go through a lot of stress to pay their school fees. The Foundation will also mentor the students by attaching them to individuals who have succeeded in their chosen careers.”

     Majekodunmi, who stressed the need for the girl-child to be given the best education for her to be reckoned with in the society, added: “We have trained doctors, lawyers, engineers and dentists from indigent families whose parents could not afford their university education. Now they have become breadwinners of those families.”

     Beneficiaries cut across the six zones of the country, with 17 girls having benefitted so far.

     Chairman of the ICPC Prof. Bolaji Awosanoye, who chaired the occasion, praised Majekodunmi for addressing the crucial issue of gender inequality through the scheme. He appealed to well meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies to support the project.

    179 Nigerians got Russian govt’s scholarships

    No fewer than 179 Nigerians have been awarded scholarships to study different programmes in Russia.

    Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman said this at the 2023/2024 pre-departure briefing of Bilateral Education Agreement Scholars to Russia in Abuja.

    The first batch has arrived in Moscow. The second and third batches would depart on November 15 and 17.

    Mamman, who was represented by the Director of Universities Education in the ministry, Mrs. Rakiya Ilyasu, advised the scholars not to see the opportunity as uncontrolled freedom to do things that would be to their disgrace.

    He explained that the country had invested a lot in them and as such required the returns of investment on their return to the country.

    “Note that you are few out of thousands who secured this opportunity, which you must not take for granted. Your parents and teachers would also be happy with your succour.

    “Your selection is part of a broader plan which ensures that brilliant Nigerians, especially those that cannot afford to study programmes that are not readily available in Nigeria, are supported to get necessary knowledge, skills and competence that would be useful in Nigeria’s development agenda.

    “I am happy to inform you that in spite of the global economic meltdown, the number of our development partners have increased and many of them now offer scholarships to Nigeria.

    “As you prepare to travel out, ensure to uphold good values, focus on your studies and be a good ambassador of your country,” he said.

    The minister also urged the scholars to always strive to abide by the laws of their host country and as well remember to be their brother’s keeper in their new environment.

    “Most importantly, you need to make your presence known to the Nigerian Embassy in Moscow. This is very necessary based on our experiences from Ukraine.

    “Your parents are also spending a lot of resources on you. Note that we all expect you to return to our dear country at the end of your studies to assist Nigeria to become a better place by contributing your quota to its development, using your new knowledge and skills,” he added.

    Also speaking, the Director, Federal Scholarship Board, Asta Ndajiwo, said the journey began in November 2022 with applications from thousands of Nigerians, which later translated to the nomination of the candidates.

    Ndajiwo praised the Federal Government efforts, especially in the payment of the scholar’s allowances from September to December.

    She also advised the scholars to do away with any extracurricular activities that could take their lives, recalling an incident with previous two scholars who lost their lives while swimming in a pool.

    Parents, students jubilate as Chinese firm fulfills N3m scholarship promise

    It was jubilation galore at the Igwebuike Grammar School Awka, Anambra State following fulfillment of scholarship promise by a Chinese firm, Zhotian Construction Company, to the students.

    Its managing director, Makoan Tu, had during a visit to the school, offered to pay fees for Senior Secondary 1 – 3 students of the school for one academic year.

    He explained that the gesture, which was part of his firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility, was in support of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s free education programme and other policies aimed at ensuring every child in the state had access to quality education.

    Confirming receipt of cheque of N3 million from the firm, the school’s principal, Mr. Jovita Arazu, appreciated the group for the gesture, particularly for fulfilling the promise within a record time.

    He said the scholarship would go a long way to alleviating hardship faced by parents and students at this critical time, adding that some parents had been calling to express their gratitude to both the firm and government.

    He said: “The firm’s managing director came yesterday during break time with a check of N3 million for the beneficiaries.

    “The students came out in their numbers to welcome him with songs and dances, while pictures were taken.

    “The Senior Prefect, who spoke on behalf of others, promised they would live up to expectations and won’t let him down. They were happy it would be a relief to their parents.

    “Some of the parents have been calling to express their gratitude to both the company and state government.

    “We thank Mr. Governor and the Commissioner for Education for facilitating that move. It will go a long way to alleviating the hardship faced by parents and students at this critical time.

    “We also want to use this opportunity to call on other well-meaning individuals and firms to offer scholarships to indigent students in their various communities.

    “There are so many students that need such help. Whatever help that’s given will be appreciated.

    “Mr. Tu is a gentleman. He made the promise two weeks from the time the discussion started and after the first day, he came to see the students. The following day, he came with the cheque. We’re very happy he fulfilled his promise within a record time.”

    Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-udeh, thanked Tu for the offer and urged the students to remain focused and dedicated to their studies.

    IT firm grants foreign scholarship to 14 Nigerian students

    Over 5,000 Nigerian students attended this year’s Aptech Career Quest, held recently by the IT firm across 15 Nigerian cities.

    The cities were Umuahia, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Ota, Owerri, Osun, Ojodu, Lagos, Kano, Ibadan, Enugu, Asaba, Calabar, Abuja, and Abeokuta.

    In Lagos, where the International Business Head for Middle East and Africa, from Aptech Computer Education, Mumbai-India, Mr Seetam Thakuri, superintended the event, 14 of 34 students were given scholarships to study in Middlesex University. Each scholarship is worth 7,500 pounds.

    According to statistics, National Bureau of Statistics, Information and Communication Technology Sector in Nigeria contributes to about 18.44 percent  of the nation’s GDP as of 2022.

    Aptech has over 23 years contributed to this, by training more than seven million students globally and over 100,000 in Nigeria at its 45 centres. It has also made investment impacts in the lives of over 10,000 Nigerians and Africans, through training in infotech and Hitech.

    NGO offers scholarship to poor students

    FOMAF Project 70, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has offered scholarship to 18 indigent students in Lagos State.

    The scholarship is an initiative of InterGuide Academy. Certificates were given to the students at a ceremony in Lagos yesterday.

    Judith Rhodes-Vivour, coordinator, said beneficiaries were from different areas in the state.

    Eight were undergraduates, eight in Junior Secondary School (JSS) and two in Senior Secondary School (SSS).  

    Gbenga Olowo, founder, recalled his humble beginning, but said he was not daunted; rather, the situation emboldened him to be focused.

     He urged beneficiaries to be focused and show dedication to their studies.

     Olowo said the scholarship would help indigent children to attain their goals, admonishing them to always put God first in all they do.

     He added: “The scholarship programme has been on since I turned 70 last year and this is the second award. Last year, 25 scholarships were awarded. This year we are giving out 18.

     “Everybody needs a destiny helper. Because the way I came into life, jumping from one house to the other, people helping my parents to nurture me makes me who I am today.”

     Olowo said the awardees went through tough selection, stressing 80 students applied.

     He warned that any student who failed to keep excellent academic record would be dropped.

     Mrs. Biso Olowo, co-founder, had urged beneficiaries not to be carried away by the good things of life and to take their education as a priority.
