AFCON 2025: Ajayi grabs MOTM Award as Super  Eagles edge Taifa Stars

Nigeria defender Semi Ajayi was deservedly named Man of the Match after a dominant all-round display that anchored the Super Eagles’ hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania in their opening Group C clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The centre-back combined defensive authority with attacking impact, breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute when he powered home a towering header from Alex Iwobi’s precise cross. The goal underlined Ajayi’s growing influence at both ends of the pitch and set Nigeria on course for a crucial opening win.

Beyond his goal, Ajayi was a commanding presence at the heart of defence, reading danger early, winning aerial battles and organising a back line that came under sustained pressure from a lively Tanzanian side determined to cause an upset.

Even after Tanzania drew level shortly after the restart, the West Bromwich Albion defender remained composed, helping the Super Eagles steady themselves during a tense spell before Ademola Lookman’s superb strike restored Nigeria’s lead.

Ajayi’s performance was capped by a series of vital interceptions and last-ditch clearances late in the game, as Tanzania pushed for another equaliser in the closing stages.

The Man of the Match award crowned a memorable night for Ajayi, whose goal was his second for Nigeria following his strike in a 2023 World Cup qualifier. With the Super Eagles provisionally top of Group C and tougher tests against Tunisia and Uganda ahead, his assured display will provide confidence that Nigeria’s defensive spine is beginning to click at the right time.

Hull City coach  laments departure of Semi Ajayi  for AFCON 2025

Coach Sergej Jakirovic has admitted that losing Semi Ajayi to the Africa Cup of Nations will be a significant blow to Hull  City even as he challenged other defenders to prove their worth in the absence of the Nigeria international.

Ajayi is set to be absent for up to a month after linking up with Nigeria following City’s 3–1 victory away at Millwall on Saturday.

Ajayi  has  now turned  his attention to  the AFCON as the Super Eagles aim to improve on their runner-up finish in 2024 and go all the way in the tournament.

While representing one’s country at AFCON is a major milestone for African players, the December–January schedule often leaves clubs in the Premier League and Championship short-handed, a situation Hull have faced before.

Jakirovic acknowledged the challenge but accepted the reality of international football, noting that AFCON holds the same prestige for African nations as the European Championship does in Europe. He also expressed pride in having a full international in his squad and wished Ajayi success with the Super Eagles.

In Ajayi’s absence, the Croatian coach has thrown down the gauntlet to the rest of his defensive unit, naming Charlie Hughes, John Egan, Akin Famewo and promising youngster Cathal McCarthy as players who now have a chance to gain valuable minutes and stake a claim in the team.

Ajayi will also head into the tournament with added motivation after Nigeria’s recent World Cup qualification heartbreak, having lost a play-off final to DR Congo on penalties. Despite missing a crucial spot-kick in that shootout, Jakirovic offered words of encouragement, reminding his defender that taking responsibility is part of the game and urging him to move on and focus on the challenge ahead.

Ajayi opens  Hull City goal account in  win over Stoke

Super Eagles and Hull City defender Semi Ajayi scored his first goal for the club in their narrow 2-1 win over Stoke City on Saturday.

The 32-year-old made the headlines for the wrong reasons just less than two weeks ago after his missed penalty cost Nigeria a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, it appears all that is water off the duck’s feather for the former Arsenal centre-back as he celebrated his goal with vim this afternoon.

Starting two games in a row at the bet365 Stadium, the lanky defender opened his goalscoring account just three minutes into the second half, although Welsh winger Sorba Thomas already broke the deadlock in the 17th minute.

The Nigerian headed the Tigers’ level after substitute Mohamed Belloumi had diverted Joe Gelhardt’s wayward volley into his path.

Ajayi struggled with hamstring problems after joining Hull, and Sergej Jakirovic’s men had lost their previous two Championship games against Queens Park Rangers and Ipswich Town before their game this afternoon.

However, it was Leeds United loanee Joe Gelhardt who scored the goal that ended Hull’s winless streak.

Mohamed Belloumi turned provider again, feeding the 23-year-old Englishman inside the left channel to finish beyond Viktor Johansson and give City another win over the Potters.

After battling to stay afloat in the Championship last season, Hull City are currently 7th, two points off Stoke City, who are in second place.

    Ajayi returns for Hull City

HULL City head coach Sergej Jakirović has provided a positive update on the fitness of Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi, indicating when the centre-back is likely to return to action.

Ajayi, who joined the Tigers as a free agent this summer following the expiration of his contract with West Brom, sustained a hamstring injury in the aftermath of his side’s Championship opener against Coventry City, where he put in a commanding performance to help secure a goalless draw.

