I’ll constitute national convention committee soon – Sheriff

The National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has said he would soon set up a committee to work out modalities for the party’s national convention.

Sheriff made this known while briefing newsmen on Monday in Abuja on the recommendations of the party’s Reconciliation Committee, chaired by Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa.

He said that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party was already consulting with members and leaders of the party as part of process for constituting the convention committee.

The chairman said that he was also talking with lawmakers at the National Assembly and State Assemblies on the platform of the party as part of political solution recommended by the Dickson committee.

He added that he had commenced consultation with the Board of Trustees (BoT) through its Chairman, Sen. Walid Jibrin, who, he said, had promised to get back to him for a formal meeting with BoT members.

He said that by next week they would meet with the party’s national ex-officio members from the 36 states.

“Everywhere in our party, we are working across the board; everybody is working for the party to come back to its position in 1999.

“We are for peace and that does not mean that we are afraid of anybody; we will not be relenting.

“We need our party back in power and we will carry everybody that means well for PDP along.

“I assure you that PDP will not be destroyed; PDP is a creation of God and cannot be destroyed by anybody.

“We are on course and we will go as planned. For everybody that believes that it is not political solution, they are on their own,” he said.

Sheriff reiterated his determination not to contest the national chairmanship at the national convention, adding that his NWC members had the right to contest for any position of their choice.

On his presidential ambition for 2019, he said that it was a decision left for God.

“Every position I occupied in life, God made it possible. I am a firm believer in the will of God. I told you I will not run for the chairmanship position, the rest we leave to God.”

He, however, said that the party’s chairmanship position would definitely be for the Southern part of the country. (NAN)

Igali noted that future champions are made when the younger generations are interested in any sport of their choice.

“Future Champions are from recreation first of all, you have to fall in love with the sport. Secondly, take it seriously because the centre is for both beginners and experts in the sporting field”, Igali said.

Igali revealed that, “Because of what I’ve been able to become through wrestling, that is only worthwhile for me to put up a structure and recreational facility for younger kids to have the opportunity to practice their gifted sports.

“My existence is based on the profit made from wrestling as a sport. It is from physical exercise, recreation especially at the younger age can discover the hidden talents of these kids”, the Bayelsa legislator said to NationSport.

  • PDP panel gives Sheriff conditions for convention

PDP panel gives Sheriff conditions for convention

A reconciliation committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has set conditions for a national convention to be presided over by the National Chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff.

The convention is tentatively fixed for June 30.

According to the panel, the National Convention Planning Committee (NCPC), to be set up by Sheriff must draw its membership from all the existing organs of the party and other key stakeholders.

The Chairman of the panel, Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, submitted the panel’s report to Sheriff at the party’s secretariat on Tuesday.

Speaking with journalists shortly after submitting the report, Dickson said an acceptable convention remained the ultimate resolution to the party’s leadership crisis.

Among those listed as members of the NCPC include seven serving governors, seven serving senators, 12 members of the House of Representatives, six members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and six national vice chairmen.

Others are 18 zonal chairmen, six speakers of state assemblies, six former governors, former presiding officers of the National Assembly, six prominent women leaders, six youth leaders, six former ministers and 12 others to be nominated by Sheriff in consultation with key stakeholders.

The governor added that even after the Supreme Court must have ruled on the appeal filed against Sheriff by the Ahmed Makarfi led Caretaker Committee, the party must still go for the convention.

He said Sheriff too was in support of the proposed convention, just like other stakeholders, adding however that mutual mistrust and lack of faith in the present leadership of the party remained an issue.

The governor appealed to other elective party office holders who are still holding on to their positions to let go and seek fresh mandate in the planned convention.

The Dickson report was however silent on whether Sheriff would be eligible to renew his mandate through the convention, where new set of party leaders are expected to emerge.

Thugs attack Ankio Briggs, anti-Dickson protesters

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, on Tuesday, boasted that only the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would win future elections in the state.

The governor advised other party members including loyalists of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to renounced their membership and join the PDP if they had ambitions to contest any future electoral positions in the state.

Dickson spoke at the Peace Park, where a crowd of PDP loyalists mobilised to celebrate his first year of his second term and five years in office as the governor.

