  • Governor declares for second term today

Akwa ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel will today declare his intention to contest for a second term  on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Emmanuel had, on Monday, during an endorsement rally by the people of Eket Senatorial District at Onna Township Stadium, hinted that he will declare his interest to vie for the Hilltop Mansion for a second term.

At a pre-declaration press conference at the NUJ Press Centre, Uyo, Director General of his Divine Mandate Organisation, former Military Administrator Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga, said Emmanuel’s second term quest was anchored on justice, equity and fair play.

According to Nkanga, the governor’s second term declaration is in tandem with the power rotation agreement among the three senatorial districts, adding that Uyo and Ikot Ekpene senatorial districts had done eight years, therefore it is only fair Emmanuel from Eket complete his eight years.

He said the governor would declare today (Friday, August 24), at the 30,000-capacity Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, where PDP supporters and stakeholders are expected to show solidarity and endorsement.

According to Air Commodore Nkanga, who also led Udom’s first term campaign organisation, the governor’s track-records of effective performance in his five-point pre-election agenda, will recommend him for re-election.

He urged party faithful and the electorate to rally round the governor’s second term agitation, adding that it will be out of place for Udom’s second term to be truncated when former governors Obong Victor Attah (1999-2007), from Uyo Senatorial District, and Godswill Akpabio (2007 to 2015), from Ikot Ekpene, had their two terms.

Chairman of the Central Planning Committee (CPC), Onofiok Luke, Speaker of the House of Assembly, said Udom would only realise his industrialisation agenda when assisted to secure his second tenure.

“It is now an incontrovertible fact that since the return of democracy in 1999, the state has prominently featured in the small league of states in Nigeria which has had the benefit of development-driven leadership”, he said, and urged the people not to be distracted by political sentiments going on.

Commissioner for Information Charles Udoh said his boss deserved a second term, going by performance in key areas; roads, job creation, security and infrastructural consolidation.

  • Monarch backs Ambode for second term

The traditional ruler of Araromi-Ibeju in Ibeju/Lekki Local Government of Lagos State, High Chief Lukuman Olayemi Arowolo Adebambo, Gbadewolu Adegboro 1, has endorsed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for second term.

Adebambo, who spoke at the 5th anniversary of the Children’s Day in his community, held at Araromi Playing Ground, where he donated items to primary and secondary school pupils, said Ambode deserved to be re-elected because he had given Lagosians the dividends of democracy.

He said it was obvious that transformation was ongoing in Lagos, adding that the citizens should re-elect the governor to enable him complete the projects and give them more democracy dividends.

He said: “As the traditional ruler of Araromi-Ibeju, I implore my subjects to vote for Governor Ambode next year, to allow continuity of good programmes. I also advise other Lagosians to vote for him.

“Besides the governor, Lagosians should vote for other candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress.”

Chief Adebambo urged politicians to eschew bitterness and rancour, as the general election approaches.

He said the interest of the nation should be their priority, adding that they should promote peace.

“Without peace, our country cannot develop. This is why our politicians should not play politics of bitterness. They should implement programmes that will enhance the growth of the nation,” the monarch said.

  • Can Bello get second term?

All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains in Kogi State are up in arms against Governor Yahaya Bello, who they accuse of bad governance and intolerance of opposition. Group Political Editor Emmanuel Oladesu and JAMES AZANIA examine the style of the governor that has drawn the ire of Kogites.

Yahaya Bello, governor of Kogi State, is the youngest governor in the country. However, he is arguably the most controversial governor.

In the last three years, he has been in the news. Bello assumed the reins in a controversial manner. According to observers, he came to reap where he did not sow.

The death of the All Progressive Congress (APC) flag beareer, Prince Abubakar Audu, rendered the 2015 governorship poll inconclusive. Instead of allowing his running mate, James Faleke, to complete the process, Bello was asked to replace him on the supplementary ballot.

