I wanted to score on my debut —Ideye

West Bromwich Albion record signing, Brown Ideye, made his much anticipated debut for the Baggies and the Nigerian showed his qualities but after getting so close on two occasion the ball just couldn’t hit the back of the net.

Ideye, who left Ukrainian club, Dynamo Kiev to West Brom over the summer, was introduced in the 52nd minute in the match against Southampton and his introduction saw an instant impression.

The African Nations Cup winner,Ideye told WBA.co.uk that it was a good game but he felt it would have been better if he got a goal on his debut.

“It was a good debut but I really wanted to score ” Ideye said.

Brown Ideye got close twice within the 40 minutes he played, he had a header that hit the side netting and a nice turning inside the box but Southampton goal keeper, Fraser Forster was alert and raced off his goal line to claim a good save off Ideye’s effort.

Ideye shared his views on those two moves that nearly hit the back of the net on his debut.

“The first header was close,in my mind it was in,I saw the ball and anticipated a move to the back post, I was unlucky,”

“The second chance, I made a great turn but the ‘keeper came out very quickly and it was a good save,”Ideye told the club’s official website.

West Brom: Ideye must score like Osaze

    • Coach yet to see him play

Super Eagles forward Brown Ideye will not only need to meet but surpass the standard set at West Brom by compatriot and former ace of the club Osaze Odemwingie.

West Brom coach Alan Irvine, who made the submission, confessed that he has never watched Ideye play live but expressed hope that the former Dynamo Kiev striker, who crossed over to The Hawthorns for a whooping  £10million, would live up to expectation.

Irvine is heading into his first Premier League season as a coach following his appointment in June and he noted with delight that Odemwingie, now at Stoke City, scored a record 30 goals for the side before bidding them goodbye in 2013.

“It would be fantastic if he could have the same impact as Odemwingie did,” the 56-year-old said.

“I don’t know much about Brown Ideye – I’ve not seen him live, but people we trust have done.

“It’s not necessarily something that is detrimental to me not to have seen him live, though ideally I would like to because that’s how I like to do my work. “But we’ve done our research on him and what we have done is found decent players in the past in this way,”

If things work out well for 25-year-old Ideye, who has made 24 appearances for the Super Eagles scoring five goals in the bargain, surpassing Odemwingie’s record at West Brom will not be a problem. The former Ocean Boys and Sochaux ace scored 33 goals for Dynamo Kievin in 74 appearances between 2011 and 2014.

West Brom will be the fourth international club Ideye will be playing for having played for Swiss side Neuchâtel Xamax, Sochaux and Dynamo Kiev.

    Chima hopes to score more

The 23-year old helped his club progress to the quarter finals of the Norwegian cup with a 4-1 victory over the Mjondalen club, and says he hopes to put the ball in the back of the net with more frequency between now and the end of the season.

“My scoring rate hasn’t been that good this season. My coaches have often commended my overall play and the assists I make for my teammates, but the truth is, I want to score more often.

“And the truth is, I hope to score a lot more before the end of the season. I feel I can still improve and I’m really working hard towards that,” he said to sl10.ng.

  • Akinjide and his Ajimobi score

SIR: Chief Richard Akinjide granted an interview which was published in The Punch newspaper of Sunday, February 2,. It was quite revealing, but only to discerning minds. The one-time National Party of Nigeria (NPN) stalwart, known for his wonky 12 2/3 analysis of the 1979 elections, and foremost lawyer, was evasive on several issues raised by the reporter on the state of the nation. He was however reflective on the tough times his party, the PDP, is currently facing, both at the national level and in Oyo State.

When asked on his assessment of the incumbent governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, he told the reporter that he would not score Ajimobi’s government a first class if he were to mark its score but would rank him average. Apparently lamenting the loss of his party to the then ACN, Akinjide had, at the early part of the government, told the world that Ajimobi’s government would soon leave the Government House. For a man with such nihilistic divination on a man he perceived as a political enemy to now score the same man he predicted his political and governmental death an average pass mark is indeed a favourable judgment.

Chief Akinjide is known by all to be an exceptionally stingy man to everyone but himself, even in his ranking and estimation of the other person. When he attacked the late Lamidi Adedibu and his politics, Ibadan people asked him to point at a particular person who had ever benefitted from him, even though he is one of the most successful Ibadan sons, unlike Adedibu whom Ibadan people at least ate a plate of amala in his house everyday.

In the said interview, Akinjide praised his minister daughter, Ms. Jumoke Akinjide to high heavens, committing Political Oedipus of romancing his own daughter preparatory to the 2015 governorship. What Mr. 12 2/3 has forgotten is that in Ibadan, we, like the biblical trait of Almighty God, will demand the sin of the father from the daughter, up till three generations.

In any case, only a blind will not see the dualizations going on in all the nooks and crannies of Oyo State, the transformation of a once-centre of filth into a metropole by Ajimobi, the Hobbesian state of nature that Ibadan became, even under the tip of the nose of Akinjide and the peaceful, good governance that the APC government is giving the people now.

For a man like Akinjide, a pass mark from him is like scoring 120 per cent in a thorough examination!
