  • Senate President: Block votes unlikely as PDP senators split

About seven days to the election of principal officers for the Ninth Senate, there is a major disagreement in the camp of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The split has created a setback for the proposed block votes by the main opposition party against the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Ahmed Lawan.

Lawan looks good for the trophy, with many senators-elect, including those of PDP, joining his campaign train.

Although the final figure was being collated last night, there were indications that the APC candidate might garner about 62 or 63 of the 108 votes available.

The fate of a former Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha is yet to be decided by the court.

Notwithstanding, four APC senators, including  Ali Ndume, Danjuma Goje, Saidu Alkali and one other.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that there has been a major split in the PDP Caucus on block votes when the Senate is inaugurated on June 11.

It was learnt that some PDP senators-elect have opted to vote on principle for Lawan instead of party sentiments.

Others are unhappy that a principal officer of the outgoing National Assembly and some opposition governors decided to dictate to them on who to vote for as the next President of the Senate and other principal officers.

The aggrieved PDP senators-elect alleged that selfish interest, rather than “PDP’s larger common interest”, accounted for the push to vote against APC candidates.

A ranking PDP senator-elect said: “Unlike in 2015 when we had clearly defined agenda, the PDP has no focus this time around on the choice of principal officers. I can assure you that the opposition will not engage in block votes this time around.

“We have not even been given any serious directive by the party. This was not the case in 2015.

“A few of our leaders championing block votes have been doing so to pursue personal agenda. It is absurd to attempt to make principal offices hereditary or to impose leaders on us.

Some of us will rather collaborate in a manner that a constructive opposition will be in place for a greater future for PDP.

“Some PDP senators-elect have elected to have a new Senate with enhanced agenda. They have high regards for Lawan and they will vote for the APC candidate.”

The source claimed that some PDP senators from the Southwest, Northcentral, Southsouth, and the Southeast will join forces with their APC colleagues on Lawan’s project.

The source confirmed that a “former President of the Senate, who is in PDP, has given his blessing to Lawan” in the country’s interest.

Members of the Lawan Campaign Council and strategists yesterday defied the Sallah holidays to “take stock” of those who had signed up to back their candidate.

Although they were still computing the tally, a member of the team said: “More senators-elect have appended their signatures to support Lawan.

“I cannot give you the exact figure now but the situation at hand is far better than it was in 2015. Some PDP senators are part of our campaign this time around because of the vision inherent in it.”

Despite the fact that the final  tally figure was kept under wraps, there were indications that the APC candidate might garner about 62 or 63 out of the 108 votes available.

“We will not hide it; all the senators-elect backing Lawan will surely come out to confirm they belong, “ another source added.

But APC senators-elect have decided to be united with the exception of four.

The four APC senators-elect opposed to Lawan’s leadership are Ali Ndume and Danjuma Goje, who are eyeing Senate President, Alh. Saidu Alkali ( Gombe North) and one other from the North.

A source said: “So far, apart from the four APC senators, our caucus is more united for the election of principal officers than the case four years ago.”

Lawan will tomorrow unveil his legislative agenda for the 9th Senate, The Nation learnt.

A notice by the Chairman, Sen. Ahmad Lawan  Campaign Group, Dr. Yahaya Abdullahi, said the agenda is about “a National Assembly that works for Nigeria”.

  • Court restrains Saraki, others from considering report on 2018 Senate’s invasion

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Bwari has restrained the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and eight others from considering the report of the Senate’s ad-hoc committee set up to probe the April 18, 2018 invasion of the Senate by some unidentified hoodlums.

Justice Othman Musa, in a ruling on Monday, said the restraining order shall remain pending the determination of a suit filed by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, in which he challenged the legitimacy of the ad-hoc committee constituted by the Senate’s leadership on April 25, 2018 in the wake of the invasion, during which the Senate’s mace was also stolen.