After succeeding former Governor Idris Wada, observers said he turned himself into a thin god. He shunned the option of reconciliation and adorned himself in the garment of a warrior. Bello has not been interested in an all-inclusive government, but a winners takes it  all.

Many stakeholders were sidelined. Then, hostility broke out. Other APC chieftains cried foul, saying that the governor had become a lord of manor. Instead of promoting peace in the troubled chapter, Bello only believes that, once he reiterates his loyalty to President Muhammadu Buhari and he has the backing of the national chaimran, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, all is well in Kogi APC.

More worrisome is the governor’s style of governance. Inputs from stakeholders in the academia, labour, industry and other sectors have been resisted. Since the governor did not have solid campaign promises, his blue print is suspect.

Cries of despondency fill the air in the Northcentral state. Infrastructure battle has collapsed. The heterogenous state is agonising across the sectors. Like many states, the governor is unable to pay salaries of workers promptly.

Today, Kogi is one of the most risky states. Insecurity is the order of the day. The number of Nigerians that have been kindnapped along Lokoja-Abuja road is a testimony.

Fed up with the derailment, prominent indigenes have cried out. Venting his anger, Faleke said the government lacked a meaningful direction. “Kogi has abundant human resources. The governor has refused to tap them. And he lacks expereince”, he said.

Faleke said Bello is killing Kogi State. He said: “The political situation in Kogi State is very dicey for our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) because of the various happenings; the claim by civil servants about the non-payment of salaries, the counter-claim of the governor that he has paid all. As at today, tertiary institutions are closed, according to their workers, for non-payment of salaries and arrears.

“As at today, health institutions are in comatose for lack of salaries to the workers. Unfortunately, Kogi State is a civil service state. There are no industries. So, the moment the salaries of those civil servants are not paid, it means that the economy of the state will be in comatose. So, I can clearly tell you that our party has a problem in the state.”

The federal legislator also said the governor has marginalised many APC chieftains. The governor is the governor, but he has refused to be father of all. This governor has appointed as at last count over 200 staff, from commissioners to SSAs and out of 286 staff, only 43 are original APC members. You can just imagine that the rest are PDP. That’s is the crux of the matter.

“You engage sole administrators and virtually all your sole administrators, except very few, are original APC members. If our people and party members went to the poll against the PDP members and you now engage those PDP members we opposed at each polling unit, they are now the ones dictating the affairs of the state, you know psychologically, the APC members will not be happy and that’s what exactly is happening.”

Lamenting that Bello is against reconciliation, Faleke said: “Since he became governor, he has not called me. I think the governor lacks maturity. He lacks maturity in his handling of the affairs of the state. He was not prepared. It was a gift given to him. Unfortunately, because he didn’t work for the gift, he does not know how to go about it. He can’t do it well.”

Elder stateman Gen. David Jemibewon has also decried the governor’s activities, saying that he lacked focus. He said the challenge of governing the state has overwhelmed him, urging the people to show him the way out during the next election.

Kogi APC is a disunited chapter. The governor’s style has further polarised the party.

At a time many states were cautious about the farm grazing proposals, Bello quickly embraced it, to the consternation of his people who feared that it could be a prelude to disaster.

Recently, the recall of Senator Dino Melaye failed. It was alleged that the process was intigated by the governor. The failed recall was interpreted as a vote of no confidence in the governor.

The question is will Bello secure a second term in Kogi?

Kogi APC is ebbing away. For the state, divides of democracy are scanty. Yet, there is no prospect of liberation in the nearest future.

The chapter has been weakened by litigations aggrieved party members. Many APC chieftains bade farewell to the state, over alleged ‘one-man show’ by the governor.

Embattled chairman of the party, Alhaji Haddi Ametuo, and a sizeable number of officers have been to be labelled ‘Diaspora APC’, by those that were to supplant them in Kogi, while erstwhile APC chieftains, including former acting governor Clarence Olafemi, were to retreat.

The well-worn and yet running encounter with Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West), one time ‘man Friday’ to the governor, has escalated.

