    Ex-governor Segun Oni rejoins APC

Barely five years after he left All Progressives Congress (APC) for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and later Social Democratic Congress (SDP), former Ekiti State Governor Segun Oni has rejoined the party.

Oni, who governed Ekiti State between 2007 and 2010 on the platform of PDP, was the governorship candidate of SDP in 2022 election, emerging second behind Oyebanji.

The ex-governor registered with APC at his country home in Ifaki-Ekiti, Ido/Osi Local Government, yesterday amid jubilation by supporters and loyalists.

Speaking after his registration, Oni said his return to APC was a homecoming and a carefully considered decision taken in the interest of Ekiti people.

“I have returned to APC to join hands with Governor Biodun Oyebanji and other stakeholders to further strengthen peace, unity and development in Ekiti State,” he said.

The ex-governor said Ekiti’s political stability must be sustained beyond partisan differences, adding that he was impressed by the current administration’s inclusive governance style and commitment to grassroots development.

Reacting to Oni’s return, the Coordinator of the APC e-registration exercise in Ekiti State, Gold Adedayo, described the development as a major boost to the party’s e-registration drive and a significant political gain.

He said Oni’s return would strengthen APC ahead June 20 governorship election, noting that the former governor remained a respected figure with strong grassroots appeal across the state.

The serving Commissioner for Youth Development said: “Today, we registered former governor Segun Oni as a member of our great party. This significant political move will help the ongoing online registration of our members in Ekiti.

“When it comes to grassroots politics, former governor Oni is a respected individual in this aspect. He is well loved at the grassroots and the intention of our registration is to attract more people into APC. Having individual like former governor with us at this crucial time is a big plus.

“We are happy with the spate at which we are going in the online registration exercise and we know that APC is poised for greatness and victory as we look up to future elections”.

The commissioner urged the party leaders not to rest and be complacent in their mobilisation efforts, saying more concerted actions are required to strengthen the party’s numerical strength at the grassroots.

Fayose seeks Oni’s blessings for 2026 Gov bid

A governorship aspirant on the platform Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Emmanuel Fayose on Monday met former Governor Segun Oni over his 2026 gubernatorial ambition.

The meeting which held in Oni’s, country home, was part of his consultations for the 2026 governorship election.

Speaking at the meeting, Fayose who is the immediate brother of ex- Governor Ayo Fayose, sought the ex-Governor’s guidance and support, acknowledging his wealth of experience and influence in Ekiti politics.

” I have come to seek his guidance and support. Your experience and influence in Ekiti politics are invaluable, and I believe that with your support, I can make a real difference in the lives of our people,” he said

Fayose shared his vision for the state with Oni, emphasising commitment to unity, development, and progress in Ekiti.

“I am highly committed to fostering unity, sustainable development, and progress in Ekiti. I believe that with the support of stakeholders like Engineer Segun Oni, we can achieve great things for our state,” Fayose said.

Oni welcomed Fayose and commended his aspirations for a better Ekiti.

The Ex-Governor encouraged the PDP governorship hopeful to remain focused on his vision and prioritize the interests of the people as he continues his political consultations.

“I am impressed by your commitment to the development of Ekiti. I encourage you to remain focused on your vision and prioritize the interests of the people as you continue your political consultations,” he said.

  • Bravo and happy birthday Governor Segun Oni

Bravo and happy birthday Governor Segun Oni

With every due sense of modesty I can claim that there aren’t many  who have been more involved, and for as long as I have, in the politics of Ekiti state. I can, therefore, write as authoritatively as anybody on the subject of Ekiti politics, an aspect of  which is what I am doing here today. Interestingly, this is only the first part as I have traversed the subject so intimately since the 80’s when Ekiti was part of Ondo state, that The Nation’s commentariat once dubbed me the Ekiti columnist. That was during the Obasanjo years when the man believed he could ride Ekiti people roughshod and I felt, honour bound, to encourage our people, almost on a weekly basis, to stand, very firmly, on the straight and narrow path, politically.

