  • Real Madrid suffer shock home defeat to Girona

Real Madrid’s resurgent La Liga run skidded to a halt as they fell to a shock 1-2 defeat at home by struggling Girona on Sunday.

The loss, in which captain Sergio Ramos was sent off in added time, left them nine points adrift of leaders FC Barcelona.

Real Madrid looked on course for a sixth consecutive league win when Casemiro leapt highest to meet a Toni Kroos cross and head them in front midway through the first half.

But Girona, who had not won in the league since November, came out with a vengeance in the second half.

They leveled in the 65th minute with a Cristhian Stuani penalty kick, after a handball by Ramos.

Spanish striker Cristian Portu gave Girona an unlikely lead 10 minutes later, nipping in front of Real Madrid’s lacklustre defender Marcelo to nod in on the rebound.

That was after Thibaut Courtois could only parry a shot from visiting forward Anthony Lozano.

Real Madrid substitutes Gareth Bale and Vinicius Jr each squandered opportunities to level for the European champions.

Things got worse when Ramos earned a second yellow card in added time and was sent off for the 25th time in club football.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Courtois came close to salvaging an equaliser but headed wide deep in stoppage time.

The defeat left Real Madrid third in the standings on 45 points, nine behind table-toppers FC Barcelona and seven back from second-placed Atletico Madrid.

  • Sergio Ramos ‘cries’ as he carries Luka Modric’s Ballon d’Or

Luka Modric shared the Ballon d’Or with his Real Madrid teammates as the squad posed for a picture ahead of training on Tuesday.

The Croatia international received the ultimate recognition and secured his place in history at the Grand Palais in Paris on Monday night.

Modric was in the centre of the photo alongside Sergio Ramos with the prize on the pitch.

The centre-back uploaded a picture to his Instagram page on Tuesday of himself kissing Modric’s Ballon d’Or trophy alongside the midfielder.

The caption read: ‘My respect, @lukamodric10.’

Ramos also posted a picture of himself holding the prize on to his Instagram story.

Ramos pretended to cry and used several crying face emojis as he asked when he’ll win the Ballon d’Or.

The prize has been the property of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the past 10 years and Modric – the first ‘new’ winner since Brazil great Kaka in 2007 – has had an exceptional 12 months.

He was instrumental in helping his club, Real Madrid, win a third consecutive Champions League in May and then became the heartbeat in the Croatia team that reached the World Cup final.

  • ‘Lazy’ midfield, ‘suicidal’ defence, Spain stung by England loss

Spain’s 3-2 defeat to England in the Nations League on Monday not only burst the bubble of optimism surrounding new coach Luis Enrique.

It also dredged up unpleasant memories of their woeful World Cup campaign in Russia.

England raced to a 3-0 lead and the hosts were booed off at the break in Seville.

Spain fought back in the second half with two goals, but it was not enough to prevent Luis Enrique suffering his first defeat since taking over in July.

The coach’s arrival had lifted the gloom after Spain’s disastrous showing at the World Cup, where they were knocked out by the unfancied hosts in the last 16.

“The doubts that seemed buried after the horrors of Russia are back.

“They took a whack from reality that sent them back three months,” said daily newspaper Marca on Tuesday.

Newspaper AS said Spain should have had a penalty but delivered a harsh assessment of the side’s performance, saying “the midfield was lazy and the defence was too high up and suicidal”.

Centre back Sergio Ramos scored Spain’s second goal in stoppage time but he was criticized by the media.

“There’s a Madrid fan in the office who says he needs just one minute of a game to know which version of Sergio Ramos is playing.

“When he plays in Seville (his birthplace) he practically always shows off … he subtracts more than he contributes.

“It seems that in his brain he only hears one sentence. `You are the best Sergio, the best.’ It might be too late now but maybe people shouldn’t say it so much,” wrote Juan Carlos Diaz in Marca

La Liga President Javier Tebas said Spain’s fans also let the country down after some of them booed the English national anthem.

“National anthems represent the noblest and most profound feelings of many people. They must always be respected.

“We have to apologise to the English and make that what happened yesterday doesn’t happen again,” he said on Twitter.

  • Ramos gets engaged to 40-year old girlfriend (Pictures)

Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos is now engaged to long-term girlfriend, Pilar Rubio, having popped the question while the pair were on holiday.

Ramos has been taking some downtime following his World Cup heartache, which saw Spain crash out to Russia in the round of 16.

But the Spanish captain now has reason to cheer after his girlfriend of six years accepted his proposal at a romantic dinner on Monday evening.

Ramos shared the news on Instagram with two pictures of himself accompanied by his bride-to-be and her new huge ring.

The images were captioned with a simple: ‘She said yes. I love you… forever.’

The pair were dressed to the nines and had a late night, romantic dinner on a balcony where Ramos brought his fiancee a bouquet of flowers, as well as the diamond rock.

