LASPOTECH shut down as ASUP disagrees with Rector

The management of Lagos State Polytechnic has on Tuesday shut down the institution to both staff and students for a week.

In a press release by the management, the decision was taken to enable the state government to conclude deliberations on Countess 15 migration issue and come up with its definite position on the issue.

The release read that “during this recess, no person will be allowed into any of the campuses of the polytechnic.Staff and students are therefore advised to stay away at least 200 meters radius to any of the polytechnic

“Staff and students are therefore advised to stay away at least 200 meters radius to any of the polytechnic campuses. Further directives will be duly communicated.”

However, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, Lagos State Polytechnic branch issued another statement suggesting the Rector was planning to carry out rituals within the campuses of the institution during this period.

On a contrary, the union’s General Secretary, Mr. Olayinka Uthman noted that the close down was for another reason.According to him, “the Rector intends to carry out rituals as usual on our campuses and do not want such barbaric act exposed to staff and students”.  He went on to declare the message as “null and void”.

According to him, “the Rector intends to carry out rituals as usual on our campuses and do not want such barbaric act exposed to staff and students.”

He went on to declare the message as “null and void”.

However, the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Comrade Lawal Dauda described the situation as “highly unbearable” and called on the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode to save the institution.

    Expectations for the Week

Senator Danjuma Goje of Gombe state claimed last week that men of The Nigerian Police Force took away documents containing the 2017 budget last week and this sent down cold down the spines of many concerned Nigerians.

Quickly, the Nigerian police came out to clear the air, they said they found some millions (although, this is no longer news to many Nigerians) and some incriminating materials too. The masses were happy, they leaped for joy, and they wanted to see where the investigation will lead to.

Alas, their expectations were cut short when all materials and monies gotten from the former Gombe governor were given back to him. Now, why were the monies and materials returned? We may never know the full truth but many suspect that it was settled “politically”. Is this good for our democracy?

Well, some may argue that we can’t separate politics from governance and such settlements are bound to happen.

On the other hand, Nigerians are hopeful that the budget will be thoroughly worked upon by the National Assembly and approved soon. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adeshina has said that the budget for this year isn’t behind schedule yet because last year’s budget is to expire on the fifth of this month, therefore, we still have four days before we are due for a new budget.

For the second time, the suspended boss of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ayo Oke will be interrogated by the Vice President Yemi Osibanjo-led panel to listen to his side of the story concerning the cash found in an Ikoyi private home recently.

Hopefully, the truth behind the found billions will be exposed to the world and it will serve as a deterrent to other public office holders.

In the last few weeks, President Muhammadu Buhari has not been seen at public functions, in fact, he didn’t go for the usual Jumaat service last Friday which further fueled speculation that the President is not in a good shape.

He also wasn’t available for the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting last week which has gotten many people worried. Many people including Wole Soyinka have asked the number one man in Nigeria to release the detailed medical record of his health to the public.

Will he proceed to release that? Time will tell but we can all continue to hope for the betterment of his health for the benefit of the country.

Nigerians urged to make wealth from waste

Chief Executive Officer of Carbon Credit Network, Femi Oye, has urged Nigerians to make wealth from waste from their surroundings.

He made the call at the celebration of the fifth anniversary of Carbon Credit Network in Lagos on Friday.

“Wealth can be created from this waste we find around. We actually started creating wealth from waste; this is something many consider funny,” he said.

He noted that there are dangers of waste to the environment which must be curtailed.

According to him, the success of his organization is an indication of how waste can be utilised to generate wealth.

He said the principle of generating waste from wealth informed the setting of his Network  and enumerated the journey so far.

“This is our fifth year on the roll doing this; it’s been a challenging and interesting journey. Growing up with my grandmother, I loved her so much; however, she lost her life when I was aged nine.

“Later on, it was discovered that she died of lung cancer. Back then in the village, they used to make use of firewood which affected the health of our mothers negatively. When I moved to the city, I discovered that even the kerosene used to cook wasn’t too healthy too. Smoke still comes out to hurt the eyes and chokes those cooking and it’s not good for our health. This spurred me to look for a solution and it eventually brought about the Mama Kike biofuel stove. The name Mama Kike was chosen because it’s my late grandmother’s name”.