Justice Musa said “Leave is granted to the Applicant to serve the 1st – 10th respondents by substituted means, by serving the originating motion and other processes in the suit on any responsible clerk or staff at the office of the Clerk of the National Assembly, at the National Assembly Complex, Three Arms Zone, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja or publishing same processes on any national daily with national circulation.

“Reliefs iii, iv, v, vi are not granted as prayed, in its place, the 1st – 10th respondents are ordered and admonished not to obstruct the cause of justice and abide by the authority in the Supreme Court decision in UBA Plc vs. Ajabule 2011 LPELR 8239 SC and Military Governor, Lagos State vs. Ojukwu.

“To this end, the respondents, their servants, agents, officers, privies, sergeants at arms or whosoever are restrained from taking any further action on this subject matter, and to maintain the status quo as of today, pending the hearing of the originating motion.

“Originating motion and all pending applications are fixed to the 13th day of May, 2019 for definite hearing. Case is adjourned to the 13th day of May 2019 for definite hearing. “

Listed as 1st to 10th defendants include: The President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Deputy Senate President, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Reps, Senator Ahmed Lawan (Senate Leader), Senator Bala Na’Allah (Chairman, joint ad-hoc committee investigating the Invasion of the National Assembly on the 18th of April 2018 and the theft thereof of the mace) for himself and on behalf of all other members of the committee.

Others are: Hon. Betty Apiafi (Co-Chairman Chairman, joint ad-hoc committee investigating the Invasion of the National Assembly on the 18th of April 2018 and the theft thereof of the mace), the Clerk of the National assembly, the Clerk of the Senate and the Clerk of the House of Reps.

Omo-Agege stated, in the suit marked: BW/M/204/2019, that Saraki had, before setting up the ad-hoc committee, told the press that he (Omo-Agege) was responsible for the invasion.

He argued that by so acting, the Senate President has prejudged the outcome of the investigation by the committee.

The Senator wants the court to, among others, declare that, by virtue of Section 14(2) of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act, 2017 it is ultra vires of the power of the respondents and unlawful for them to reprimand or suspend him from service of the legislative house to the end of legislative session which date is on or about Thursday. the 6th day of June. 2019.

He also seeks a declaration that the attempt to try, indict. suspend, humiliate and destroy the political career of the applicant by the respondents and their agents without any verifiable proof of the applicant committing any known offence and without justifiable legal reasons whatsoever is not in accordance with the procedure permitted by law and ipso facto iIlegal, unlawful and unconstitutional.

Omo-Agege is praying the court for an order of perpetual injunction  restraining the Senate President, the House of Reps’ Speaker, the Deputy Senate President, The Deputy Speaker, the Clerks of the National Assembly, the Senate and House of Reps (listed as 1st, 2nd, 3rd. 4th, 8th, 9th and 10th respondents)  and their  agents “from further inquiring into, investigating, hearing or determining any issue whatsoever arising from, or pertaining to the invasion of the National Assembly by some unknown thugs and hooligans on the 18th April, 2018 and the theft thereof of the Senate mace or recommending the imposition of any sanction or penalty on the applicant in connection with the said invasion”

  • ‘Why Buhari, APC settled for Lawan, Gbajabiamila’

The National Vice Chairman in charge of the North Central of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Ahmed Suleiman Wambi, has said that past experience, excellence and party loyalty were ingredients that attracted Senator Ahmed Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila to the President for the position of Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively.

Wambai told reporters in Abuja that President Muhammadu Buhari and other party leaders showed interests in the candidacies of the two because they are loyal party men with vast experience.

While admitting the choice may not have been based on religious equity, Wambi said the ruling party took the decision to support the two for Nigeria to move forward.

He said: “We have not given Ahmed Lawan the position of Senate President because he is from North-east or Gbajabiamila Speaker because he is from South-west but based on the performance of the party, their contribution and loyalty.

“There was a time Mr. President sent budget to the National Assembly and that proposal was kept there for about seven months.

“Gbabiamila and Lawan were the ones fighting and because of that they received a lot of frustration, traumatisation and intimidation from the present leadership of the National Assembly.

