    African fashion market hits $31bn – Europe

    The founder, Africa Fashion Week London/Nigeria Ronke Ademiluyi says that the annual turnover from African fashion in Europe is about $31 billion.

    Ademiluyi, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos said that African designers are very creative which made their work to stand out.

    “The African fashion industry has according to the Euro monitor is worth $31 billion, annually and it is still growing.

    “A lot of big brands like the Swedish IKIA are doing a flagship collection of African furniture and require many African designers to work with them.

    “So for me, I think it’s a new revolution of African fashion it’s not going anywhere, it’s here to stay, our colours are vibrant and bold and everybody loves them so it’s a worldwide revolution.

    “The first year we had 53 designers from across Africa and 4, 500 visitors, and it’s been growing every year, it’s the biggest platform in the UK and Europe that promotes African fashion.

    “Every year we have about 20, 000 visitors who attend we have designers from various African countries, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, from all over the world.

    “They come and they experience the latest fashion out of Africa.’’

    She said that the recently concluded 2017 Africa Fashion Week, Nigeria “The Iconic Catwalk Show”, was a boost for Nigerian prints, fashion display and iconic sites to the world.

    NAN reports that the 2017 fashion week had in attendance over 10 fashion designers from Nigeria, Cameroon and Zimbabwe who presented models that showcased their creativeness in catwalks.

    Some of the designers included Vonnie Couture, Yikodeen (footwear), Valery Royal (Cameroon), Nyaradzai (Zimbabwe) and Telvin Nwafor.

    The highlight was the cultural show by Lixi Cardow, a fashion designer who displayed designs made from ABC fabrics (local Ankara) in various styles.

  • Int’l friendly: Fans decry NFF’s inability to broadcast match live

    Nigerians on Friday took to twitter to vent their anger for the failure of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and television stations to broadcast live the Super Eagles friendly match against Senegal.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fenerbahçe striker Moussa Sow opened scoring in the 53rd minute for the Teranga Lions of Senegal.

    But Manchester City’s youngster Kelechi Iheanacho, rescued a draw for Nigeria when he struck from the spot in the 81st minute.

    Some of the fans who were left fuming after the game also complained about their inability to access a live streaming link which had been shared by some officials of the NFF.

    Justice Prince said on his twitter handle that “such a match like Nigeria vs Senegal wasn’t on TV. Africa’s heavyweight. Isokay. Una #wehdone’’

    Wilson Jnr said: “It’s pathetic, even Supersports didn’t show our match…#NIG VS SEN’’.

    Favour Onyeoziri said: “So, you mean not even one TV station aired the Nigeria vs Senegal match?

    “One website even told me to pay N500 to stream the Nigeria vs Senegal match live. After paying, which network will I use to stream? AT&T?”

    Oma Akatugba said: “I absolutely enjoyed Nigeria vs Senegal but I didn’t watch it.’’

    For Yerekimea Tonbra, “Mr Pinnick just failed his KPI with the Nigeria Vs Senegal match, Nigerians couldn’t watch their national team in action and there was no commentary sef’’.

    Attamah Ifeanyi wrote: “I think it is pathetic considering how huge a football-loving nation Nigeria is. Not even a single TV station covered the Nigeria VS Senegal match!’’.

    Also, John Raul said: “No one in the most populated country in Africa watched the game! Shame #NGASEN.

    Meanwhile, one of the sites platforms which had internet broadcast rights have apologised for its failure to satisfy its clients.

    The apology letter on its site read: “Dear esteemed customers, we regret our inability to broadcast the Nigeria vs Senegal football match which was slated for 9 p.m. Nigerian time on March 23, 2017.

    “This was as a result of technical hitches experienced in getting the signals to us from our London technical partners.

    “Please be assured that full refunds of fees paid on our platform wwwurlivestream.com to watch the match will be paid within the next seven working days.

    “Once again, we are really sorry,’’ it said.

     

  • Ugbade confident Eagles will impress in London

    Ex-Interational Nduka Ugbade has thrown his weight behind the Super Eagles as they gear up for the two international friendlies against Senegal and Burkina Faso.

