  • Anglican bishop attributes drugs use to absence of control measures

Retiring Archbishop of Kwara Province and Bishop of Kwara Diocese, Anglican Church, Segun Adeyemi has urged the Federal Government to ensure regulated access to drugs and chemicals to reduce the current prevalence abuse drugs among the youths.

He attributed the prevalence of drug addiction and abuse among youth in the country to unfettered access to drugs and alcohol in most parts of the country.

The medical doctor turned clergy, said that poverty among people must be addressed to check drug use, adding that some people would do anything to get money, even rituals, instead of living quality lifestyle.

He described Nigerian politicians as people of same family irrespective of their political leanings.

He said that people should not be fooled by personalities and different political parties in the country.

Bishop Adeyemi spoke with reporters in Ilorin at the weekend as part of activities to mark his retirement from office.

Dr. Adeyemi said that Nigerian politicians relate well among themselves behind closed doors.

The clergy, who said that most political office seekers are only interested in perpetuity of what they can get rather than providing dividends of democracy, added that many politicians use of money and charms, engage in electoral malpractices by conniving with INEC and police to assume position of authority.

“Don’t be fooled by different parties they say they belong. They meet themselves, where majority of their supporters won’t see them. What connects most of them is perpetuity of what they can get rather than what they can do to improve the society. However, every one should be reminded that judgement would come upon all our actions on earth. We need to come to sanity of Godliness because there will be no peace for every bad leader. Common wealth should be for common people. With all the wealth and acquisition, one will still die. So,  we should work with fear of God. I want Nigerians to believe that we can get it right with prayer. We can truly build this nation because this nation is a gift to all of us”, he said.

Anglican Bishop, who said that church is a conscience of the nation, added that part of responsibilities of church is not to serve as opposition political parties to government, but to commend when government is doing it right and advise behind closed doors when things are not going well.

He advised his successor to always seek the face of Got before taking every of his actions and decisions,  saying, “if you don’t ask God, you’re finished.”

  • AU grants Nigeria AFRIMA hosting right

AU grants Nigeria AFRIMA hosting right

The African Union ( AU ) has awarded the hosting right for the Pan African Music Initiative, All Africa Music Awards ( AFRIMA ), to Nigeria for another three years (2017-2019).

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Segun Adeyemi, Special Adviser to the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Lagos on Sunday.

The minister said the hosting right was given to the country following its successful hosting of the 2014-2016 editions.

He said that the award of the hosting right was conveyed in a letter written ton him by the Commissioner of Social Affairs at the AU Commission, Mrs Amira Elfadil.

Mohammed said the AU’s commissioner commended the growth and inclusiveness of AFRIMA by reaching out to `many musicians, music producers and creative arts practitioners in general’.

He said that Elfadi noted that between 2014 and 2016, during which Nigeria hosted three editions of AFRIMA, it “has become a very crucial event and movement of African musicians.’’

The minister said that the AU’s commissioner also noted that AFRIMA “allows them to establish synergies and work towards the development of Africa’s music and promotion of music in the continent
    and in the international arena.

“Based on this and other factors such as the willingness to create value and deepen the brand equity not only for Nigerians but also for Africans, the AU returned the hosting right of AFRIMA to Nigeria’’.

He said that government’s desire to retain the right was informed by the enthusiasm and sense of duty with which Nigerians embraced AFRIMA coupled with the prevailing international confidence in the present administration.

He said: “the African Union’s gracious concession to our request is beneficial for the creative sector in Nigeria and across Africa.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria is calling on state governments and corporate Nigeria to partner with it and the African Union in ensuring a
successful hosting of AFRIMA 2017 which will bring immense socio-economic benefits to the selected host city,’’ he said.

Mohammed disclosed that the 2017 edition of AFRIMA is scheduled to hold from Nov. 10 to Nov. 12.

  • ‘Chibok girls release: PDP insensitive, exhibits disdain for human life’

‘Chibok girls release: PDP insensitive, exhibits disdain for human life’

The Federal Government says the incautious statement by a faction of PDP criticizing the process leading to the release of the 82 Chibok girls further exhibits the party’s disdain for human life.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed described the statement as “indecent, inhuman and ill-timed”.

The minister, in the release signed by his Special Adviser, Mr Segun Adeyemi, said it was insensitive for any individual or organization to spoil the joy that heralded the release of the girls because of politics.

“It is clear that the kind of disdain for human life which the PDP exhibited in its incautious statement is the same reason the poor girls were kidnapped in the first instance.

“It is also this attitude the then PDP-controlled Federal Government took that seemed an eternity before even acknowledging the abduction, thus losing critical time for their rescue.

He noted that from the statement, it was clear that the PDP, whose incompetence and the cluelessness precipitated the Chibok girls crisis was not wishing and praying for it to end with the safe return of the abducted girls.

The minister recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had stated that the defeat of Boko Haram would not be complete without the rescue of the Chibok girls.

“If that includes swapping some Boko Haram elements for the girls, so what? Will the PDP rather have the girls stay in perpetual captivity, just to prove a ludicrous point?

“Didn’t superpower United States engage in negotiations with the Taliban that led to the exchange of five Taliban fighters for US Army Sgt Bowe Bergdahl in 2014?

“Didn’t Israel release 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for one Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit in 2011?

“A lot of factors come into play when a nation has to decide whether or not to engage in prisoner/hostage swap.

“None, however, trounces the sanctity attached to human life and the consideration for the pains of the loved ones of those involved,” he said.

The minister stressed that since the PDP failed to rescue even one of the Chibok girls, the party should hold its peace while the administration continued to seek the release of all the abducted girls, using every means at its disposal.

He reassured that the administration would continue to work assiduously to end all Boko Haram hostilities.