The governor, who danced to Ijaw war songs before addressing a mammoth crowd of his supporters said: “This state is unshakably PDP. When they tried to be funny, don’t worry, the reason I am Ofurumapepe leading this party is that when the battle never tough, Ofurumapepe doesn’t come out.

“Anybody who wants to contest an election, let me put you on notice, the only platform that can win an election in this state under my leadership is the PDP. Which election will be tougher than the one we won with me as the candidate?

“We will lead the party to win all elections in the state, God willing. We have nothing to hide. We are busy chasing the challenges of government in Bayelsa and at this time our hands as we have always said are opened.

“The doors of PDP in Bayelsa are open even for those who made mistakes, our big umbrella is waiting to receive all of them back. If they don’t come back no way for elections in the state. Tell them. If they come back, accept them”.

The Peace Park, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, was the destination for all lovers of Dickson, as he marked his anniversary.

It was fanfare as a crowd of supporters adorned in their best attires marched the streets of Yenagoa to show Dickson love on Valentine day.

As early as 7:00 a.m, supporters of the Restoration Government from various local government areas started processions from Igbogene, the outskirts of Yenagoa to Peace Park, located opposite Government House, Onopa, a distance of over 40km.

The residents who marched according to their local government areas of Brass, Yenagoa, Nembe, Kolokuma-Opokuma, Southern Ijaw, Ekeremor and Ogbia, defied the scorching sun as they, drummed, sang and danced on the streets.

Hundreds of groups including youths carrying pro-Dickson‘s banners, placards and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) materials to rejoice with their governor.

Women were the most colourful in their different uniform wrappers, blouses and scarfs with a touch of red, Valentine’s colour.

The venue was congested with youths, all political appointees, federal and state legislators, national and state PDP’s executive members, security operatives, journalists and traditional rulers.

But prior to the event thugs disrupted an anti-Dickson protest led by a Niger Delta activist, popularly referred to the Amazone of the Niger Delta, Ankio Briggs.

Briggs and other protesters assembled around the Tombia Roundabout to commence a demonstration against Dickson‘s decision to confine herdsmen in the state within the Bayelsa Palm area of the state.

The activist, who came from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to lead the protest under the auspices of Ijaw Women Connect (IWC) was disorganised by thugs in the presence of security operatives including the police.

Briggs said the thugs injured some of the protesters and stole her telephone handsets, identity cards and other personal effects.

    [news_list display=”tag” tag=”Dickson” count=”2″ show_more=”on”]

She said they pushed her down in the presence of a senior police officer complaining that the police failed to protect her and other protesters.

She, however, said the demonstration was not against the leadership style of the governor but a “love rally” to disagree with the decision of the governor to allocate land to herdsmen.

But in a swift reaction, the government through the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Jonathan Obuebite, said the activist was attacked by her own thugs.

“The information we receive as a government is that Briggs mobilised people to Bayelsa for a protest. But they people turned against her and attacked her because she could not pay them the mobilisation fee”, he said.

Obuebite, who sympathised with Briggs, thanked security agencies for calming down the situation and saving the life of the activist.

But Dickson insisted that the PDP would bounce back and regain the control of the centre in 2019 after resolving their internal crisis.

He said he had transformed the state and brought development high used to be fantasies to realities adding that the people of the state now have the best hospitals, roads and schools under his government.

“Everywhere you go, they tell you that one of the safest states in e country is Bayelsa because you said no to people who practice violence.

“You have seen massive roads and we will continue to build the roads, hospitals and schools which they could not build,” he said.

He noted that the hardship in the state was caused by APC at the federal level accusing the party of destroying the economy.

He said under the APC, naira which used to be N160 to the dollar had skyrocketed to N500.

The governor, however, promised to lift an embargo in employment in the state immediately he completed his reforms in the public service.

He said his government would make more appointments to empower the people and reward persons who worked for his victory.

Speaking at the occasion, the National Publicity Secretary, PDP and former Minister for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said when he first visited Bayelsa under former Governor Goodluck Jonathan, the state was a mini-village.

But he said Dickson had transformed the stage into a town describing the governor as one of the pillars of the PDP.

“With governor Dickson, PDP has a future”, he said adding that PDP managed the country for 17 years only for APC to destroy the economy.

He said all the institutions built by the PDP were being used by APC to fight corruption in the country and insisted that in 2019, the party would bounce back.

In their goodwill message, other speakers eulogised the governor saying he had redefined development in the state.

