  • Secure parliament…

Seek  ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” admonishes the scriptures in Matthew 6:33, “and all these things would be added unto you.”  That was the Christ Jesus telling the multitude to shun mammon, and glory in godly living.

If people’s faith is their way of life, then politics is the life of citizens in a democracy.  Even if you are not an active politician, you’re periodically being called to exercise your franchise by those politicians, for whom politics is a way of life.

Whatever your attitude, even more than the hyper-visible executive positions of president and governors, just know that securing the parliament is key.  If you did that, you just may have secured the political equivalent of the biblical kingdom of God, and frankly, you can expect every other thing to follow.

How so?  Ask All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.  He has been reported in the news, saying his ruling federal party would reward loyal party members in the National Assembly, and do away with opportunists and traitors.

Ha, Comarade Adams should know!  Since 2015, his party had endured a pair, at the helm of its parliamentary machine, who answer Dr. Jerkyl, representing APC during the day; but no less zealously, answer Mr. Hyde of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at night.

The duo of Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara ensured a slowdown, if not outright sabotage, of legislative backing for President Muhammadu Buhari’s programmes — in delayed budgets, padded budgets, rogue bills forged to ensure own selfish interests, threat to abandon parliamentary confirmation duties as rogue protest, sundry cynical filibustering and allied parliamentary rascality, that tend to de-market the government in which they both served.

The latest phase of that enemy-in-the-house-war-of-attrition took off when Saraki announced senatorial defections to the opposition, hoping to build a new rogue majority that would still retain him as senate president, even in PDP colours!  Talking of Mr. Hyde finally coming out in the open!  Since that backfired, it’s been parliamentary shutdown — maybe until new stratagems are forged?

Dogara has, more or less, pranced in Saraki’s wide and merry way.  As he has crossed over to PDP, he stands degraded, by the standing numbers, as a minority lawmaker.  Yet, he holds on as “Speaker”.  Well, the bastion of this 8th National Assembly is hardly honour!

Hardball’s concern is not parliamentary personalities per se.  Politicians of several hues would still be politicians and would play politics — euphemism for cynical opportunism, if they can get away with it.

Hardball is rather concerned with getting the people a good deal.  That is what the 8th National Assembly, under the duo of Saraki and Dogara, are not doing.

That is why, as we build up to another bout of elections, the parties must ensure that, whoever their candidates are, they are not just another band of opportunists, who would feed fat, mouth cant but leave the people’s job undone.

Which is why it is imperative to secure the parliament.  It starts, first with the parties to present their best minds — diligent, honest, industrious and loyal to their party’s programmes.  Then, the stage moves on for the people to choose right.

Those done, there would be assurance that both the executive and legislature are on the same page, double-charged to delivering a renascent Nigeria, where the people come first, and not the antics and whims decadent leaders, no more than vicious power dealers.

  • Activists secure freedom for indigent detainees

An Abuja-based rights advocacy group, Stand for Rights Initiative (SRI), has, within the last five months, secured the release of about six indigent detainees held in various prisons, on criminal charges, on free legal services basis (pro bono).

The latest of such detainees is 25-year-old Babangida Usman, who was arrested in April by policemen where he was hawking sachet water around Nyanya, Abuja.

He was initially detained at the Nyanya police station and was later transferred to Keffi prison in Nasarawa State after he was taken before the Chief Magistrate Court, Karu, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), accused of “indecent exposure,” in a charge marked; CR/02/2018.

Executive Director and head of SRi, Sunday Essienekak said when the Usman’s case was brought to his group’s notice, it found that “Babangida was brought to the court by the state and abandoned him’’.

“He was remanded in custody, and for several times, the prosecution did not show up in court. So we applied for his case to be struck out and Chief Magistrate O. Oyeyipo agreed with us and struck out the case and order his release on June 13 this year for want of prosecution.”

Essienekak also cited the case of Bello Waziri, who was arrested on November 20, 2015, for armed robbery and caused harm. Waziri was detained by the police until he was taken before Justice R. G. Soji of the High Court of Nasarawa State on December 12, 2016.

“We found that since his arrest, detention and arraignment, the state did not call any witness. The prosecution said the police failed to release the case file. Justice Soji was later transferred and when a new judge was brought, the prosecution still failed to call its witnesses.

“After spending three years in prison without trial, Justice H. M. Kabir, upon our application, discharged him on May 16, 2018 for want of diligent prosecution.

Another lucky beneficiary of the pro bono legal services of SRi is 25-year old Joseph Daniel, who was arrested by the police in 2017 in Karu where he worked as a night guard in a bar. His female employer had complained to the police that he stole her gas cylinder.

He was later remanded in  Keffi prison after his arraignment because no one came forward to take him on bail.

Essienekak said: “When we came into the case, we made a no-case submission after the prosecution closed its case. The trial Magistrate at the Karu Magistrate Court agreed with us and held that the prosecution failed to make out a prima facie case against Daniel to warrant him being called to enter defence.   The magistrate discharged and acquitted him on February 2, 2018.”

Other cases are those of EffiongArchibong, Edwin Atsu and Julius Magaji. Magaji was kept in Keffi prison from 2015 on charges of armed robbery in a charge marked; NSD/LF/10c/2016. Upon the involvement of SRi,Magaji was discharged and acquittedon May 28, 2018 by Justice H. M. Kabir of the High Court on Nasarawa State for lack of diligent prosecution.

Essienekak, who said he is motivated by the zeal to ensure access to justice and protection of human rights for all, particularly the poor, explained that his group has, since its incorporation in 2011 provided a wide range of pro bono legal services to over 300 indigent citizens.