In making this claim, I am not oblivious of the crucial role played by that inimitable journalist, my dear aburo, Dare  Babarinsa, whose exertions as the State correspondent of  Concord newspapers culminated in his book, ‘The ‘House of War’, in which he generously devoted nearly a full page to my role in the state UPN. Needless to say, though, he was not directly involved in the politics of the state as yours truly was.

This then means that I was right there during the Papa Ajasin years, that period which would best be situated as the very beginning of the crisis that has characterised Ekiti politics like forever. It was the time Ekiti politicians began their mutual loathing, and enemity, suspecting each other’s every move, every inch of the way, both inter and intra – party.

While this was more pronounced inter party, it was not absent, intra party; and though now, happily greatly subdued – thanks to Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s uniquely accommodating, and reconciliatory – call it Omoluabi politics – which can, with considerable justification, be described as a re-incarnation of Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim’s ‘politics without bitterness’ of the Second Republic, it still simmers underground, somewhat.

By the way, although I can pride myself as being amongst the earliest few to suggest to this Omoluabi politician, then the state’s Secretary to Government, that he should try contest the state’s governorship election slated for 2022, at a time it was fartherest from his mind as I once documented in one of my articles shortly before the election, I did not see him until well after a year after his assumption of office. One thing I am doubly sure about is that we are damn lucky to have ‘Biodun

Abayomi Oyebanji, BAO,  as he is called, worldwide, as our governor in this critical times.

As I told him during my visit to him at the Ekiti House in Ikeja, Lagos early July this year, I have already started the draft of an article with the title: ‘BAO – Mania: How Governor Abiodun Oyebanji Reset Ekiti Politics’, the publishing of which, God willing, may not be earlier than during the second anniversary of his assumption of office.

The ’cause célèbre’ for this piece today, therefore, is not  the governor, but the absolutely fascinating, and highly commendable withdrawal from partisan politics, of the state’s former Governor, Engr Segun Oni, which he recently announced while addressing some journalists ahead his 70th birthday.

He is thus quitting partisan politics at a time when the ovation is loudest; thus recording a distinct rarity amongst Nigerian politicians who would, characteristically, rather die on the job.

According to the report, his decision to quit was not driven by any immediate political ambition, but by his desire for a more reflective, and less active role in politics adding, however, that he would be available to give advice. He concluded by announcing  his endorsement of governor Oyebanji for the 2026 Ekiti state governorship election, premising it on the governor’s unique politics, and stellar performance.

    Vintage Segun Oni!

Born 5 September 1954, and studied Chemical Engineering at the Great University of Ife, Ile – Ife, for his first degree, Oni was governor of Ekiti State from 29 May 2007 to 17 February 2009, and from 6 May 2009 to 15 October, 2010. He was a member of the PDP but in 2014,  defected to the newly formed APC where he was subsequently elected the Deputy National Chairman (South), a position he held from 2014 to 2020.

He was governor at a very politically charged period in the state, with both PDP and the APC having an equal number of legislators ( 13 each) in the state House of Assembly and, having to contend with a  number of court cases, topmost of which was the long – running case instituted by Dr Kayode Fayemi against his election.

Governor Oni would later step down from office on  15 October, 2010 after the Appeal court, sitting in Ilorin, Kwara state, declared Dr  Fayemi winner of both the 2007 governorship election, as well as the subsequent 2009 Rerun Election.

Lest the reader be surprised, I authored about the most acerbic of articles against governor Oni during his tenure as governor of Ekiti state and, even as late as during the June 2022 governorship election when he was the candidate of  the  SDP.

I would learn later in the course of his tenure, that his Media aides, many of  them very brilliant journalists, were on very strict instructions, from him, never to reply to “Brother Femi’s tirades” against his government, adding that he knew I was writing from  my personal convictions and that he, indeed, asked them whether they have seen me benefit anything from politics. His Uncle, my very good friend, Pastor Segun Fayemi, told me all these much later. This again is another testament to his being an ‘Eni Uyi, Eni Eye’, as we describe decent people in Ekiti. Despite the many years past, I still greatly appreciate him and wish, very fervently, that his tribe will increase amongst our politicians. It is my ardent hope too that his example here would serve as a teachable curve for many a Nigerian politician.

