  • Biafra: Uwazuruike, Mustapha, Fasheun, Bianca seek non-violent agitation

Biafra: Uwazuruike, Mustapha, Fasheun, Bianca seek non-violent agitation

Chief Security Officer (CSO) to former Head of State Mohammed Abacha Hamza Al’Mustapha; leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) Ralph Uwazuruike; founder of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Chief Fredrick Fasheun and wife of the late Dim Emeka Odimegwu Ojukwu Bianca Ojukwu have called for a non-violent agitation.

They spoke during the Odimegwu Ojukwu Anniversary at the Ojukwu Library in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

According to them, the issues that led to the civil war were yet to be addressed by successive governments, thereby paving the way for agitation for self-determination.

Fasheun observed that for Nigeria to continue as one, there was urgent need to convene a Sovereign National Conference, which will address mistrust and marginalisation of zones, and implement its report.

He said: “I have come to give solidarity to MASSOB from the Southwest. The agitation for self-determination will not cease but I encourage MASSOB’s non-violent approach because if we had wanted to tear this country apart, we should have adopted what Ojukwu did.

“I thank Uwazuruike for what he is doing. I love it that you have gone this far without shedding blood. I am urging Biafra to sustain the agitation because Ojukwu is part of the music of this country and whoever’s name is music never dies.”

Mustapha, who was the special guest, noted that the marginalisation of the poor by the privileged few and inept leadership gave room for the agitation sweeping through the country.

He said: “In Nigeria, there are people who have attained high places but are totally deformed, both in intellect and capacity. What is missing in Nigeria is the unity of purpose. We have not been able to come together as a people under one vision; no one has given thought about the future of our nation except thoughts about ourselves.

“There are issues about the civil war that are yet to be addressed, such as the causes of the war, who incited it from within and outside the country, and who exploited the situation, and until this is done, the war will not be forgotten.

“In the pursuit of the right of a man, there is no force that can stop him so I have solidarity for MASSOB, but the unity of the country is of essence because we are brought here by God for a purpose.”

Uwazuruike vowed to continue with the agitation until the issues that gave rise to the civil war were addressed.

He, however, said MASSOB would sustain its non-violent posture, adding that those calling for war want to drag the struggle into disrepute.

“We started MASSOB in 1999 when no Igbo man had occupied any of these positions  since the civil war-President, Inspector General of Police, Chief of Air Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Minister of Defense, Minister of Internal Affairs, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, among others. But 16 years after, through MASSOB’s non-violent agitation, Ndigbo have occupied these positions, except the Presidency.

“Today, Ndigbo in their usual character, want to decimate MASSOB so that they can emerge as the new champions. They believe that they could achieve Biafra through violence and they are threatening brimstone and fire but they don’t even have the capacity to carry out their empty threats.

“Notwithstanding, we urge the authorities to ignore their empty threats. If any group should be feared in Nigeria, it is MASSOB because we are knowledgeable and knowledge is power.

“The so-called Radio Biafra, London, was opened by MASSOB to showcase the marginalisation of Ndigbo and Nnamdi Kanu was appointed director but he used the radio to propagate news against the ideals and objectives of the struggle and to attack the leadership.

“We, therefore, urge the relevant authorities to release unconditionally all those held for propagating Biafra, both members of IPOB and the Zionist Movement. I believe they will never toe the line of violence again, if they are released.”

  • Southsouth women seek peaceful poll

Southsouth women, under the aegis of the Concerned Women from the Southsouth, have urged Bayelsa State electorate to ensure peace before, during and after the December 5 governorship election.

They hailed the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva, for displaying maturity.

The women praised the non-violent approach of the governorship candidates, especially Sylva and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Seriake Dickson.

The Concerned Women, comprising politicians and community leaders from the Southsouth, yesterday issued a communiqué at the end of their meeting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

They said women should always be given a pride of place in Nigeria.

The communiqué was signed by Dame Maureen Tamuno, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, Esther Etuk, Victoria Nyeche, Mrs. Irene Inimgba, Alice Ekpenyong and seven others.