“So, do you think the party and Mr. President should not reward those people? No. We said that despite the fact that the North-west has the president, the South-west has the Vice President, the Senate President is zoned to the North-east, Mr. President felt we should reward Femi Gbajabiamila base on the compelling loyalty and his experience.”

He went on: “Mr. President prefers these people because of their past experiences. We are not saying that there is nobody in the North-central that is qualified, no.

‘’But the issue is that there are certain considerations. We fought for the zone to get Deputy Speaker in the House of Reps and also Senate Majority Leader in the Senate.”

On whether the ruling APC puts the religious balancing into the consideration because Lawan and Gbajabiamila are Muslims, he said: “You do not understand the political dynamism of our country.

‘’ Do you think if we concentrate on religion this country will move forward? We go for excellence sometime. We go for those people who can key into the project of change and deliver.

“What do you mean by sensitivity? Between APC and PDP which party is more sensitive? Do you think Muslim or Christianity can provide solutions to the problems of Nigeria? Until Nigerians become aware and key into excellence.

“We should no longer say discriminate against anybody who has something to offer. The moment a nation starts thinking about where someone comes from or the religion he or she practice such a nation is doomed.”

When reminded that some of his members from North-central are scheming to take the position of Speaker, Wambai said the South-West should be allowed to produce the next Speaker.

  • Fresh cracks in PDP over Lawan, Goje, Ndume

Differences among incoming federal legislators elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over who to support  for Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker in June are not about to abate any moment soon, an investigation has revealed.

The PDP, according to multiple sources, is mobilizing its members to vote against the official candidates of the APC for the two positions to put the opposition party in a position to influence decision in the legislature.

One of the options being considered by the PDP is to sponsor the pair of Alhaji Danjuma Goje as Senate President and Chief Ike Ekweremadu as his deputy.

Some other PDP leaders are suggesting either Sen. Ali Ndume-Ekweremadu mandate or Sen. Abdullahi Adamu-Ekweremadu ticket.

But several incoming PDP federal lawmakers are not convinced that their party’s plot will sail through.

Several meetings by  the  legislators-elect convened to resolve the issues have failed  as they could not agree on zoning the minority offices or allowing the current leadership of the party’s caucuses in the national assembly to continue when the 9th assembly commences.

It was gathered that while the PDP hierarchy favours the retention of the current leadership of the party caucuses in the national assembly, the majority of the legislators-elect are rooting for a new order.

Another meeting held in Abuja last week to address the issues ended without a concrete agreement on the matters discussed.

“We are yet to agree on the national assembly leadership questions,” a member at the last meeting said.

He added: “In fact, a new dimension was introduced into it at the Abuja meeting. A group of senators are now agitating that the minority leadership must be returned to the South-south geo-political zone from where it was taken away following the defection of Senator Godswill Akpabio to the APC.

“Members-elect from the Southwest are also  asking questions about what will be the place of the zone in the leadership arrangement.

“I can recall that the issue of how the zone was allegedly schemed out of the race for national chairmanship was revived as part of the many arguments now going on within our party.”

The PDP may also have jettisoned the idea of making Ekweremadu minority leader in the event that the bid to make return him as deputy senate president fails.

The party, sources said, was swayed on the matter by the strong opposition of the majority of the legislators elect to the idea.

“That was suggested but I don’t think it is on the table again. Majority of us are opposed to the idea,” our source said.

“We still need to agree on a lot of things.

“I can tell you for example that it is not true that all of us want to work with Senator Danjuma Goje as being reported.

“Many of us would rather have PDP support someone like Senator Ali Ndume. And this was raised when we met. Those supporting Goje are largely current Senators many of whom are not returning to the national assembly.

“It is our own opinion that we do not want to be seen as fighting the battles of some ex-Senators when we resume. We want to be seen as our own men.

“Goje is widely believed to be negotiating with the current leadership of the senate for a deal. That is not the opinion or position of many of us. Ndume represents something fresh and we will prefer that. But unfortunately, the public is being made to believe Goje is our choice.”

