Dyche praises  Awoniyi  on ending goal drought

Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche has praised Taiwo Awoniyi after the Nigeria international striker ended a near year-long goal drought to inspire a crucial 2-0 Premier League victory over Brentford.

The win moved Forest five points clear of the relegation zone and boosted confidence in their survival push.

Forest opened the scoring in the 12th  minute through Igor Jesus, who finished calmly after being set up by Ola Aina. Awoniyi, introduced in the 68th  minute, sealed the win with a powerful solo effort eleven minutes later.

The goal was Awoniyi’s first since February 11, 2025, when he scored against Exeter, bringing an end to a prolonged spell without finding the net.

Dyche praised the striker’s mentality and patience.

“He’s worked hard, trained well and stayed positive,” he said. “I told him to be free, and he looked free when he came on. It was a very good finish.”

Awoniyi’s return to form underlined Forest’s growing belief as they continue their battle for Premier League survival.

Nottingham Forest appoint Sean Dyche as new manager

Nottingham Forest have appointed former Burnley and Everton boss Sean Dyche as their new manager.

The 54-year-old Englishman, who has signed a contract to run until the summer of 2027, becomes the Forest’s third different boss this season.

Dyche succeeds Ange Postecoglou, who lasted just 39 days and was sacked 17 minutes after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat by Chelsea in the Premier League.

Postecoglu did not win any of his eight games in charge – drawing two and losing six – after he was brought in to replace Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked just three matches into the campaign.

Forest are 18th in the league table after one win in eight games during what has been a difficult start to the season.

Dyche’s first game will be a Europa League game at home to Porto on Thursday before Forest are at Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.

The process to appoint a new manager was led by Forest’s global head of football Edu Gaspar and global technical director George Syrianos.

Former Italy and Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini also held discussions with Forest about the post, while Fulham manager Marco Silva was also known to be admired by the club.

“A respected and experienced Premier League manager, Dyche brings the perfect blend of character, tactical acumen and proven achievement to guide the club through its next chapter,” said a Forest statement.

“As a former Forest youth player who lives locally, Dyche also has a deep understanding of the values and pride of Forest and its supporters.

“His appointment represents the best opportunity for a successful and competitive season across both domestic and European competitions.”

Dyche’s coaching staff will include Ian Woan and Steven Stone, who both played for Nottingham Forest.

“It’s a mess isn’t it?” said BBC Sport football pundit Chris Sutton on the Monday Night Club before Dyche’s appointment was confirmed.

“If Dyche gets over the line it is an admission that they got it wrong with Ange Postecoglou and are thinking about survival.

“Dyche has always managed clubs where it has been a struggle. He bucked the trend at Burnley and got the best out of the players he had and proved himself to be an extremely capable manager.

“At Everton he took over a team in trouble and stabilised the club. He had points deductions to contend with.

“Forest want to stay in the league so it seems a sensible appointment. They won’t go down, they have too many good players.”

  • Forest in advanced talks to appoint manager Dyche

Forest in advanced talks to appoint manager Dyche

Nottingham Forest are in advanced talks to appoint Sean Dyche as their manager.

Dyche is the main contender to become the next Forest head coach, following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou, and the Premier League club hope to conclude a deal on Monday.

Postecoglou was sacked 17 minutes after Forest’s 3-0 defeat by Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Forest are 18th in the table after just one win in eight league games, during what has been a season of upheaval.

Dyche has had positive talks over the past 24 hours and sources close to the appointment have told BBC Sport his chances of getting the job have improved significantly over the weekend.

Roberto Mancini has also held discussions with Forest officials, while Fulham manager Marco Silva is admired but under contract.

There is also a large release clause in Silva’s contract that has emerged as a factor, given Forest have already spent on sacking Postecoglou and Nuno Espirito Santo this season.

Whether Silva would be prepared to leave Fulham mid-season is also understood to be an issue.

Sources are indicating that Dyche is currently the standalone candidate, given the difficulties in appointing Silva, while the initial interest in Mancini is understood to have cooled.

  • Everton sack Dyche hours before FA Cup tie

Everton sack Dyche hours before FA Cup tie

Premier League strugglers Everton sacked manager Sean Dyche, just hours before their FA Cup third-round tie against Peterborough.

Speculation about Dyche’s future had intensified with reports suggesting Everton’s new owners, the US-based Friedkin Group, were talking to potential successors since completing a £400 million ($492 million) takeover last month.

Everton said in a statement Dyche had been “relieved of his duties as senior men’s first-team manager with immediate effect” after two years in charge, with the process to appoint a new boss under way.

The Toffees are once again battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League after winning just one of their past 11 games, with that sole success coming against fellow drop candidates Wolves in December.

Everton Under-18s head coach Leighton Baines and club captain Seamus Coleman will take charge against third-tier Peterborough on an interim basis while the Liverpool side seek a permanent replacement for Dyche.

Former Manchester United and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, currently in charge of Turkish club Fenerbahce, has recently been linked with Everton.

Mourinho has experience of working with the Friedkin Group at Roma, although the Italian club sacked him just under a year ago.

David Moyes, who managed Everton between 2002 and 2013, ex-England coach Gareth Southgate, Brentford boss Thomas Frank and Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola are also among the reported contenders to succeed Dyche.

Everton have won only three times in 19 league matches this season and are languishing in 16th  place, with only one point separating them from the relegation zone.

Asked earlier this week if the club were considering his position, Dyche’s answer suggested he knew the sack could be looming.

“To be clear, it should be,” the former Burnley boss said. “At the end of the day, if you’re a business of this size, succession planning should surely be part of their diligence. I’ve got no problem with that at all.

“I think the noise has grown very powerful here. It does. But we’ve had it before.

“The players haven’t lacked effort but it’s obviously affecting them because you can see it in their performances.”

Dyche took charge at Everton in January 2023 and kept them in the top-flight despite numerous issues, including last season’s points deduction for breaching Premier League rules on profit and sustainability.

They finished 17th  in Dyche’s first season, avoiding the drop with a victory against Bournemouth on the last day, and came 15th last term, extending their streak of being ever-present in English football’s top-flight since 1954.

But chief among Everton’s problems under the 53-year-old Englishman were a lack of entertainment and a paucity of goals.

Everton’s tally of just 15 this season is the second worst in the Premier League, behind only bottom of the table Southampton’s 12.

Dyche’s reliance on aggressive long-ball tactics had worked well on a limited budget at Burnley, who defied the odds to stay in the Premier League for much of his 10-year spell as manager.

But Everton fans demand more entertaining fare from their team, making it especially painful when they failed to muster a single shot on target in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth and managed only two in their 2-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in the previous game.

That proved the final straw for the Friedkin Group and Everton will now begin the search for their fifth permanent manager in the past four years.

Everton’s new owners will be mindful that the club are playing their final season at Goodison Park before moving to a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock next term.

Goodison has been Everton’s home for 132 years and the Friedkin Group would surely like an eye-catching appointment to lead them into the new era.

Dyche, who was in the last year of his Everton contract, is the sixth manager in the 20-team Premier League to lose his job this season.