The communiqué reads: “The meeting calls for a peaceful election in Bayelsa State and commends the non-violent approach of the candidates. It, however, notes with concern the attack on APC’s candidate (Sylva) and his followers during the Operation Clean-up Bayelsa Initiative.

“The meeting especially commends Chief Timipre Sylva for his maturity and peaceful disposition to the conduct of his campaigns.

“The meeting rose with a resolve to steadfastly promote the advancement of women in every sphere and encourage the inclusion of more women in decision-making as no nation can make progress without the involvement of more than half of its population.”

The Concerned Women expressed delight on the victory of APC’s governorship candidate in Taraba State and minister-designate, Senator Aisha Alhassan, at the election petitions tribunal.

Alhassan, according to the women, would be the first elected woman governor in Nigeria, despite the decision of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate and Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku to appeal the judgment.

The women hailed Alhassan for her tenacity and doggedness in the face of daunting challenges.

They urged her to continue to be a beacon of hope for Nigerian women.

  • Farmers seek new credit policy for agriculture

LAGOS State Federated FADAMA Community Association president, Alhaji Abiodun Oyenekan, has urged the Federal Government to evolve a new credit policy that will contribute to agricultural restructuring and boost food production.

Oyenekan asked that farmers access to finance be improved to enable them buy agricultural machinery to increase their productivity and incomes.

According to him, many smallholder farmers do not have access to modern agricultural machinery that can help increase their productivity and improve both food security and incomes.

This is because they can’t afford new tractors. Without access to credit, he said they often have no choice but to continue farming without the benefit of modern equipment. He noted, however, that credit for agriculture is still facing difficulties, such as high interest rates and strict loan approaches.

Right now, he explained that loans given by banks are not single digits and tend to be too expensive for rural smallholders to take advantage of financing, and they can rarely meet the rigid collateral requirements or pay back the loan within the typical short-term lending periods.

Oyenekan said credit  for agriculture still faces difficulties, such as high interest rates and strict loan approaches. According  to him, restructuring the credit policy will lead to banks developing loans for agriculture, which include production and processing of agricultural products and processing and consumption, production of seeds in crop, livestock, fisheries, forests and supplying of products and services and lending for trade development in rural areas.

Besides, he said there should be support for partnership and application of high technology in agricultural production; increasing competitiveness to contribute to sustainable development of the agricultural sector and enhancing the living conditions of rural residents and contributing to implementation of the national target programme of new rural areas.

He said there are funding windows provided for farmers by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the World Bank to boost government’s efforts to expand agriculture sector while providing food security and improved nutrition to the rural poor.

For the agric sector to develop rapidly, he said the economy must support it’s demand for credit and expand business operation towards modernisation.

  • Eagles seek redemption

    Eagles seek redemption

Nigeria and Cameroon will renew their rivalry when the two sides meet in an international friendly at the Stade Edmond Machtens in Brussels tomorrow.

The Super Eagles will be looking to redeem themselves after being humbled by DR Congo on Thursday night losing 2-0 to the Leopards.

It was a game characterised with a lot of lethargic play and a subdued performance that probably resonated from the squabbles in the team’s camp few days before the game.

Former captain Vincent Enyeama had a fall out with Oliseh and subsequently left the Eagles camp. A few hours later, he announced his international retirement.

The build up to the game had been chaotic from the start with players getting inured and Oliseh having to make do with a tiny squad as he opened camp due to the inability of some players to get entry visas to Belgium.

Cameroun on the other hand have a relatively quite time in Belgium preparing for the game as Volker Finke prepares his wards for the 2018 World Cup preliminary rounds with another eye on the 2017 Afcon qualifiers next year.

The Indomitable Lions defeated Belgian Jupiler Liga side KV Oostende 3-1 on Thursday night in a friendly game almost the same time Nigeria was pummelled by the DRC.

Nigerian striker Joseph Akpala scored for Oostende as early as the second minute but Cameroun scored three times through Vincent Aboubakar, Aurelin Chedjou and Clinton Njie to win the game.