As the crisis between the governor and Melaye veered towards the dangerous, observers recall the latter’s role during Bello’s inauguration as governor in January 2016, and shortly after.

Besides, battles with the leadership of the House of Assembly and aggrieved members of the party, have also left their strain.

There were allegations that the governor appointed people that had no hand in the victory of the party at the governorship poll.

Ametuo said that the governor got the mandate through the grace of God, after the demise of Audu, the original candidate of the party, who was already coasting to victory before his sudden death. He said party members who toiled for the victory were left out ‘in the cold’.

He alleged that over 80 percent of the appointments were made by the Chief of Staff to the governor, Edward Onoja.

He said: “This governor has appointed over 200 aides– from commissioners to SSAs and out of the 286, only 43 are original APC members. You can imagine that the rest are PDP. That is the crux of the matter”.

Ametou explained that over 80 percent of those in Bello’s cabinet were a mixture of the PDP and non-party members, adding that the composition was not sustainable for  2019.

Analysts of the inner workings at the Lugard House, the seat of government, opine that Bello and his Chief of Staff, are but two sides of the same coin, a view that the governor himself has on many occasions unwittingly validated, with his description of the latter as his “Siamese twin brother”.

One of Bello’s earliest political war front in Kogi was at the House of Assembly and the removal of the then Speaker, Momohjimoh Lawal of the PDP, which at the time was in the majority, replacing him with Umar Imam of the APC. The task was achieved with the help of five members; the G-5 lawmakers.

As his administration forged on, amidst policies that attracted more critics, especially the controversial workers’ screening and verification exercise, tax reform and beautification and landscaping work in the capital, Lokoja, Bello asserted that he has the singular record of having the “most malicious opposition in the history of the Fourth Republic in Nigeria”.

He said even those who dreamt of becoming governor had developed unholy romance with the ‘cup of hatred and bitterness.” It does not matter to them that Kogi State belongs to all of us’, he added.

Bello said “their antagonism merely gives” his government more reasons to work harder to prove them wrong.

He added: “It does not matter to them that the fire they kindled among our tribes and zones today will burn them if they ever arrive at Lugard House in the future. They do not care that the young people they give arms today or indoctrinate with hate to make Kogi State ungovernable for Governor Yahaya Bello will become the security threats of their own period if they ever become governor.

“It does not matter to them that the investor they scare away with their lies today is an employer of labour and a taxpayer they will not have in their own time, assuming God gives them the opportunity to lead the state. It is now a proven fact that they can have no joy in whatever does not paint Kogi State as the ‘Hobbesian’ society of continual fear and danger.

“It pains them to hear of our electricity projects. Their heart is broken to hear labour has called off their strikes and our children can go back to schools and our people can get attention in the hospitals. They want to die when they hear that we have concluded the screening exercise and have nearly completed payment of salaries and arrears, because it removes the only talking point they have against us.

“Unfortunately, what they have is a lifestyle disease, which no doctor can help them with unless they are willing to change. We will leave them to either purge their own consciences of evil motives, or continue to boil in their own hatred”, he said.

The administration has counted the completed Kogi Revenue House, ongoing renovation work at the Government House, environmental work in the capital, roads construction/rehabilitation and sundry other developments as part of its achievement in office.

But, as Bello continues to reiterate his commitment to serving Kogi, his critics, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), maintain that there is nothing on ground to show for his almost three at the helm of affairs.

  • ‘Buhari deserves second term’

Critics of President Muhammadu Buhari have been advised to desist from violating his constitutional right to seek re-election.

A group, the Buhari Votes Guard and Awareness (BVGA), said President Buhari has performed well in the areas of anti-corruption fight security and economy, adding that he deserves a second term.

Briefing reporters yesterday in Abuja on the state of the nation, National Coordinator of BVGA. Kailani Muhammad said President Buhari has always been committed to the unity of the country adding that those fighting against his re-election wants corruption to continue.

Muhammad faulted comments by the National Chairman of the Poeples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, that former Nigeria presidents and leaders are united against Buhari’s second term tenure.