To show how much I have always appreciated governor Oni’s person, if not his conservative, PDP politics, l  reproduce below, my reference to him in my articles ahead the referred governorship election; articles which were intended to vigorously canvass, not his candidature, but that of the APC candidate.

In the article titled ‘Ekiti: I Ask Again Must Our Politicians Always Fight To The Death?’ of 10 February 2022, I wrote:

But all these could not have happened had total strangers, the likes of former President Olusegun Obasanjo  and  Chief Bode  George  not,  like  a meteor,  suddenly  appeared

and  insinuated  themselves, needlessly,  into  Ekiti  politics.

That was way back  2003 when they overawed the almost faultless campaign of Chief  S. K Babalola, a highly regarded Ekiti elder, politician and gentleman per excellence, thereby  effectively muddling up our politics, like forever.

That was exactly when rain started to beat us anew in Ekiti, politically speaking, eventuating in  the: “bo ba o pa, bo o ba o bu lese”, dangerous politics that climaxed in the Ido – Osi

scorch-earth, ‘mini war’ of the 2009 Rerun election.  During that period, Ekiti had a one day governor, witnessed an Obasanjo – inspired, but inchoate impeachment, just as we saw Mama Ayoka’s infantile, political abracadabra, to mention but a few.

We have now come to that point in time when any true lover of Ekiti, among the  contestants, must ‘think Ekiti, rather than be consumed by self, because  he who fights and runs away, runs to fight another day. Fortunately, they all have age on their side. These Ekiti Patriots – yes patriots – must sit down and critically interrogate the question: Why, at every governorship election cycle, must Ekiti be in the news for the wrong reasons?

Although this article is aimed, primarily, at helping to find a rapprochement within  the APC, I also feel concerned about the PDP, since the Ekiti bird cannot fly with one wing. For instance, insecurity has become so alarming, and commonplace, that we must not allow any insecurity entrepreneur turn Ekiti into a killing field.

Our politicians must realise that no position is worth the blood of a human being.

“That said, let me confess that I am personally delighted at the news of His Excellency, Engr Segun Oni’s imminent departure from the PDP.  I can see now why PDP can no longer sleep easy, both here at home, and in Abuja. Governor Segun Oni is a highly respected, absolutely incorruptible politician who would never stomach the chicanery that played out at the last PDP primaries which, but for eagle – eyed soldiers,  would have been inundated by  armed thugs who were being ferried there all the way from Ibadan. He and his supporters deserve to let PDP know that he is worth every bit of his name in gold”.

I repeated these words, and more, in the article:’Ekiti ’22 -The Inevitability of BAO’s Victory For Uninterrupted Development In Ekiti’, dated 22nd May, 2022, even though I promptly went on to show why his party, the  SDP, would be unable to ensure a continuation of the state’s developmental trajectory.

As it turned out, Ekiti rejected both the PDP and SDP, but not without affirming their respect for, and appreciation of governor Oni’s persona, by making sure that he soundly trounced the PDP candidate, Hon. Bisi Kolawole, who he outscored by having 82,211votes to 67,457,  while the APC candidate, and now Governor Biodun Oyebanji, got 187,057 votes to emerge winner.

Concluding, I salute Governor Oni’s courage in quitting at the most appropriate time, that is, when the ovation is loudest; happy also that by the grace of God, he will be there, in very robust health, and available, as a reservoir of knowledge, from which future generations of Ekiti politicians can tap from time to time.

    Here’s wishing him a happy 70th birthday

  • Early crack in Ekiti?

The news of the suspension, of Segun Oni, former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) former governor of Ekiti and former All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy national chairman (South), did not exactly come as a surprise.

The moment Chief Oni was invited, by his local Ifaki APC Ward II, in Ekiti’s Ido-Osi local government area,  to answer charges over “anti-party” activities, you needed no especial acuity to know something was bound to give.

That the former governor didn’t show up at the meeting venue, was no entire surprise too.  It could well be that Engr. Oni felt the system was rigged against him anyway; and was not going to legitimize the process with his presence.

