Senator, council chairman bicker over project

The Chairman of Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State, Lukman Agbelere, has halted a multi-million naira hospital renovation project facilitated by the senator representing Kwara Central, Saliu Mustapha.

The project, a federal government intervention reportedly valued at N200 million, was targeted at upgrading a primary healthcare centre in Awodi, a community in Gambari Ward II of Ilorin East Local Government.

In a video online on Monday, Mr Agbelere confirmed his decision to stop the project, citing political loyalty to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Speaking in Yoruba, he described Senator Mustapha as an “enemy” of his political principal. “Ota oga mi, ota mi” — translated as “an enemy of my boss is my enemy,” he said.

The primary healthcare centre was listed among constituency projects facilitated by Senator Mustapha, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, aimed at improving access to quality healthcare at the grassroots.

However, Mr Agbelere, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), claimed that the council had the capacity to execute the renovation independently, adding that the decision to take over the project was in line with the state government’s directive on grassroots development.

“I won’t allow it. We’ll do it ourselves, there is no project the Senator facilitates that the council cannot achieve in better fold” the chairman declared, as he addressed a gathering in the now-viral video. He also responded to criticisms he said were aired during a local radio programme, where he was accused of obstructing development due to political rivalry.

Mr Agbelere’s comments have sparked reactions across the state, amid growing concerns over internal divisions within the ruling APC. Political analysts have linked the development to a deepening rift between Mustapha and the governor, particularly as succession politics ahead of the 2027 governorship election begin to shape alliances and loyalties within the party.

Several residents and civil society groups have condemned the chairman’s actions, accusing him of placing political interests above public welfare.

The convener of Good Governance Group, Alhaji Shola Muse said the council chairman’s actions is a sabotage of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the health and agriculture sectors.

“This is not the first time the Senator’s projects have been cancelled. So far, the totality of the projects run into billions of Naira. What they failed to realise is that these are not personal projects of the Senator but federal government projects for the development of the grassroots. So, the party, the Federal Government and ultimately the people are the ones on the receiving end.”

Observers note that the clash is the latest in a series of quiet tensions within the Kwara APC, raising questions about how intra-party politics may affect federal interventions in the state.

  • Senator urges FG to make Agric studies compulsory in school

Senator urges FG to make Agric studies compulsory in school

The chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Saliu Mustapha has called for the introduction of compulsory hands-on agricultural studies at the secondary school level.

Mustapha made the call at a public lecture organized by the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, University of Ilorin on Thursday.

According to a statement from his media office, Senator Mustapha, who was represented by Prof. Binta Sulyman of the Kwara State University, Malete, emphasized the need to move agriculture beyond mere rhetoric and policy pronouncements, arguing that practical agricultural education from an early age would prepare future generations to see farming as a viable profession and not just a subsistence activity.

“We need to get serious about agriculture if we are to feed our growing population and reduce our over-reliance on imports,” he said. “Making agriculture a compulsory and practical subject in secondary schools is a critical step in that direction.”

Mustapha lamented the declining interest in agriculture among young Nigerians, attributing it to an outdated perception of farming as labour-intensive and unrewarding.

He argued that if students were exposed to the modern, technology-driven aspects of agriculture—such as mechanized farming, agribusiness, and sustainable practices—it could spark renewed interest in the sector.

“Countries like Israel and India have demonstrated how a strong emphasis on agricultural education can turn around their food production capabilities. Nigeria must follow suit by ensuring that every child learns not only the theory of farming but the practical aspects as well,” he said.

The Senator also stressed that compulsory agricultural studies would help Nigeria address rising unemployment rates, as it would equip young people with skills to venture into farming, agribusiness, and related industries. He added that an agrarian-focused educational curriculum could produce a generation of problem-solvers who can contribute meaningfully to reducing the nation’s food import bill.

“Beyond feeding ourselves, we must see agriculture as a business. Agriculture should not just be about producing food for the table, but it should be viewed as a business model that can generate wealth for millions of Nigerians,” he added.