President Buhari, he said, has made a lot of enemies, especially with his anti-corruption war, adding that the war has bruised so many former: “untouchables. We expected a backlash, but not of this magnitude.”

Muhammad said: “Recent developments on the political scene in this part of our clime, to serious political analysts and observers, are quite amusing, at the same time, disturbing. The terrain, actors and event -makers seem to be at variance with reality and are instead wrapped in their mixedup emotions and grapping at straws within reach without the slightest idea of where the fierce wind of destiny and “Change” will dump them.

“The political gladiators who reigned and ruined the nation, her economy and her citizens seem to be at a loss as to what political theory to use that will bounce them back to recognition and relevance in the nation’s political space. Hence, the tragic strategy of twisting and twitting of mixed up messages and wrong signals to gain sympathy from the people they collectively covertly or otherwise sent into poverty. in the midst of plenty, Nigerians became slaves in Libya, sex merchants in Italy, France and other parts of the world under their watch.

He added: “Also under their watch as supposed leaders, Chibok girls were abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents while writing exams and kept hostages for a period spanning over four good years until Buhari came to the rescue.

“The twisting of the statement of PMB while in London is a typical example of a vain drowning group. We know Mr President has made a lot of enemies, especially, with his anticorruption War. This war against corruption has bruised so many former untouchables. Yes, we expected a backlash, but not of this magnitude.

  • apc elders back Buhari for second term

The Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Forum has endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari’s bid for a second term.

The group described the president as a great leader, who is tackling the challenges of nationhood and development.

Rising from its monthly meeting held at the residence of its Chairman, Chief George Akosile, in Igbara-Odo,  the forum said Buhari deserved a second term because of his performance in the last three years.

In a communiqué by Akosile and the Secretary, Chief Abiodun Ajayi,  the forum hailed  the rejection of tenure elongation for party executives at ward, local government, state and national levels.

On the Ekiti governorship primary, the elders advised  delegates to be “rational and be guided by maturity, experience, good character” in the choice of the candidate for the July 14 poll.

The forum urged the aspirants to refrain from using hate speeches, asking them to work as a team to win the election.

The elders also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct credible, transparent, free and peaceful election.

They urged the government to fill vacant  positions in the federal boards, agencies and parastatals in respect of Ekiti APC members.

The elders advocated that Ekiti should be included in the School Feeding Programme of the APC-led Federal Government.

  • Workers endorse Ayade for second term

THE  organised labour in Cross River State yesterday endorsed Governor Ben Ayade for a second term in office.

The endorsement was made known by the state Chairman of the NLC, John Ushie, in his address to mark the 2018 May Day celebration at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar, the state capital.

It came on the heels of the payment of May salaries to the state’s workers on the eve of this year’s workers’ day celebration.

Since the inception of the administration, workers have always received their salaries in advance.

Ushie told the gathering that the decision of the organised labour to endorse the governor has to do with his impressive performance in office since assuming the reins of leadership in the state.

He said: “In view of what you have done so far in Cross River State since your assumption of office on May 29, 2015 in the area of socio-economic, political and manpower development as attested by many, and in view of your workers friendly posture, we the workers of Cross River State have viewed critically the options open to us and our future, and have agreed on this day to massively support your second term in office.

“Indeed, as a new minimum wage is being proposed, we know that only you can and have the capacity to pay us our salaries without fail. We therefore urge you to bid for a second term in office come 2019 general election.”

The TUC Chairman in the state, Clerks Out, lauded the governor for providing employment opportunities to residents through the construction of the garment factory, the Calabar pharmaceutical factory, Cocoa processing plant in Ikom, the ultramodern rice mill in Ogoja as well as the Rice seedlings center and several other industries.

Ayade said he was humbled by his adoption for the 2019 elections by the organised labour.

He promised to continue to give priority to the welfare of the citizenry over every other consideration.

The governor said: “I want to thank you all as workers of Cross River State for finding it necessary to honour me in a day of this nature. This honour is a commitment. It is a challenge and responsibility on my part to do even more.