Oliseh will have to get his charges ready to face a rampant Cameroun side who will be looking to do a number on Nigeria considering the much documented rivalry between the two sides.

The last time Nigeria and Cameroun met, it was a 2-1 victory for the Super Eagles as a Jay Jay Okocha inspired Eagles led Nigeria to a quarter final win over the Lions at the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia in 2004.

Nigeria will welcome the duo of Chima Akas and Austin Oboroakpo who weren’t involved in the first game because they got to Belgium late after being held up in Nigeria due to visa issues.

Cameroun will sweat over the fitness of Olympique Marseille defender Nik Nkoulou after he picked up a knock.

Key matchClinton Njie v Leon Balogun

This will be a very interesting battle as Njie’s pace is one his biggest asset and it will be a very big test for Balogun who was average against DR Congo on Thursday night.

Njie, who is with Tottenham Hotspur, was on target in Cameroun’s win against KV Oostende and will look for more against the Super Eagles.

He plays from the left side of midfield for Cameroun which will pit him directly against Balogun on match day if they both get to play.

    Ahmed Musa v Aurelin Chedjou

‘Air Nigeria’ as Ahmed Musa is popularly called will test his wits against Cameroun centre back Chedjou on match day. The Nigeria skipper was a shadow of himself against DR Congo and would want to make amends against Cameroun.

He is going to come up against a tough centre back who is good in the tackle and excellent aerially.

Musa’s pace will definitely be an issue for the Galatasaray defender who isn’t exactly the quickest defender out there.

    Redemption time?

Sunday Oliseh’s reign hasn’t exactly started off on a flyer. The former Borussia Dortmund player has played three games – winning one, losing one and drawing one.

His reign has been tumultuous to say the least and recent incidents in the teams camp have done nothing to douse frayed nerves among Nigerians.

Oliseh will seek redemption when his team files out against Cameroun on Sunday knowing a win will ease up the pressure from fans and boost team confidence .

Yet, another insipid performance, like the one against DR Congo, might just pump up the pressure and get Oliseh nearer to the sin bin.

  • Sharks seek Wikki’s fall in Port Harcourt

Sharks seek Wikki’s fall in Port Harcourt

Sharks FC head coach, Festus Allen has appealed to their fans and supporters not to judge them  by their present spot on the log adding that they are poised to take the maximum points against Wikki Tourists on Sunday in a Glo Premier League Week 33 tie.

The Blue Angels are 16th on the log with 36 points from 32 matches and are up against a Bauchi side third on the log with 54 points from 32 games and are in serious contention for the league title and a place on the continent.

Allen in an interview with SportingLife said that they would approach their tie with Wikki Tourists just like the way they had approached all their previous encounters this season and that as an ambitious side they would strive to pick three points.

The former 3SC and ABS coach, however, noted that they have been slowed down by the unavailability of their striker, Christian Pyagbara who has a back injury after a Dolphin player deliberately hit him at the back during the match. He has not started training since then.

Allen also opined that they won’t have their match winner against Dolphins, Chima Akas for the game with Wikki Tourists as he is presently in the Super Eagles’ camp.

Despite the unavailability of the duo, Allen told SportingLife that he has the right calibre of players that will do the team proud against Wikki Tourists and ease their drop zone worries.

“We are approaching the Wikki tie just like we had played all our previous matches and we are going with the mentality to win. We know they are a good side and for them to be in the top four means that they cannot be joked with at all. We know they are a good attacking side but they won’t escape defeat in Port Harcourt.

“We will not be with Chima Akas and Christian Pyagbara but we have other players that can step into their shoes and give us what we desire” Allen told SportingLife.

  • Investors seek partnership with Lagos

    Investors seek partnership with Lagos

A group of local and foreign investors yesterday met with the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode where they expressed their readiness to partner with the state government on infrastructural development.

The meeting held at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, had directors and team leaders of top multinationals in attendance including Julius Berger, JP Morgan, Wested Group, Contraco Nigeria, among others.