Dickson to Sylva: Join my government

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, has called on his All Progressives Congress (APC) challenger in the 2015 governorship election in the state, Chief Timipre Sylva, to forget the differences between them and join his administration in the interest of the state.

Dickson, who described the ex- governor as his friend, said the desire to ensure growth and development of Bayelsa should take preeminence over individual political ambitions after the elections.

The governor said the state needs Sylva’s connections to move forward.

Dickson, during an interview he granted some journalists in Abuja at the weekend, said he had already demonstrated his openness by engaging some APC leaders in his administration.

The governor said he was open to partnership and urged Sylva to use his contacts to work for development, security and peace of the state.

He said: “I have several APC members in the government of Bayelsa State in one form or the other because after elections we should be talking about the state.

“I am asking Sylva, my friend and former governor  – he knows what it means to be a governor of the state, he knows the challenges particularly the economic challenges –   to join us by using his own party connections and contacts positively to work for development, for security, for peace because in the end that is what our people want.

“For me I was elected to serve the people so I am open for partnership, collaboration and cooperation. I want him to work with us and with his support we can jointly move our state forward.”

  • Dickson hails sacrifices of security agencies

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson, on Monday commended the self-sacrifice of security agencies and attributed the peace and safety in the state to their commitment and dedication.

The governor, according to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, spoke at a cocktail party held in honour of security chiefs in the state.

Dickson said security men sometimes paid dearly with their lives, adding that his administration made huge investment on security to complement the efforts of various agencies.

Dickson said the government was working to ensure that the state attained a higher security status, describing Bayelsa as the safest state in the Niger Delta region.

He said: “Government has put in place first class security infrastructure to keep the state safe to protect the tourism industry for visitors and investors. Making Bayelsa safe is the responsibility of all, in order to protect the investments in the state.

“A world class infrastructure without security is a wasteful investment that will not attract anybody or investors.”

He said the event was an opportunity to interact with the security chiefs to bring the government closer to security agencies.

Speaking, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adeyemi Ogunjemolusi, warned perpetrators of criminal activities in the state of hard times.

He assured residents of the determination of security agencies to keep the state safe and peaceful during this festive period.

He also commended Dickson for creating the enabling environment for the security agencies to operate and function effectively.

  • 2019: Jonathan’s loyalists seek lifeline for PDP

2019: Jonathan’s loyalists seek lifeline for PDP

Loyalists of former President Goodluck Jonathan are trying very hard to end the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2019 general elections, it was learnt Saturday.

The loyalists especially former ministers and governors during former administration of Jonathan were said to be visiting different state chapters of the PDP to seek reconciliation among aggrieved PDP members.

It was was gathered that Jonathan’s men were working under the auspices of the Ministers’ Forum (MF), comprising former governors, former ministers and PDP stalwarts.

There were indications that if their mission yielded expected fruits, they would either mount pressure on Jonathan to return for a second term or support the presidential ambition of former Jigawa State Governor, Lamido Sanusi.

The team alongside some former PDP governors was in Bayelsa State for a similar purpose, though they were said to have seized the opportunity to tour some ongoing projects of Governor Seriake Dickson.

The visit of the team to Bayelsa also raised suspicions that Dickson might be nursing an ambition to become a running mate if PDP presents a northern presidential candidate in 2019.

Among the visitors were former governors, Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido; Boni Haruna and Malam Ibrahim Shekarau of Adamawa and Kano States, former deputy governor of Osun State, Olusola Obada, Ambassador Ibrahim Kazaure, former ministers Abba Moro and Josephine Anenih.

A statement from the Bayelsa State Government House quoted Lamido as describing Dickson, as a role model for the PDP and a symbol of excellence for politicians to emulate.

Lamido confirmed that they were going round PDP states to reconcile aggrieved members and unify the party for future elections.

“PDP is the only party that can keep Nigeria United because the party is in every house, community and state. Our mission in Bayelsa was very successful”, he said.
He said their visit would inspire the party membership to have confidence in the PDP adding that they were working to reposition the party for greater heights.

He said the MF consisted of former governors, ministers and other stakeholders.
“The delegation of ministers forum captures every complexion of the PDP, made up of about thirty members, comprising former governors, National Assembly members and ambassadors to make sure the party reconciles its aggrieved members”, Lamido said.