Ramos has been dating Spanish TV presenter and journalist, Rubio, since 2012.

Rubio, 40, was previously a model and and has also won awards for best television reporter. For the past four years she has been working on Spanish comedy show, El Hormiguero.

They have three children together, all boys. The oldest, Sergio, was born in May 2014 and the two younger children are named, Marco and Alejandro – the latter of which was born in March this year

Ramos has made the most of his time off having taken his family on holiday and will now return to Madrid with a fiancee.

He will soon have to team up the squad for pre-season, having had his time off earlier than he would have hoped following Spain’s premature World Cup exit.

He will also join up with new manager, Julen Lopetegui, who he will know well from his time with the Spanish national team, but will have to get accustomed to life without Cristiano Ronaldo who completed a £100million to Juventus on Monday.

  • Expect no less than before at Russia 2018 as quarter-finals get underway

The 2018 FIFA World Cup enters the quarter-finals stage on Friday, with the France versus Uruguay fixture at Nizhny Novgorod kicking off a two-day line-up of four potentially-explosive matches.

The quarter-finals have come with the usual expectations and surprise element of any tournament of this nature, yet they have not come without a trace of the unexpected.

The first round/group phase did not do so much to shock us, other than see off title-holders Germany, world number 10 Poland and the five African sides.

However, the Round of 16 has lived up to expectations, not just with the exit of 2010 champions Spain, two-times champions Argentina and Portugal, but the teams’ star players.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Andres Iniesta, Isco, Diego Costa, Angel Di Maria,Gonzalo Higuain, Ricardo Quaresma, Sergio Ramos and Javier Mascherano are now watching the competition from their homes.

They joined the likes of Tony Kroos, Thomas Muller, Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Manuel Neuer and Robert Lewandowski who had been on the sidelines pretty much earlier.

Their situation, very much unfavoured, is what the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, as well as Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe will now try to avoid.

France with their array of megastars such as Pogba, Mbappe, Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kante will be wary of what Suarez and Cavani can do upfront.

But the Uruguayan defence line should worry them much more, with the Atletico Madrid defensive pair of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez at the centre of affairs.

Later on Friday, Belgium who made an incredible comeback from two goals down to win 3-2 will face Brazil at Kazan and knowing that a confrontation with Brazil or Belgium awaits.

Brazil should rather be wary of Belgium, with Eden Hazard and Romelo Lukaku, have gone 23 games unbeaten and have the best record at this tournament so far.

They have won all their matches so far, scoring 12 and conceding four goals, but the grittiness which saw them through against Japan is something Brazil will need much of.

Brazil have struggled to survive against Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia, in spite of Neymar, Willian, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus and Marcelo not looking out of form.

However, the fact that they have not conceded again since the only goal against Switzerland in their opening match is something Belgium will have to think a lot about.

England have been thinking so much that they now have a good chance of another World Cup win since 1966, with the tournament draw being good to them.

They do not to have to face the likes of France, Uruguay, Brazil or Belgium until July 15, and they feel Sweden may not be too much headache.

But when they face off on Saturday in Samara, they will have to contend with a side which has shown so much resilience, even in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

They beat The Netherlands and Italy in qualifying for Russia, made life difficult for Germany and beat South Korea and Mexico in Russia, and eliminated Switzerland in the Round of 16.

Usually a quiet side, Sweden can bring down England if they keep under check Harry Kane and Jesse Lingard, as well as likely substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jamie Vardy.

The good thing for the Swedes is that, in spite of Kane’s leading goalscorer status, England do not have what they do not have, and this makes the game balanced.

Russia have not disappointed so far, and it is a good preview for them as they head to Fisht Stadium in Sochi to host Croatia on Saturday.

It is a likely quiet and not-extraordinary game, with Russia being the lowest FIFA-ranked team at the tournament.

While Russian hopes have risen since the penalty kicks shootout defeat of Spain, it may just serve the hosts well not to count their chickens b efore they are hatched.

Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic have provided the needed midfield inspiration, while Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Perisic have spearheaded offensive runs which have produced not goals but team game stability.

The Croats are aware of their capability and Modric, while speaking at their pre-match press conference on Wednesday, said team compatibility is a weapon they would use to great effect.

“We know it is going to be tough against Russia, especially as they are the hosts, but we know ourselves and what we can do. We will do it as expected,’’ he said.

However, will they be able to reenact the performance that led them to the 1998 semi-finals in France, having to play against a team and its expectant nation of 144 million?

It is however Russia’s best World Cup run since the 1966 semi-finals appearance, and they will want to go further than this quarter-finals stage not just because they are the hosts.

They have shown good strength of character with the way they overcame Spain, and swung their compatriots who never believed in them before behind them.

While they can shock the Croats, and which can happen, it may just be one other shock in a tournament that is still capable of bringing up more shocks.