Director of Julius Berger, Mutiu Sunmonu, who spoke with reporters shortly after the meeting, said the session with the governor was fruitful, just as he expressed optimism that it would go a long way to define the way the state government intends to go in boosting its economy.

“I could say that the governor has very bold steps and very bold ideas for Lagos State. This interactive session has also opened the way for further discussions such that we can actualise some of the projects that we have discussed today. I think it’s really a thing of pride that His Excellency has opened his door for investors,” he said.

On his part, the Managing Director, Senior Country Officer for JP Morgan in Nigeria, Oluwatosin Adewuyi, commended the governor for convening the meeting, saying his company is excited to partner the state government in achieving its economic goals.

He added that it would go a long way to enhance the confidence of investors to put their money in projects that would improve the lives of the citizenry.

“I’m very excited, some bold and creative plans and I believe that is actually what is required in the next decade in Lagos. It’s always refreshing to spend time with the Governor who understands financing, and he does. It was two hours well spent and its best for us to move Lagos forward.

“We’re a global bank and so, essentially our key skill set is to attract investors into countries and taking local companies out of Nigeria to raise capital and so from our perspective there’s a myriad of projects that need to be financed and that’s where we need to come in,” he said.

Leader of the team of investors, Pastor Idowu Iluyomade said both the state government and the local and international investors and banks are looking forward to a long term partnership that will be beneficial to the growth of the state.

In his remarks Ambode said the meeting was in line with his campaign promise to open the state for greater business as well as create enabling environment for investments to thrive.

He also assured that the state will witness substantial infrastructural development in the first four years of his administration.

He said: “What we have just done is to meet with a group of investors who have actually taken keen interest in what has been happening in Lagos in the last six weeks.

“We have business men and investors who are interested in our infrastructure, water, health and also power. Like I’ve always said, Lagos is going to greater heights, they have shown commitment this afternoon, they have also promised that the next four years, Lagos will be something totally different from what it used to be.

“We’ve had fruitful discussions; we’ve looked at areas where we can partner together and areas where they can actually even invest freely, because they have confidence in Lagos state and that’s why they’ve been able to demonstrate that Lagos is actually open for every other investor to come into.”

Governor Ambode said the state government has shown its capacity to become the hub of investment in Nigeria, just as he assured the investors of his commitment to ensure they get return on their investment.

“We’re committed. We’ve shown that we’re credible enough to be the hub of investment in Nigeria. We’ve also shown that we are going to be transparent and we are going to be credible and that we would obey the rule of law and ensure that investments are safe in Lagos.

“As you’ll see, we believe strongly that we want to grow the GDP of Lagos and create more jobs for our people and that’s the step we’ve taken today, we’ll take the right steps and the right decisions,” the governor said.

  • Town planners seek to ease site analysis reporting

The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) has prepared a template for land use and planning. Known as the Land Use Planning and Analysis Reporting (LUPAR) template, it will become operational next year.

To achieve this, the institute had chosen to test run the template across its 17th edition of the 2015 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme (MCPDP), the latest being the one  held last week in Ibadan.

Another held in June, in Port Harcourt, while the third is billed for next month. The theme of the seminars is “Development of a multi-user template for Land Use Planning and Analysis Reporting in Nigeria.”

The MCPDP is aimed at building consensus on the new template among the practitioners and to allow for inputs before the report will be presented at the institute’s annual general meeting in October.

According to the President of the institute, Dr Femi Olomola, LUPAR, is a new template conceived by the his administration as a novelty that seeks to expand the frontiers of Site Analysis Report (SAR) applications beyond the tradition of planning approvals.

The proposed report will also build on the existing SAR processes and procedures, as well as adding details of geographic references and further information relating to building types and conditions, title deeds, the local land use and development setting, and the permits granted on property.

The expanded areas of its application cut across various sectors of the economy many of which have direct relevance to the financial sector and regulatory agencies.

