  • Oluwo plans seminar for youths intending to travel overseas

    The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Adewale Akanbi, Telu I, is planning a seminar on legal processes and procedures for young Nigerians to travel and relocate to foreign countries.

    The monarch said the seminar is part of activities to mark his third anniversary on throne.

    In a statement by his press secretary, Alli Ibrahim, the Oluwo said there will also be distribution of food items, including rice, beans, noddles, garri, milk, among others, to widows and orphans in Iwo Federal Constituency of Osun State to mark the anniversary.

    According to Oba Akanbi, the seminar holding on Wednesday 16th January, 2019, in Iwo, will expose aspiring Nigerians, especially the youths, to “regimented procedures” of securing access to advanced countries.

    The Oluwo said he will impact on the youths through his vast experience of tours of many great countries of the world.

    The monarch, who noted that there are ample opportunities overseas for youths to make them expand their human development capacity, maintained that the programme will be an eye opener for them to improve themselves and be ready to add value to Nigeria.

    The Oluwo said he will always ensure he raises the hope of the hopeless in the society, adding that the third anniversary is to restore optimism of travelling abroad for the youths and providing a platform for the widows and orphans to access quality life.

    He stated that the anniversary succours are part of his short-term programmes for his constituents, assuring beneficiaries of more fruitful future as his long-term plans are ripe for fruitfulness.

    Oba Akanbi condemned reported cases of aspiring youths falling victims of swindlers while trying to secure access to foreign countries. He, therefore, said that “accurate enlightenment” for prospective immigrants will decimate the occurrence.

    He said that the training will intimate participants with countries and their associated prospects, challenges and most importantly means of survival after securing access. He implored prospective participants to come to the seminar with their laptops or tablets.

     

  • ISGPP holds seminar on corruption

    THE Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy (ISGPP) will hold a seminar on Governance and Corruption tomorrow at the school hall.

    The guest speaker at the seminar, entitled: “Constitutional foundations of political corruption in Nigeria”, is Prof.  Rotimi Suberu from Bennington College, Vermont, United States of America (USA). The lead discussants are: Dr. David Enweremadu of the Department of Political Science and Dr. Muyiwa Adigun of the Faculty of Law both of the University of Ibadan.

    According to the institute’s Programme and Research Manager, Mr. Tobechukwu Nneli, the seminar will analyse issues such as effects of corruption on political institutions and examine constitutional reform strategies for curtailing political corruption in Nigeria.

    Nneli, who observed that weak political institutions remain a key factor for corruption in Nigeria, promised that the seminar will identify cogent factors responsible for endemic corruption in the country as well proffer solutions.

    Professor emeritus Akin Mabogunje is expected at the seminar and Prof. Ayo Olukotun of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, is the chairman.

  • Seminar on modelling holds in Lagos

    A seminar on entrepreneurial skills will hold between May 21 and 25 at the Ember Creek, Lekki, Lagos.

    The seminar, according to the organiser and facilitator, Mrs Joan Okorodudu, “is to teach aspiring models and practising ones the basics about the industry so they will know what they are getting into.”

    Mrs Okorodudu, the Managing Director of Isis Models, said: “We want to change the mind-sets of people who are either running the modelling industry or young models who are upcoming or those there already. We want to teach models about contract, certain entrepreneurial skills which will come in handy by the time they retire from modelling or when jobs are scarce.”

    Some of these skills, she said, include styling, make up, designing, hair styling, photography, acting among others.

    The seminar, she said, will enable models and designers to showcase their skills.

    “Basically, we want to teach models how to become entrepreneurs. We want models who can make money from other means. Models need to know what they are getting in the industry. The modelling career is short – between 10 and 15 years. Not everyone can be Naomi Campbell with a long career.

     

     

  • Catholic lawyers to hold seminar

    The National Association of Catholic Lawyers (NACL), Lagos Archdiocese will hold its fourth professional development seminar and colloquium on Saturday.

    It will hold at the Colonades Hotel, 21 Kingsway Road, Ikoyi, by 9am. The colloquium will begin by 11.30am.

    The theme is: Exploring emerging areas of law practice.

