  • We didn’t endorse Dickson – MEND

The Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) on Tuesday denied reports that it endorsed the re-election bid of Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson.

MEND in a statement signed by its Spokesman, Gbomo Jomo, dissociated itself from a statement endorsing Dickson’s ambition, credited to one Prince Amaibi Horby, who claimed to be its acting chairman.

The militant group said it was not in support of re-election of Dickson, who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election.

It said Dickson in his desperation to be re-elected paid a group of thugs to use its name to endorse him.

The statement said: “The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) wishes to dissociate itself from an imposter and self-acclaimed “Acting Chairman” of MEND, going by the name of ‘Prince Amaibi Horby (aka General Busta Rhymes)’ who claims to be speaking for MEND by endorsing Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, for the December 05, 2015 governorship elections.

“This so-called support and endorsement was circulated in some sections of the media on Monday, 23 November 2015.

“MEND wishes to state categorically, that we do not endorse or support Governor Seriake Dickson in a way, shape or form and strongly urges the media to disregard any such statements to the contrary, as it did not emanate from MEND.

“As far as we know, Governor Seriake Dickson, in his desperation to be re-elected as Governor of Bayelsa State, has paid a group of thugs to use our group’s name to endorse his ambition.”

PDP thugs attacked, killed, our members – Bayelsa APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Bayelsa State chapter, Friday, raised the alarm over the attacks on its members at communities in Ekeremor and Southern Ijaw local government areas of the state by thugs it identified as members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The party, in a statement signed by the Sylva/Igiri Campaign Organisation (SICO) said the wave of attacks sweeping across the state left of its members, Mr. Andrew June, dead.

SICO’s Director, Media and Publicity, Chief Nathan Egba, said June was murdered at Oweigbene community in Ekeremor when suspected PDP thugs ambushed members of the APC.

Egba said the thugs also went on rampage in Otuan community ward 5 in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area destroying buildings belonging to APC members and all other APC campaign banners and billboards.

He said the destruction was carried out as part of preparations for the visit of the PDP candidate and the Governor of the state, Mr.Seriake Dickson, for his campaign rally.

He said: “This unwarranted attack is coming on the heels of warning by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, to deal with anyone who perpetrates violence and violates electoral laws during the elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States.

“Mr. Andrew June, an APC stalwart in Oweigbene community was murdered by a mob of PDP supporters alleged to have been sponsored by a PDP chieftain.

“The deceased, Mr. June and several APC supporters who sustained various degrees of injuries as a result of the attack were ambushed at Toru-gbene community en route Oweigbene after the APC rally in Ekeremor town, Ekeremor Local Government Area on Wednesday, 18th November, 2015.

“The deceased and other APC supporters sustained injuries from machetes cut and were rushed to Ojobo General Hospital in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, where Mr. June later died.

“The injured APC members are still receiving treatment in different hospitals in the area while the remains of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary at Oporo.”

He said in Otuan, the thugs were allegedly led by two serving Special Advisers to Governor Dickson, and members of the Bayelsa Volunteers Force (BVF) to unleash terror on innocent APC members.

According to him a well-known member of BVF reportedly brought in thugs from outside Otuan community while one of the thugs reportedly chopped-off the ear of an APC supporter during an inspection tour of damaged APC campaign materials.

“The attack continued later in the evening of Thursday, 19th November till the morning of Friday, November, 20th, 2015 as PDP supporters kept shooting sporadically to intimidate and scare APC supporters.

“Residents of Otuan community, a strong-hold of the APC have now deserted the community as people had to run for their lives.

“Already, the leader of the party in Otuan ward 5, Prince Coronation Tokpo, forwarded a petition on the incident to the Commissioner of Police to investigate the provocative attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We call on Governor Seriake Dickson to respect the peace accord he signed by calling his supporters to order to avoid further blood-shed.

“Bayelsans could now confirm the party and candidate that is violent and desperate to use force in a bid to win the election at all cost.

“The Governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief Timipre Sylva, was billed to tour communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area in continuation of his campaign before the reported attack on the members,” he said.

  • We are committed to free, fair election, says Dickson

We are committed to free, fair election, says Dickson

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson, has assured the international community of his administration’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful election in the state on December 5.

The governor who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election spoke on Thursday when the US Consul-General in Nigeria, John Bray, visited him to discuss issues bordering on the poll.

Dickson said as part of his preparations for the election, he was on a campaign and sensitisation tour of communities across the state.