The Nation was also informed of the existence of another group of PDP legislators-elect who are opposed to the idea of a deal with any APC senator against Senator Ahmed Lawan.

This group, according to party sources, has been impressing it on the leadership of the party that none of the APC senators threatening to oppose Lawan can deliver the needed APC votes to make any alliance work against the ruling party in the 9th assembly.

A PDP national officer from the Southwest said the lawmakers are more opened to the offers being made towards the opposition legislators by Lawan and Femi Gabjabiamila.

“They think it is better to strike deals that will see the APC and PDP sharing committee positions in a manner that will enable them work together amicably than working on plots that will further factionalise the national assembly when they resume.”

“Many of them are openly condemning the hard line stance of the current leadership of the national assembly.”

“I have heard PDP legislators-elect advice against a national assembly leadership that will be opposed to everything about the executive arm of government. They want an end to the current hostility between the presidency and the national assembly. It may be difficult to get such persons to back the ongoing plot.”

The Nation however gathered that the leadership of the PDP is determined to ensure that legislators-elect on the platform of the party are united ahead of the inauguration of the 9th assembly. This, according to party sources, is necessary considering the desire of the opposition party to play a role in the emergence of the leadership of the next national assembly.

“We are talking to our lawmakers-elect. We are optimistic that we will go into the 9th assembly as a united bloc. It is a very important issue to us and we will do everything possible to achieve that unity. Don’t forget that the PDP as a virile opposition party is desirous of influencing the process that will produce the leadership of the 9th assembly,” one of our sources added.

  • ‘How Lawan can become Senate President’

Senator Margery, widow of former Senate President Chuba Okadigbo, spoke with reporters in Abuja on the plight of her late husband as number three citizen. She also spoke on the feeling of marginalisation by the Southeast and what President Muhammadu Buhari can do to succeed in his second term. Assistant Editor GBADE OGUNWALE was there.

If Dr. Chuba Okadigbo were to be around today, perhaps, he would have offered a word of advice to the three lawmakers vying for the position of Senate President in the Ninth Senate.

Okadigbo, whose tenure as President of the Forth Senate witnessed so much turbulence, got thrown under a moving bus by an adversary. Okadigbo became the President of the Senate against the wish and desire of the former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He stepped on the proverbial banana peel and the rest is history.

Okadigbo’s widow, Senator Margery who stood by her husband through the testy times, has been watching the contest for the President of the Ninth Senate from the sidelines. With the benefit of hindsight, she would rather urge the contestants to tread softly. The turf, she cautioned, is too slippery for anyone to believe they can skid to victory. Mrs. Okadigbo them advised them against anti-party activities just to meet an end. According to her, one may benefit personally from engaging in anti-party activities, but it will ultimately end up a Pyrrhic victory. Perhaps the leadership of the Present Senate can tell the story better.

Using Dr. Okadigbo as case study, she said both individuals and political parties, even a President, can be guilty of playing anti-party activities.

Her words: “The party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hounded him from day one. When we begin to talk about anti-party, it started with Chuba Okadigbo. Remember that the PDP as senators-elect, had all decided that they wanted Okadigbo as the Senate President.

“But, some people decided that Okadigbo as Senate President was not what they wanted, and on the floor of the Senate, there was anti-party. The PDP as a party hired the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and the APP All Peoples Party (APP) at the time and voted against their own candidate. That was why the then President Obasanjo went and solicited support from other parties, because PDP was in clear majority and the majority of PDP senators wanted Okadigbo.

The PDP at the time was a united party, but somebody started the anti-party. It did not start today. My husband was the first case. You can even add that when it came to inducements, we know when it started. So, some of these issues that we are talking about today, they have been in existence a long time ago”. Mrs. Okadigbo, however, is of the view that with their majority status, senators-elect of the All Progressives Congress (APC) can change the narrative.

