Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has advocated economic cooperation between states in Africa.

Governor Diri said such cooperation would promote African unity, boost the economies of the sub-nationals as well as reduce the economic dependence on the Western world.

The Bayelsa governor stated this at the weekend during a meeting with the Governor of the Province of Namibe in Angola, Mr. Archer Mangueira.

He said Bayelsa and Namibe shared similarities as coastal states bordering the Atlantic Ocean and that both states could benefit from areas that they had comparative advantage.

Namibe has developed its marine economy to become the fishery hub of Angola and the southern African sub-region, with discussions between both leaders centred around exploring the opportunities of collaboration in this sector.

Diri said: “We have discovered that relationship between governments has not been very cordial across the continent of Africa. We rather prefer to value our relationship with Europe and Asia.

“Among presidents and governors, we have not related so well and I think that this kind of visit will address such relationship within us in Africa, particularly between states and countries.

“Bayelsa has a whole lot of similarities with Namibe. Like your province, Bayelsa borders the Atlantic Ocean except that Namibe has low lands with a dual advantage of the Atlantic Ocean and the desert.

“Bayelsa is at the heart of the Niger Delta, which is the oil-producing region of Nigeria, and like Namibe, it is also in the southern flank of our country. The state is very rich in oil and gas, and, in fact, it is richer in gas than oil.

“Like Namibe, we are also interested in fisheries because of our aquatic location and having the longest coastline in Nigeria, which has remained largely untapped and undeveloped. So, as we speak, our government is constructing roads to hit the Atlantic Ocean on three fronts in order for us to actually explore the ocean as you have done in Namibe. From what we have seen, we can collaborate in fisheries, which is one area you can explore beyond Bayelsa.

“I have also seen that there is a developed and functiona seaport here. We are trying to develop a deep seaport at a place called Agge, and we are looking out for investors that have the potential and resources to actualise this. So we are interested in collaborating with you on that.

“Also in agriculture, our land is very fertile for the cultivation of rice, plantain, cassava, bananas, potatoes and vegetables. We recently established a relationship with the South Korean Government, which has donated equipment to our state for mechanised farming.

“I believe that there many areas we can collaborate. Where you have comparative advantage, you produce, and where we have comparative advantage, we also produce.

“From our meeting, I’m aware that Namibe is also a potentially oil producing state. So, areas of collaboration include fisheries, agriculture, culture, tourism and potentially oil and gas.

“This meeting should be an eye opener for African countries and states. There is need to have this kind of bilateral relationship between states in Africa.”

Governor Diri thanked his host, Archer Mangueira, and his Vice-Governors, Ema Samali Henriques da Silva and Abel do Rosário Kapitango, for the warm reception accorded him and his delegation, saying it epitomised the true spirit of African brotherhood.

In his remarks, Governor of the Namibe Province, Archer Mangueira, said he was excited about the visit and the prospects for collaboration and investments.

Describing Namibe as the Land of Happiness, Mangueira noted that there was a lot to learn and benefit from a huge country like Nigeria.

He said although the province grapples with erosion challenges, it was focusing on its tourism sector for economic development of the region.

“We also have a very rich ecological biodiversity and a desert that is considered the oldest in the world. We have had potential in the fishery industry since the colonial era. Unfortunately, we do not have the level of funding that we had previously. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most important sectors for our socio-economic development.

“The oil industry also holds a lot of potential and we look forward to your expertise and support. We equally have the mining sector apart from oil. At the moment, we are exploring the mining sector for marble and granite production.

“This year, we are looking at complete the modernisation of our seaport to make it possible for export of our minerals.

“We look forward to the expertise of Nigeria and learn how it developed its mining sector. We are privileged to be in an area that is abundant in many minerals. So, there is a lot of potential to invest.

“We would like to learn from Nigeria’s experience regarding the use of pesticides and the treatment of agricultural products. We are open to partnerships with Nigeria to develop our agricultural sector in Angola, cultivating crops like watermelons, bananas, and mangoes.

“We believe that cooperation between our countries is key to advancing towards development. Mutual cooperation can be an effective way to overcome underdevelopment.

“It is important to emphasise that, in forming partnerships, we should also seek investments in the financial sector. There are already movements in this direction in Angola, with the presence of banks and ongoing negotiations. South-South cooperation should be prioritised as should agricultural development initiatives.