A panelist at the event, Mrs. Chioma Ukonu also said Lagos state generates so much waste in a day adding that  waste recycling helps create jobs, gives a cleaner environment and “ puts money in our pocket. “

“Pet bottles are used to make weaves, matrasses and even football jerseys. Bring these pet bottles lying as waste and you’ll get an incentive from us for doing so,” she said.

A lecturer at the History and Strategic Studies department of University of Lagos who was also a panelist at the event, Dr. Obi Iwuagwu said, “we have to be more conscious of our environment, and we need to be careful of what we do to it. If we don’t take care of the environment, we will suffer for it”.

World malaria day: Mushin residents get 1000 nets

Residents of Mushin, a suburb of Lagos State on Wednesday got 1000 mosquito nets as gifts to commemorate the 2017 World Malaria Day celebrated around the world.

An initiative, Malaria To Zero visited the area and gave advice to residents on how to curb malaria, modes of getting to know the symptoms and mediums of preventing the deadly disease.

Agoyi Mary, who is a volunteer for the event and medical students from the University of Lagos, advised the residents on the health benefits of sleeping under malaria treated net.

“Treated nets help prevent malaria and that’s why it’s being distributed here today. Kids below age five, pregnant women, foreigners and sickle cell carriers should be made to sleep using these nets because they are more prone to malaria than others,” she said.

According to her, “Treated nets help prevent malaria and that’s why it’s being distributed here today. Kids below age five, pregnant women, foreigners and sickle cell carriers should be made to sleep using these nets because they are more prone to malaria than others.

“Treated Mosquito nets keep the female anopheles mosquito which causes malaria to humans away from the body. Malaria can only be gotten from the bite of the female anopheles mosquito, it can’t be gotten through spiritual means, by eating or drinking too much or even stress.”

She also urged the people to make use of the nets given to them and not abandon them in their homes.

On the other hand, Aderemi Olatunde, also a volunteer from the University of Lagos, stated the symptoms and methods of preventing malaria.

“Fever, headache and having a bitter mouth are some of the symptoms of malaria.

“However, since prevention is better than cure, we can prevent it through maintaining a very clean environment and ensuring that all containers of water are properly covered to keep mosquitoes from breeding around our homes.”

Aderemi further advised on how to make use of the nets distributed noting that the nets must be hung for a whole day in a cool place before being used.

“You can wash the nets when it gets dirty but it should not go beyond twenty times in four years. You should also ensure the nets are kept from the rays of the sun because it will go on to weaken the chemicals on the nets, therefore, making them less powerful.”

Mrs. Bolanle Victor–Laniyan, Head of Sustanability of Access bank, a sponsor of the event said malaria is responsible for the death of about 300,000 people yearly and it is important that the residents used the nets appropriately to prevent it.

Dr. Muntaqa Umar Sadiq, Chief Executive Officer, Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria, one of the sponsors of the event said the aim of the program was to eradicate malaria in Mushin. He also went on to appreciate the religious and traditional leaders in the environment for their enormous support to the success of the event.

The Oba of Odi Olowo, Mushin, Fatai Irawo who led other traditional and community leaders to the event thanked the sponsors for enlightening his people and advised them to use the nets in their homes to ensure that malaria becomes a thing of the past for members of the community.

Speaking with The Nation, Mrs. Adeleke Oduntan thanked the organisers of the event and prayed for them; “this is a good initiative and we are all grateful to the organisers, may God almighty continue to bless them for this”.

Another resident who simply gave his name as Apostle Giwa appreciated the traditional rulers for being able to bring such a “wonderful development” to the community.

    Expectations for the week

The Nigerian polity has continued to get heated up by displays from players in the political “industry”.  Various occurrences across the country have made tongues roll and the controversial large amount found in a private residence in Ikoyi is still making headlines across the country.

Just last week, the presidency announced the immediate suspension of Secretary to the Federal Government, David Babachir Lawal and National Intelligence Agency boss, Amb. Ayo Oke. Their positions are still pending depending on the report of the investigative panel headed by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

Lawal was suspended for his alleged involvement in a contract given to an organization where he was signatory to the account; the bad thing was that the contract was not properly executed. Many Nigerians have expressed happiness in this action from the President especially as it’s believed that Lawal is a top member of the “cabal”.

Earlier, the Senate had fingered him to have been involved in the deal, but a letter from the government and his refusal to appear before the Senate when invited seemed to have ended the case.

Tosin Adeshina, a political analyst said: “The suspension is a good development as the actions of the former SGF has cast a blithe on the Federal Government. Even though it’s coming late, I believe it’s not too late to right the wrongs of the past.

