Rio 2016: We won’t be under pressure – Toriola

Captain of the table tennis team to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, Segun Toriola believes the team would not be under unnecessary pressure to perform at the games.

Toriola, who has been celebrated globally for being the first African athlete to feature in seven Olympic Games said they hope to make the country proud in Brazil.

“It is very important that we put up a good performance and make the country proud at the Olympics. We are preparing ourselves very well and hopefully we will have something to celebrate in Rio.”

He added: Aruna Quadri is an experienced player and he is the best in Africa for now based of his achievement but I don’t think that he will be under unnecessary pressure in Rio because he is not going to be thinking about the games. It is only when an athlete thinks that he put himself under unnecessary pressure. As a team will not be playing under pressure too as we want to go out there and make names for ourselves and the country.”

Also, the President of Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Wahid Oshodi believes the players are gearing up to do well in Brazil.

“‎Our preparation could be a lot better but we all know the problem that is facing sports today. The players have continue to do their best to keep in shape and they are working very hard as you know before the tournament start. We are hopeful, we had high hope, we are confident that we will do well with these players,” Oshodi said.

  • Ahead of Rio 2016 Olympic Games: Toriola gets IOC recognition

For being the first Africa to be competing at seven Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recognized the rare feat of Nigeria’s Segun Toriola.

Toriola who is the first African athlete to feature in seven Olympic Games will be competing in the table tennis event of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil and with this development, the has lauded the most decorated table tennis player as a record breaker.

In the article published on the IOC website on Monday, Toriola was described as a record breaking athlete, who is Africa’s most successful table tennis player of all-time.

ITTF Open: Foreign players eager to return for 2017 edition

After having nice time while taking part in the 2016 ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open, some of the foreigners that featured in the five-day tournament say they would be willing to return to Lagos come 2017.

From women singles champion, Portugal’s Jieni Shao to men singles winner, Finland’s Benedek Olah,   the atmosphere at the competition was friendly enough to entice players to return.

“I think I really enjoyed myself in Lagos. I think the fans were unique and I really feel them whenever I am playing. This is not common across the world as the fans were always supporting us. I hope to come back because I really played very well particularly the quarterfinal and semifinal matches against Nigeria’s Bode Abiodun and Segun Toriola. They were my toughest opponents because they played with a lot of spin with different kind of style.

He added: “My game is now on another level because I was consistent in this tournament and this paid off for me to win my first World Tour title. I have a good feeling throughout the tournament and I hope to be back next year. I did not regret being invited by Aruna Quadri and I think it is a god atmosphere for the players and I must also commend the organisers for a good job.

Russia’s Irina Ermakova believes her third visit to Nigeria was fruitful just as she hopes to return again in 2016. “Being my third time in Lagos, I think winning gold after third attempt was exciting. It was not an easy match but my teammate really helped a lot. I think the unity between us really was helpful. I am happy and I look forward to returning to Lagos. The fans were awesome and they were very supportive of all the players as well as the warmness of the Nigeria people,” the Russian said.

  • “I want to inspire young athletes with my achievements”

“I want to inspire young athletes with my achievements”

History is indeed in the making for Nigeria at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil as table tennis will put the country on the world and continent maps when Segun Toriola takes part in his seventh Olympic Games as the first African to achieve such feat.

In the history of Nigerian sports, Toriola remains one of the most successful athletes that had won series of laurels for Nigeria at continental and Commonwealth levels. His records as the most decorated athlete in Africa is unequaled while his commitment to the business of Nigeria cannot be over-emphasized.

The 41 year-old was a very sad man on Wednesday when he said that despite all his efforts to put Nigeria on global map, there has not been any national recognition for his efforts but the erstwhile African king believes his achievement is sports should serve as inspiration for upcoming athletes.

When Segun Toriola joined the league on athletes listed among the seventh heaven in table tennis, it was celebrated across the globe by current and ex-table tennis stars. But despite several accolades that greeted his qualification for a seventh consecutive Olympic Game, there has not been any national recognition for the African legend.