The governor said he was also using the opportunity to educate the people on the essence of a violence-free election, describing himself as an advocate of free, fair and credible polls.

He accused the opposition of boasting to use federal might and other various agencies of government to rig the poll.

He further claimed that the opposition was using intimidation and threats of violence to scare the electorates.

Dickson warned anti-democratic forces against destabilising the state, stressing that, Bayelsans would resist any attempt to sabotage the forthcoming poll.

He called on security forces to take appropriate action against persons involved in any form anti democratic ctivities during the period.

He said: “My duty is to sensitise the people on their rights and I have been going round to sensitise the people, not to be involved in violence, not to be  intimidated, turnout en masse and vote massively for the PDP, because we are a peaceful party as against the opposition that is known for violence.

“Our government is known for stability, peaceful co-existence, the protection of the democratic rights of the citizens, observance of the rule of law, a record of performance, belief in the principles of free, fair and credible election which the is not known for.”

But Bray said he came to inform Dickson of US plans to send an observer mission to monitor the poll.

The consul-general also said he was in the Government House to share ideas with Dickson on how to conduct a free, fair and credible election.

  • ‘Dickson won’t escape defeat in guber poll’

Former acting Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Nestor Binabo, on Friday said the incumbent Governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Seriake Dickson, “would be roundly” defeated in the December 5 governorship election in the state.

Binabo, a former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, said the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Timipre Sylva, is more popular and has a better appeal than the incumbent governor.

He said Dickson mortgaged his goodwill through his selfish tendencies, inhuman policies and failing to fulfill the fundamental functions of the government.

According to him, every government aspires to balance social welfare of the people with capital projects in the spirits of socio-capitalist economy practiced in the country.

He said Dickson’s administration was a total failure for its inability to deliver on capital and social components of a performing government.

Binabo, in a press briefing in Yenagoa, the state capital, observed that Dickson, at the inception of his government, declared a state of emergency in education.

But, he said, the administration failed to fulfill most of the components of the emergency, adding that the educational system had become worse than it was in the past administration.

Insisting that the educational sector in the state was sick under Dickson, the former speaker lamented that the government abandoned most of the rehabilitation and reconstruction projects it started in schools.

He said it was a policy somersault for a government which declared emergency in education to allow the only state-owned university, the Niger Delta University (NDU) to decay.

“This government has added no value to the only state-owned university, the NDU. The development of that school stopped with Sylva. After Sylva, the school has been suffering from infrastructural and academic decay.

“Imagine that courses that were accredited during Sylva’s administration have been de-accredited. The school is begging for help. Instead of investing in the school, what the government did was to increase school fees without recourse to the poverty level of the people.

“Besides, this is a government that has failed to pay bursaries to students. So, everybody especially the students are suffering. How can a governor expect people he has impoverished to vote for him a second term? Any vote for Dickson, is a vote for entrenched poverty.”

  • Sylva to Dickson: Go with your wicked policies

Sylva to Dickson: Go with your wicked policies

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the December 5 election in Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, on Thursday asked the state Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, to pack his belongings and get ready to quit the Government House.

Sylva lambasted Dickson, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the election and described his policies and programmes as anti-people, wicked and painful.

The former Governor, who spoke through his campaign outfit, Sylva-Igiri Campaign Organisation (SICO), said Dickson, in the last three years introduced unpopular initiatives to inflict pains on the citizens.

Sylva in a statement signed by the Director of Media and Publicity, SICO, Chief Nathan Egba, said Dickson kept his promise to deliberately impoverish the people.

He said: “It will be recalled that Governor Dickson had boasted that none of his appointees, particularly the commissioners and special advisers would become millionaires under his government.

“Dickson went further to introduce policies that have crippled businesses of Bayelsans in private enterprises so as to ensure that there would be nobody financially strong enough to challenge him in the coming election.

“The civil servants are worst hit as the outgoing Dickson’s administration introduced a draconian regime through multiple taxation to shortchange them and take part of their meager salaries through the back door to keep them in perpetual poverty.

“It is on record that Governor Dickson also starved the entire civil service of funds for the day-to-day running of government business as well as deny civil servants of promotion on the excuse of lack of money to pay them on the next salary grade.”

Sylva said it was against all known public service norms for a political appointee to practically take over all functions of the office of the Accountant-General of the state.

He said Dickson was running an administration that was solely operated by his cronies and clearly not civil servants friendly.

