  • Call security agencies to order, Atiku urges Buhari

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said last night that he was disturbed by the alleged threat to the life of his erstwhile boss,Chief Olusegun Obasanjo,by agents of the federal government.

Abubakar,in a statement, said he was disturbed by “this turn of events in our dear country considering the huge price that was paid for us to have democracy.”

He asked government and its agents to “retrace their steps to avoid aggravating the already over heated polity.”

He added: “The alert by President Obasanjo is coming against the backdrop of earlier alerts by some leaders, especially those of the opposition of deliberate and orchestrated attempt to intimidate and frame them up.

“I wish to state without equivocation that President Obasanjo is a historical figure in Nigeria’s democracy and that the primary purpose of government is to provide security of lives and property of all citizens and residents irrespective of their status, political affiliation, religious inclination and ethnic leanings.

“Our nation has lost so much precious lives and property that we can no longer afford to travel that road again.

“I wish to appeal to President Buhari to call the security agencies to order in order to douse the tension in the land.”

  • Can warns inec, security agencies against rigging Ekiti poll

The Ekiti State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies against rigging.

The umbrella Christian body urged the electoral umpire and security agencies, including the Police, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to be neutral in the discharge of their duties at the poll.

The group warned that the sanctity of the ballots should be respected for Ekiti to be politically stable, develop and progress in all ramifications.

These are some of the resolutions contained in the communiqué at the end of its plenary meeting held at First Baptist Church, Odo Ayedun in Ikole Local Government Area.

The communiqué was jointly signed by Ekiti CAN Chairman, Rev. Joshua Orikogbe and Secretary, Rev. Ipinlaye Samuel.

On the Ekiti poll, CAN said: “We implore INEC and security agencies to be neutral and independent and create conducive atmosphere for free, fair and credible election.

“We call on all Christians to go out and vote for candidates of their choice without fear or intimidation. We also appeal to losers to embrace the winner and equally strive to abide by the rules of elections.”

The body also mourned the deaths of the CAN General Secretary, Dr Musa Asake, and the General Overseer of the Chapel of His Glory in Ekiti, Rev. Kunle Salami.

  • Buhari to security agencies, others: ensure safety of our kids

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has urged security agencies, families, traditional and religious leaders to  rise up and take decisive actions to stem rising cases of violence against children.

He made the call in a message to mark this year’s National Children’s Day on Saturday in Abuja.

Buhari noted that the theme for this year’s celebration, “Creating safe spaces for children: Our collective responsibility”, was an opportunity to promote the safety and security of the children.

He said stakeholders, including the civil society organisations, human rights activists and the society must ensure safety of the children in homes, schools, markets, worship centres, on the streets and everywhere at all times.

According to him, this year’s event affords him another opportunity to re-affirm his administration’s commitment to the protection of children.

The President said: “This is a day to reflect on our roles and responsibilities as parents and leaders towards our children, and also assessing how far we have fared in this regard.

“As you may recall, one of the cardinal objectives of this administration is the provision of quality education to our children as a fundamental foundation of economic and social development.

“In this regard, I am pleased to inform you that this administration has recorded measurable success in the home-grown school feeding programme as it has continued to expand.”

The president maintained children were the future of the nation, and “the initiatives that come from them give confidence that Nigeria has a bright future.

Buhari said: “I am very impressed by what our children have been able to do, and what the future holds for them.

“That is one reason why we are committed to the school feeding programme, to prepare a future generation of physically and intellectually robust children.”

He said at the last count, over 8.2 million children in 24 states were being given free meals daily, adding that this happened in 45,000 schools nationwide.

The President, therefore, called on stakeholders to support the programme to ensure that all the 36 states and FCT were covered.

This, he noted, would promote substantially higher enrolment levels in schools across the country.

He also appealed to parents not to relent in their efforts to send their wards to school, especially the girl-child “as her education reduces infant and maternal mortality as well as prevents child marriages.

“It also increases literacy and reduces poverty. The saying that to educate a woman is to educate the nation is very apt in this regard.”

Buhari noted that since the inception of his administration in May, 2015, the Federal Government had also focused attention on addressing issues of child protection, participation and survival.

He observed that in 2015, the campaign to end violence against children was inaugurated which was commemorated in 2016.