She counsels: “If the senators-elect believe in the supremacy of the party they belong to, they should know that their first responsibility is to defend their party. And in defence of their party, they have to first understand that the APC is in the majority. I am not talking about any influences on the outside. I am talking about them as senators-elect. They should understand and I am sure they do know that they are in the majority. So, if they are in the majority, they should stay together as the party in majority and vote the person who will be their Senate President. They do not need to solicit the participation of any other party”.

In most cases,  personal interests and the quest to leverage on loyalty to a particular candidate in the long run, have always dictated how some senators-elect vote on the floor, with little regard for party discipline.

To Mrs. Okadigbo, without sanctions, the trend may continue to dominate politics in the legislature in a long time to come.

She said: “I just said that the first thing senators-elect should do is to respect the decision of the platform upon which they were elected. You know there have not been any sanctions for all these cross carpeting and what have you. Until we get sanctions, party discipline will never be in place. I just said that the APC, being the majority should understand that they are the majority, and they should work on the basis of party supremacy. And if out of the 109 senators, the APC, which has about 64, decides amongst themselves to elect a member, they will have the majority. They do not need to go looking for other parties to support them. They can still choose who they want by staying together”.

So far, three returnee senators, Ahmed Lawan (Yobe North), Ali Ndume (Borno South) and Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central) are in the race. However, the leadership of the APC has expressed a preference for Lawan, but Ndume and Goje have refused to back down. Even as the APC has maintained that its choice of Lawan is cast in hard granite, Okadigbo said the issue goes far beyond that.

Her recipe: “I am not even sure the party’s insistence on Lawan can work on its own. They are not dealing with children. I am saying that the APC senators-elect are in the majority. The 64 or so of them should have their shadow election. They should be mature about this thing. If they have three people that want to be Senate President, the 64 of them should have their shadow election and decide on whom it will be and whoever it is that they decide on, they should take it to the floor. At that point, they are the majority because they are coming with one voice”.

Mrs. Okadigo observes a disconnect between the Executive and the National Assembly, particularly the Senate in the present dispensation. She opined that the APC cannot afford a repeat of the acrimony that characterised the relationship between the two arms of government in the unfolding dispensation.

A few years after the death of her husband, Mrs Okadigbo represented Anambra North Senatorial District from 2011 to 2015 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The ex-lawmaker had joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) early 2018 and had re-contested the seat in the February 23, 2019 election. She lost the contest to the confusion and in-fighting among party chieftains in the district. She described the Anambra chapter of the APC as a house of confusion. For someone who played an active role in the PDP during the 2017 governorship election in Anambra State, her decision to join the APC came to many as a surprise.

Apparently in recognition of her contributions to the APC, the leadership of the party has appointed her into the APC committee for the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari coming up on May 29. What is her expectation after the inauguration, more so given the fact that her husband was Buhari’s running mate during the 2007 presidential election?

She replies: “I really do not think this is a fair question to ask. The reason is that President Buhari has been in power since 2015. In 2015, as I said, I was not around. I had issues that led to the loss of my son. So for me as a parent and as a single parent at that time, that was my priority.

Four years later, there is a new situation. The government is back in power. At this point, I ran an election on that platform. It is a family I know. In all these years, I have been in touch with them. I have had a relationship with them. Even when I lost my son, the First Lady sent quite a delegation to Ogbunike because this was happening at a time when she also had her son involved in an accident. So, there were two mothers in situations involving their children.

“However, government is unfolding and I am available. I am ready to serve in any capacity that I find myself. Right now, I am in the service of the inauguration committee, preparing for the inauguration. So, I do not know where it will head or where it will end up. But wherever it is, I am ready”.

Politically speaking, would the situation have been different if Dr Okadigbo were to be around?

She said: “When I went to the Senate, I always tell people that, if Dr Okadigbo woke up and you told him that I went to the Senate, he will tell you to leave him to continue his sleep because he would never have believed it. That is why I say that politically, I am a child of circumstance. I never had any godfather, and I did not wake up and say to myself that today I am going to be a politician. Although I have always been in a political home. My paternal uncle, the late Nwafor Orizu, was my grandmother’s younger brother. My grandmother is an Orizu. So, I have always been in a political family. Then I married into politics. When it comes to representing Anambra North, I am richly qualified. I was born in Anambra North and I married from Anambra North. I think everything depends on time and circumstance and when that time and circumstance are right, things will fall into place.”