  • Messi is better than Maradona, says Ramos

Spain captain, Sergio Ramos has responded to a putdown from Argentina great Diego Maradona by making an unlikely declaration of admiration for Lionel Messi.

Messi is his usual enemy as the talisman of Real Madrid’s arch-rivals Barcelona.

Maradona, his country’s 1986 World Cup-winning captain, remarked this week that “Ramos is no superstar, the real superstar defender is Diego Godin” when comparing Spain’s serial-winner Ramos with the Uruguay captain.

Ramos was asked what he made of Maradona’s comments after Spain’s 1-0 World Cup Group B win over Iran, and chose to praise Messi, who has led Barcelona to numerous wins over Real Madrid.

“I respect Maradona because he is an all-time great; I think he was a star.

“But I’ll also tell you that Argentine football knows Maradona is light years behind their number one player, which is Messi,” Ramos said.

Messi, who lost the last World Cup final to Germany as captain of Argentina, missed a penalty in his side’s 1-1 draw with Iceland.

He is under pressure to propel his side to victory over Group D leaders Croatia on Thursday.

  • ‘Punish Ramos’ petition hits 500,000 signatures

A petition calling for action to be taken against Sergio Ramos for the challenge that injured Mohamed Salah in the Champions League final has reached its original target of 500,000 signatures.

Salah lasted just half an hour of Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in Kiev after being forced off with a suspected dislocated shoulder sustained in a battle for the ball with opposition captain Ramos.

Replays showed Ramos had hold of Salah’s arm as he fell to the ground, pulling the Egypt international down with him and – in the opinion of the petition’s author – causing the injury.

The petition, which was expanded on Wednesday to call for one million signatures, is addressed to UEFA and FIFA and also criticises Ramos’ alleged play-acting during the final.

“Sergio Ramos represents an awful example to future generations of football players,” reads the petition description on Change.org. “Instead of winning matches fairly, he uses tricks that defy the spirit of the game and fair play.

“UEFA and FIFA should take measures against Ramos and similar players, using the video recordings of matches to keep the spirit of the game.”

An Egyptian lawyer launched a €1billion lawsuit against Ramos on Monday, but Salah is confident he will be ready for the World Cup.

Liverpool physio Ruben Pons thinks the forward, who has travelled to Spain for treatment, will be out of action for approximately three weeks. Egypt begin their Group A campaign against Uruguay in Ekaterinburg on June 15.

Neither UEFA nor FIFA has commented on the petition.

Ramos gives partner post award special

Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos certainly knows how to celebrate a special achievement. After Monday’s recognition of his effort by World Soccer ruling body and stakeholders of the round leather game, Ramos took time off to enjoy a ‘just for two’ moment with his partner Pilar Rubio in London.

The Spanish star attended the glitzy bash on Monday evening where he was named in the FIFPro World XI alongside four Real Madrid team-mates.

Ramos remained in London the day after the event and took Pilar Rubio out for some dinner at a restaurant.

The couple who are expecting their third child together — posed for a picture, which was posted on Instagram by the defender, while enjoying a date night.

Ramos, who posed with what looked like a glass of white wine, captioned his social media post: ‘Dinner time with my love.’

Meanwhile, his manager Zinedine Zidane — who claimed the top men’s coach at the awards on Monday — has heaped praise on Ramos.

The defender has played a key part in Real Madrid’s recent success and captained them to a second successive Champions League triumph last season.

And Zidane believes the 31-year-old centre back ‘is the most important player’ in the team.

‘Sergio Ramos is our captain and knows his status within the side,’ Zidane told Radio Marca.

‘In the end, he is the most important player in the team as he is the leader.

‘Madrid are the best club in the world and our goal is to keep making history with all these wonderful players and people who are at the club.’

Real Madrid win first La Liga title since 2012

Real Madrid won their first La Liga title since 2012 thanks to a final-day 2-0 victory at Malaga on Sunday and in spite of FC Barcelona’s 4-2 win over Eibar.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored early in the game to settle the nerves, latching onto Isco’s through ball to step around Carlos Kameni and tap into an empty net.

Karim Benzema then added their second goal after the break after Kameni had parried Sergio Ramos’ shot.

Real, who had only needed a draw to win the title, now face Juventus in the Champions League final aiming to complete a double

FC Barcelona, who had won the past two titles, came from 2-0 down to beat Eibar 4-2 at the Nou Camp.

But they had also needed Real to slip up if they were going to retain the trophy.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Real Madrid finished with 93 points, while FC Barcelona ended with 90 points to stay second.

The result means Zinedine Zidane, in his first full season as Real boss, has recorded another first.

He is the first manager to lead Madrid to the Spanish league title since Jose Mourinho did five years ago.

If Real beat Juventus in Cardiff, they will become the first team to successfully defend the Champions League.

Zidane had won the tournament six months into the job last summer.
