    Martins China move ‘not completed’

Seattle Sounders general manager, Garth Lagerwey, has said Obafemi Martins transfer to China has not yet been finalised.

Lagerwey confirmed that Martins is not with the club at training camp in Walnut, California, adding that there is interest in the Nigerian forward from a Chinese club.

“It could take a while to have that resolved,” africanFootball.com quoted the official as saying on the ex-Inter Milan striker.

“And there’s really nothing we can add at this point.”

Lagerwey said the club hopes to know more about the transfer in the coming days.

“We’ll do what we need to do, we have contingency plans. If that third DP spot opens up, it gives us a lot more roster flexibility and the ability to implement our long-term vision for this team,” he said.

    Martins rescues Seattle Sounders

Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins was again the hero for MLS side Seattle Sounders when he scored the equaliser to earn them a point at Houston Dynamo.

‘Oba’ as he is called in the USA has now scored 15 goals this season, just two goals shy of his tally last season.

On Sunday, the former Birmingham City striker struck in the 82nd minute to deny the hosts victory.

Seattle Sounders are fourth on the table with 48 points from 33 games. Seattle are in for final series play-off spot.

  • Martins scores again

Nigeria international footballer can’t stop scoring goals despite being ignored by handlers of the Super Eagles.
Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins was on target for Seattle Sounders as they recorded a 3-0 home win over FC Dallas in a Major League Soccer match on Sunday.
The 28-year-old headed in a Mauro Rosales free-kick in the eighth minute, to open the scoring for the Sounders.
Eddie Johnson added a second in the 22nd minute, and a stoppage time penalty from Brad Evans helped secure a club record 10th straight home win for the Sounders.
Martins has so far scored seven goals in 11 starts (and three substitute appearances) for Seattle Sounders in the MLS this season.
  • Seattle Sounders ‘abandon’ Martins

Obafemi Martins’ wait to board the plane to the United States to start a new phase of his career will have to wait, as the MLS club failed to complete the deal as expected on Thursday.

Sounders failed to deposit the N606m (€3m) required to activate the release clause in Martins’ contract by the 6:40pm cut-off time, and resumed their efforts to sign the Nigerian international again on Friday.

According to Las Provincias, the LFP was notified and were expecting Obafemi Martins, or his agent, to deposit the required amount to active his release clause, but they were unable to make the deposit in a timely manner.

Representatives of Seattle Sounders are currently in Valencia trying to close the deal, which is now expected to go through on Friday instead.

The only comment to have come from Martins, was to suggest that: “Hopefully everything is resolved (on Friday).”

There has been considerable negotiation between Martins, his agent and Levante, over issues of what he had suggested were unpaid image rights, which now appear to have been waived by the player.

If as expected, the funds for the transfer are paid into the LFP account on Friday, the Nigerian striker will officially become a Seattle Sounders player.