The injury ruled him out of three consecutive Championship fixtures and also cost him a place in Nigeria’s squad for this month’s back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

Hull City secured a clean sheet on Ajayi’s debut, but his absence has since been felt, with the Tigers conceding nine goals in three league matches – an average of three per game.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s Championship clash with Swansea City, Jakirović confirmed that another London-born Nigerian centre-back Akin Famewo has rejoined the squad after a spell on the sidelines.

Injured Ajayi ruled out of World Cup qualifier

Hull City’s centre-back Semi Ajayi has torn his hamstring for the third time in nine months.

The 31-year-old initially tore his hamstring back in November when he was at West Brom. The same injury recurred during his recovery process in February.

He returned to full fitness towards the end of the season, but his injury problems convinced the Baggies hierarchy against renewing a deal for Ajayi.

Ajayi delivered a dominant display in Hull City’s goalless draw against Coventry City on Saturday, and reported some discomfort in his hamstring after the game in the Midlands.

Hull Daily Mail reports that the ex-Arsenal man will miss between four to six weeks of football action as he recuperates from another hamstring tear.

The news comes as a big blow to the Tigers, to Ajayi, and to the Super Eagles of Nigeria. This is because the injury rules out one of his trusted defenders from participating in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria have important games against Rwanda and South Africa and needs all hands on deck, although there’s a pool of options to choose from aside from William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey, who’ve earned the Frenchman’s trust.

The time of Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has come to an end at English club West Bromwich Albion.

Semi Ajayi, who has been recalled to the Super Eagles for the Unity Cup in London, has not been retained by West Brom after his contract with the club ran out.

The 31-year-old defender played 177 times across all competitions, 15 of those outings came in an injury-hit 2024/2025 campaign.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have suffered a significant blow ahead of their 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe as West Brom have confirmed that defender Semi Ajayi has suffered another hamstring injury, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria are condemned to win their next two games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers next month.

The Super Eagles picked up three goals in their first four games in the qualifiers, putting them in a difficult position.

Nonetheless, Nigeria coach Eric Chelle still has a good shot at staging a comeback due to the quality in the squad. However, he might have to do without one of his star defenders.

This is as Ajayi has suffered a hamstring injury again. The former Rotherham man just returned to action two weeks ago after spending the previous four months on the sidelines.

But now, the 31-year-old centre-back has been ruled out of action for several weeks due to the hamstring issue.

Ajayi, Maja to get new coach at West Brom

Super Eagles duo Semi Ajayi and Josh Maja will play under coaches at West Brom following the departure of Carlos Corberán, to Spanish La Liga side Valencia.

In an official statement, West Brom confirmed Corberán’s exit: “Albion have reached an agreement in principle for Carlos Corberán to depart the club to pursue a new opportunity with La Liga side Valencia.

“The 41-year-old returns to his homeland with the club’s gratitude and best wishes following a two-year tenure at The Hawthorns. Chris Brunt, Damia Abella, and Boaz Myhill will oversee first-team duties until further notice.

“Sporting Director Andrew Nestor is leading Albion’s search for a new head coach. The club will make no further comment at this time.”

Corberán, who joined West Brom in 2022, significantly improved the club’s performance. He guided them to the promotion playoffs last season and initially led the team to the top of the Championship table this season. However, a dip in form has seen the Baggies fall to seventh place.

Nigeria internationals Maja and Ajayi thrived under Corberán’s guidance. Maja, in particular, has been in fine form, contributing 10 goals and two assists in 22 Championship appearances this season.

SEMI AJAYI: Why I dropped academics for football

West Bromwich Albion and Nigeria first team player Semi Ajayi may be down after cupping a hamstring injury in the second half of the club’s encounter with Cardiff City two weekends ago, but he’s not out in any way. He says he misses the game but optimistic that he would be back in no time. “It’s tough to be out for four months. However I’m in good hands. I’m optimistic that the surgery will be successful and in no time I’ll be back.” According to manager Carlos Corberán; “Semi, unfortunately, has suffered a more difficult injury. It was an action which was an accident. In this action, he has broken his muscle in two parts. “The best way to manage this injury is with surgery because surgery helps reduce the risk of suffering this type of injury again.

“There are injuries which affect the tendon in specific areas where you have to have surgery. The surgery delays things by around two weeks, but it also reduces the risk of the injury reoccurring.

“Returning in about 16 weeks is the approximate time when you have this type of surgery.

Unfortunately, Corberan is facing weeks without Ajayi and two other regular defenders.