Or it could be what the uppity London newspaper, The Economist, would call the “African Big Man” syndrome — that penchant to feel that because one had attained a certain height in the party, it was infra dig for the ward level of the party to summon him.  That is a political a hubris that seems to have evolved with Nigerian tempestuous democracy.

Whatever it is, Hardball wants to believe the former governor got a fair hearing; and that the decision is still subject to higher channels of the party before a final decision is taken.

Still, whatever APC does with its members, particularly disciplinary measures, should be the business of APC.  Beyond basic fairness, Hardball is not really interested.

What Hardball is not disinterested in, however, is core development.  By Ekiti’s not so stellar example, development, which the people crave, is often captive to politics — politics of the most brainless kind.  That should trouble everyone, with the development crisis Nigeria generally faces.

In Ekiti, it takes an added deja vu — have we not seen all these before?  Of course, we have!

That is why Ekiti would trade a Fayemi, with excellent developmental policies of his first gubernatorial term, with Fayose, just because of plebeian politics.  The Ekiti people have been the net loser.

Yes, Fayose has expired his term and didn’t quite exit in a blaze of glory.  But what is personal glory or sorrow, compared to needless collective suffering?  To make up for Fayose’s lost years, tourism-powered jobs in the Ikogosi sector have got to be restarted again.

But what of the key N5, 000 welfare monthly benefits, for the elderly and vulnerable, that would take a back seat for now?  Imagine what improvement that would have made on the Ekiti economy now, if it had continued uninterrupted, for some eight years now?  That is the toll plebeian politics takes on excellent policies.

The point here is that the Kayode Fayemi first-term debacle started with cracks like this.  By the time it climaxed, the humpty-dumpty had had a great fall!

Which is why every lover of Ekiti people must ensure this Oni issue doesn’t snowball into a crisis.  After the Fayose debacle, Ekiti must jealously guard whatever progress it makes.  That is why APC stakeholders must sort out the problem before the  Ekiti people, again, become the net-losers.

  • APC suspends Oni over alleged anti-party activities

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ifaki Ward II, Ekiti State has suspended former Governor Segun Oni for alleged involvement in anti-party activities.

The party, which did not mention the alleged anti-party activities, gave the suspension order in a letter dated yesterday. It was addressed to the former APC Deputy Chairman (South).

The letter was signed by the ward chairman, Shina Akinloye, and the secretary, Ogunyemi Taiwo, as well as 24 other executive members in the ward.

APC executive members in Ido /Osi Local Government Area also signed the suspension letter through their Assistant Financial Secretary A. Suleiman and the Assistant Organising Secretary Olanrewaju Olamope.

Oni was earlier summoned to defend himself over allegations levelled by some party members within seven days, which lapsed yesterday.

The summon was contained in a letter dated April 24, which was signed by the Ward chairman and Ward Secretary.

The letter of invitation was received on Oni’s behalf by one Segun Adetunji on April 25.

But, in the suspension letter, the party said it took the action over Oni’s failure to appear before the ward executive to clear the allegations.

The letter reads: “Subject to Article 21 Subsections I, II and X of the APC Constitution 2014 as amended, we undersigned executive members of the APC hereby suspend you indefinitely from our great party, based on your refusal to honour our invitation for investigation and fact-finding into the allegation of anti-party activities levelled against your person by the members of our party.

“We are by the copy of this letter informing both the local government and state working committee of the party for necessary information and action.”

In his reaction, the former governor said he was yet to be notified on his suspension.

“I am not sure. There is a structure in the party. There is a way things are done in the party.

“The constitution of the party is clear on cases of suspension. It clearly sites circumstances and outlines procedures to be taken to warrant and effect a suspension.

“If any suspension exists, I need to be notified. And if such circumstances do not exist nor procedures taken in line with the party’s extant laws, then a suspension invariably does not exist,” he said.

On his failure to heed the invitation of Ifaki APC Ward as conveyed in a letter dated April 24, the former governor queried the pedigree of people behind the said invitation.

“Who are they? I am not a nobody in the party. So, I cannot be expected to honour such a faceless invitation.