“I firmly believe that the future of African development is intrinsically linked to the strengthening of the agricultural sector in our countries. Thus, I accept the governor’s invitation for us to work together to build an agenda that is not limited to meetings but results in concrete actions that benefit our regions and strengthen our relations.”

Governor Diri was accompanied by a member of the House of Assembly, Hon. Ebizi Brown, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, and the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr. Iroro Komonibo.

Bayelsa @28: Diri urges Bayelsans to sustain peace, support state’s development

Bayelsa state governor, Senator Douye Diri, has called on the people of the state to continue supporting his administration to maintain the peace and stability that have fostered the state’s steady development.

Speaking through his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, at an inter-denominational thanksgiving service held in commemoration of Nigeria’s Independence Day and Bayelsa State’s 28th anniversary at the King of Glory Chapel, Government House, Yenagoa, Diri credited the state’s peace and security to the joint efforts of security agencies and the unwavering backing of Bayelsans.

He further noted Bayelsa’s significant progress over the past 28 years in terms of development, highlighting the contributions of successive administrations.

Diri said that Yenagoa used to be known as a one-road capital city. Still, today the state can boast at least three entry points into Yenagoa due to the commitment of the government to embark on massive infrastructural development across the state.

He stated: “You can now see the roads we are constructing, including the ongoing three senatorial roads as well the by-pass are among several road projects being handled to open up the state.

“And so we are only stating the obvious when we say we have done very well. Our state is not where it used to be. I urge our people to see the brighter side of life rather than the dark side.”

On the issue of the planned October 1st nationwide protest, Diri said the best option to resolving issues remains dialogue, and therefore, enjoined those planning the protest to shelve the idea, especially in the state.

He noted that his administration was doing everything humanly possible to ensure that there was peace and development as evident in the various projects and programmes being put in place for the welfare of Bayelsans.

The Governor said: “Through protest, we are likely to destroy the peace we have worked hard to achieve. So, l encourage them to sheathe their sword. Let us dialogue because a house that is divided against itself can never stand.

“It has to be dark before it becomes day breaks. And so, we hope and pray that we will pass through this dark period. So l want to encourage them to avoid the protest especially here in Bayelsa State. We are doing all that is possible to ensure that there is peace and prosperity for everyone.

“As Bayelsa celebrates its 28th anniversary, l offer the message of hope, courage, and determination because we are closer to where we need to get to than where we started.

“The government of Senator Douye Diri is doing everything humanly possible to develop the state and the signs are there for all to see, so they should be hopeful.”

In his sermon, titled, A Shepherd in The Imitation of Christ”, the Chaplain, Central Naval Command Headquarters, Bayelsa State, Rev. Father Ethelbert Owulu, they have urged leaders to see themselves as an instrument of God to render selfless service to mankind.

Rev. Father Owulu, who is also a commander in the Nigerian Navy, said just as God chose various prophets to deliver his people from hardship, those in positions of authority should see themselves as shepherds to improve the general well-being of the people.

The Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo read the only lesson at the service taken from Joel’s book Chapter Two, verses 23 to 26.

Intercessory prayers were offered for President Bola Tinubu and his Vice, Kashim Shettima, Governor Douye Diri and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and their families as well as for the security, peace, and stability of Nigeria and Bayelsa State.

Special prayers were also offered for the three arms of government and the people of Nigeria, particularly the Niger Delta region and Ijaw land.

Dignitaries who attended the service included the wife of the Governor, Dr Gloria Diri, the informer military governor of Rivers State, King Alfred Diete-Spiff, the immediate past deputy governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd), Chief Judge, Justice Matilda Ayemieye, President, Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Daniel Ayah, state lawmakers,

Others are the Secretary to State Government, Prof Nimbofa Ayaowei, the state Head of Service, Dame Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema, Commissioners and other top government functionaries, service commanders, and royal fathers including the Chairman of the state traditional rulers council, King Bubaraye Dakolo.

  • Crisis rocks Bayelsa PDP over choice of running mate

The choice of running mate to the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has thrown the party into crisis ahead of the November 16 election.

The crisis assumed another dimension, following the insistence of Governor Seriake Dickson, to zone the slot to the West Senatorial District to pave the way for the incumbent senator representing the zone, Senator Lawrence Erwujakpor to emerge as the running mate.