“Therefore, your choice of my adoption come 2019 is a clear testimonial that that my philosophy, my focus on the stomach, that I must put food on the table, has worked.

“The only thing I owe society and God is to ensure that these people, who have been standing under the sun, who have made the choice of reaffirming their commitment to me in 2019 is that at the fullest of time, you will be happy you did.”

  • ‘Why Ambode deserves second term’

Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos have said  Governor Akinwunmi Ambode deserves a second term.

They explained that the governor deserved a second term, based on his performance, urging Lagosians to extend his tenure to the state beyond 2019.

The party stalwarts also set up a mobilisation group, ‘the Ambode Mandate Support Group,’ to drum support for the governor, who they also requested to seek re-nomination for next year’s election.

The Coordinator of the group, Omoyele Oris-Sulaimon, lauded Ambode for his creative financial management, successful infrastructure battle, rural-urban integration efforts, the development of the tourism sector, job creation and security in the metropolis.

He spoke with reporters at Ikeja on the activities of the new group. With him were other members, including Chief Sunny Ajose, Hon. Alawiye King, Hon. Paul Kalejaye, Chief Tunde Temionu, Mrs. Bolanle Akinyemi-Obe, Hon. Tunde Braimoh, Hon. Abiodun Mafe, Dr. Rasak Balogun, Mr. Hakeem Enilolobo, Hon. Toba Oke, Yemi Ali, Hakem Bamgbola, Hon. Adedeji Joseph, Hon. Shamusedeem Olaleye, Hon. Joseph Bamgbose, Adekunle Olayinka, Wale Ojora, Kamal Olorunoje, Kolade Alabi, Wale Adelana, and Afolabi Kasim.

Sukaimon said the group has set up 20 directorates to take charge of critical assignments germane to the realization of second term for the governor. The directorates include Administration, Research and Intelligence, Ethnic Nationalities, Planning and Statistics, ICT, Finance, Budget, Media, Welfare, Women Affairs, Monitoring and Evaluation, Protocols and Events, and Mobilisation.

He said a Directorate of Party Affairs will also be set up to liaise with the party to foster a harmonious relationship and avoid conflicts.

Sulaimon said no fewer than 130 volunteer groups clamouring for a second term for the governor have agreed to team up with the organisation to achieve the objective.

He clarified that the group was set up not to intimidate any governorship aspirant, adding that people are free to also drum support for aspirants of their choice in an atmosphere of democracy.

Sulaimon, a three-time chairman of Bariga Council, said: “This is not a structure that the governor has put in place. This is a structure that those who loved the governor has put in place.”

Justifying the endorsement of the governor for a second term, he said there is the need for him to consolidate on his achievements in the interest of Lagosians.

He said the mobilisation by the group is targeted at Lagosians so that they can endorse Ambode’s second term bid at the poll.

The coordinator said: “Governor Ambode has brought a new approach to governance at a time of economic difficulties. He believes that time is money. Thus, he decided to resolve the traffic snarl in Lagos. He is not running government for the elite, but concerned about the development of both urban and rural areas. That informed the first contract of 114 roads and the projects have been done across the 57 councils.

“The governor has also done 131 internal roads. He has in the process created jobs for artisans, peasants, sand suppliers, bricklayers, carpenters, food vendors. The way and manner the governor is developing the tourism potential of the state is second to none.”

Sulaimon praised Ambode for completing 21 network of roads in Alimoso area, noting that he hs accomplished the same in Agboyi-Ketu area.

Lauding the governor for financial creativity, he said Ambode has lived up to expectation in the area of judicious spending for developmental projects.

He added: “Ambode is talking about a movement to a smart city at a time some people are still dreaming of a mega city. He has created employment through the Neighbourhood Watch, with 5,700 employed. Employment generation is reducing crime in the state. More teachers have been recruited and the process is transparent.

“Ambode has been able to ensure security of life and property in Lagos State. The approach the governor has taken is to prevent crime.”