Also the statement quoted Dickson as describing the visitors as a source of inspiration and called on all strata of the party to work towards moving the party to new and enviable heights.

Dickson explained that the party’s future was discussed and expressed hope in the party to overcome its challenges and forge a common front.

  • ‘I ‘ll not discriminate against opposition’

‘I ‘ll not discriminate against opposition’

Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has reiterated his commitment to carrying stakeholders along in his administration. The governor spoke at a reception held by his supporters to mark his victory at the Supreme Court. Correspondent MIKE ODIEGWU reports.

Bayelsa state Governor Seriake Dickson is like the proverbial cat with nine lives. the Supreme Court has upheld his victory in last year’s election. Dickson weathered the storm and the obstacles thrown at him by the opposition. For the first time in the history of the state, the election was hotly contested. The governor was finally declared the winner of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the supplementary election of January 9.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva, rejected the outcome of the elections and commenced a protracted litigation. But, Dickson, who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), triumphed. He won at the tribunal, the Court of Appeal and finally the apex court.

The stakes were high and if the governor had lost at any level, it would have spelted doom, not only for him, but also for the PDP.

Dickson, fondly called the Ofurumapepe (the great white shark), a sobriquet he adopted throughout the period of the elections and litigations, understood the dangers ahead. He threw everything into the contest. He was focused, dogged and restless, until the victory was stamped, sealed and delivered.

Dickson’s supporters organised a reception recently. He was celebrated as a hero by his admirers and party supporters.

Many Bayelsans trooped to the streets to welcome their governor. Women adorned in uniform wrappers and blouses; youths clad in praising-singing t-shirts and elders with their Ijaw attire lined up the roads singing and dancing for the victorious Dickson.

The crowd was mammoth; the Peace Park, venue of the celebration was filled to the brim. They shouted in joy, jumped in excitement, displaying various placards to congratulate their hero.

Dickson, who wore Ijaw attire with a feather festooned in his hat, marveled at the crowd that trooped out to welcome him. He dedicated his victory to God, saying that power comes from God.

The governor said: “If God did not allow it, who would have defeated all these people who are saying and doing all kinds of things? Have you forgotten how we got  here. You know they mobilised all their forces everywhere.

“In your units you know the people you saw and the people you defeated. In this state, I can’t remember the number of rallies we addressed, the number of meetings we attended. We went round across the length and breadth of this state.

“They said they had the powers, more money and everything. There was nothing they didn’t boast of but Gd delivered them to us.

“Even, when they started magomago you people resisted them. Most of them even lost in their polling units. Women and young men in Bayelsa rose up and used their bare bodies to block Armoured Personnel Carriers APC)”.

He went down memory lane to narrate how he defeated the APC and Sylva at the poll. He said the opposition using its influence constituted a three-man panel for the tribunal and relocated the panel from Bayelsa to Abuja.

“What they forgot is that power doesn’t come from Abuja. Abuja cannot do anything or say anything, if this Baba up there has not approved it. After everything, their own three-man tribunal unanimously said all of you in this state gave your mandate freely to me, my running mate and our great party”, he said.

The governor said the APC leaders, instead of joining forces with him, having lost at the tribunal, took the matter to the Court of Appeal and to the Supreme Court. According to him while the case was awaiting the adjudication of the apex court, the opposition was planning the number of people they would kill and chase away from their communities should they win the case.

He thanked the people of the state for their support and commended the judiciary for being truthful to its calling. Dickson warned against the intimidation of the judiciary, which it described as the foundation of democracy and nation’s stability.

The governor said: “I want to thank the judiciary for what they have displayed in this case that I know. They refused to be intimidated.

“They refused to be swayed. I want to call on all political leaders, whoever they are, to continue to support and encourage our judiciary and not to intimidate them because the judiciary remains the foundation of the nation stability.

“I agree that all may not be well, the few bad eggs here and there. But we should isolate them. While attending to that problem we should not at the same time destroy the institution called the judiciary.

“Because if we intimidate our judiciary to a level that judges would have to seek clearance before they make rulings, then we can say bye-bye not just to our democracy but also to national stability”.

Dickson dedicated his administration to what he referred to as the task of consolidating development and security. He promised to finish all projects he initiated and to engage the youths and women in meaningful activities.

