The Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has urged Seplat Energy Producing Nigeria Unlimited (SEPNU) to accelerate its natural gas delivery efforts for domestic use and export.

Ekpo made this call at a meeting with SEPNU’s senior management, led by Managing Director, Dotun Isiaka, at the NNPC Towers office in Abuja, yesterday.

The meeting provided an opportunity for SEPNU’s leadership to brief the Minister on their progress since taking over operatorship of assets from ExxonMobil in December 2024, with a focus on the gas components of the divestment deal.

In a press statement signed by the Spokesman for the Minister, Louis Ibah, and obtained by The Nation, Ekpo commended SEPNU’s management for the successful takeover and expressed optimism about their potential to expedite Gas Sales Agreements (GSAs) negotiations and execution. He noted that these agreements are crucial for catalysing the gas industry and delivering the much-needed natural gas to the nation through priority projects.

The Minister emphasised the importance of SEPNU working harmoniously with its host communities to deliver value to all stakeholders and solidify its position as a leading independent indigenous energy company.

Furthermore, Ekpo urged SEPNU to remain committed to its project timelines, stressing that adherence to these timelines is critical for the successful execution of their projects to deliver the desired positive results to the nation’s economy.

The Gas Minister lamented Nigeria’s paradoxical situation as a major gas-endowed nation with alarmingly low natural gas utilisation, saying operators like SEPNU should partner with the government to correct the trend.

Ekpo emphasised the government’s commitment to promoting indigenous participation in the oil and gas sector, driving economic growth through sustainable energy development, and fostering a conducive environment for investment. He expressed his willingness to collaborate with Seplat Energy to overcome legislative and regulatory hurdles, such that would enhance the company’s ability to deliver natural gas to the Country.

Isiaka informed the minister that the company has engaged potential offtakers for natural gas from its assets. He therefore solicited the Minister’s cooperation to overcome legislative and regulatory challenges, which would facilitate their operations and enable them to meet their targets for major gas projects.

“Our average daily production also increased by 8.3 per cent in 2023, to 47,758 boepd (barrels of oil equivalent per day), from 44,104 bopd in 2022, with revenue from oil and gas sales for 2023 rising to 11.5 per cent to $1.061 billion from $952 million in 2022. “I am happy to say that Seplat Energy has been helping the nation in the sense that the tax that we are paying the government is very significant, not to talk of the dividend that we have been getting in dollars, which has never gone down.

“Also, this is one of the three companies that I have seen in the capital market having many independent directors, and this is good for corporate governance. Seplat’s dual listing is accompanied by the highest level of corporate governance adherence and this is good,” Umar said.

Seplat Energy to double gas production with ANOH plant

Seplat Energy Plc has completed installation works at its ANOH gas plant, raising the prospects of imminent double in the gas production at the company.

The ANOH Gas Processing Company (AGPC), an incorporated joint venture between Seplat Energy and NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) Limited, is delivering the ANOH gas plant with Phase One processing capacity of 300mmscfd.

Upon commencement of operations, the plant will deliver dry gas, condensate, and LPG to customers. It is envisaged that AGPC will sell the gas and LPG domestically, and the condensates to the international market.

The other key steps to first gas, as outlined in the company’s Interim Results announcement, were the drilling and hook-up of the upstream wells and completion of essential third-party infrastructure:  the OB3 pipeline river crossing and Spur Line connecting OB3 to the gas plant.

Completion of the third well, ASSN-05, was previously announced and the fourth and final well, ASSN-06, planned ahead of first gas has also now been completed by the upstream unit operator, SPDC.

The mechanical completion of the ANOH gas plant on December 29, 2023 was in line with the revised timetable for the project and was achieved without a single recordable Lost Time Incident (LTI) across 11 million man hours, a testament to the focus of the whole team on safe and secure operations.

Chief Executive Officer, Seplat Energy Plc, Mr. Roger Brown, said the company now looks forward to the completion of the necessary plant pre-commissioning activities and essential third-party infrastructure which will enable commissioning of the gas plant and commencement of operations.

He affirmed that the company’s previously communicated guidance for first gas remains unchanged.

“ANOH is an important strategic project for Seplat, it will roughly double our gas production, and we are focused on the path to first gas.

“Once completed, ANOH will provide two income streams for Seplat: wet gas sales from OML 53 to the gas plant and dividends from the joint venture ANOH Gas Processing Company, which will operate the plant.

“ANOH’s gas will further reduce Seplat’s and Nigeria’s carbon intensity and increase energy supplied to the Nigerian domestic market,” Brown said.
