  • Man arraigned for stabbing

    A man, Ramoni Kareem, who allegedly stabbed a man on the head with a broken bottle, is facing trial at an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

    The 38-year-old, who lives at No. 42, Debola St., Iyana-Ilogbo, Ota, has pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused and others still at large committed the offences on March 30 at about 2.00 p.m. at Ijako in Ota.

    He said the accused and his accomplices assaulted a man, Emmanuel Ojo, by stabbing him with a broken bottle on the head.The offences contravened Sections 355 and 416 of the Criminal Code,  Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    In his ruling, the Senior Magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N75,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Banwo said the sureties must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

    The case was adjourned until May 3 for hearing.

    Court sentences man to three months’ imprisonment for contempt

    A 38-year-old, Tadujeen Folorunsho, is to spend the next two months in jail for contempt of court, an Ota Magistrates ’ Court in Ogun ruled on Monday.

    The senior magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, gave the verdict without giving the convict an option of fine.

    Folorunsho, who lives at No. 28, Akintoye St. Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, Ogun, had pleaded guilty to the charge of contempt.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 14 at about 9.00 a. m. at the court.

    Gbesi said the defendant disregarded the court’s order by jumping bail.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 133 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

  • Man arraigned for stabbing minor

    Emmanuel Anya, 33, who allegedly stabbed an eight-year-old girl on the forehead with a spoon was on Monday arraigned before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

    Anya, who lives at No. 32 Olufunmilayo Street, Joju Road, Ota, is facing a charge of assaulting a minor.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offence at about 2.00 p.m. on March 14 at his residence.

    Gbesi said that the accused allegedly assaulted the eight-year-old girl by using spoon on her forehead, which gave her bruises.

    He said that it was the noise of the girl that alerted neighbours who reported the matter to the police.

    Gbesi said that the offence contravened Section 355 of the Criminal Code Vol. 11, Law of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S.O. Banwo, granted the accused N50,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    The case was adjourned until April 6 for hearing.

  • Two men docked over theft of phone

    Two men, Afilaka Sunday, 30, and Raymond Michael, 23, were on Tuesday arraigned in a Sango-Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun, for allegedly stealing a Lenovo cell phone valued at N50,000.

    The defendants of no fixed addresses are facing two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused persons committed the offences on March 3 at about 9.3p.m. at Ewupe Road, Ota.

    Gbesi said that they conspired to steal a Lenovo cell phone valued at N50, 000 belonging to one Adeola Omolayo.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

    The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, granted them bail in the sum of N100, 000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

    Banwo ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.
    The case was adjourned till April 10 for hearing.

    Police arraign four over alleged theft of N700,000

    The Police in Ogun on Wednesday charged four men: Ogunkoya Adebayo (22), Olufemi Adelaja (24), Onini Brown (20) and Ifeoluwa Olugbenga (27), before an Ota Magistrates’ Court for allegedly breaking into the house of one Sadiku Ogundimi and stealing N700,000 cash.
    The accused persons, whose addresses were unknown, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and burglary.
    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused, and others still at large, committed the offences on Feb. 10 at 4:00 p.m. at Ijamido Street, Ota.
    Gbesi said that the accused and his accomplices conspired amongst themselves to break into the house of the complainant and stole N700,000 cash.
    He said that the offences contravened Sections 390 (9), 413 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S.O. Banwo, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N750,000 with one surety in the like sum.

     

    He said that the surety must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

     

    Banwo also directed that the surety should swear to an affidavit of means and produce two-years’ tax clearance from the Ogun Government.

     

    In addition, the surety should submit four recent passport photographs to the court and must possess a reasonable means of identification.

     

    The case was adjourned to April 14, for hearing.

  • Kidnappers abduct Magistrate, two others in Edo

    Kidnappers operating along Benin-Auchi express road have abducted a serving Senior Magistrate simply identified as Hassana.
    The police orderly of Hassana whose name was given as Marcus was shot and is currently receiving treatment.
    Family sources said Hassana was going to Ehor, headquarters of Uhunmwode Local Government when she and two others were abducted.
    The source said the kidnappers randomly picked motorists along the road and whisked them away.
    It was learnt that after Hassana orderly was shot, he driver managed to drive the vehicle into an earth road which led to a village where he thought they would be safe.
    But the kidnappers struck again and took the Magistrate away.
    As at press time, no contact has been made to her family. 
    A police source the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has already directed the Commissioner of Police in the state, Chris Ezike to ensure the immediate release of the abducted persons and arrest of the abductors.
    Spokesman for the police, DSP Abiodun Osifo, confirmed the abduction and said policemen were already combing the bush with a view to releasing the victims.