“The former SGF abused his office by awarding contract to his personal company which is against the Code of Conduct for public officers and he had paid a high price for it.

“The lesson for political office holders is that public office must not be used for personal enrichment but a privilege to serve.

“The Government is an authority for the people not an authority over them. As a result, government officials must stay away from acts that will bring disrepute to their integrity.

“I will also like to advise President Buhari to take actions when necessary as foot dragging on important decisions is a sign of weakness on the President in particular and the Presidency in general”.

On the other hand, Oke got his suspension for the controversy that surrounded the organization he headed that involved the found 13 billion naira in a private residence believed to be owned by a member of his family for “covert” operations.

Now, the questions on the lips of many are – can there be any COVERT operation not known to the Commander-in-Chief?  Did Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers state and Femi Fani Kayode LIE to the general  public by getting the name of Rotimi Ameachi involved in this controversy? Is Amb. Oke standing in to cover up for some powerful politicians as claimed? Well, in some days’ time, the investigative panel should certainly have answers to this question and many others currently popping up in the minds of millions of Nigerians.

One of the worst things to have happened to the Nigerian Professional Football League this season was announced last week, it came like a blast. Our league was no longer going to be shown on television again. Supersport, the station that used to ensure that at least one league match was beamed live to the world every weekend made it public that the League Management Company led by Shehu Dikko had broken some part of the “deal” and so they were going to stop the weekly live broadcast. For about two weeks now, the league had stopped being on television but until the clarification, it was not too clear what the problem was.

Earlier in the season, Sikiru Olatunbosun of Mfm Fc had scored a screamer that made him win the award for CNN goal of the week. Infact, many have started tipping the goal to win the FIFA Puskas award early next year. But with this development, it’s unfortunate that people will no longer have access to seeing games again except they visit stadiums.  Obviously, a whole lot of development still needs to be brought into the Nigerian league to make it profitable and marketable to the world.

Kogi varsity students protest lecturers’ strike

Students of Kogi state university, Anyigba trooped out to the streets Monday morning protesting their unnecessary stay at home due to the prolonged strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on the 27th of February this year.

The students came out in large numbers displaying placards and screaming “we want to resume.”

  • Expectations For The Week

    Expectations For The Week

Last week was one that was surrounded with fresh controversy from the polity; the discovery of millions of dollars in a private residence in Ikoyi, the exchange of words between the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara and Governor El-Rufai, and the “battle” between Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido and Governor Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari of Zamfara state.

Obviously, the last may not have been heard from these cases as this new week may still go on with more. The trending topic in the country is the 43 million dollars alongside other currencies found in an Ikoyi home last week.

Pictures of the found money circulated the public space like wild fire; the questions started coming in – who owns the money? Who owns the apartment wherein the bogus amount was found?

Shortly after the information spree, the National Intelligence Agency came forward laying claim to the money, later on, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state said the money belongs to his State. Names of certain individuals (Senator Solomon Adeola, Rotimi Ameachi, Mo Abudu – although these personalities have denied any connection to the found money) were rumored to be behind the money but still, no name has been officially pronounced as owner of the Ikoyi residence.

Many questions are still begging for answers, who owns the money? Is the NIA trying to cover up for certain persons? Is finding the owner of an apartment in a highbrow part of Lagos a difficult task to carry out?  Who is actually telling the truth? Hopefully, Nigerians will get to know the real situation soon.

After an open exchange of words, Hon. Yakubu and Gov. El-Rufai last week publicly displayed their pay slips and gave analysis of how security votes allocated to Kaduna state was being utilized respectively. The open “attack” by the duo has gotten many Nigerians happy, are you asking why? Oh, it’s because many consider this a victory for the common man.

Many are of the opinion that many more of such “argument” will further deepen the roots of our democracy, expose the excesses of political leaders and make the people understand the act of governance better. Will the National Assembly go ahead to reveal their budget as demanded by El-Rufai? It remains to be seen.

After Gov. Yari declared that God was “punishing” his people with meningitis type C, Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido replied by saying God had nothing to do with the disease that has claimed the lives of about 500 people, and that the governor should look for a solution to the plight of his citizen.

