My aide was robbed, killed by ‘soldiers’, Senator Adeola finally reveals

The chairman of the Senate committee on appropriations, Solomon Adeola, on Monday, said soldiers operating checkpoints around the Ikeja axis of Lagos state allegedly robbed and killed his aide, Adeniyi Oluwatosin Sanni, on Saturday, August 5, 2023.

Senator Adeola made this revelation in a statement he personally signed and made available to reporters in Abuja through his media aide, Kayode Odunaro.

Shortly after the incident, Adeola said he had information that Sanni was stopped at a checkpoint around the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos on his way to his home at Isheri by “security agents.”

He added that the deceased was asked to provide the documents of the car he was driving, which he did through a call to his wife who sent all the documents to his phone through a WhatsApp message.

The senator noted that when the wife called a while later, the late husband told him soldiers were still checking the vehicle’s particulars.

It was gathered that that was said to have been their last conversation before she was informed of the discovery of Sanni’s corpse, riddled with bullets, at the Toyota Bus Stop area of Oshodi, close to a military barrack.

Adeola said: “I am of the firm belief, based on available facts at the disposal of the Police that my aide was killed by a syndicate of soldiers operating under the newly deployed Commander of 9 Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment of the Nigeria Army, Brigadier General Nsikan John Edet, through mounting of checkpoints and robbing of lone occupants of cars.

“Top police sources familiar with the investigation informed me that a similar brutal killing and armed robbery occurred around the same Ojodu- Berger late Thursday night of August 17, 2023, resulting in the killing of another Nigerian whose body was discovered around Iyana-Ipaja after he was taken away by soldiers from the checkpoint.

“Unknown to the soldiers, the occupant of the car they killed and took away his car was the second car in a convoy of two heading towards the same destination. The first car passed the soldiers checkpoint but the second car was stopped to check his vehicle’s papers.

“On noticing the absence of the second car after a while, the occupant of the first car (name withheld) placed a call to his colleague in the second car who informed him that he was being taken to Iyana-Ipaja by the soldiers at the checkpoint.

Senator Adeola further stated: “That was the last he heard from him and his dead body was later discovered dumped on the road just like Mr. Sanni.

“The survivor in the first car reported the case to the Police and a pattern of armed robbery and killing in the area involving men in Army uniform was established.”

Adeola, therefore, called on the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, to direct the fishing out of the killers of his aide for further investigation, prosecution, and justice for the deceased.

He said such a pattern of killings and armed robbery had been established against soldiers mounting late-night checkpoints around Ikeja with similar unreported incidents in recent times around Ikeja.

He added that the Nigerian Army cannot be seen to condone or harbour rogue elements robbing and killing innocent Nigerians within its fold.

According to him, “Till date, the black Toyota Camry of Mr. Sanni, his phones, and other valuables are yet to be recovered.”

  • No regrets having Tinubu as godfather, says Sen. Adeola

Senator Solomon Adeola (APC-Lagos) says he does not have regrets having the national leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Ahmed Tinubu as his godfather.

Adeola, who made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja said there was nothing wrong in having a godfather in politics.

He was reacting to the belief by some Nigerians that his actions and inactions, particularly on the floor of the senate were geared towards pleasing Tinubu rather than his constituents.

The lawmaker said while the interest of his constituents remained paramount to him, he had high regards for Tinubu, who had nurtured him through his political career.

Adeola, who is Chairman Senate Committee on Local Content recently won the APC primary election for Lagos West Senatorial District.

He expressed optimism that with Tinubu and the people’s support, he would return to the senate in 2019.

“I want to thank my father, mentor and role model, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu who endorsed me as the party flag bearer.

“If not for God and Tinubu, I would not have been here today.

“I also want to thank all the party members for seeing me fit to go for another election.

“I am here on a mission, to protect and defend our democracy.

“I believe in the power of the people and they are the ones to decide those that will represent them,” he said.

Adeola said the electorate had seen his performance over the years and were prepared to give him their mandate to represent them in the 9th National Assembly.

He said, “I have had the opportunity of serving as a House of Representatives member and now I am in the Senate.

” In the last three years, I have sponsored 15 bills and two have been assented to by the President.

