Food is a fundamental necessity for human survival, and its safety is crucial for maintaining public health and well-being.
This was the opening line as Barrister Adebayo Akinade, DG Institute of Security Nigeria delivered a paper titled: Combating Threats to Wellness, Safety And Food Security For Healthy Living at recent workshop organised by Sport Writers’ Association Of Nigeria (Swan), Lagos Chapter in commemoration of this year’s World Nutrition Month.
Speaking at the event which held at the Rahman Bello Lecture Theatre, University of Lagos, Akinade however noted that an increasing complexity of the global food system has created new vulnerabilities to threats such as food terrorism, contamination, and other malicious acts.

He also noted that food poisoning and contamination remain significant threats to human health, particularly in developing countries.
“The consumption of contaminated or spoiled food can lead to severe health consequences, including hospitalization and even death. In addition to the health impacts, food poisoning and contamination can also have economic and social implications, affecting businesses, communities, and entire nations,” he said.