    Ugbade made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by a telephone interview on Wednesday in Abuja.

    NAN reports that the Super Eagles will engage Senegal at Barnet Football Club’s ground ‘The Hive’ on Thursday and then play the Etalons of Burkina Faso four days later.

    The two friendlies in London are being used to get the team ready for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers which start in June and the resumption of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in August.

    Ugbade, the first African to lift a World Cup when he captained the U-17 to win the cadet championship in 1985, noted that the team was a mixture of young talents and experience.

    He further told NAN that the friendlies would be a good test for the Eagles, adding that Senegal and Burkina Faso were worthy adversaries.

    “I’m happy we secured the games against some of Africa’s toughest teams.

    “Senegal with all their stars will be a very good test for Nigeria, while Burkina Faso are also tough as they showed at the last Africa Cup of Nations,” Ugbade said.

    “Both teams possess technical and tactical strength as we witnessed in the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon.

    “So, the games will help prepare the team for the tough tasks ahead as we have to do all we can to qualify for the World Cup and Nations Cup.

    “These kinds of games are good for the players and the coaches too, to enable them see areas that need to be worked on.

    “I believe Nigeria will do well in the games as the new coach, Gernot Rohr, has shown what he can do in the few games he has been in charge.”

    Barrow sworn in as Gambian president, calls for unity

    Mr Adama Barrow was on Thursday sworn in as the third president of The Gambia in an inauguration which took place in the country’s embassy in Senegal.

    President of the Gambian Bar Association, Sherrif Tambadou, conducted the exercise as Barrow took the oath of office.

    Barrow was relocated to Dakar by the ECOWAS Mediation Team led by Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari.

    Ousted Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh, who had earlier conceded defeat in the Dec. 1 presidential election, but later rejected the result of the poll, has yet to vacate office in spite of regional and international intervention.

    Barrow, in his inaugural speech, said that there was no loser in the elections and called for national unity among all citizens.

    He also urged personnel of the Gambian Armed Forces to remain loyal to the Constitution.

    “As Commander-in-Chief, I call on all personnel of the armed forces and other security agencies to be loyal to the Constitution and the Republic.

    “As their Commander-in-Chief, I command all members of the Armed Forces to remain in the barracks and those found wanting or in possession of firearms without my command shall be considered rebels,” he said.

    The president also said that his administration had developed a think-tank to put in place inclusive development, and urged all Gambians to “join hands to effect the change that will bring liberty and prosperity to everyone”.

    He commended the efforts of ECOWAS, African Union, United Nations and the international community for the efforts made to support the will of the Gambian people.

    The inauguration ceremony was attended by ECOWAS Commission President, Marcel de Souza, ECOWAS Parliament President, Moustapha Cisse Lo and ECOWAS Commissioner, Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Mrs Alima Ahmed.

    The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UN Office for West Africa, Mohammed Ibn Chambas, was also present at the ceremony.

    HOST Nigeria yesterday  qualified for next year’s FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 after a 6-1 defeat of  Morocco in the  second semi finals at the 2016 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations held at the Eko Atlantic.

    The victory  guarantees the Super Sand Eagles’ qualification to their  third FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup finals  after previous appearances  in Brazil  and Italy.

    In the other semi-final earlier, Senegal became the first African team to qualify for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 after defeating Egypt 5-2 in the semi-finals of the 2016 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations in Nigeria.

    The west African nation participated in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Portugal 2015 where they failed to progress out of a tough Group A including hosts Portugal, Japan and Argentina.

    Senegal have participated in five Beach Soccer World Cups to date with quarter-final appearances in 2007 and 2011 representing their best finishes in their tournament history.

    Next year’s FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup will take place in the Bahamas from 27 April to 7 May.

    In a related development, FIFA’s scribe Secretary-General, Fatma Samoura will attend the final of the ongoing Beach Soccer African Cup of Nations today reports Goal.com.

    Vice President of Beach Soccer World Wide Joan Cusco disclosed on Friday that the world football governing body scribe will arrive in Nigeria on December 18 on a one-day working visit.

