  • Ekiti APC senatorial candidate decries faulty card readers

    The All Progressives Congress senatorial candidate in Ekiti North district of Ekiti State, Senator Olubunmi Adetumbi, yesterday, said the flaws of the smart card readers have been slowing down voting in some units in his ward.

    Adetumbi spoke after voting in his unit, saying the mammoth crowd being witnessed in his ward 2, Unit 003 at Ifaki Ekiti in Ido/Osi local government area of the state, was causing serious alarm.

    The former national assembly member added that most of the voters had waited for over two hours and still expecting to vote as a result of the situation.

    “Though INEC had brought another smart card reader which has started working but we pray it doesn’t malfunction again like we have been witnessing. You can see large crowd of voters still expecting to be accredited after waiting here since 8am.

  • Senatorial candidate makes case for new revenue formula

    President Muhammadu Buhari has been told to put in place the implementation of a new revenue formula to boost the financial base of the states and local governments to give them financial muscle to pay workers the N30,000 minimum wage.

    This, according to him, would give the people the dividends of democracy  and wipe out poverty in the land.

    A Lagos-based  politician and the PDP Lagos Central Senatorial Candidate, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, in a statement yesterday, said : “The review of the present revenue formula will enable the vast majority of  Nigerians enjoy dividends of democracy as funds will be available to the local governments to carry out major functions, such as the repair of local roads and provision of basic infrastructure.

    “As at now, our local governments are not functioning well. If they are well funded and functional, poverty  and sufferings will be reduced.

  • Senatorial candidate, ADC chair, two others kidnapped

    Gunmen have reportedly kidnapped the senatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for Ondo North, Jide Ipinsagba. Also abducted was the state Chairman, Bisi Ogungbemi.

    Ipinsagba, Ogungbemi and two other chieftains of the party were seized on Oba Akoko-Owo Road while returning from Ikare Akoko. They were heading for Akure. The incident occurred on Wednesday night.

    A source said the abduction occurred around 7pm when the politicians were returning to Akure after a political outing in Akoko.

    Ipinsagba recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the ADC.

    Those kidnapped alongside Ipinsagba and Ogungbemi were his driver and another party chieftain, Princess Abdulkareem.

    The Nation learnt that the victims’ vehicle was abandoned by the roadside, containing branded caps.

    A chieftain of the party in Ifedore Local Government, Gbenga Fapounda, urged the government to find solution to rampant cases of kidnapping and robbery in Akoko.

    ADC spokesman in the state Afolabi Akinrinlola expressed shock over the development, stressing that the party had reported the kidnap to security agencies.

    He urged security operatives to ensure unconditional release of their leaders, adding that the culprits should be arrested and prosecuted.

    The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Oba-Akoko, Oluwole Fabiyi, said the vehicle was abandoned by the roadside with branded caps.

    He said the key of the vehicle could not be found.

    Police spokesman Femi Joseph confirmed the incident, stressing that the police were on top of the situation.

    He said the victims would soon regain freedom, adding that the culprits would be arrested and prosecuted.

  • Ahmed is PDP Kwara South senatorial candidate

    KWARA State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed yesterday emerged as the Kwara South senatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the next year’s National Assembly elections.

    The governor emerged through a consensus arrangement.

    He was affirmed by all delegates from the district’s seven local government councils at the zonal primaries held in Omu Aran.

    In his reaction, the governor attributed his emergence to the inclusiveness championed by the Saraki political family in the state.

    Ahmed thanked PDP National Leader and Senate President Bukola Saraki for his strong leadership and applauded current Senator representing Kwara South Senatorial District, Dr. Rafiu Ibrahim, for his maturity and gallantry.  Ahmed also thanked party members and stakeholders for their support.

    “I am highly pleased by my affirmation as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Kwara South in the 2019 general elections. This victory belongs to our political family and reflects the consensus and inclusive approach it has traditionally adopted.

    “I thank my leader, stakeholders, party elders and officials at all levels, supporters and the good people of Kwara South and indeed Kwara State for this victory.

    “I salute my brother, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim for his support, maturity, gallantry and sportsmanship in the run-up to this victory. Senator Ibrahim has demonstrated his loyalty to our political family and has a bright political future ahead of him. I must also commend my brother, Mr. Gbenga Makanjuola for running a good race. It was all in a quest for service.”

  • Osun PDP senatorial candidate advises Muslims

    Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) senatorial candidate for Osun West bye election Otunba Ademola Adeleke has congratulated the Muslim Ummah on the successful completion of 2017 Ramadan Fast.

    In Eid-el-Fitri message issued by Olumide Lawal, Adeleke enjoined the people of Osun West to continue to live together in peace and harmony, no matter their political affiliations.

    He said Muslims and Christians worship the same God, who is also the one omnipotent Allah.

    The PDP candidate affirmed that he is in the race to strengthen the good works already begun by his late brother, Senator Isiaka Adeleke and consolidate on future gains for the people of Osun West.

    He added that like his late brother, who was known for politics without bitterness and violence, he is toeing the same line.

    Adeleke urged stakeholder in the July 8 election to embrace civility in their conducts.

    He said stakeholders in the election should avoid intimidation or harassment in whatever form.

    The PDP standard-bearer added that he is not a novice in Nigerian politics, having learnt the rope from his late father, Pa Raji Ayoola Adeleke and his brother Isiaka Adeleke and mastered it well.

    He, therefore, called on his supporters to come out on July 8 and cast their votes massively for him.

    He promised that they will not regret doing so.