“I have also sponsored several motions on matters of national importance.

“I have also tried as much as I can to give my people a voice and I know they are pleased with my performance.”

The lawmaker added that he had carried out constituency projects that impacted greatly on the lives of his constituents.

“The things I have done in my constituency are evident. As we speak, we are planning a constituency outreach by first week of December.

“All we are doing is to ensure that we remain in constant touch with the people.

“It is a yearly thing and we will ensure that this year’s outreach impacts as much as the ones in the past if not better.

  • Senator Adeola disowns protesters at Tinubu’s residence

Senator Solomon Adeola (APC, Lagos West) has disowned protesters  at the Lagos residence of All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The protesters, who also took their case to the residence of a former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, demanded that the two party leaders should “release”  Senator Adeola (aka Yayi), to contest the 2019 Ogun State APC governorship ticket.

But, Adeola said yesterday in a statement by his media adviser Kayode Odunaro, that he never authorised nor was consulted by the protesters.

He said: “I concluded my consultations in Ogun State over a month ago with a commitment to continue to serve my constituents and the political party in Lagos West.

“The protest to the residence of our National Leader, Asiwaju Tinubu, is embarrassing and presumptuous. It was organised in bad faith. I was not consulted before the protest as the protesters stated themselves.

“It was not with my support or endorsement. And as the late MKO Abiola stated in such a situation, you cannot “shave someone’s head in his absence.”

Senator Adeola said his effort for re-election as senator representing Lagos West has received wide acceptance by leaders and supporters of the APC at various levels, adding that more than ever before, his commitment to continue to serve the good people of Lagos West without any distraction has been rekindled.

The Senator appealed to all his admirers to respect his wish to continue to serve the good people of Lagos West Senatorial District.”

  • Yewa are no minority in Ogun, says Senator Adeola

Yewa are no minority in Ogun, says Senator Adeola

The Yewa of Ogun West  are not a minority ethnic group, Senate Committee on Local Content Chairman Solomon Adeola (aka Yayi) has said.

The senator said it was unfortunate that internal and international boundaries had separated the people into different countries, states and local government areas.

Delivering a paper: Sustainable Development of Yewaland: The Role of Accountability in Governance, at the weekend in London, Adeola said international and national conspiracies had reduced Yewa land, with many indigenes living beyond their Ogun  home.

“Internationally, a large number of Yewa people reside on the other side of Benin Republic, where Ipokia, Yewa South, Yewa North and Imeko-Afon LGAs share boundary and nationally, where Yewa people share boundaries at Imeko-Afon with Oyo State in the North, Abeokuta North and Yewa North in the East. Also, Yewa are split by boundaries at Yewa North boundary with Abeokuta North, Yewa South boundary with Ewekoro, Ifo and Ado Odo Ota local government areas. It is also common knowledge that there is a large population of Yewa people in four wards in Oke- Ogun area of Abeokuta North and Ibara /Oke Ilewo area of Abeokuta South,” he said.

‘’Given this scenario and based on the 2006 Census figures, the different population figures among the ethnic groups of Ogun State based on senatorial districts at the detriment of Yewa people are by far compensated for by all the Yewa not in the current four LGAs of Ogun West, as Yewaland was “originally far bigger than what now obtains in Ogun West Senatorial District of Ogun State”.

Adeola noted that the non- accountability in governance is responsible for the marginalisation and low development of Yewa.

He remarked that development has favoured Ogun East and West, as governors from these districts attract projects to these areas.

Lamenting that Yewa, and indeed Ogun West, have not produced a governor in the state’s 42-year history, the senator, who is aspiring to contest in 2019, said if Yewa got the governorship, it shall be embrace the even development of the state.

President of Yewa Descendants Union (YDU) in the United Kingdom and Ireland, organisers of the conference, said the theme: ‘’Yewaland of Our Dream: Harnessing Thoughts, Expectations and Contributions from Diaspora,” was a wake-up call to those in the diaspora to support government and proffer solutions to issues of governance.

Other resource persons and dignitaries at the event include Suraju Adekunbi, Speaker of Ogun House of Assembly; Professor Rahman Bello; vice chancellor of University of Lagos; Professor Tope Poopola, of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