He reassured that his administration was committed to ensuring that children were protected from violence and all forms of exploitations.

The President said the government would guarantee friendly environments for the children to enable them pursue their educational attainments, discover their full potentials to grow into responsible citizens.

  • Presidency faults Amnesty report on security agencies

The Presidency on Wednesday faulted the recent report released by the Amnesty International alleging human rights violation by Nigerian security agencies.

According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, the report is inherently battling with credibility, falling vehemently short of evidential narration.

He said “It is short on credibility because it does not contain factual leads that could have laid the foundation for investigative actions.

“Findings are attributed to people but proper description of such people constituting the source of information is not provided.

“Engagement was claimed to have been made with Nigerian authorities but which authority is it, is not provided with clarity. This then is just a wild goose chase report, in essence.

“In some breath, the report seemed like the one in 2015, and the one in 2016, and the one after that year, the same things being recycled again and again.

“It ignores the fact of the existing mechanisms put in place by the military, as a self-correcting step and the high-level committee constituted by the Presidency to examine any such claims.

“Over this period of time, the Nigerian military had indeed established cases of abuse and punishments meted out from Orderly Room trials and Court Martials that resulted in losses of rank, dismissals, and trials and convictions by civil courts.

“Indeed as President Buhari said during his recent joint press conference with President Trump at the White House: “the government of Nigeria remains deeply committed to the principles of human rights, as well as promotion and protection of people’s freedom, even in the process of fighting terror. We commit to ensure that all documented cases of human rights abuses are investigated, and those responsible for violation held responsible.

  • NBA challenges security agencies on peaceful election

    •Police underpaid, says Ekiti cj

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ado-Ekiti Branch, has urged security agencies to ensure safety of lives and property before, during and after the July 14 governorship poll in Ekiti State. Ado-Ekiti NBA Chairman, Mr. Gbemiga Adaramola, made the call while addressing a press conference to mark the commencement of the 8th Annual Law Week of the association.

The theme for this year’s Ado-Ekiti NBA Law Week is: “Insecurity in Nigeria’s Stunted Metamorphosis to Greatness.”

Those that will be honoured at the weeklong event are Justice Bamidele Omotoso, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, Chief Ibuoye Gbadebo and Mr. Oluwadare  Oluwatayo. They will receive the prestigious eminent lawyers’ awards by NBA National

    President, A.B. Mahmoud.

Adaramola called for strong legal frameworks on how insurgents can be tackled, describing terrorism as a serious danger to peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

The NBA boss noted that, although Ekiti is a peaceful state, the security agencies should ensure that there is no breach of peace as the governorship poll approaches.

Adaramola said: “I have the belief that security agencies are up to the task. For the past four years, there is relative peace in Ekiti State.

“I believe that security agencies like the Police, DSS and NSCDC have the capacity to curtail any uprising. Ekiti is peaceful and we believe that this will be maintained during the election.”

In his keynote address, the Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, lamented that policemen in Nigeria are underpaid which affects their morale to tackle security challenges.

According to him, insecurity of life will deny the country of investment and retard its development.

He said: “Any nation that lacks adequate security of lives and property will remain undeveloped and will forever struggling to make any meaningful impact in the comity of nations.

“Insecurity is a major disincentive to foreign investments which a developing country like ours seriously needs to quicken its growth.”

  • Security agencies and herdsmen attacks

Sir: The nation was again thrown into another round of mourning with last week’s killings in Benue State. What is really happening in this country? Are the herdsmen better equipped and more trained than our security forces? What makes it difficult for the police and other security agencies to apprehend, arrest and prosecute the killer herdsmen? Are there official backing or cover up for the nefarious activities of these people? These and many more questions remain unanswered.

Without prejudice, the nation’s security system has functioned far below standards and this is evidenced in the incapability to fight crime and defend the territorial integrity of the nation. With the upsurge in the activities of criminals, many people are no longer sleeping with their two eyes closed due to the inability of our security agencies to discharge out their duties efficiently and effectively. On a number of occasions, those attacked have prior knowledge of the invasions, but when alarms are raised and reports given to security forces, nothing much is done to prevent the onslaught. This has been the experience of invaded villages that got prior information on the impending attacks and law enforcement agents were unable to salvage the situation. Following the massacres in Benue earlier in the year, it was reported that terror groups had established cells in the Middle Belt and South-south areas of the country. Are we not tending towards becoming a failed state?