“Who are they? What is their pedigree? If a group of rascals signed a letter, how can they expect me to give any thought to such? Let those who wrote the letter show face and level allegations,” Oni said.

The Ifaki born politician had challenged Fayemi’s victory at the May 12, 2018 governorship primary in which he came second after he had initially congratulated the winner.

The ex-governor, in his suit, claimed that Fayemi was not eligible to stand as the APC flag bearer because he did not resign from office as Minister of Mines and Steel Development 30 days before the shadow election.

But, the Supreme Court, in its judgment, finally dismissed Oni’s suit for lack of merit. It said Fayemi didn’t breach the law by resigning after the primary.

  • Breaking: APC suspends former Ekiti Gov Oni

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended the former Ekiti State governor, Segun Oni for alleged involvement in anti-party activities.

The Ekiti State chapter of the party gave the suspension order in a letter dated 1st May, 2019 and addressed to Oni.

The letter was signed by the chairman and secretary of Ifaki ward II, Shina Akinloye and Ogunyemi Taiwo respectively and 24 other executive members in the ward.

The APC executive in Ido /Osi local government,  through its Assistant Financial Secretary and Assistant Organising Secretary, Messrs A. Suleiman and Olanrewaju Olamope, also signed respectively.

The party earlier summoned the former Deputy Chairman (South) to defend himself within seven days, which elapsed on Wednesday, against allegation levelled by some party members.

The summon by APC executives in Ifaki 2 was contained in a letter dated April 24, 2019 signed by Ward chairman and Ward Secretary.

The letter reads: “We the executive members of the APC in Ifaki Ward II, hereby request your presence at the Ilero town hall, Ilogbe , Ifaki Ekiti to clear air about the allegations by members of the APC in your ward.

“Kindly indicate by informing the APC chairman the convenient time and date to appear before members within the next seven days of the reception of this letter”.

The letter of invitation was received on Oni’s behalf by one Segun Adetunji on 25th April, 2019.

The party said it took the action over failure of the party chieftain to appear before the ward executive to clear the allegations.

The letter reads: ” Subject to Article 21 Subsections I, II and X of the APC constitution 2014 as amended, we undersigned executive members of the APC hereby suspend you indefinitely from our great party, based on your refusal to honour our invitation for investigation and fact finding into the allegation of anti party activities leveled against your person by the members of our party.

The ex-governor, in his suit, claimed that Fayemi was not eligible to stand as the APC flag bearer because he did not resign from office as Minister of Mines and Steel Development 30 days before the shadow election.

Oni also averred in his suit that the White Paper issued by a Judicial Commission of Inquiry raised by former Governor Ayo Fayose indicted Fayemi and barred him from holding public office for ten years.

Prominent party leaders including the state APC Elders’ Forum begged Oni to withdraw the case after the suit was filed at the Federal High Court but the former governor insisted on pursuing the case to a logical conclusion.

But the Supreme Court dismissed Oni’s suit for lack of merit, saying Fayemi didn’t breach the law by resigning after the primary.

Fayemi, in his reaction to the court verdict, extended the olive branch to Oni, with a promise to work with him to move the party forward.

But some party members were said to have insisted Oni needed to be punished for disrespecting the party by declining the Senatorial ticket and went to court to upturn Fayemi’s victory.

In his reaction, the former governor, Segun Oni said he was yet to be notified on his suspension from APC.

  • Ekiti APC ward leaders give Oni ultimatum to defend allegations

FORMER Ekiti State Governor Segun Oni is in deeper trouble with All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in his native Ifaki-Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area.

This is coming barely two weeks after losing an eligibility suit filed against Governor Kayode Fayemi at the Supreme Court.

The party leaders have summoned Oni to come and defend himself within seven days against allegations levelled against him by party members.

Oni, a former APC Deputy National Chairman (South), had challenged Fayemi’s victory at the May 12, 2018 governorship primary in which he came second after he had 2congratulated the winner.

The ex-governor, in his suit, claimed that Fayemi was not eligible to stand as the APC flagbearer because he did not resign from office as Minister of Mines and Steel Development 30 days before the shadow election.