Despite earlier denials, Dickson was said to have perfected the process of making Erwujakpor, who hails from his Sagbama Local Government Area, a running mate to enable him realise his senatorial ambition, if PDP wins the poll.

While many party leaders have warned the governor against the plot describing it as political suicide, stakeholders from former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Eastern Senatorial District said they deserved the position for a sense of belonging in the party.

The Bayelsa East Forum for Justice (BEFJ) said having picked the candidate from the Bayelsa Central, it was natural to select a competent party man with requisite political clout and popularity from the East.

Speaking in Yenagoa, its Chairman, Monday Eribo, described the zoning of the slot to the West as an attempt to deprive the people of the East.

Eribo said the plot was motivated by greed and warned that, was capable of handing over the state on a platter of gold to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said: “So, we are therefore, condemning and rejecting it and calling on our beloved Governor Seriake Dickson not to fall for such grievous political mistake. We are also calling on party leaders at the national and state levels to wade into the matter and on time.

“We urge our flag bearer, Senator Douye Diri, to name his successor from the East. We understand he is under pressure at the moment but he should do the right thing if we must win the election and the right thing is what he knows.

“Let us state categorically that the man they are planning to use as running mate, Senator Lawrence Ewrujakpor is a bad market at this point in time because he hails from Sagbama Local Government Area. If Ewrujakpor is a true party man we urge him to come out now and disassociate himself from the plan to foist him on us.

“Let us remind our countryman governor that he must win the governorship election for our party first before talking about his senatorial ambition. Also, those clamouring for speakership from our zone should not forget that if we lose the election, their ambition of becoming speaker will hit the rock”.

Also, Concerned Bayelsa PDP Stakeholders (CBPS) condemned the decision to zone the running mate to the west.

They described the decision as an outrageous mistake that would  work against the PDP in the November 16 election.

In a statement by Chief Ere Opukiri and Omonibo, the stakeholders rejected the governor’s action, saying it betrayed his earlier stance that he would not take the running mate to the West in the interest of justice and fairness.

They urged the governor not to zone the position to the West, especially Sagbama where he hails from.

They warned that there would be mass exodus of members, especially from the East, which would reduce the chances of the PDP to retain the governorship.

They said: “We are shocked that Governor Dickson who was opposed to the ambition of Fred Agbedi to take over from him because of zoning will now make a u-turn to favour his kinsman from Sagbama.

“The position of running mate we feel should go to Bayelsa East. This will balance the political equation and give the people of that zone a sense of belonging. It will be inappropriate to do otherwise.

“Governor Dickson had earlier denied that he will support someone from the West to emerge as running mate. We wonder what has changed. Those who are behind it should know that it is a suicidal political move”.

Another group, Youths for Douye Diri urged Dickson not to facilitate the emergence Ehrudjakpor as running mate to their principal.

The Secretary-General of the group, Comrade Beinbebo Akpiri, said the choice of Ehrudjakpor was a sad political development for the PDP.

Akpiri, in a statement in Yenagoa, warned against the imposition of Ehrudjakpor on the party, stressing that it would not fly because of the current political realities.

He said Dickson should bury his ambition to go to the Senate and concentrate on winning the governorship election with a more acceptable running mate.

Akpiri said the slot should be given to a loyal, popular and acceptable party man from Bayelsa East to strengthen the PDP’s chances at the poll.

The youth leader expressed displeasure that leaders of the PDP were keeping mute over the issue, although they were  not comfortable with the governor’s decision.

The group called on the Prince Uche Secondus-led National Working Committee to prevail on Dickson to have a rethink.

But, the leadership òf the state chapter of the PDP said that it would stand by any faithful and loyal member of the party that might be nominated by its candidate, Senator Douye Diri as running mate.

The Chairman and Secretary of the party, Moses Cleopas and Chief Godspower Keku, said in a statement that since the party’s candidate came from the Central Senatorial District, Diri was at liberty to select any suitable person from either the East or the West.

They said that the party would be left with no option than to zone the speakership of the House òf Assembly and other offices in the party and government to the remaining zones for equity and fairness in accordance with the established tradition in the state since 1999.

The PDP State leadership stated that the party was not too concerned about a running mate which according to them was like a senior adviser to the governor, not different from marrying a wife which must be done by the candidate himself.

They stressed that the party had no reason to lose sleep over the issue of running mate.