What we have presently are stunted police and other security forces that are insufficiently kitted to face the superior powers of terrorists and insurgents that are better funded to unleash havoc on the Nigerian people. This unfortunate situation cannot continue, if the nation claims to truly exist as a sovereign state. Or, of what use is a state that merely exists on paper without the ability, capacity and capability to defend its people and territory from internal and external aggression? The inability of the government to take decisive action against lawlessness continues to embolden the herdsmen, to commit more atrocities against their fellow citizens.

No doubt, the time has come for the federal government to demonstrate true leadership and take decisive action to end the menace without further delay. It is shameful that such attacks are taking place without our security agencies stopping them.

Ranching of cattle is the way to go to modernise and boost cattle rearing in any civilised society. The insistence of herdsmen on open grazing of their cattle on the farms is an open invitation to anarchy that is playing out now. Security agencies should rise up and protect all Nigerians, wherever they may be and not only in Benue State, as the deadly herdsmen are far spreading across the land.

  • Assembly to meet Emmanuel, security agencies on crisis

The leadership of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly is to meet with Governor Udom Emmanuel and heads of security agencies to seek a solution to challenges in Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo local government areas.

This was part of resolutions passed by the Assembly yesterday following a matter of urgent public importance raised by the member representing Ukanafun, Otobong Jonathan.

Members urged the government to ameliorate the suffering and mitigate losses incurred by the people.

Pleading with his colleagues to draw government’s attention to the destruction by criminals in his constituency, Jonathan told members that his council was engulfed in a protracted crisis, which affected its economic activities.

He cited a recent attack on a popular market in Ukanafun, Urua Akpan Eshiet by hoodlums, who reportedly stormed the market and set the building on fire.

“Ukanafun is plagued with security challenges. Hoodlums recently invaded the area and burnt down Urua Akpan Eshiet market. That market is a major source of livelihood and  revenue to our local government”.

Speaker Onofiok Luke commended Jonathan for raising the matter.

“We didn’t delay because of the nature of the matter. We had to give it the seriousness it deserves. We pledge our commitment to cooperate with the governor and security agencies to ensure the security of life and property of residents”.

  • Buhari to security agencies: Wipe out criminality

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday in Gusau, Zamfara State, directed security agencies to improve their strategies of intelligence gathering, surveillance and accuracy in deployments, and ensure that criminal activities are brought to an end across the country.

Accompanied by Governor Abdul’aziz Yari, in an interactive meeting with political leaders, traditional rulers, elders and victims of criminal attacks in Zamfara State, President Buhari assured all security agencies of improved conditions that will facilitate apprehending criminals that steal, maim and kill innocent Nigerians.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, said “As far as I am concerned, our security agencies have recorded some successes, but they need to do much more.

“They are not to oppress anyone, but they have to gather and send intelligence and warnings when something is about to happen,’’ he said.

The President commended the security agencies for eliminating a dreadful criminal, “Buhari general’’, who had for many years initiated killings and destruction of properties.

“Before “Buharin-daji”, who calls himself a general, there was a criminal who killed many people and he was killed; “Buharin–daji’’ has followed him and others like them should also follow,’’ he added.

President Buhari said the threats to lives and properties will be significantly reduced with improved relations among community leaders, citizens and the security agencies.

He said “I have come here to commiserate with you over loss of lives and properties. We will continue to do our best to improve the security situation. However, those committing atrocities live with you.

“Some of these people are not reported because you don’t trust the security outfits, instead you report back to the criminals. We should give priority to security’’ he said.

The President warned that the ongoing war against corruption will be reinvigorated and sustained until public officers, who abused their positions, faced the wrath of the law.

He told the elders and traditional rulers that properties that had been confiscated by security outfits from some suspected corrupt public officials will be sold out, after the completion of court procedures.

He urged Nigerians to take advantage of the ongoing reforms in the agricultural sector, pointing that the era of depending on petrol will one day come to an end.

On herdsmen attacks, the President said there was a need to revisit and review the old grazing area arrangements that guaranteed harmonious relationship between farmers and herdsmen, where differences were amicably resolved through the law without violence.