The Yari/Sanusi controversy is still ongoing. After attacking and counter attacking each other’s comment recently, both eminent individuals are in the news again. Sanusi’s call for northern leaders to further educate their citizens has met Yari’s – “Practice what you preach” comment. Indeed, the Northern leaders need to improve on the educational sector in their environment to enable the youths have the opportunity of a glorious future.

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, the Nigerian Professional Football League will be alive again as matches will be played across various stadia in the country. Table toppers, Mfm Fc go away to Akwa United, Plateau United host Katsina United, champions Rangers go away to Gombe United alongside other scintillating fixtures.

Also, the second leg matches of the UEFA Champions League quarter final will be decided on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Will Barcelona be able to pull through with another comeback after three nil defeat in Turin? It remains to be seen.

#BBNaija winner Efe in social media controversy

Efe Ejeba, winner of the just concluded Big Brother Naija reality TV show has reportedly gotten himself involved in a social media mess.after his Instagram account unfollowed all his fans and supporters leaving four celebrities and one sponsor of the entertainment show he won a few days ago.

The BBNaija winner, who had over 2000 followers, allegedly unfollowed all his fans and supporters leaving only four celebrities; @funkejenifaakindele, @baddosneh, @official2baba, @annieidibia1, and sponsor of the entertainment show, @payporte he won a few days ago.

Angry fans of the new celebrity went on the rampage on social media showing their displeasure at such act describing it as “pride”.

However, facts reveal that the controversy is unfounded claiming that the handle, @efemoney, has always had the same number of followers even before joining the reality TV show.

As at the time of filing this report, no official statement has been released both from Efe and his social media team.

  • Expectations for the week

Finally, the Big Brother Naija show came to an exciting end yesterday after reaching its peak; Efe Ejeba, a graduate of Economics who hails from Delta state emerged victorious after securing 57% of the total number of votes casted by fans.

To give you a quick recap, earlier in the program yesterday, Marvis, DebbieRise and Tboss were evicted making Bisola and Efe as the last two standing housemates; eventually, Efe was announced winner. The implication of his meteoric rise to fame means that he gets a cash prize of 25,000,000 naira and an SUV.

The breakdown of the votes are: Efe (2,502,494), Bisola (704,072), DebbieRise (109,659), while Marvis and Tboss got 57,341 and 683,802 respectively.

With these numbers of votes, the housemates won’t be the only ones smiling to the bank, the organizers too must be making so much ‘mazuma’ and wishing they can put this up twice in a year.

After performing many tasks and taking part in this entertaining show, people are hopeful that these individuals will go ahead to blossom in their chosen careers like former Big Brother housemates, Karen Igho, Ebuka Uchendu and Tayo Faniran after now.

The health crisis ravaging the country seems to be on the increase, over 420 Nigerians have been reported dead as a result of Meningitis. However, the glimmer of light for us all is that a solution is underway.

In a hilarious slant, the Zamfara State governor added comic spice to the already tense situation when he declared that God was “punishing” his people with the disease.

Many Nigerians including the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi urged the state governor not to bring God into the picture but rather look for pragmatic solutions to assuage the health crisis that has overtaken his state. In a reprisal response, Yari reiterated his earlier comment, stating that his people have stopped living the life pleasing to God and He was using this medium to punish the people.

Hopefully, natural solutions and “spiritual” ones too will be gotten quickly so that this very deadly disease will become a thing of the past.  Already, the federal government has commenced vaccination in Zamfara which happens to be the most affected state after recording over 200 deaths to this scourge.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has discovered monies whose owners haven’t showed up to claim them in recent times. They have also been able to get suspects arrested but they have not been able to properly prosecute their cases in court. Judging from very recent examples, the anti-graft agency needs to beef-up its prosecution process to ensure that they are not labeled ‘toothless dog’ by the public.

President Buhari has equally called upon them to properly dig deeper into issues before dragging suspects to court.

Mfm fc of Agege has moved back to the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League after trouncing El-Kanemi warriors of Maduguri 3-0 in Lagos at the weekend. With goals from wonderboy Sikiru Olatunbosun, goal king Stephen Odey and Austine Ogunye, the “Olukoya boys” now go top of the log with 33 points followed closely by Plateau United who have a game in hand.

In an ugly incident over the weekend in the league, fans of Kano Pillars attacked the Akwa United team after losing the home game. Hopefully, proper punishment will be meted out to the club to serve as deterrent to others by the organizers of the league. Also, the organizing body has to ensure they bring the league back on television after two weeks of non-availability of league football live for all to see.