Following his victory, he said the mandate of the Ijaw nation had been protected and could not be stolen adding that the Ijaw could not be put to shame.

“They did everything to put us to shame. After driving us from the centre, they were not satisfied. They did everything to take this place to humiliate us further. But we thank God that it had not happened. This Bayelsa State, the Jerusalem of Ijaw nation will never be conquered or intimidated”, he said.

The crowd roared. He said the APC leaders had hoped to get big appointments at the centre but had so far been disappointed.

He advised them to leave Abuja, return home and join hands with his administration to develop the state. He said some of them thought they would get free money and become billionaires overnight.

He said: “All the same, they are Bayelsans and I am the governor of all Bayelsans, both those who supported me and those who for one reason or the other did not. I want to reiterate my commitment to running an open-door policy and invite all of them to join us”.

He warned the youths not to allow them selves to be used for criminal activities against fellow citizens and the state.

“We know that the opposition will like to buy guns and give to people. We know that they like to do terrible things to create crisis in the communities. Please, desist from that.

“We don’t want crisis. All these threats of people blowing up facilities should stop. We want to protect the small revenue coming to this state to enable us serve you better”, he said.

Also speaking, Senator Barigha Amange, said with the electoral disputes over, peace and development would return to the state. He asked the APC and its leaders to join the PDP to develop the state saying that the state belonged to everybody.

Amange, who represents Bayelsa East in the Senate, said: “The money they wasted in litigation, they should have used it to support their supporters. But now that they have wasted the money, we can contribute money to assist them. They should come and join us to develop the state”, he said.

Chief Theophilus Okorotie from Bayelsa West said Dickson has provided leadership and made the Ijaw nation proud. He said the people would continue to support the governor. He said the distraction was over, adding that development would  follow. He appealed to the opposition to join the administration of Dickson.

The Chief of Staff, Government House, Talford Ongolo, urged the people to cooperate with the “wonderful” governor. He said the stage could not ask for more from God adding that the people were blessed to have Dickson as their governor.

“Dickson has given us cause to rejoice. The way he is managing our resources, our future is in safe hands. Those who are in the opposition camp will be worried but they have no reason to be worried.

“Dickson believes that everybody must be carried along. He had put to practice the principles of integration and inclusiveness in governance. We call for peace. As party members, let us extend the Olive branch”, he said.

The Chairman, Southern Ijaw Local Government, Joshua Macaiver, described the governorship election as a battle between light and darkness. He said : “It was a battle between those that believe in the Ijaw nation and those that don’t believe in the development of Ijaw nation. When you face the two candidates, one will tell you, ‘kill whatever number you want to kill, let me be the governor’.

“But, Governor Dickson will always tell you, ‘I don’t want you to kill any Ijaw man for me to be the governor’. That is one thing I like about him. We are solidly behind the governor”.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Cleopas Moses, says power flows from God. He said the governor had always attributed his victories to God. He described Dickson as a special specie and congratulated him on his victory.

In fact, the outpouring of goodwill messages continued and most of the speakers including the Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral John Jonah (retd) and the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Serena Dokubo-Spiff, kept asking the opposition to sheath its sword and join to develop the state.

With the litigation over, people are looking forward to what the future holds for Bayelsa and the reactions of the APC and its leaders especially following the Olive branch extended to them by Dickson and other PDP leaders.

  • Sylva, APC urge Supreme Court to sack Dickson

Sylva, APC urge Supreme Court to sack Dickson

Former Bayelsa State governor, Timipre Sylva and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC),  have asked the Supreme Court to nullify the election of Seriake Dickson as the governor of the state.

The request formed part of the reliefs sought by the parties in an appeal filed before the apex court through their lawyer, Sebastine Hon (SAN).

They faulted the September 22 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja division, which upheld Dickson’s victory in the governorship election.

Sylva and APC argued among others, that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) decision to cancel the December 6, 2015 election in Southern Ijaw local government area of the state and rescheduled it for January 9 this year was a breach of the provision of Section 26 (1( of the Electoral Act 2010.

They also argued that elections had taken place in Southern Ijaw before INEC cancelled it on the ground of “alleged but unproven” irregularities.

Sylva and his party are contending that the Court of Appeal misdirected itself and relied on hearsay evidence to arrive at its conclusion that election did not take place in Southern Ijaw.