The Senator further called on stakeholders in education, agriculture, and policymaking to collaborate closely in ensuring the implementation of these ideas. He lauded the Federal Ministry of Education for its curriculum revision efforts, describing it as a step in the right direction but cautioned that policy must translate into real-world action.

“There has been enough talk. What we need now are concrete actions, and that includes making sure that schools are equipped with the necessary facilities—farms, greenhouses, and modern farming tools—to make this hands-on agriculture education a reality,” he said.

The call comes at a time when Nigeria faces multiple challenges in the agricultural sector, including aging farmers, poor access to modern farming technologies, and underutilized arable land. Experts argue that without significant policy shifts, the country’s goal of achieving food security will remain elusive.

    Outrage over senator’s 2023 polls’ vote-buying confession

Condemnation has trailed Deputy Minority Senate Leader, Olalere Oyewumi’s confession that he used his personal money for vote buying purposes during the 2023 General Election.

Oyewumi made the confession  in a viral video sighted by The Nation yesterday.

The lawmaker in the video explained how he sent his aide on errand on the eve of the election with his personal money for vote buying but was rejected by strong supporters of the All Progressives Congress(APC).

The Minority Leader, who is representing Osun West District, while receiving defectors into PDP, said “I tried all the tricks I knew to win at Onilu House (Ile Onilu) polling unit but these people didn’t allow me.

“After exhausting money for the election, I gave my personal money to Ten-Ten to give to people at night to buy votes on the eve of the election, Ten-Ten came back with my money, saying the people rejected it. I was surprised.

“That was why I reached out to these people  because I cannot be a Senator and continue to fail there. I was the one who called Ayandosu from Abuja to join me in the PDP. I told him he has talent and that the party he was serving then (APC) would not allow him to grow.”

The leadership of APC through its chairman, Tajudeen Lawal in a statement noted that the confession of the PDP Senator has vindicated them that Osun State guber election was not free and fair, urging security operatives to commence his prosecution.

He said, “The confessional statement of Senator Oyewumi was a confirmation of the fact that the last series of the elections in the state which secured victory for all the PDP candidates including Governor Ademola Adeleke, were brazenly rigged.

“The self-confession of Senator Oyewumi was an indication that he is a desperate politician who could go to any length to illegally corner opportunities regardless of what such portends to the right-thinking members of the society.

“In a civilized clime, Senator Oyewumi has no iota of reason to remain a minute longer in the Senate where he has been the Minority Leader based on his self-confession that he engaged in vote-buying during the election that secured a fraudulent victory for him.”

“By now, Senator Oyewumi should be a guest of the statutory law enforcement agency constitutionally saddled with the responsibility of investigating such political crime involving a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

  • Senator Sumaila mourns victims of Wudil accident

Senator Sumaila mourns victims of Wudil accident

Senator Sulaiman Kawu Sumaila has sympathized with the families of the 11 persons who lost their lives in an auto crash along the Kano-Maiduguri Highway on Friday, April 19.

Sumaila in a statement in Abuja expressed grief over the demise of the 11 people, regretting that Kano-Maiduguri road has remained a death trap to many road users.

The over 550-kilometre dualization project was awarded by the federal government at the end of the second tenure of former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Senator Sumaila explained that the importance of the road to Nigeria’s economy cannot be over-emphasized as the international highway links Nigeria with Chad Republic, Cameroon, Niger Republic, and the Central Africa Republic, thereby boosting businesses among the affected countries.

He also said that the road which also connects Kano with Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, and Borno states, is playing a great role in the economic activities of the states.

Sumaila, however, lamented that despite its importance, the road has claimed several lives due to the non-completion of the project.

He said for almost 17 years since the award of the project, a portion of the road particularly from Wudil to Gaya has not been completed.

He said it is regrettable that although over 50 kilometres of this portion of the road has been completed, however, a distance of fewer than 30 kilometres of the portion has not been completed, thereby, causing accidents among motorists.