Asked if Chuba Okadigbo would have joined the APC if he were to be alive today? “Yes, if my late husband was alive, he would have been in APC, that is what I can tell you from what I know of him. If I recall, he said that he may not be here, but Muhammadu Buhari will forge ahead. So, I have no doubt that Chuba would have been a member of APC. My husband was a politician; he learnt it, he taught it, he practiced it. There are no two ways about it. The man was a tactician. So, maybe, he would have been able to offer something. Even at a young age of thirty-something, when he was political adviser to Shehu Shagari, he had a lot to offer. So, I do not doubt for one moment that Chuba would have been APC”.

She felt no qualms joining the APC, despite complaints from her kinsmen in the South East, that the Igbo are being marginalisation by the Buhari administration. Does she see things differently?

She said: “I want to talk about a simple thing like the Zik Mausoleum. That Zik Mausoleum has been hanging for so many years. It took Buhari’s government to finish it. I was sitting as a Senator for Anambra North when we went for the ground breaking of the Second Niger Bridge in the year 2013 or 2014.

“But before Jonathan, there had been talks about Second Niger Bridge. But today, I can tell you that Second Niger Bridge is happening. Talking about roads, there are roads now being done. Remember, in the Senate on one of those occasions when we had the debate, I said that the Second Niger Bridge in particular was a campaign slogan for most politicians in the Southeast.

“The Southeast has not learnt that political arithmetic. We are yet to learn it. I stand exactly where Dr. Okadigbo stood in 2003, that one plus one does not necessarily give you two; that one plus one can give you zero. But that you can play one plus one and it will give you five. We are yet to understand that political arithmetic and we get it wrong all the time. Until we learn to do it, just like he said years ago, we will never get it right in the Southeast”.

  • Buhari to tell Goje, Ndume: Lawan is APC’s candidate

President Muhammadu Buhari may hold a “frank” meeting with two of the three aspirants for Senate President  – Sen. Danjuma Goje and Sen. Ali Ndume — on the adoption of Senate Leader Ahmad Lawan for the office.

The All Progressives Congress(APC) is working towards a lone candidate for the job.

Lawan yesterday intensified lobbying of senators-elect from the opposition, especially those from the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

The main issue between the APC team and the PDP  senators-elect has been the mode of voting during the inauguration of the Senate in June.

There are indications that a block vote by PDP senators may not be possible.

According to sources, the President decided to intervene in the race for Senate president to avoid APC going into the battle as a divided house.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The President will meet with Goje and Ndume to explain to them the rationale behind the adoption of Lawan as the party’s candidate for Senate president.

“Some of the aspirants have claimed that Buhari has not stated where he stands on the matter. In order not to take things for granted, the President has decided to hold a frank session with Goje and Ndume.

“ The meeting will hold at or before the weekend. But after the dialogue, the President and the party may then draw the battle line if the two aspirants do not want to respect the supremacy of APC.

“We hope reason will prevail and these aspirants will leave the party united.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “The Presidency and the APC are working towards the emergence of one candidate for the Office of the President of the Senate. This is the maximum Buhari and other leaders may tolerate.”

A member of Lawan’s campaign team said after the meeting with more senators-elect from the opposition, especially the PDP, the Senate Leader was trying to consolidate the gains made “by building confidence and trust”.

“There are some prejudices and fears  we have succeeded in addressing to allay misgivings by our colleagues,” he said, pleading not to be named because he is not permitted to talk on the issue.

The source spoke on the mode of voting during the inauguration of the National Assembly on June 6.

“Those in APC are adamant on open voting and some senators-elect in the opposition have stuck to secret ballot system. We are confident that we shall all be on the same page before the inauguration,” he said.