A nation that has conferred national honours on football players that won a cadet competition is yet to deem it fit to recognise the efforts of an athlete that has given more than three decades to serve his fatherland with a lot of international medals to show for it.

In the midst of this, a saddened Toriola said: “It is sad that my country has not deemed it fit to recognise my efforts.  I know that if I had been a Briton, I should have been conferred with a national honour by the Queen of England. I think this is not too good for the country as this might discourage upcoming athletes. But I most times take solace in the fact that the country gave me the platform to enter into the annals of history,” he lamented.

Segun-ToriolaIn Africa, Toriola remains a role model for athletes as his comportment as well as commitment to the Nigeria project cannot be questioned. His unassuming disposition towards wearing the colours of Nigeria has endeared him to the hearts of many across the globe.

Recalling how his journey to stardom at the Olympic Games, Toriola said: “I could still recollect my first appearance at the Olympic games in Barcelona 1992 where I was the youngest member of Nigeria table tennis team that has greats like Atanda Musa and Yomi Bankole. I qualified for the doubles event while Musa and Bankole played in the singles. In those days, the qualification system for the Olympics was a bit harder and I managed to make the cut for Africa. It was a moment I will never forget particularly playing at the biggest stage alongside some of my idols in the sport.”

For Toriola, qualifying for the Olympics is the peak in the career of every athlete and he emphasized that the Olympics is the biggest platform for athletes to showcase their talents to the whole world.

“I am so surprised when I hear people asking about what have I won at the Olympics? But they must realise that going to the Olympics never comes on a platter of gold as one has to qualify to be at the Olympics. Some of the world’s successful athletes never compete at the Olympics. So for me playing at the seventh Olympics was not something I envisaged when I went to my first Olympics. But what kept the dream ignited in me was the fact that I wanted to emulate some of my idols in the sport.

“I used to look up to Atanda and Yomi because they were the legends of the game.  Apart from playing along them in major competitions, they were great players that most of us wanted to emulate as I used to sleep with their pictures while I follow across the world. So for me I wanted to be like these great stars, and this was what spurred me on in the sport.”

In Rio, the former African champion believes nothing is possible as every participant has an equal chance to make it to the podium based on the new playing format been applied by ITTF.

“I believe that we have a chance to do something better in Rio because every country has the chance to make it to the podium. If countries like England can claimed bronze at the World Championship, nothing stops us to doing more in Brazil. In Rio I want to make my country proud and we can do well with the present form of Aruna Quadri, who has established himself as one of the world’s most respected table tennis players,” he added.

For him, playing at the Olympic Games is reserved for the best. “People should also realise that Olympics is for the best in the world. Nigeria should realise that any athlete that makes it to the Olympics should be commended, as not many great athletes feature at the Olympics.”

For his three decades service to Nigeria, Toriola has never been involved in controversy or scandal as his patriotism overrides any other thing. On countless occasions, he has spent his hard-earned resources to represent Nigeria in major competitions when he plied his trade in Italy, Belgium while making France has his second home.

For Toriola, all his achievements in table tennis should be able to inspire the upcoming players to aim high in life. “I must confess that I want young players to see my achievements in sports as an inspiration for them to aim for the top in their sports. I still want to be around table tennis so that I can help the younger players but Rio will surely be my last Olympic Games.”

  • Toriola’s comeback thrills fans at ITTF premier lotto Nigeria open

That Segun Toriola is still relevant to table tennis in Nigeria and Africa became obvious yesterday when the former African champion rallied from behind to beat Portugal’s Diogo Carvalho 4-3 in the main draw of the ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open.

From the start of the match, it was as if the young Portuguese wanted to break the heart of the home fans with his superb style of play which most times confused Toriola.

