• Men have role to play in entrenching women’s rights — Tinubu

Sen. Oluremi Tinubu says men have a role to play to adequately entrench the rights of women, abrogate gender-based violence and ensure equal opportunities for all.

Tinubu, senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, expressed the view in a statement in Lagos on Thursday, on the commemoration of the 2019 International Women’s Day.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)  reports that the International Women’s Day is commemorated every March 8, to celebrate women’s achievement, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality.

The theme for this year ‘s International Women’s Day is  ‘Balance for Better’.

address issues of gender disparity and bias.

She said: “I celebrate with Nigerian Women all over the world on the occasion of the International Women’s Day, 2019.

“Beyond the recognition of the struggles and achievements of womenfolk, it is a celebration of womanhood – her strength, resilience, power and doggedness.

” The commemoration is a pointer to the way forward in the quest for the protection of rights of women and a reminder that we must devise new strategies in the pursuit of gender equity and balance.

“Conscripting men into gender-based discussions and actions will enable us address issues of gender disparity, equality in every strata of life, ensure gender balance in government, employment, remuneration of employees and wealth creation.

“Thus, I enjoin men to speak up in support of Women. Gender balance will benefit us all and our Nation as a whole.”

Tinubu urged Nigerian women to rise up and equip themselves to fill gaps in politics, public office, and management.

“This can only be done if we are all ready to make a difference, speak up for worthy causes and impact on our immediate communities, the type of change we wish to see.

  • Tinubu tasks women on governance

Sen. Oluremi Tinubu on Tuesday urged women to help and mentor each other to enable them hold more political positions in the country.

Tinubu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that women in positions should mentor other women to enable more women get to the top politically.

According to her, a woman who wants to aspire for an office, has to prepare herself and vie for positions.

“You have to fight for power. You have to be on ground.

“When officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) came during the Presidential and National Assembly elections, they met me at the queue at 9 a.m. which showed dedication.

“It takes a lot of price and sacrifice to aspire for higher office; it is not about sentiments.

“Why do we have too many males in managerial positions; women have to prove themselves to be able to appear.

“People got to know me when my husband was a governor and I was the first lady. Every opportunity I had to serve, I took it seriously.

“I see every opportunity as a call of God and I try to put in my best and I am not faint-hearted when it comes to hard-work,’’ Tinubu said.

  • Why estate was named after Tinubu – Borno Gov

Why estate was named after Tinubu – Borno Gov

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno on Tuesday said he named an estate after APC Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in appreciation of his role in ensuring transparent primaries in the state APC chapter during the 2015 general elections.

Shettima was speaking in Maiduguri at the inauguration on Monday and Tuesday by Tinubu of development projects executed by his administration.
The projects included 432 houses, 13 primary and junior secondary schools as well as a fully furnished ‎estate with 26 apartments in five blocks of three-storey buildings for medical doctors, named ‘Bola Tinubu Court’.
The governor recalled that his success in taking control of the Borno APC in 2015 was largely because Tinubu refused to support the game plan of a wealthy tyrant that fought hard to seize the Borno APC as his personal estate.

“For us in Borno State APC, I must confess, that we owe our political freedom and independence to not only our firmness but importantly, to the wisdom and sincerity of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“Someone had sought to know our reasons not for inviting Tinubu for commissioning of projects but for naming a project after him in Borno State.

“I replied the person in five words by saying `it is our show of gratitude’. Naturally, the person asked me, gratitude in what sense. I explained that after the APC was created in the build up to the 2015 elections, we firmly resisted serious attempts by someone who wanted to completely hijack the entire party machinery with total disregard for our existence.

“But despite our resistance, that person would probably have had some oxygen if he had secured the support of Asiwaju”.

The governor explained that from day one, Tinubu was opposed to political tyranny in the state and was in support of political freedom and democratic liberty.

He said the APC leader showed clear support for the party machinery in Borno rather than pander to the political wishes of a single individual.

According to him, another person who played an important role in Borno politics was President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We had President Muhammadu Buhari’s electrifying popularity to our advantage which significantly helped us during the elections.

“Before the elections, we had the wisdom and sincerity of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who supported us to remain in control of the APC in Borno State, secured our primaries and deployed energies to winning not just the Governorship but also all the three Senatorial, 10 House of Representatives and 28 State Assembly seats in Borno State”.

Shettima said the party in the state was grateful for the APC national leadership for support in what he called the battle of freedom from political tyranny, freedom from a one-man-show, and freedom from politics of being APC in Borno and PDP in Abuja.

Shettima also eulogised Sen Oluremi Tinubu, wife of the APC leader, for what he described as her kindness, humility, dutifulness and Africanness.

    ’23 governors now in APC’

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the National Publicity Secretary of Action Congress of Nigeria, on Friday said 23 governors are already in the fold of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Mohammed spoke in Lagos at the 7th Town Hall Meeting of Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, representing Lagos Central.

He said 12 more governors had signified interest to join the party in addition to the 11 already in the fold.

“The 12 governors will make their declarations after the party has been registered, possibly in two weeks time.

“We are likely to get our registration certificate by the end of June or second week of July,” the ACN spokesman said.

He explained that the delay in submitting the new party’s application to INEC was caused by “the complexity of merging.’’

“Merging is not an easy process, it is complicated. Aside from the name, constitution and logo change, each of the merging parties must hold special conventions to adopt the merger.

“The merger forming APC comprises ACN, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Grand Progressive Alliance (APGA) and the Democratic People’s Party (DPP).”

In her speech, Tinubu, who is the wife of a former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, described APC as “an assurance of hope for Nigeria.’’

She said:“Without the genuine change and development being advocated by our great movement — APC, Nigeria risks further descent into the abyss of underdevelopment and backwardness.’’

On the bill seeking special status for Lagos, the senator said no effort would be spared to achieve it.

Tinubu disclosed that the three senators from Lagos had sponsored a bill seeking provision of financial grants to the state in the constitution, in recognition of its status as the nation’s economic hub.

The News Agency of Nigeria  reports that Tinubu distributed free November/December General Certificate Examination (GCE) forms to 220 youths in the senatorial district.