  • NDDC’ll be safe, secure under Buhari, says ex-Board member

NDDC’ll be safe, secure under Buhari, says ex-Board member

former representative of Ondo State on the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr Benson Enikuomehin, has faulted insinuations that the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) would scrap the Commission if elected next month.

Enikuomehin, who is a chieftain of the APC in the Sunshine State, described those behind the rumours  as enemies of the nation.

Besides, another community leader from the oil producing areas of the state, Claudius Omogbemi said Buhari’s antecedents in the petroleum sector had exposed him to the importance and relevance of the NDDC to the South and Nigeria.

The duo said Buhari’s experience as a former Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) in 1995 Chairman, a Federal Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources in 1977and Chairman, Nigeria National Petroleum Commission (NNPC) in 1975 and 1995 would assist him to restructure and sustain the Commission.

Enikuomehin and Omogbemi however condemned what they called the domination of the Commission by mediocre, who have bastardised the agency to the detriment of the people and its objectives.

According to them, the alleged plot by Buhari to scrap the commission was politically motivated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to discredit the APC presidential candidate and block his victory in the Niger Delta at the presidential election.

They said the existence of the NDDC was the only consolation people in the region have on the devastation of their domain.

They expressed the hope that Buhari would apply the fund accruable to the Commission judiciously to develop the region and empower the people physically and economically.

The duo cautioned members of President Goodluck Jonathan campaign organisation to refrain from the campaign of calumny against the opposition, urging them to base their campaign on issues and avoid attacks of individuals.

Enikuomehin specifically advised Buhari to overhaul the commission and inject new blood into it, rather than scrapping it as doing so will do more harm to the people in the region.

  • El-Kanemi camp secure, says Bala

    El-Kanemi camp secure, says Bala

The Director of Media a t El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club of Maiduguri, Tahiru Bala has debunked a media report that key players of the club are planning to quit over incessant security challenges and poor welfare.

Bala said the management is doing everything humanly possible to give players the best in terms of security and welfare.

“It is rather unfortunate that one or two bad eggs in our team is mudslinging the good name of the club by saying what is not happening in Maiduguri. El-Kanemi is one team in Nigeria that pays salaries promptly that is why I get my salary as a civil servant on the 23rd of every month. Players of El-Kanemi Warriors also get their salaries. Our players are not leaving us as speculated and they are not in fear or like prisoners as wrongly reported,” Bala begins.

“Our camp is one of the best in the country and is located at the G.R.A. (Government Reserved Area) which is fenced and secured with security men around. Above all there was no attack on Maiduguri City not to talk of (sic) our camp that is in a secured and reserved area.

“The insurgency is in the southern part of the state that is where attacks occurred not in Maiduguri were our camp is located. Our youth vigilance group aka Civilian JTF have successfully forced all of them out of Maiduguri and since then the city became a no-go area to Boko Haram and life is going on normal in Maiduguri.

“So, I wonder which attack he (the reporter of the story) is saying. If a player is leaving us, he should leave but not spoil the good name made by great players like Samson Siasia, Rowland Ewere, Manu Garba and a lot of others in those days. Those players in question should please quietly leave than giving the club a bad name; soldier go soldier come barrack still remains. We want to use this medium to inform the media to always crosscheck their facts and balance their stories,” the director concluded.

  • How to secure Chibok girls release, by ICT expert

The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has faulted the  the Federal Government’s strategy in combating insurgents. The government, it said, has failed to utilise information communication technology (ICT) tools to fight the its surgents.

NCS President Prof David Adewumi said satellite technology and geographical mapping of areas the insurgents laid siege could  secure the release of the over 200 abducted Chibok school girls.

He said what should have been done had been left undone by the government.

Adewunmi said: “When you talk about satellite technology, it can be used to find out or locate or co-locate objects in very long distance. There is the Sat 3 that is in orbit. This satellite facility is not being fully utilised because it has the capacity to locate to the minutest details where ever those insurgents might be in the forest. It can also be used for agric purpose.

“One thing that is clear is that we have not deployed enough technology to fight insecurity in the country.”

Adewumi who spoke with The Nation said there is need for accurate data gathering in the country because if the available data is not dependable, it will not yield any positive results.

According to him, the entire Sambisa Forest in Bornu State where the insurgents have been operating from could also be mapped for computer simulation. “The Sambisa Forest, as large as it may be, could be mapped and simulated using computer simulation technology. The NCS therefore recommends the immediate and appropriate use of ICT tools to tackle the insecurity in the land. Federal Government must as a matter of priority establish a National Biometric Database Programme. There is a need to address and extract functional information from the present databases maintained by Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Police, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the banks and others. Furthermore, other ICT devices such as surveillance cameras, social network analysis, biometric surveillance data mining, satellite imagery, internet protocol (IP) devices should be employed professionally to checkmate insecurity in the country.

“With the highest professional regard, NCS is ready and willing to partner with the Federal Government to actualise this.”

The president recalled that after the September 11 terrorists’ attacks on the twin-towers of the World Trade Centre in the United States (US), no such attacks has been successful in that country because the government has deployed technology tools massively to prevent a re-occurrence.

“Government has not lived up to its responsibility of funding the development of the ICT sector in the country by providing the basic infrastructure. There are quite a number of ICT facilities that are supposed to be used even by local government areas and state government. There is need to deploy the simplest technology such as the Wireless Hidden Surveillance Camera. I don’t think government is deploying enough of ICT tools to tackle the security challenges in the country,” Prof Adewumi said.