He also accused the governor of inflicting pains on pensioners in the state by not paying their entitlements for months.

  • On campaign trail of Seriake Dickson

On campaign trail of Seriake Dickson

Politics remains one huge fascination especially to the aficionados in spite of delimiting factors for genuine democratisation of the process and benefits in our clime. Those who share this undying love for the prospects which politics offers the people for a better life in a just and humane society are wont to believe that despite the imperfections, some politicians are still worthy of leadership and should be supported in their aspirations to effect a change.

But regrettably, this class of political leaders is few as most of those who fill the political space are seen as jobbers and charlatans, who resorted to politics as a short cut to wealth and fame. And this may be a disincentive for the people to trust and believe politicians when in their usual cycle of electioneering campaign, they go round shopping for votes.

Thus, the challenge is for the electorate, through relevant civic education and activism, to demand for a saner approach to our politics which should seek to enhance true development and welfare of the people, a new social contract of commitment that emphasizes genuine public service rather than self-serving orientation of a political class common in the polity.

These were issues of interest and due observation when this reporter was recently on the campaign trail of the governor of Bayelsa State, Henry Seriake Dickson, who significantly comes across as one politician making a difference in the proper sense of the utility of politics as a means to renewal.

Perhaps, the question of values and individual convictions and of course the fervent recognition of the critical role of history in the affairs of men and verdict of posterity may be the driving force but no matter, Seriake Dickson is an emerging political leader who may play a bigger role on the national stage in the future. The nation certainly needs many of those with his attributes in our collective quest for development rather than the usual refrain of a nation of potentials.

Dickson is real, visionary and engaging. He is arguably a grassroots mobilizer, a proud Ijaw man, pro-people and obviously a liberal. I looked at him closely, interpreted his thoughts and came to the conclusion that Bayelsans are lucky to have such a brilliant man as their governor. The tremendous achievements of his on-going first term, particularly the quality of his work, the deep thoughts shaping them and future implication for a prosperous Bayelsa State only formed background of my assessment and judicious verdict.

Following his campaign trail reveals a man genuinely loved by his people. In Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, the “Community-to-Community meet the people tour” afforded the governor the opportunity to tell his story of a successful first term now winding down and prospects of a re-election to do more by his restoration administration and the need for the people’s endorsement.

In presenting his case for re-election, the governor’s concern had been the need for continuity of his vision where Bayelsa State could continue to enjoy uninterrupted development in infrastructure provision, particularly opening up the state by connecting those inaccessible but important locations by roads and bridges, thereby enhancing commerce and civilization, manpower development through his free and compulsory education, scholarships,  health, job creation and the very broad plans for the diversification of the state economy focusing on such ambitious projects like the Agge Deep Seaport, the LNG in Brass, investment in power generation and the eco-industrial park as well as the completion of the airport at Amassoma now about 60 per cent ready. He is also interested in further entrenching a governance culture based on transparency and accountability just as he would want the security of the state maintained to avoid a relapse to the past.

It was fun all the way as he presented the serious issues in the campaign to the people, mocking Sylva and the APC either in his mannerism, gesticulations or humorous demonstrations of the evil he said the APC constitutes if allowed any opportunity in the state and his repeated admonition to reject APC and its candidate, Sylva, like a plague.

Although the presence of APC in Bayelsa State is a good thing in a democracy as it creates room for competition, its possible impact in the December 5 governorship election may not be quite positive as many had thought. Hope seems dimming following a number of strategic errors and effects especially on the part of Sylva and the inability to manage the initial semblance of success of the APC in Bayelsa State. The expectation is that one would see its huge presence in the state, especially the capital, Yenagoa, holding big rallies, campaigning strongly but it wasn’t so. Unlike the governor, who is gaining ground by the day from very strategic constituencies like one witnessed during the 4th Bayelsa State Thanksgiving Day where core and influential clergymen openly endorsed him for re-election with such a very large crowd in attendance.

On the campaign trail, Dickson’s deep connection with the people says something about him as a politician. Besides being a compelling campaigner, hitting on the soul of those issues and concerns the people could relate with, he bonds so well with the folks as one of them, demystifying the governor status. For this street sense of believing Governor Seriake Dickson is your next door neighbor kind of leader, he is better recognised and called the ‘Contriman governor” and for his reliability as one governor who fulfills his promises you hear of “Talk na do governor” among the folks.

