I was furious over false sickness rumour – Segun Arinze

Veteran actor Segun Arinze has expressed his frustration over false reports circulating on social media that claimed he was ill and in need of financial assistance.

In an interview with QEDNG, Arinze revealed that the rumor originated from a woman who shared a doctored photo of him taken from a movie set.

The image was manipulated to make it appear as though he was sick, sparking widespread concern.

Initially dismissing the post, Arinze said he was forced to respond after receiving numerous calls from worried friends, family, and colleagues.

He admitted feeling angry and even tempted to confront the individual behind the rumor but ultimately chose to clarify the situation through a video, reassuring everyone that he was in good health.

“A girl started it. I was on set, they were filming, and the costumier—social media has become a dumping ground for so many things, and a lot of callous and mischievous things are being done there.

“There was a picture of me where the costumier was helping me take my costume off. I had to take a breather, I sat down, and you noticed I had a red bead on my hand. She took the picture, yanked it from the costumier’s page, doctored it by removing where the costumier was assisting me, and left only the part where I was sitting and taking off my clothes. Then she said her enemy is sick.

“I first wrote to the girl saying, ‘Can you pull this down because I am not sick, I am not ill in any way.

“I won’t lie to you, Olumide, I got very angry, very, very angry. If I had seen her physically, only God knows what I would have done to her. When she realised it was serious, she sent a message on my page saying, ‘My sincere apologies, sir” ,he said.

Arinze also called for stricter social media regulations, suggesting that users should be required to link their accounts to their national identification number (NIN) and bank verification number (BVN).

This, he believes, would help to prevent the spread of false information online.

“Not censoring them in terms of material, but there has to be a way of regulating it, the way we do our NIN and BVN. The Nigerian government needs to take it seriously through the Ministry of Communications. Everybody must have their NIN and BVN linked to their page, so when false news comes out, we know where to direct it”, he said.

The actor denied claims that he orchestrated the controversy to promote a film, calling the idea “madness.”

“Why would I do that? If I want to promote a film, I would do it in a decent way. Why would I use sickness to promote a film? Isn’t that madness?”, he said.

He also decided against taking legal action, saying that he would “leave them to God.”

“I thought about it. But how many people do you want to sue? Everybody took it from someone else. If the person who started it denies it and others claim they got it from somewhere, how many people do you want to sue? I leave them to God. If she is looking for sickness, she will get sickness”.

Segun concluded by explaining why the incident affected him deeply.

“This was about health; this was about falsehood. It has a domino effect. When people do things like this, they forget that the individuals they target have families, relatives, and friends. It can even affect job opportunities because a director might assume the person is truly sick”, he said.

“Now you know that I can play different roles. I hate being a stereotype. It kills off the actor. I don’t like stereotypes; I don’t like it. It never works for me. It may work for other actors, but for me, I don’t like being a stereotype. I like to see myself evolve in different roles”.

Actor Segun Arinze has opened up about his past conflict with fellow actor Emeka Ike, revealing that they have long since reconciled.

In a recent interview with QEDNG, Arinze shared insights into their disagreement, which stemmed from a leadership issue within the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) in 2009.

Segun emphasised the importance of moving on from grudges, stating, “Emeka Ike is a fine actor. We still talk; we laugh about those things. It doesn’t change the fact that he is a fine actor.

“The conflict ended naturally. We were not quarrelling. It was just about the position. That’s why I left the position. He also had other things to do.

“Then time and chance happened. And we are growing old. He is my friend, and we are cool. I’ve asked him to go for lunch or dinner whenever he is around.

“What are we having enemies for? The work I am doing is enough of a burden. Hate is a burden. Travel light. How long do you have to live in the world? You want to carry it on your shoulders? What do I need that animosity for?”

He also discussed his experiences with being typecast in movie roles and his desire to take on more diverse characters.

Segun also praised his colleagues, including veteran actor Olu Jacobs, Richard Mofe-Damijo, and Ramsey Nouah, for successfully avoiding typecasting.

He admired their ability to grow and evolve in their careers.

When asked about the competitive nature of the Nollywood industry, Segun dismissed the idea of rivalry among actors.

Instead, he emphasised the importance of supporting and celebrating one another’s successes.

“There is no need for competition. The sky is big enough for the birds to fly. When I see my colleagues doing well, I am genuinely happy for them.

“You can’t play all the roles, can you? Can you be everywhere at the same time? When my colleagues win awards, I am happy for them.

“Why do you want to compete? Competition brings bad blood. It’s always teamwork, like footballers on a field”, he said.

He said: “I want to thank my fans, friends and associates all over the world for reaching out to me through calls and WhatsApp messages to find out how I’m doing.

“As you can see, I’m very fine. I’m fit as a fiddle. Please, I am as fit as a fiddle. Those pictures flying around where taken from film set. I don’t know why some people decided to cause some mischief with them.

“I got into so many crazy relationships. Both the ones that were good, crazy, and bad I have seen all. That year, 2007. I cried to God and said ‘Father Lord I have had enough, can you just give me a wife’. I said just find me a wife. I remember I cried.

“And then I went to a wedding and I saw this beautiful woman. I asked my PA to get her number but he came back because he was scared. Julius Agwu and I were the MCs at the event. It was Don Chi’s wedding. And Julius Agwu said ‘My brother dey look for wife o’. When I sat I went to meet her, collected her contact and then invited her to dinner. That is how it started. The rest is history.

“We are sixteen years in marriage now with three lovely kids. She is a lawyer. She is also my legal adviser.

“When that happened to me in 1997 I kept quiet. I did not say anything. I just let it go. Till date I have said nothing and I do not want to say anything. I do not want to discuss anything about it. It happened. The shit will always happen. Everybody has a closet.”

In an interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, Arinze spoke about how being stereotyped as a ‘bad boy’ made him bow out of acting.

Arinze discussed his success in the Nollywood film Silent Night (1996), which helped him become well-known for his depiction of Black Arrow.

But he also talked about how portraying him as a bad guy in movies broke his mental health and made him give up acting.

“There was a time I took a hiatus from acting when people were casting in that mold of bad boy, bad boy and it began to affect my psyche and all that,” Arinze said.

EFCC should follow due process on Yahaya Bello – Segun Arinze

Prominent actor Segun Arinze has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to ensure the law takes its full course by ensuring fairness and legal propriety in the case against former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello.

The Governor, with his nephew and two others, are facing allegations of laundering N80 billion in a 19-count charge.

Weighing into the discourse, Arinze in a viral video criticised the social media trial of Yahaya Bello, labeling it as superfluous.

Expressing his observations, Segun Arinze stated: “I have been observing the things that have been going on with the EFCC and Yahaya Bello saga and it has been quite dramatic.

“First, the EFCC came out with a lot of statements on social media and in the news about the bulged arrest of Yahaya Bello and of course, the amount of dollars he paid into his children’s school account. It’s not enough to say the money came from the government but if it’s substantiated, it’s damning.

“I’m not saying Yahaya Bello is innocent or guilty. I don’t even have much details about that. What I’m bothered about is social media. If social media hasn’t dragged you before, you won’t understand. Too many opinions on social media with all the feeds coming out from the EFCC and generally, it just brings a lot of negativity on both sides.

“What I’m saying is, social media parliament is not the Nigerian judiciary. It can’t make any decisions. As I am made to understand, the case is already in court. So my advice is that EFCC should follow due process. Let the law take its course. That’s my personal opinion.”