    Managing Director, DCSL Corporate Services Limited, Mrs Bisi Adeyemi will speak on the opportunities available to lawyers in 21st Century Law Practice.

    Mr Emeka Ndu, vice chairman, C & I Leasing Plc will cover developments in his area of specialisation. He is expected to address participants from the viewpoint of a corporate body requiring the services of in-house and external counsel in modern business transactions.

    The afternoon session will be a colloquium on The Nigeria, its people, desire, deserve and demand – The citizen’s and government’s collective task of building a sustainable, responsive and accountable new Nigeria.

    The Lead Speaker will be Prof Pat Utomi.

    As part of the theme, Akin Oyebode, a  Professor of International Law and Jurisprudence, University of Lagos, will be speaking on A People’s Constitution as an instrument of growth and development in a new Nigeria.

    Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Abuja Director Ms Idayat Hassan will address the colloquium on building strong  democratic institutions: An Imperative for the common good in Nigeria.

    Recognising the importance of Knowledge, Youth and the role of Religion and Ethnicity in the search for a viable Nigeria,

    Dr Chi Chi Aniagolu Okoye of Wateraid, a not-for-profit organisation, headquartered in London, will speak on “Education in the search for effective leadership in Nigeria.”

  • Babcock Varsity holds seminar on artificial intelligence

    The role of artificial intelligence in transforming business and process design was the focus of a seminar organised by the Babcock University Computer Club (BUCC) at Ilishan-Remo in Ogun State.

    The seminar, with the them: Artificial Intelligence: The Automation Revolution, was coordinated by BUCC’s executive members.

    Keynote speaker and a senior lecturer in the department, Dr Omotunde, defined artificial intelligence (AI) as the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.

    He said: “Machines think faster than humans and can be employed to carry out dangerous tasks. Their parameters, unlike humans, can be adjusted. We can consider gaming to be the most common use of the benefits of artificial intelligence. It becomes important part of our daily life. Our life is changed by AI because this technology is used in a wide area of day to day services.

    “Researchers and developers are using the theories to create applications in image recognition, speech recognition, medication diagnosis, financial predictions, statistical analysis and more. So, it’s no wonder that AI and machine-learning are also coming to the world of web design.”

    Olumiyiwa Folorunsho of ICT Section of Stanbic IBTC said the AI revolution had become a common thread running through the mobile tech world.

    Afolayan Fisayo, a software developer at hotels.ng, said AI and machine-learning were being used in all industries.

     

  • Seminar on port charges holds in Lagos

    The Shipping Correspondents  Association of Nigeria (SCAN) seminar will hold in Lagos on Thursday.

    The seminar will discuss various charges at the seaports. Its theme is: “Port charges, how plausible”.

    A financial expert and research analyst, Johnson Chukwu, will be the keynote speaker.

    The seminar, according to its promoters, is borne out of a series of complaints by operators, regulators, shippers, clearing agents and others over the exorbitant charges they claimed were fuelling diversion.

    According to one of the organisers, Yusuf Babalola, the seminar will proffer solutions to a myriad of challenges facing shippers, terminal operators, clearing agents, importers, government agencies, truck drivers and other stakeholders.

    “The summit is not a buck or blame passing summit, but it will find a solution to cost of doing business that is fuelling cargo diversion,”the organisers said.

    Another member of the group, Mr Tola Adenubi, said the objective of the seminar was to make the seaports competitive and attractive for business.

    “It is observed that about 90 percent of vessels berthing at  Benin,Togo, Ghana and other neighbouring ports, have cargoes destined for Nigeria, but the inability to get our charges right has made Nigeria to lose the traffic to smaller ports in West Africa. But the seminar is to address this by making the ports the hub in West and Central Africa,” Adenubi said.

    Group begins nationwide security seminar

    The Police Assistance Committee (PAC) has embarked on holding intense security seminars/workshops in all major markets throughout the country in its efforts to co-ordinate members to keep assisting security agencies in the country through information dissemination.

    The security seminar with the theme: “Intensifying Information Dissemination/ Intelligence Gathering in Collaboration with Security Agencies” is being targeted at chairmen, secretaries, and PROs of all markets/traders associations and artisans in all our major markets and chief security officers (CSOs) of private and public establishments, including local governments.