PDP senators-elect are not likely to vote same way.

One said: “I think because of certain interests peculiar to some of us, block voting might be difficult for PDP. We do not have the number to dominate the Senate and if Lawan wins, those opposed to him might not get befiting committees.

“So, in casting votes for any candidate, you have to align the interest of the party with the overriding interest of your constituents who are demanding the dividends of democracy. Some of us are not going to the Senate to be bench warmers.”

Also yesterday,  a Joint Consultative Forum of Northern Youth Groups dismissed  the insinuations that Lawan  would be remote-controlled by unseen hands if elected as Senate president.

It described the allegation as  ”false and cheap blackmail”.

The forum hailed the senator as “a man of integrity, whose consistency in vying for Senate president is in line with his belief in the independence of legislature”.

In a communiqué jointly signed by the forum’s Director of Media and Publication and Chairperson of the  communiqué Committee, Isah Imam Muhammed and Zainab Aliyu Sabon-Birni, the forum said among all the contending senators, only Lawan possesses  leadership trait which can help Nigeria.

The forum said: “It is pertinent to state that Senator Lawan cannot be anybody’s stooge as a Senate President.”

“We appeal  to other aspirants to see reason and rally round Lawan who has the capacity to lead the 9th Senate for the benefit of Nigeria and Nigerians.

“ Lawan enjoys a lot of respect from the Executive arm of government, which is a good signal of a harmonious working relationship between the two arms of government in the next dispensation. ”As youths of Nigeria who are critical stakeholders in the Nigerian project, our support for Senator Lawan is predicated on our belief that he will serve as a bridge that will unite the Senate, irrespective of party leaning.

”We believe he will deploy his experience and goodwill to bring about harmonious working relationship within and among all arms of government in the next dispensation in the interest of national unity, peace and development.”

  • Arewa youths reject puppet, stooge as Senate President, Speakers

Youths of Northern Nigeria under the auspices of Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) have declared they won’t accept stooge or puppet as Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker.

They stated Nigerians desire patriotic, selfless and experienced leaders in the 9th Senate and House of Representatives.

In a terse statement in Kaduna, the Arewa Youths Forum stated such leaders must be driven by the burning desire to fast track legislation, which shall be of benefit to the ordinary Nigerian.

The statement signed by the AYF’s Director, Public Affairs, Abdulhamid Bello however said for such leaders to emerge, members of the 9th Assembly must be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights and legislative independence.

The youths said: “For record, each and every Distinguished Senator and Honourable Member of House of Representatives-Elect have rights to aspire and stand for Election into various offices, and as well have votes to cast, subject to the laws guiding this exercise in the National Assembly.

“It is disturbing and disheartening that Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members-Elect instead of being allowed the freedom to use their conscience, sound judgment, and conviction based on Agendas of Candidates aspiring for leadership positions in the National Assembly, efforts are being made to remotely control, tele guide, arm twist and force them to vote for candidates whose leadership of the National Assembly may be counter-productive to the accelerated and sustainable delivery of democracy dividends and socio-economic development of Nigeria.

“The Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) is of the view that the recently elected members of the 9th Assembly and forthcoming ones must be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights and Legislative independence.

“Therefore, after careful study, wide consultation, deep assessment and review based on our current realities as a nation, it is crystal clear to all discerning and patriotic Nigerians that we do not need a ‘stooge’ or ‘puppet’ of a Godfather as a Senate President or Speaker, House of Representatives.

“What we actually need is a Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives that are patriotic, selfless and experienced; leaders that are driven by the burning desire to fast track legislation, which shall be of benefit to the ordinary Nigerian.”

  • Jostle for Senate President assumes a new dimension

The race for the Senate Presidency is getting exciting by the day. Yesterday two former Senate Presidents, ex-Speaker, ex-PDP governors backed the ambition of Senator Ahmed Lawan, who promised an independent legislature; Borno elders denied endorsing any candidate, and some All Progressives Congress (APC) youths urged the party to take all zones seriously. Yusuf Alli, Gbade Ogunwale and Onyedi Ojiabor report.