Importantly, the new format LUPAR, in addition to other benefits, can become a very useful and authentic instrument that supports applications for opening of corporate bank accounts; Bank loan processing; requests for Insurance cover; and incorporation/registration of new companies with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Besides, it will also address the traditional requirements of applications for building plan approval/permits; issuance of certificates of occupancies (C of O); potential value to security and regulatory agencies with oversight functions on crime and enforcement of standards among others.

Olomola, in his keynote address at the two-day of the MCPDP held at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, last week, said  about 13 different areas of the economy were identified where LUPAR would be useful.

The NITP boss noted that the Urban and Regional Planning Decree 88 of 1992 clearly defines the legal and institutional framework for Land Use Planning in Nigeria, regretted that the nation is yet to get the environment of ‘our dream’ till date.

Part of the reasons he adduced for this include, unavailability of tools needed for site visit, shortage of personnel, with less than 5,000 registered town planners in the country among other factors.

He said if the institute is to wait for governments to provide all that is needed to achieve the dream environment, it will impossible, hence the idea of the new template that is aimed to address some of the identified gaps.

Besides the advantages of the report he listed, he said the template will also provide close to five million jobs for town planners in the country.

Said he: “Between us and the next generation there is a contract. It is out sacred duty to create the enabling environment to make the young/upcoming ones be convinced that the moment you genuinely struggle/work hard and get your certificate of registration with NITP and TOPREC, you can nod your head in fulfilment that it is not only a passport to good living but also to a fortune.

“Against this background priority number one on their seven-point agenda is job creation. We had earlier on stated the objective of creation of at least five million units of jobs per annum for RTPs which is designed to provide the much needed bread and butter income for the profession.”

Chairman, MCPDP, Prof.  Adamu Ahmed, said the 17th edition was aimed at building capacity for members with special attention on the evaluation of one of the planning issues now, the site analysis report.

He said the MCPDP was also aimed at building consensus on the development of new template, LUPAR, as an advisory instrument for planning institution, financial agencies and other regulatory agencies.

Asked on the response from the previous one held in Port Harcourt, “There is a lot of excitement from Port Harcourt, people saw reasons for the new template and they are happy that something will be provided for hitherto neglected areas,” he said.

President, Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC), Prof. Layi Egunjobi, said the theme of the event was okay, adding that it is making site analysis report and planning more robust not only in scope but also in methodology and economic value.

Egunjobi said the role of continuing education in a professional’s life is so important that it cannot be over-stressed. “So important it is that it touches not only in developing skills for practical purposes, but also for intellectual upgrading for deeper insights and critical thinking,” he said.

Chairman, Oyo State chapter of NITP, Mr. Kola Lawal, said the theme of this year’s MCPDP reflected recognition of the power and importance of Land Use Planning and Analysis Reporting in sustainable use and development of Land.

He said the occasion is a veritable platform for stakeholders in the physical planning in Nigeria, to highlight, discuss and support the emerging concept of Land Use Planning and Analysis Reporting in developing countries.

“Land use planning as one important component of urban planning, can contribute significantly in addressing the major urban challenges if led by well-informed policies based on sustainable development principles and supported by well thought out and managed follow-up actions,” he said.

  • Health workers seek adequate funding for primary health care

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) has called on the Federal Government to ensure better funding and equipment of the primary health care system in the country.

Its immediate past President Ayuba Wabba spoke at the Ninth National Delegates Conference of MHWUN in Abuja.

Wabba, who is also the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said it was imperative for the primary health care system, which accounts for 70 per cent of Nigeria’s health care requirement to be given the necessary attention in the area of funding and equipment.

He said the infrastructure decay in the health sector should be tackled effectively through increased investment in health infrastructure, training and retraining in human resources, among others.

He lamented over the report that Nigerians spend N1trillion on medical treatments abroad annually. This, he said, further confirmed the poor state of health care delivery in the country.

“Perhaps it captures the state of decay of our health infrastructure that those who could afford it have been travelling out of the country at the slightest opportunity for medical treatment”, he said.