    And to facilitate this massive nationwide security seminar which requires huge financial input, the PAC, in a statement signed by its Director- General, Dr. Martins John Oni, strongly appealed to the Office of the President to encourage revenue-generation government agencies like the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), NNPC and the like to support the programme financially for continuity.

    Dr. Oni emphasized that the mega-markets seminars/workshops are designed to keep mobilizing marketers and traders at the grassroots towards passing timely and useful information to keep assisting security agencies in crime prevention and combating which the PAC has been doing over two decades ago.

    The PAC boss stressed the importance of governmental directives to government agencies such as the Customs, NNPC, NPA and the like to keep partnering the PAC through financial support for continuity and success of the programme.

  • Seminar to ensure creation of mega food park to hold next month

    The 1st annual international seminar on Comprehensive Local Agricultural Plan C-PLAN will hold in Abuja on October 26.

    The seminar among other things aims at bringing out workable blueprint to boost the agricultural sector.

    It will also ensure the creation of mega food park across the thirty six states and the Federal Capital Territory.

    Dr. Tanciy Joshi, Project Head, C-LAP, who spoke with newsmen in Abuja said C-LAP is an integrated and participatory action plan for the development of LGAs in agriculture and allied sectors and is meant to prepare a Comprehensive Local Agriculture Plan (C-LAP) through participatory process involving various organizations and stakeholders.

    He said it also establishes linkages with the required institutional support services, like credit, technology transfer, ICT, research and evolve an action plan for achieving sustainable agricultural growth with food security and cropping system that will improve farmers’ income.

    Prof. Mohammad Auwal Hussaini, a member of the local organizing committee, also said that C-LAP will also lead to the creation of a mega food park for agricultural processing in each state, a network of structured farmer’s market in each LGA for the sale of farm produce and a branded grocery retail chain that will be franchised across the country.

    According to him, the ultimate aim of ALGON is to take this mammoth agricultural enterprise to the Capital Market in 5 years and said the plan which has since begun to show signs of fruitfulness involves the 774 LGAs in the 36 States of the federation for the five year period.

    “The partner in the initiative, C-LAP on its part assesses current agricultural potential in each LGA by understanding its production patterns, marketing and other factors that will either constrain or provide opportunities for future growth of agriculture and advice ALGON based on that”.

    He said realizing the importance of involving the grassroots, the Nigeria Governors Forum under the leadership of the Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulazzez Yari has keyed into initiative and have lent their support to the project and this has gone a long way to drive the initiative to the point where it is able to impact positively on the economy.

    Doctors in Diaspora to hold seminar on infectious diseases

    Doctors in Diaspora are to hold, for the first time in Nigeria, their yearly global infectious diseases initiative today at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos.

    The event is being facilitated by Dr. Folarin Olubowale, a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.

    He said this is 10th edition of the semiar and that it is aimed at helping them to find ways to eradicate the  diseases.

    The decision to hold the first African edition in Nigeria, instead of the United States, where it had been holding, he said, was  to enable doctors tackle infectious diseases.

    The event will feature lectures by medical practitioners and the focus will be to create awareness on the diseases, seek collaboration, and scholarship funding; develop a centre of excellence for infectious diseases in the country.

    A 2.5-credit point will be awarded to participating medical students for their continuous medical education (CME) training.

    Speakers expected are Dr. Regis Nadin, an Haitian-American emergency medicine physician; Dr. Yoav Golan, a practitioner at Tufts Medical Centre, Boston, Massachussetts , US and Prof Folashade Tolulope Ogunsola of the Clinical Microbiology Deparment at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

    According to Public Health Physician, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Dr. Chira Udoka, the seminar will equip participants with the expertise to manage some  diseases.

    “Nigeria is chosen because we want to give back to our homeland. That  is why we, in the western world, know that we are not immune to these diseases. The initiative will help to showcase control strategies, prevention and control; so, it does not go around.

    “The recent findings on diseases, such as malaria, Ebola, and meningitis, which Nigeria will benefit from, will help us to know what we are dealing with,” Udoka said.