Sumaila regretted that the non-completion of the project has compelled traders from within Nigeria and the neighbouring countries to divert their businesses to other states other than Kano.

He said: “Apart from cases of accident, armed robbery has been taking place on this road for several years. I have personally complained to the relevant authorities, yet, the problem persists.

“It is very sad that the Federal Ministries of Works and Housing and the contractor handling the project have failed to complete this project despite the allocation of huge amount of money in the budget. I will continue to push for the completion of this road.”

Senator Sumaila lamented that “this is the reason why we are fighting for fairness in the budgetary allocations to the six geopolitical zones, but some people for their selfish interests are kicking against our moves.

“With enough budgetary allocations to the geopolitical zones, this kind of project would have been completed in time. It is our duty as members of the National Assembly to channel the plights and yearnings of our constituents to the executive arm of government to do the right thing to improve their well-being.

“And one of the surest ways to achieve that is to ensure fairness and equity in budgetary allocations. This is the only way projects that have a direct bearing on the lives of the common man will be executed.

“Kano-Maiduguri, is one of the roads that is playing significant roles in the wellbeing of many Nigerians, therefore, the federal government should not joke with it.”

The senator, therefore, appealed to the Federal Ministries of Works and Housing and the contractor handling the project to ensure the completion of the road to save the lives of the people.

  • Why Senate President must vacate seat immediately, by senator

The humiliating defeat Senate President Bukola Saraki suffered in the Saturday presidential and National Assembly elections was an indication that he should vacate the Senate Presidency immediately, Senate Committee on Labour and Productivity Chairman Senator Abu Ibrahim said yesterday.

Ibrahim, who represents Katsina South in the upper chamber, told reporters in Abuja that Saraki should vacate the Senate Presidency seat to save the little goodwill left for him.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain also declared the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) completely dead in Katsina State. He said if Saraki failed to heed the damning defeat handed him by his own people to vacate the seat, he would be a lame duck Senate President “because his over-bloated image has been completely destroyed”.

He said the prediction that APC would retire Saraki from politics has become a reality.

Ibrahim added that the greatest undoing of Saraki in Kwara State politics was self-centeredness.

Ibrahim said: “Some of us predicted that APC will retire Saraki. It has come pass. It was obvious that Saraki was not going to win the election.

Saraki was always for himself. Selfishness does not serve any politician well. That was Saraki’s greatest undoing.

“Kwara people showed clearly that they were tired of Saraki and his antics. His image, mostly over-bloated, has been destroyed completely. If I were Saraki, I will throw in the towel immediately.

He should not wait until the end of the Eight Senate. If he refuses to go immediately, he will be a lame duck Senate President because nothing is left for him to cling on.

“Kwara people, his own people, have rejected him. If I were him, I will not wait any longer. He should leave the seat; Kwara people have spoken. I will congratulate the people of Kwara State for the outcome of the elections in that state.”

Asked why the APC failed to stop Saraki’s loyalist, Senator Dino Melaye, from returning to the Senate, Ibrahim said the party had dealt with the root, the branches were not important.

On PDP, Ibrahim said the party is dead in Katsina.

  • Ndoma-Egba urges supporters to remain calm

The senatorial candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) for Cross River Central, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, has urged his supporters to remain calm and patient for Saturday’s election.

Ndoma-Egba, who addressed reporters in Ikom Local Government Area over the postponed election, called on the public to give the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the benefit of the doubt.

According to him, the postponement was not a setback to the development of the democratic process, but rather a part of the country’s learning curve.

He said: “Let me not call it a setback, but a part of the learning curve. This is not the first time elections are being postponed. If you recall in 2015, elections were postponed. My concern is that we ought to have learnt from the 2015 experience to avoid a recurrence.

“Well for any postponement, you repeat whatever expenditure you incurred. It is like spending twice. I mean when you mobilise people, there are issues of logistics and you have to go back to the campaign field, because by law the elections stop 24 hours to the election, which means that the field is open again for us to go back, which means new expenditure.”