    “The FIFA secretary general [Fatma Samoura] will be coming for the Beach Soccer AFCON finals on Sunday,” Cusco disclosed in Lagos.

    Her visit falls on the same day the 2016 annual general assembly of Nigeria Football Federation will be held at Best Western Hotel, Victoria Island, and Lagos.

    The elite should stop insisting on old ways of doing things – Buhari

    President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday called on the Nigerian elite to stop insisting that things should be done the ‘old way’, which have impoverished the nation over the years.

    He made the call while speaking at a meeting with a group of Nigerians in the Diaspora, on the margins of the 3rd Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa in Dakar, Senegal.

    According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President also said his administration is on the right track to improve the image of the country by entrenching accountability and probity in governance.

    He told the 11-man Nigerian delegation of association leaders resident in Senegal and Cote D’ Ivoire, that the last 16 years of poor handling of the nation’s resources and infrastructure have continued to impact negatively on the country.

    He said: “This administration is pleased we won the election, we are pleased Nigerians are cooperating with us. But the problems are so enormous that we need the cooperation of Nigerians, particularly the elite.

    “They (elite) should reflect on the condition of the country, and stop making expensive demands because things cannot be done the old way,’’ he said.

    On the welfare of Nigerians in the Diaspora, the President assured them that the Federal Government will continue to promote good neighborliness and improve the negative perception about Nigerians abroad.

    “Nigerians are known for their competitiveness and I am very passionate about Nigeria. I will continue to preach good neighborliness and work hard to improve the numerous human and material resources in the country,’’ he stated.

    In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian community, Cote D’ Ivoire, Alhaji Adebayo Yahaya, commended the President for his bold and unflinching fight against corruption.

    “Nigerians are praying for your success, don’t relent, do not lose hope, the almighty God is behind you,” he said.

    Also speaking, the President of the Nigerian community, Senegal, Mr Osas Edigin, told the President that Nigerians in the country have enjoyed excellent relationship with their hosts.

  • FIFA-FREE WINDOW: Eagles, Senegal clash in London

    Sportinglife can reveal exclusively today that chieftians of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have secured an international friendly between the Super Eagles and their Senegalese counterparts at a yet to be named stadium in London.

    Sportinglife scooped further that the Senegalese game is the second of two matches that the Eagles would play in March 2017, the first been a game against an unnamed African country, with the venue yet to be disclosed.

    Interestingly, Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr is expected to depart the  Federal Capital Territory (FCT) tonight for France on vacation for an undisclosed period, since the Eagles don’t have matches until March 2017.

    But those who should know at the Glasshouse revealed that Rohr will cut his vacation to watch the matches of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations holding in Gabon, where he is expected to watch two of Nigeria’s group opponents in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Cameroon and Algeria.

    Nasarawa beat Senegal’s Generation Foot 2-1

    Nasarawa defeated Generation Foot of Senegal 2-1 in a Confederation Cup preliminary round clash.

    Striker Tayo Fabiyi gave hosts Nasarawa an early lead at the Abuja National Stadium, before the visitors drew level.

    Nasarawa grabbed the match winner in the dying moments of the contest through Seun Sogbesan after a Generation Foot player handled the ball inside his box off a free kick taken by skipper Emmanuel Makama.

    The return leg match will be played in Senegal in a fortnight.

    The Banker Magazine has named UBA Chad and Senegal as Bank of the Year.  Both awards were presented at the Hilton Bankside, London.

    UBA Chad is winning the award for the first time while UBA Senegal has won the award for four consecutive times- 2012, 2013 and last year.

    Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), UBA Senegal, Amie Sow, SAID: “We are proud of winning this award for the fourth consecutive   year. It shows we are now the dominant bank in Senegal and the bank all other banks have to look forward to beat. The recognition will only continue to challenge us to explore opportunities to further deepen our market share in the country.’’

    The aim of the awards, according to the magazine “is to highlight industry wide excellence within the global banking community.”

    The Banker selects one bank from  120 participants. Over 1,000 applications are collected and judges select winning banks based on those they believe have made the most progress over the past 12 months.