He said the medical workers had over the years consistently advocated for the country to come to terms with the level of decay in the nation’s health care system. He also advised the Federal Government to ensure the extension of universal health coverage to rural communities through the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Wabba, who praised the Federal Government for passing the National Health Bill into an Act, called for a holistic implementation of the Act through the establishment of Local Government Primary Health Care Authority and the State Health Care Development authorities across the country.

He said: “We have over the years consistently advocated that for us, as a country, to come to terms with the level of decay in our healthcare system, we need to go back to the basics and prioritise investment in health infrastructure, training and retraining of human resources and strive to attain set targets in the sector.

“For us in the union, it is important that as articulated in the National Health Policy Document, that primary healthcare which accounts for 70 per cent of the healthcare requirements of all Nigerians is adequately funded, properly equipped and staffed with trained professionals…”

He said after more than six years, the union is happy that the National Health Bill, which suffered many hiccups, has been finally signed into law by the President recently.

“It is our hope that with the law now in place, the incoming government will develop the will to implement the provisions of the Act,” he said.

  • CSOs seek immediate sack of NSA, security chiefs

CSOs seek immediate sack of NSA, security chiefs

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) under the aegis of Nigerians United for Democracy (NUD) yesterday called for the immediate sack of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to the President, Col. Sambo Dasuki.

The coalition also demanded that the Chief of Defence Staff (CODS), Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Chief of Air Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff should be relieved of their positions for stating they could not provide security for the general elections, which should have held yesterday.

Representative of the CSOs, Barrister Solomon Dalong, made the demands during a rally in Abuja by the pro-democratic movement.

Members of the movement protested from the unity fountain to the federal secretariat with inscriptions such as: “No more postponement, one man one vote”; “No to interim government”; “INEC must be independent”; “Power belongs to the people through democracy” and “No repeat of June 12,” among others.

Police and Department for State Security (DSS) operatives provided security for the protesters.

They alleged that the NSA had connived with the service chiefs by usurping the powers of the National Security Council and President Goodluck Jonathan whose responsibility was to protect lives and property.

Dalong said: “We condemn in strong terms the action of the NSA and the service chiefs. We find their threat not to provide security to INEC for the conduct of the elections as a blackmail and indeed a coup against an institution of Nigeria and the Nigerian people.

“The NSA does not have the constitutional mandate to advise INEC on security matters and it is not in his purview to guarantee the security of the nation.”

They protested that the elections should have been rescheduled only in the 14 local councils affected by terrorism, adding that the military may not guarantee security in the March and April polls.

The CSOs cautioned against further postponement of the elections.

They said Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Atahiru Jega, should be retained while Permanent Voters Card (PVC) and Card Readers should be made available to eligible voters.

The Director, Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Ms Hassan Idayat, said government should ensure the elections, saying the shift has affected the economy and Nigerians.

  • Catholic men seek credible polls

The Catholic Men Organisation of Nigeria (CMON) has charged Nigerians and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to work towards free and fair elections this month.

It also appealed to Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to be able to elect credible leaders.

The national president of the organisation, Dr Adedeji Adebajo, said Nigeria cannot afford anything less than credible polls.

He urged politicians to avoid inciting and inflammatory statements during campaigns while shunning the do-or-die attitude.

According to Adebajo: “All we are appealing for is proper election. In other parts of the world, election is the easiest thing but in Nigeria, it has been taken as more or less a do- or- die affair, which should not be.

“We are appealing to our politicians to be able to accept defeats and congratulate whosoever wins.

“We also appeal to these titans to please obey to the letter the peace accord they signed recently.”

He lamented that over 1.5 million Nigerians have been turned to refugees in the nation, charging the federal government to do everything humanly possible to win the ongoing war against terrorism.

“If only 12 men were killed in France and the entire world could stand for them, then what is happening in Nigeria?

“Apart from those killed by the insurgents, over 1.5 million Nigerians have been turned to refugees in their own country.

“We therefore appeal to the federal government to do whatever is necessary to bring the massacre of Boko Haram to an end.

“Our soldiers are known to be gallant in actions; they won lots of laurels maintaining peace in other countries.

“We want them to replicate the same in our country so that no part of Nigeria should be lost to any insurgent.”