    Two ex-Senate Presidents,

    ex-Speaker, ex-PDP

    governors back Lawan

The jostle for the Office of the Senate President assumed a new dimension yesterday following the backing of the Senate Leader, Dr Ahmad Lawan by two former Presidents of the Senate and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Some former governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have also joined the push for Lawan.

But Lawan and members of his campaign team yesterday met with more Senators-elect to explain their agenda of a United National Assembly.

According to an investigation by our correspondent, the two ex-Senate Presidents, ex-Speaker and former PDP governors (names withheld) were said to be backing Lawan based on principles and the “need for a more robust legislature.”

A few of the ex-governors hinged their support on “personal relationship they have had with Lawan irrespective of the position of their party.”

The affected former chairmen of the National Assembly have “rated Lawan as a lawmaker with enormous legislative experience.”

It was learnt that some of the foot soldiers of the ex-Senate Presidents had been meeting with Senators-elect to woo them for Lawan.

A top source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, said: “The mandate given to Lawan and other APC lawmakers to reach out to top leaders and members of the opposition has started yielding results.

“At least two former Senate Presidents, a former Speaker,  about three ex-PDP governors and some former ministers during the 16-year administration of PDP have joined forces with Lawan. They believe that Lawan’s choice will be better for the upper chamber.

“These leaders have directed their supporters and loyalists to serve as lobbyists for Lawan because of the “need for a more robust legislature. They believe the Senate is derailing and losing its maturity.

“At the appropriate time, all these leaders will publicly unveil their support for Lawan.”

But Lawan yesterday had an audience with more Senators-elect from PDP in Abuja on how to have a united Senate and National Assembly.

He pleaded with the Senators-elect to “rise above partisanship and give him a chance to lead the National Assembly.

One of the PDP Senators-elect said: “Lawan actually assured us of fairness, equity and justice. We are happy that he is promising that there will be no discrimination.

“So far, we are all weighing options because Sen. Ali Ndume has met with some of us too. Although our party is yet to come up with a position on the 9th Senate Presidency, this one-on-one initiative of Lawan has given us the opportunity to know who he is. When we get to the bridge, we will cross it.”

  • ‘APC governors, others endorse Lawan, Gbajabiamila’

BORNO State Governor Kashim Shettima has confirmed that former governors in the yet-to-be inaugurated Ninth National Assembly have endorsed Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan and House of Representatives Leader for Senate President and House Speaker respectively.

Shettima made the confirmation while fielding questions from reporters in N’Djamena, Chad, at the weekend.

Besides, the governor informed that the three senators-elect and House of Representatives members-elect from Borno State have endorsed Lawan and Gbajabiamila for the exalted offices.

He, therefore, dismissed the insinuation in some quarters that former governors in the National Assembly were against the election of Lawan and Gbajabiamila as leaders of the two chambers of the national assembly.

According to Shettima, supporting President Muhammadu Buhari’s programmes and political decisions remained the only for the APC governors to show appreciation to the President.

He said: “All our governors, including those coming to the senate are 100 per cent in support of our party’s stance as far as election of new leadership for the national assembly is concerned.

“As far as Borno is concern, we are in alignment with the aspirations of Mr. President and that of our party. “Whoever the party endorses for any position, we will solely stand behind such a person because party discipline is absolutely essential for the sustainability of our democratic experiment.

“If everyone is to vote according to his own free will surely that would be a recipe for disaster or confusion. So, we have to align ourselves with the aspirations of the president.”

The governor, who was part of Buhari’s entourage to meeting of member nations of the the Community of Sahel – Saharan States (CEN SAD) in N’Djamena, expressed the hope that the body would come out with lasting solutions to the challenges of insecurity in the affected areas.

Commending Buhari for his role in promoting peace and stability in the region, the governor enjoined member nations of the CEN SAD to intensify efforts in addressing the problems of terrorism and banditry along the Lake Chad basin and beyond.