The Portuguese took charge of the encounter but like an old warlord that never die, Toriola threw the hall into frenzy when he rallied to level up at 2-2 and took charge of the game. But the Portuguese again won the fifth game but Toriola was in the driving seat from the sixth game with two wins to claim a 4-3 victory.

A disappointed Carvalho said: “When the match was 2-2 I was still confidence that I can win but I discovered that he changed his service and this made it difficult for me. I think he was more experienced than me and this showed in the match. Playing against Toriola in such manner has really increased my confidence. It is painful I lost the match but for me I am satisfied with my performance in the tournament.”

Also yesterday, Bode Abiodun advanced to the last 16 with a 4-2 win over Wale Fagbamila while Ojo Onaolapo was shown the exit by Portugal’s ZHAO Tianming with a 4-0 bashing.

The star player of the day was Tobi Falana who edged seeded Ghanaian, Felix Lartey with a 4-2 win.

The tournament continues today with crucial matches expected to be played in the U-21, doubles and singles events

  • ITTF Nigeria Open: It’s Nigeria time to clinch titles – Toriola

ITTF Nigeria Open: It’s Nigeria time to clinch titles – Toriola

Twice Nigerian players have made it to the final of the ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open but they have not been able to clinch the title, and with just a few days to the kick off, former African champion, Segun Toriola believes the title will not be beyond the reach of Nigerian players.

Toriola, a finalist in the 2013 edition of the competition, said he is optimistic that Nigerian players have the wherewithal to claim the laurel but three-time winner, Egypt’s Omar Assar has been ‘extra-ordinary lucky’ to have claimed the titles ahead of the local players.

“I think Nigerian players have always been capable of winning the title in all the three editions of the competition. It was just that we were unlucky not to have won the title, having made it to the final twice. I played the final in 2013 and Aruna Quadri made it to the final in 2015. Apart from this, Nigerian players have always been making it to the semifinal stage. I believe we can win the title this year because most of the foreign-based players have been doing very well in their various clubs and the skills and talents of the local players cannot be underestimated,” he said.

The former Commonwealth champion who will be attending his seventh Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil was, however, thrilled with the turnout of players, particularly participants from Europe and this he says would help raise the standard of the sport in Nigeria. “I believe the presence of players across the globe, particularly the ones from Europe will surely help our players who have not been playing against Europeans. The eyes of the world are now on Nigeria with the giant stride the country has made in the last four years by hosting such quality competition. I am hopeful that our players will surely gain from taking part in the tournament and the profile of the sport will continue to improve in the country,” he added.

Rio Olympics: Nigeria, Egypt brace up for ITTF World Team Championships

The battle for Africa’s sole ticket in the team event of Rio 2016 Olympics will be ignited when the two best teams in the continental – Nigeria and Egypt begin their campaign at the ITTF World Team Championships holding in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

With the two teams presenting a strong side in Malaysia after the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup in Sudan.

For Segun Toriola of Nigeria, the battle for the sole slot between Nigeria and Egypt would be a tough challenge.

“Being a team event tournament, I think we need to use this competition to improve the country’s ranking as well as fight for the sole slot of the continent to be able to play in the team event of the Olympics. Personally, my target in Malaysia is to improve Nigeria team ranking but if we talking about winning for Rio team event  ticket, for now I cannot say it is possible or not but is 50/50 chance and I believe if we all play very good and luck on team side, it is possible we make it,” Toriola said.

Also, Egypt’s Dina Meshref believes they have the wherewithal to make it to division one of the women event. “I hope my team (women’s) could upgrade to division 1 this year. I believe we are capable of doing so even though it will require huge efforts from all the team members. It’s a tough challenge but we all hope we can do it. Our target is to perform very well in all matches, and upgrade to division 1 (the championship division).”

On the Olympics team event qualification, the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup champion said: “I believe our team can win the sole slot to represent Africa in the next Olympics because our ranking as a team is good enough until now to qualify us to play the teams event in Rio. I hope we can make it.”