At Swali, a community in Yenagoa Local Government, Dickson asked the people to remember he is a man who never forgets his friends and people he met along the way, intimating that he rewards loyalty and that those who work hard enough to actualize his re-election would be compensated. He also repeated similar messages at Abola, Azikoro, Okaka, Ekeki, shaking hands with the commercial tricycle riders and passengers  to press home his message as he walked the over one kilometer road to attend  yet another town hall meeting at Kpansia, a community in the state capital which ended late into the night.

It is still early to pronounce a definite verdict but based on political tendencies observed and the possible effect on the election -day, Dickson is favoured to be re-elected as a reward for his performance and perhaps with a tinge of sentiment as the APC has yet to prove the important point of being truly a credible alternative.

  • Dickson sets up committee for Alamieyeseigha’s burial

Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson, on Thursday set up a committee to begin preparations for the burial rites of the former Governor of the state, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who died at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), on Saturday.

Dickson in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said the committee was constituted at an enlarged emergency State Executive Council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa.

The governor promised to give the late Alamieyeseigha a state burial.

The committee has the deputy Governor, Rear Admiral John Jonah (rtd) as its Chairman, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Kombowei Benson, Vice-Chairman with the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Edmund Alison-Oguru, as Secretary.

Other members of the committee are – Senator Foster Ogola, member of the House of Representatives, Henry Ofongo; Commissioners of Information and Orientation, Health, Works and Infrastructure and Culture and Ijaw National Affairs.

Also included in the list are – the Chief of Staff, Government House, Yenagoa and the Principal Executive Secretary to the Governor.

Others are the State Chairman, Secretary, Woman and Youth Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representatives of the Alamieyeseigha family, the Ijaw National Congress (INC), the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Chief Thompson Okorotie, Prof. Steve Azaiki, the Chief Historian and Archivist of the State.

Dickson, who had earlier declared a seven day state mourning for late Alamieyeseigha, enjoined Bayelsans to come together to give him a befitting burial.

He described the period as trying times for the state and the deceased’s immediate family.

He said the state and the Ijaw nation lost a major leader and pillar, adding that the vacuum created by his departure would be difficult to fill.

Dickson said Alamieyeseigha laid a solid foundation for the development of the state.

  • Alamieyeseigha abandoned medical trip midway – Dickson

Alamieyeseigha abandoned medical trip midway – Dickson

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson, on Tuesday confirmed that the late former Governor of the state, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, abandoned his foreign medical trip midway.

The governor, who spoke in an emotion-laden state broadcast in Yenagoa, said the former governor who died at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) on Saturday, was a victim of orchestrated harassment.

Though the governor did not mention forces behind the harassment, he said the mistreatment led to the untimely death of the Ijaw hero.

Dickson apparently alluded to insinuations that the purported extradition request by Britain forced Alamieyeseigha to abandon his medical trip and led to health complications that killed him.

He warned against politicising Alamieyeseigha’s death, saying the incident should unite instead of dividing the Ijaw nation.

He said: “We acknowledged the genuine sense of anger and disappointment and  the sense of outrage held by our people  at home and in the Diaspora and all well meaning Nigerians and  lovers of justice around the world about the way and manner  our leader was harassed,  pounded and forced to abandon his treatment abroad.

“We condemn in very strong terms the propaganda and the orchestrated harassment that led to his untimely death. However, we are pleading that this is not a time for recrimination and divisions.

“This is rather a time for unity and for sober reflection. I therefore called for all and sundry particularly the youths of this state and all Niger Deltans and the Ijaw nation to remain calm and maintain the peace as we all unite and mourn our departed leader.

“I advice that we refrain from politicizing our collective tragedy. This is a collective tragedy and we should not politicize it. I advice that we join hands with the family to mourn with them and grieve with them and grieve with one another and work with the family and  the government  to ensure that we give him what he rightly deserved, that is a befitting state funeral.”

  • Alamieyeseigha’s death a personal loss – Dickson

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has described the death of Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the first civilian governor of the state, as a personal loss to him, the government and people of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Alamieyeseigha died at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital on Saturday evening.

Dickson, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said Alamieyeseigha was a strong supporter of his administration.

He added that Alamieyeseigha’s demise was a very painful and monumental loss to the entire Ijaw nation, which he had always defended.

The Bayelsa governor also commiserated with the deceased’s wife, Margaret, his immediate family, and the entire people of the state, noting that the Ijaws had lost a “rare gem.”