“Kyle Bartley has had an injury and he has had minor surgery this week. It’s a different type of surgery. It’s a more positive one because it cleans the problem that he had in his knee.

“We have been very positive with this but the time from surgery to recovery is around four to six weeks.

“We are talking about three specific centre-backs who have had injuries at the same time, all within a week. It is what it is and it will be a challenge for us as a team and for individuals too.

“However, we still have players who can play in that position. Players such as Torbjørn Heggem, who has been playing at left-back. We know he can find his level as a centre-back in a line of three of four.

“Mason Holgate is another player who is similar to Heggem and someone who we consider as both a centre-back and a full-back. He can manage this position too.

“We have players here who can allow me to keep playing with a line of four despite the three injuries, or we can find alternatives in a line of five at the back.

“We have other players who can fill in positions such as Ousmane Diakité and Gianluca Frabotta.

“It’s true that we now have a time which is challenging in terms of our defenders, but we will find solutions. Our defensive players have been playing very well and that meant other players didn’t have many opportunities to play. The players who weren’t playing many minutes are very good players and they will now get their opportunity in the team.

“We now have a challenge as a team to keep showing solidarity in our defensive positions.

“Elsewhere, when Daryl suffered his original injury we hoped he’d be back before Christmas. The new muscle injury will now mean he will return after Christmas.

While on the side line, Ajayi has time to reflect on how far he has come in his career says he has reasons to be gracious.

    TRIAL UPON TRIAL

Semi’s career has been intriguing from his trials with Ajax, Arsenal and West Brom and from setting aside a sparkling academic career for soccer; the Albion centre-back has been a model of consistency and excellence since arriving at The Hawthorne.

A sparkling student, he decided to set aside his academic achievements to focus on a career in football and, like his defensive partner Kyle Bartley, has arrived at the Club via a circuitous route around the various levels of English football. He’s now an established Nigerian international and is flourishing with the Baggies.

“I was born in Croydon but just after my brother was born, when I was two, we moved to Thamesmead where I grew up. I suppose it was a bit of a rough area and my mum and dad really made sure me and my brother worked hard at school and studies and didn’t have chance to get into any trouble. Football, though, was a big part of my life – and my brother’s – and as we grew older it became a big part of dad’s life too! He would have to run us everywhere to play games.

“Going to Charlton at 16 was a big moment for me because it would mean leaving school and my academic career. But my parents left the decision to me. I had really good grades and football definitely represented a bigger risk. But that was what I wanted to do and they stood by my decision. My mum (Dayo) was born in the UK but moved back to Nigeria where she met my Dad (Biyi)… yes, mum and dad did a lot for me and my brother Fikayo who was just as keen on football. Between us, dad would be taking us to football six days a week.

“Charlton was really good for me. I got a great football education at Charlton but the one thing that I couldn’t see was a pathway to the first team. What I needed most of all, I felt, was first-team football and I left to go in search of a club where I might be able to get it. I had trials all over that summer: Sunderland, Ipswich, Arsenal, Cardiff, and Ajax.

“But Rotherham was the first place I found a home in football. At other places I always felt I was playing for my parent club and not the team I was in. But at Rotherham I really settled down and became a main part of the team and at last I got that regular first-team football I knew I needed.”

Ajayi says his allegiance has always been with Nigeria and not England, his country of birth.

“The decision was made a long time ago. I decided to play for the Under-20s when I was 19 and the goal was always to play for the first team. As a youngster, we would go there every two years to visit my mum and dad’s families… it was nice to meet my grandparents and all my cousins. It’s a really nice country; mum’s family is in Lagos. She makes Nigerian food at home but it’s different when you go out there and get the real thing. The ingredients are that bit fresher I think. It’s lovely food; I really enjoy it. Nigerians love their football and they are becoming more aware of me now that I am playing a lot more consistently with the national team. They know about Albion of course but they love the Premier League – all the Premier League players are worshipped out there.”

Ajayi dreams of returning to Premier League action. “I would say play in the Premier League consistently and that’s obviously something I would like to do here with Albion. That would be in there. And definitely play in the World Cup. And win the African Nations Cup. All three would be excellent.”

He was close to getting the African trophy early this year playing all minutes of all the matches en route to final only to finish in second place with Nigeria. Hosts country Cote d’ Ivoire came back from behind to beat Nigeria 2-1.

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan said Ajayi will need surgery.

“Semi, unfortunately, has suffered a more difficult injury. It was an action which was an accident. In this action, he has broken his muscle in two parts,” he disclosed.