  • Badagry endorses Ambode for second term

Stakeholders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Badagry Local Government Area have endorsed the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, to contest as governor of the state for the second term in the 2019 general elections.

Conveying the endorsement of Governor Ambode for the second term by the people of all communities in the local government area at the Badagry Local Government Town Hall on Thursday, the chairman of the local government, Hon. Olusegun Onilude, said the decision to support the governor for the second term was borne out of his laudable achievements to transform the state from a mega city to a smart city through infrastructural developments within  three years.

He said these glaring and unprecedented achievements spurred the people of the local government area to work for the victory of Mr. Ambode in the 2019 governorship election in the state to further deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the Badagry division and the state at large.

“Your heavy investment in the effective community policing of the state through the Neighbourhood Watch programme, provision of health care facilities across the state, well-designed employment and empowerment programmes to engage the populace and your concern for a clear and healthy environment were strong encouragements for your endorsement.

“For us in Badagry, your endorsement is triggered by the genuine concern and interest you have shown in our growth and economic development through the construction of the 500- seater Cinema Hall at Hospital Road, Badagry, the exploration activities of Aje Oil, the Badagry Deep Seaport project, the free trade zone project, the ECOWAS market project, the development of our tourism potential and above all, your kind gesture of upgrading some of our traditional rulers in Ajara as Aholus,” Onilude said.

In his own speech, former Lagos State Head of Service and APC chieftain in Badagry, Mr. Sunny Ajose, said Governor Ambode had impacted positively on the lives of the people of the area within a short stay in office.

  • Buhari deserves second term

Sir: The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has made its mistakes and errors, especially in the politics of governing Nigeria. This is normal in a complex democracy with a president that is not a typical Nigerian politician. Nevertheless, Muhammadu Buhari deserves a second, because he has done quite well. To ask Buhari not to contest is an injustice to all Nigerians- they will be denied the opportunity to grade the Buhari/Osinbajo four years in power.

No administration in Nigeria from 1999-2015 has neared the achievements of the Buhari government within three years of its first term in office. The Buhari government has done very well in the two fundamental areas upon which it rode to power- neutralize Boko Haram’s senseless war and put a stop to official corruption. Though, there is room for improvement. There is not perfect government anywhere in the world.

The administration has also done excellently well in other areas including the economy. The biggest challenge for the government has been that most of its strides have been under-reported and not well publicized.

For a successful campaign for a second term, the Buhari government needs systematic and systemic approaches to propagate the president and his government’s activities. Buhari is an enigma – his ‘spirit’ has overshadowed everyone and everything in the government. So, for a seamless and smart publicity of what the Buhari/Osinbajo government is doing, what it has done, President Buhari should start visiting sites of ongoing and completed projects. This is will seamlessly hype the achievement of the government to the entire country

Very few Nigerians know that Nigeria’s foreign reserves have peaked at over $40b, the highest level in about four years, and up from $24 billion just a year ago. The nation is saving N24.7 billion monthly with the full implementation of the Treasury Single Account. The capital inflow is averaged US$1.8 billion. The Nigerian Stock Exchange has risen to 40,000 points for the first time since October 2014. The non-oil sectors exports are up 70% year-on-year and manufactured goods exports are up 22% year-on-year. Power generation is at an all-time high of 7,000mw from a mere 2,000mw. Twenty-five major highways across the six geo-political zones are being funded with the N100b Sukuk bond. The Lagos-Kano standard rail gauge is on. Lagos-Ibadan and Kano-Kaduna sectors will be ready in 2019. The entire stretch will be ready in year 2021 while negotiations are on for coastal rail covering 15 cities from Lagos to Calabar.

Despite these sterling performances of Buhari within three years in power, we cannot hide from this fact- Buhari is human; he has made mistakes as well as committed some political errors but they are correctable. We must also know that in a true democracy, no successful president ever spends only one term in office. Buhari deserves a second term.

    • Zayyad I. Muhammad,

     Jimeta, Adamawa State.