In his remarks, Governor Yari, who is also the Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum, said the state government had deployed resources that were initially designated for development into fighting criminal activities.

The governor, who commended the security outfits for working hard to protect the state, pleaded with the Federal Government to improve the funding of operations, increase the number of security men working in the state and reimburse the state for monies spent on some Federal Government projects like roads, which he said was a major priority in fighting  criminals.

In his presentation, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Abdullahi Shinkafi, said the state faced three major criminal challenges of cattle rustling, armed banditry and abductions and demand for ransoms.

Listing out eight major flashpoints, the Secretary to the Government said 1,321 lives had been lost since 2011, while 1,881 people sustained various injuries from attacks, with about N14 billion spent on fighting the menace.

The traditional rulers, elders and leaders of the affected communities also pleaded with the government to ensure immediate security intervention in order to save lives.

  • Zamfara killings: Commissioner blames security agencies

The Zamfara State Commissioner for Commerce, Industries and Investment, Ahmed Maradun, has blamed security agencies for the worsening security situation in the state.

Maradun spoke when the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Security Infrastructure visited Zamfara.

A committee member said Maradun spoke when the committee visit the Emir of Maradun.

Maradun said: “The Federal Government ordered these security agencies to protect the people. The governor, as the chief security officer, is also empowered to give them orders, but when they refuse to take such orders what should he do?

“Let me go personal with you, there was a time the security agencies were told there would be an attack on one community but despite the tip off, none of them made attempts to counter that attack; so many people were killed.

“Also, you would have learnt that the President ordered the deployment of some of them. If you must know, they are just there and their presence is not felt. Whenever you give them information about an attack, they always reply that they have not received any order and cannot act. In fact, I think there may be a deliberate plot by these security agencies to undermine the powers of the President.

“Then again, they talk about not having personnel and equipment, but they have enough to deploy in Benue State because they have the loudest voice; they have enough to deploy in the Niger Delta because there is oil there? I don’t believe in that.

“As far as I know, the state government is spending a lot on security. Then if you know you cannot guarantee the protection of life and property, why do you take our money and why do you continue to take it.

“Why do they take our money if they cannot do anything? I think they should return our money.”

  • Lagos donates 30 power bikes to security agencies

Lagos donates 30 power bikes to security agencies

The Lagos State Government yesterday donated 30 power bikes to some security agencies operating in the state.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said at the handing-over of the bikes at the Lagos House, Ikeja, that the gesture was in line with the government’s commitment to boost security and enhance safety of lives and property.

He said the donation of the bikes was in fulfilment of his promise to prioritise the security of residents and ensure that no stone was left unturned to protect the people of the state.

Ambode, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, said security, being one of the tripods upon which his administration was built, would continue to be accorded its pride of place.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the power bikes were funded by the Lagos State Lotteries Board and donated to the Police Command in the State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were also beneficiaries.

Ambode said the power bikes would enhance the job of the security agencies of securing lives and property of residents.

Earlier, the Chairman, Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Mr Oye Hassan-Odukale, commended Ambode for the donation, saying it came barely two months after he promised to procure more bikes for security agencies.

Hassan-Odukale said the bikes would go a long way in preventing crimes, enhancing security and ensuring residents’ safety.

He expressed optimism that the equipment would be put into good use.

Hassan-Odukale called on corporate bodies and public-spirited individuals to team up with the government to procure more equipment for security agencies in the overall interest of the people.

Receiving the power bikes on behalf of security agencies, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, commended the State Government for the gesture.

Edgal said the bikes would greatly help security personnel to pursue criminals, especially those operating in traffic.

“Power bikes are essential for hot pursuits of criminals. Power bikes in line with the visibility clause in community policing also establishes police and other agencies’ visibilities on our streets and highways.

“That is how important these power bikes are in fighting crime in Lagos and I want to assure the governor and the good people of Lagos that we will put the bikes to good use,” the police chief said.

In their separate remarks, LASTMA General Manager Olawale Musa, his LASEMA counterpart, Mr Adeshina Tiamiyu and the Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Olatunji Disu lauded the government’s initiative.

They also expressed optimism that the bikes would help to prevent and to fight crime in emergency situations.