Oni also averred in his suit that the White Paper issued by a Judicial Commission of Inquiry raised by former Governor Ayo Fayose indicted Fayemi and barred him from holding public office for 10 years.

Prominent party leaders, including the state APC Elders’ Forum, had begged Oni to withdraw the case after the suit was filed at the Federal High Court, but the former governor insisted on pursuing the case to a logical conclusion.

But, the Ifaki-born politician failed in his bid to sack Fayemi from office as his case was thrown out by the Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti; Court of Appeal sitting in Ado Ekiti and the Supreme Court in Abuja, which all held that his case lacked merit.

The summon APC executives in Ifaki Ward 2 was contained in a letter dated April 24, 2019, seen by The Nation yesterday and it was signed by Ward Chairman and Ward Secretary and addressed to Oni.

The letter reads: “We the executive members of the APC, Ifaki Ekiti hereby requests your presence at the Ilero Town Hall, Ilogbe, Ifaki Ekiti to clear some allegations against your person by some members of the APC Ward II, Ifaki Ekiti.

“Kindly indicate by informing the Chairman of the APC Ward II, Ifaki Ekiti the convenient time and date to meet the executive members within the next seven days of the receipt of this letter.

    “Please treat as very urgent.”

The state APC Publicity Secretary, Chief Ade Ajayi, confirmed the disciplinary action being taken by the party leaders against Oni.

Ajayi, a former House of Assembly member, said the party’s constitution provides for disciplinary action against any erring member.

He said: “The party is bigger than any individual and the party’s constitution stipulates disciplinary action against any member found to have contravened party rules and regulations.

“The party constitution provides that any disciplinary action against any member should start from his ward where such an individual will be given an opportunity to defend himself.”

Fayemi had within hours of winning the primary, visited Oni and other fellow contestants as a gesture of reconciliation and request to work together.

Oni was also offered the Ekiti North senatorial ticket, which he ceded to fellow Ifaki indigene who represented the district between 2011 and 2015, Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi.

Barely two weeks after losing an eligibility suit filed against Governor Kayode Fayemi at the Supreme Court, former Ekiti Governor Segun Oni has sunk deeper into trouble with party leaders.

Fayemi, had within hours of winning the primary last year, visited Oni and other fellow contestants as a gesture of reconciliation and request to work together.

Oni was also offered the Ekiti North senatorial ticket of the party, which he ceded to fellow Ifaki indigene who represented the district between 2011 and 2015, Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi.

  • APC to Oni: embrace Fayemi’s olive branch for greater Ekiti

THE Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has appealed to former Governor Segun Oni to accept the verdict of the Supreme Court in the best interest of the state.

The party said Ekiti State’s growth would be accelerated if the party members could sheathe swords and work assiduously in tandem with the four cardinal points of the governor.

In a statement in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, the APC Chairman, Paul Omotoso, said both Fayemi and Oni are eminent members of the party and Ekiti citizens, who should be united in spirits for a prosperous Ekiti.

Omotosho said the party perceived the judgment as no victor, no vanquished, just like Governor Fayemi felt about it.

The party, he said, must be focused to be able to deliver on its promises to Ekiti populace.

The apex court on Wednesday dismissed the eligibility case filed by Oni against Fayemi, where he prayed the court to nullify the governor’s participation in the Ekiti APC governorship primary.

Oni, in the suit, said he won the May 26, 2018 primary since Fayemi was not qualified on the basis of his alleged refusal to resign 30 days before primary as stipulated by the party’s constitution.

Omotoso hailed the resilience and dogged determination of some members of the party to think of a legitimate way of challenging a primary, rather than resorting to self-defence.

The party chairman added that the court remains the best democratic channel to challenge the outcome of any election, saying the party won’t sanction Oni and his supporters for exhausting legal mechanism in fighting their course.

He said: “The judgment by the highest court in the land affirming and authenticating the victory of Dr. Fayemi at the primary was a welcome development.

“At this point, I want to remind all members of APC in Ekiti State that this victory belongs to us all. We should now put this behind us and join hands with the administration of Dr. Fayemi to move the state forward.”
